ALLEGATION OR MIXTURE (PART-I)

QUERY 1
A vessel is filled with liquid, 3 parts of which are water and 5 parts syrup. How much of the mixture must be drawn off and replaced with water
so that the mixture may be half water and half syrup?
Vijay Bharath Reddy
Water in the initial mixture = 3/8
Water in the liquid added (i.e water itself) = 1/1 = 1
Water in the final mixture = 1/2
Now using allegation method
3/8
1
1/2
ratio = 1 - (1/2) : (1/2) - (3/8) = 1/2 : 1/8 = 4:1
i.e., from 5 parts of initial mixture, 1 part should be replaced with water, means 1/5
RONNIE BANSAL
As used by bhaai Vijay Bharath we do not require the ALLEGATION METHOD in a question when the new mixture has to be in the ration of 1: 1.
Here is the trick:
Suppose there is in total 8 (3+5) liters of mixture in the vessel with 3 liters of water and 5 liters of syrup in it. Now we have to draw the mixture in a way so that
water and syrup are equal in the vessel after the replacement with the same quantity that was drawn. Its simple to think if one liter of syrup is drawn from the
mixture above and 1 liter of water is added the problem is solved.
In such a question just divide the quantity to be drawn by the total quantity of that item. That number will be the answer. Here we have to draw 1 liter of syrup
out of total 5 liters of it. Therefore 1/5 will be the total quantity to be drawn from whole; hence the answer.

Now take another example:

A vessel is filled with liquid, 5 part of which are water and 10 part syrup. How much of the mixture must be drawn off and replaced with water
so that the mixture may be half water and half syrup.
We have to draw 2 + 1/2 i.e. 5/2 liters of syrup. Total syrup is 10 liters. So 5/2 divided by 10 i.e. 1/4 will be the answer.

QUERY 2
How to solve these type of questions:
Two Vessels A & B contain milk and water in the ration p:q and r: s. Find the ratio in which the quantities be drawn or mixed from the two
vessels so that the ratio of milk and water in the new mixture is m:n
RONNIE BANSAL
Find p/p+q; r/r+s & m/m+n`
In such a case (either drawn or mixed) m/m+n will be greater than either of the two ratios given just above; means smaller than the other.Now deduct smaller
ratio from m/m+n & m/m+n from the greater.
We'll find then a new ratio; the first term representing MILK (the first item) and the second term representing WATER (the second item). So if ratio of MILK &
WATER is asked the answer will be the ratio thus found; otherwise reverse.
Lets's see how:
Two Vessels A & B contain milk and water in the ration 7 : 3 and 3: 2 Find the ratio in which the quantities be taken from the two vessels so
that the ratio of milk and water in the new mixture is 2 : 1
Here p/p+q=7/7+3=7/10
r/r+s=3/3+2=3/5

http://www.sscexamforum.com/ssc/showthread.php?tid=3126

m/m+n=2/2+1=2/3
Here we see that 2/3 is greater than 3/5 and smaller than 7/10
Now, 2/3 - 3/5 = 1/15 & 7/10 - 2/3 = 1/30
==> 1/15 : 1/30 = 2 : 1
So as explained above 2 : 1 is the answer.

QUERY 3
A can contains a mixture of two liquids A and B in the ratio 7 : 5. When 9 litres of mixture is drawn off and the can is filled with B, the ratio of A
and B becomes 7 : 9. Litres of liquid A contained by the can initially was

Amit jha
Let intial mixture of A in the can = 7x litres
&
B = 5x litres
9 litres of mixture was drawn
Therefore the quantity of the liquid A in the drawn mixture 9 litres = 9*7/12 = 21/4
and the quantity of the liquid B in the drawn mixture = 9*5/12 = 15/4
So the quantity of liquid A left in the mixture = 7x - 21/4 & that of B = 5x - 15/4
And the quantity of the liquids A & B after the can being added with 9 litres of liquid of B:
A= 7x - 21/4 = (28x - 21)/4
&
B =5x - 15/4 + 9 = 5x + 21/4 = (20x - 21)/4
But the new mixture of A & B is in the ratio of 7 : 9
Hence (28x - 21)/ (20x + 21) = 7/9
Solving it x = 3
So 7x = 21 (option '3')
SRIKANT SINGH
Let quantity of liquid A initially = 7x litre
And quantity of B = 5x litre
Obviously the drawn quantity of both the liquids will be in the same ratio as is the ratio of the liquids existing in the mixture
Now as the ratio of those both the liquids in the mixture initially is 7 : 5, therefore quantity of A drawn
= 9*(7/12) = 5.25 litre
And quantity of B drawn = 9 5.25 = 3.75 litre
Now, according to the question

