Late Summer Issue 2011

A Most Impressive Visitor

The latest aircraft from
Boeing has been testing at Boise
the past few weeks, and what an
impressive sight it is! The 787800 Dreamliner landed on August 12th, shut down the quiet
Rolls-Royce engines, cooled, and
restarted for a flawless takeoff
back to its home field in Everett,
near Seattle.

The first of the six test jets

rolled out of the hangar in 2009.
During the 787s airworthiness
flights, the aircraft has flown all
over the world; testing high-altitude performance in Bolivia,
noise in Montana and crosswinds in Iceland, according to
the Boeing website.
Notable for more than its
spectacular size, the worlds first
composite-plastic commercial jet
will find its first home with ANA,
Japans All Nippon Airways.
Boeing notes that the 250-seat
Dreamliner is capable of flying
further and use 20 percent less
fuel than rival aircraft due to the

Boise FSD, Andy Coose, Goes Down Under

- by Tricia Bierle, TSA Liaison

Andrew Coose, former Federal Security Director (FSD) for the

Transportation Security Administration in Boise, departed for his new
assignment in Sydney, Australia earlier this month. Coose had been the TSA
Director in Boise since August 2007. He was recently selected as the TSA
Representative (TSAR) for Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands.
Andy, his wife Dyana, and their two children will now be based in Sydney, but he will serve as a security
liaison throughout that region.
Andy Coose made a significant impact on TSA operations in Idaho over the last four years. Under
his leadership, TSA Operations in Idaho won TSAs 2009 Airport of the Year Award, recognizing the
outstanding work performed by Idaho TSA employees. Idaho TSA operations were selected for this
prestigious award from among approximately 400 airports across the U.S.
Also during Andys tenure, security at the Boise Airport was enhanced through the installation of
Advanced Imaging Technology and a TSA grant to upgrade the closed circuit television (CCTV)
systems. Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Sun Valley, and Lewiston all received CT-80 baggage screening
equipment. The CT-80 Reveal Explosives Detection Systems (EDS) were designed to screen checked
baggage at small-to medium-size airports through a sophisticated x-ray analysis of each checked bag.
Incorporating the explosives detection systems streamlined the baggage screening experience for all
Idaho travelers.
FSD Cooses replacement is expected to be announced later this fall.

New Entry Feature at BOI!

Southwest Airlines recently

announced that they would be
pulling nonstop service in 16 cities - unfortunately, Boise was on
that list for 3 destinations.
Effective January 8, 2011,
Southwest will no longer provide
nonstop service to Seattle, Salt
Lake City, or Reno. With other
airlines serving Seattle (Alaska)
and Salt Lake City (Delta), the
only destination lost for Boise air
travelers is Reno.
After the Southwest announcement, Alaska announced
that they would increase nonstop service to Seattle with two
additional frequencies effective

From the Directors Desk

Sometimes the simplest ideas become the best ideas.
As we near the completion of another fiscal year at the City and Airport,
it should be noted that, as most of the city, valley, region, state, and nation
continues to struggle with the prolonged effects of the unstable economy,
some, like this airport, are beginning to see signs of a return to a growing
environment. In separating our internal from our external situation, I
attribute the internal success solely to the hard work and dedication of the
staff and employees of the airport. At all levels of our organization, I witness
performance that makes our organization more efficient while maintaining
our ever-high