Therefore, quantity of liquid A in the mixture now left = 7x = 7*3 = 21 litres (option '3')

QUERY 4
9 liters are drawn from a cask full of water and it is filled with milk. Then 9 liters of mixture is drawn and the cask is again filled with milk. The
quantity of water now left in the cask to that of milk is 16 : 9. How much does the cask hold?
RONNIE BANSAL
Remember the following:Suppose a vessel contains some kind of liquid (let it be x units) from which y units are taken out and replaced by another liquid.
After n operations the quantity of the first liquid left in the vessel= x(1 - y/x)^n and the equation for the capacity of the vessel = [x(1 -- y/x)^n]/x = first term
of the ratio/addition of both the term of the ratio.
Here we have to find the capacity of the cask, therefore [x(1 - 9/x)^n]/x = 16/25
==> (1 -9/x)^2 = 16/25
==> 1 - 9/x = 4/5
==> 5x - 45 = 4x
==> x = 45
So the cask can hold 45 liters in all.

QUERY 5
A mixture contains 80% acid and rest water. Part of the mixture that should be removed and replaced by same amount of water to make the
ratio of acid and water 4 : 3 is ?
1.
2.

2/3rd
2/7th

Amit jha
Let Original Volume of Mixture = x litre and it's to be replaced by y litre of water.
Ratio of Acid is to Water in mixture = 80% : 20% = 4:1 (given)
Now volume of the Acid in x - y litre of Mixture = 4/5 (x - y) litre;
and volume of water in x - y litre of Mixture = 1/5 (x - y) Litre
Now we are adding Y litre of Water into the mixture to get the Acid - water Ratio = 4 : 3
So in new mixture Acid wud be remain 4/5 (x - y) litre
But volume of water will be increased by y litre = 1/5 (x - y) litre + y Litre.
Volume of water = (z + 4y)/5
Now new ratio of Acid to Water is given 4 : 3
Thus 4/5 (x - y) : (x + 4y)/5 = 4:3
Solving we get (4x - 4y) / (x + 4y) = 4 : 3
==> 16x - 12y = 4x + 16y
==> 12x = 28y
==> y/x = 12/28 = 2/7 (option 'd')

QUERY 6
A liquid P is 10/7 as heavy as water and water is 7/5 times as heavy as another liquid Q. The amount of liquid P that must be added to 7 litres
of liquid Q so that the mixture may weigh as much as an equal volume of water will be?
1.
2.
3.
4.

7 litres
31/6 litres
5 litres
14/3 litres

Vaibhav Vats
If P is 10/7 times as heavy as water and water is 7/5 as heavy as Q;then 7 litres of Q is equal in weight to 5 litres of W (water).
Therefore if 1 litre of P is added to 7 litres of Q; then 10/7 litres of W can be added to 5 litres of W to keep the same weight in both. In other words we can say that
if 'x' litres of P is added to 7 litres of Q; then (10/7)x litres of W can be added to 5 litres of W to keep the same weight in both.
Hence
x + 7 = 5 + (10/7)x
==> 7x + 49 = 35 +10x
==> 14 = 3x
==> x = 14/3 (option '4')

QUERY 7
Three glasses of capacity 2 ltrs, 5 ltrs and 9 ltrs contain mixture of milk and water with milk concentrations 90%, 80% and 70% respectively.
The contents of three glasses are emptied into a large vessel. Find the milk concentration and ratio of milk to water in the resultant mixture?

SUCHI SHARMA
When the concentration of milk is 90%; the ratio of milk to
When the concentration of milk is 80%; the ratio of milk to
When the concentration of milk is 70%; the ratio of milk to
Therefore the resultant concentration ratio of milk to water

water = 9 : 1
water = 8 : 2
water = 7 : 3
= sum of milk concentration in different vessels : sum of water concentration in different vessels

= [2*9/10 + 5*8/10 + 9*7/10] : [2*1/10 + 5*2/10 + 9*3/10]

= 121/10 : 39/10
= 121 : 39
And the milk concentration in the resultant mixture = 121/10 ltrs = 12.1 ltrs

Two casks of 48 and 42 ltrs are filed with mixture of wine and water; the proportions in the two casks being respectively 13 : 7 and 18 : 17. If
the contents of the two casks be mixed and 20 ltrs of water added to the whole, what will be the proportion of wine to water in the result?

: 21

RONNIE BANSAL
Proportion of wine to water in the result = Quantity of wine in both of the casks : Quantity of water in both of the casks + 20
= [48*(13/20) + 42*(18/35)] : [48*(7/20) + 42*(17/35) + 20]
= [31.2 + 21.6] : [16.8 + 20.4 + 20]
= 52.8 : 57.2= 528 : 572
= 12 : 13 (option '2')
TRICK
We, actually, do not need to divide 528 : 572 to arrive at 12 : 13; as in the options only this ratio is with smaller first term.

QUERY 9
How much water must be added to 60 litres of milk at 3/2 litres for Rs 20 so as to have a mixture worth Rs 32/3 a litre?
MAHA GUPTA
The cost price (CP) of 60 liters of milk without adding water = 60*20*2/3 = 800
But the cost price has to be same after mixing of water in the milk
Now let the quantity of water to be added = x litersTherefore the total mixture = (60 + x) liters
Now the cost price of the mixture per liter = Rs 32/3Therefore, (60 + x)*32/3 = 800==> x = 15
Hence 15 liters of water will be needed to mix in the milk
TRICK (Allegation Method)
Quantity of cheaper item/quantity of dearer item = (CP of dearer item -- Mean price)/(Mean price - CP of cheaper item)where the MEAN PRICE= The cost price of
one unit of MIXTURE
Now let the quantity of the cheaper item i.e. water = x liters.
Therefore, x/60 = [(40/3) - (32/3)]/[32/3 - 0)]
..................[(cost of milk per liter = 20*2/3 = Rs 40/3; and as water is available free of cost, cost of
water per liter = Rs 0 (zero)]
==> x/60 = 1/4
==> x = 15

QUERY 10
A container contains 60 kg of milk . From this container 6 kg of milk was taken out and replaced by water. This process was repeated further
two times. The amount of milk left in the container is?
MAHA GUPTA
Milk left in the container:
After Ist attempt.........................
After IInd attempt......................
After IIIrd (last) attempt.............

60 - 6 = 54 kg
54 - (54/60)*6 = 48.6 kg
48.6 - (48.6/60)*6 = 43.74 kg

Alternate Method
This process is just like COMPOUND INTEREST that we see in calculating the amount (principal + interest) after certain number of years. The only difference is, in
compound interest the sum keeps increasing whereas here the amount of milk will be decreasing everytime, but the manner is same.
Well, the formula to find amount in case of CI = P (1 + r/100)^t, where P = principal and r= rate and t = term
As a quantity is to be taken out here, we just have to use sign of minus ( - ) in place of sign of addition ( + )
Therefore milk left in the container after 3 attempts = 60 (1 - 6/60)^3 = 60*(9/10)^3 = 43.74 kg

QUERY 11
One liquid contains 22.5% of water, another contains 27% water. A glass if filled with 5 parts of the first liquid and 7 parts of the second. How
much per cent of it is water?
MAHA GUPTA
The required percentage of water in the new mixture should be:
(Quantity of water in the new mixture/Quantity of the new mixture)*100
= [(5 parts of 22.5% of water + 7 parts of 27% of water)/(5 parts + 7 parts) of the LIQUID]*100

QUERY 12
A barrel contains a mixture of wine and water in the ratio 3:1. How much fraction of the mixture must be drawn off and substituted by water
so that the ratio of wine and water in the resultant mixture in the barrel becomes 1:1?
MAHA GUPTA

ALLEGATION METHOD in a question when the new mixture has to be in the ration of 1: 1. Here is the trick:
Suppose there is in total of 3+1 =4 liters of mixture in the barrel with 3 units of wine and 1 unit of water in it. Now we have to draw the mixture in a way so that
wine and water are equal in the barrel after the replacement with the same quantity that was drawn. Its simple to think if one unit of wine is drawn from the
mixture above and 1 unit of water is added the problem is solved.
In such a question just divide the quantity to be drawn by the total quantity of that item. That number will be the answer. Here we have to draw 1 unit of wine
out of total 3 unit of it. Therefore 1/3 will be the total quantity to be drawn from whole; hence the answer.

QUERY 13
In what proportion may these kinds of tea of prices @Rs 80. Rs 70 and Rs 50 per Kg be mixed to produce a mixture of Rs 60 per Kg?
MAHA GUPTA
We see here we have three quantities having different values. When the case is like that take any two quantities (say a and b) and then find
the ratio using allegation method or the way you find easier. Similarly take the third quantity and any of a and b, and find their ration as we did
earlier.
Now is the turn of finding the combined ratio of those two ratios calculated above.
Now see how it will work when the above question is considered.
a
80

c
50

b
70

60
10

c
50

60
20

10

10

Therefore the combined ratio of these two ratios = 10 : 10 ; (20+10) = 10 : 10 : 30 = 1 : 1 : 3

You'll see whatever proportion of above two mixtures we take, the price of the resulting mixture will always be same as both the mixtures cost Rs 60 per kg.

QUERY 14
A shopkeeper sells milk with 5% water. In this 2 liters of milk how much milk should be mixed so that water become 4%?
MAHA GUPTA
The total mixture (pure milk and water) = 2 liters = 2,000 ml
But 5% of it is water, so water in it = 5% of 2,000 = 100 ml
Therefore the milk initially = 1,900 ml
Now the water should be 4% of the mixture after milk has been added to it; obviously the amount of water will remain the same i.e. 100 ml. Now if the water is
4%, milk will be 96%
If 4% is equal 100 ml, 96% = (100/4)*96 = 2,400 ml
So the milk now to be added = 2,400 - 1,900 = 500 ml = 1/2 liter = 0.5 liter

QUERY 15
The ratio of water and milk in a vessel is 1:2 and in other vessel is 3:4. 1-1 kg of mixture is drawn off from both vessel and poured into third
vessel . Then new ratio of water and milk?
MAHA GUPTA
1-1 kg of mixture is drawn from both the vessels
So Quantities drawn from the 1st vessel:
WATER = 1*1/3 = 1/3 kg
MILK = 1*2/3 = 2/3 kg
And Quantities drawn from the 2nd vessel:
WATER = 1*3/7 = 3/7 kg
MILK = 1*4/7 = 4/7 kg

Therefore total of WATER drawn = 1/3 + 3/7 = 16/21 kg

And total of MILK drawn = 2/3 + 4/7 = 26/21 kg
Hence the new ratio of WATER and MILK = 16/21 : 26/21 = 8 : 13 (answer)

QUERY 16
In 2 type of brass, ratio of copper and zinc are 8 : 3 and 15 : 7. The ratio in which these two type of brass should be mixed so that the ratio of
copper and zinc in this new type of brass becomes 5 : 2 is?
MAHA GUPTA
First of all see QUERY 2 here to know how to do such types
Here p/p+q = 8/8+3 = 8/11
r/r+s = 15/15+7 = 15/22
m/m+n = 5/5+2 = 5/7
Here we see that 5/7 is greater than 15/22 and smaller than 8/11
Now, 5/7 - 15/22 = 5/154 & 8/11 - 5/7 = 1/77
==> 5/154 : 1/77 = 5 : 2
So as explained above 5 : 2 is the answer.

QUERY 17
The ratio of water and spirit in the mixture is 1 : 3. If he volume of the solution is increased by 25% by adding spirit only; what is the resultant
ratio of water and spirit?
MAHA GUPTA
According to the ratio the solution is = 1+3 = 4 units
After the increase of the solution = 4 + 25% of 4 i.e. 5 units; means 1 more unit than earlier
But only spirit is added; therefore it is 1 + (3+1) = 1 + 4
So the ration now = 1 : 4

QUERY 18
Zinc and copper are in the ratio 5 : 3 in 400 gm of an alloy. How much of copper (in grams) should be added to make the ratio 5 : 4?
1.
2.
3.
4.

66
72
200
50

MAHA GUPTA
Zinc earlier = 400*(5/8) = 250 gm
Copper earlier = 400 - 250 = 150 gm
Now zinc has to be the same, only quantity of the copper to be changed to make the ration 5 : 4
So the quantity of copper later = 250*(4/5) = 200 gm
Hence the additional copper needed = 200 - 150 = 50 gm (option '4')

QUERY 19

MAHA GUPTA
Case-I
Quantity of sugar 40% of 600 = 240 gm
Quantity of the other/s = 60% of 600 = 360 gm
Case-II
Only the quantity of sugar is to be changed; quantity of other thing/s has to be remain the same. As the sugar now is to be 50% of the solution, so quantity of
the other thing/s is also 50%, means both equal, means sugar also needs to be 360 gm in the new solution.
So additional sugar required = 360 - 240 = 120 gm

This process of draw of milk from the container is just like COMPOUND INTEREST that we see in calculating the amount (principal + interest) after certain number

same.
Well, the formula to find amount in case of CI = P (1 + r/100)^t, where P = principal and r= rate and t = term
As the quantity is to be taken out here, we just have to use sign of minus ( - ) in place of sign of addition ( + )
As the operation of draw of milk from the container is performed three more times after the first attempt already has been made, actual operation of drawn of
milk is 4 times therefore.
Now, Let the quantity of milk in the container in the beginning be x liters
so rate of draw is 4/x; and the term is 4
----4 liters of milk is drawn every time
Thus quantity of milk left in the container after 4 attempts = x(1 4/x)^4 liters
The ratio of milk to water now is 16 : 65, means milk is 16/81
Thus, [ x(1 4/x)^4]/x = 16/81 = (2/3)^4
==> (1 4/x)^4 = (2/3)^4
==> 1 4/x = 2/3
==> x = 12 liters (option b)
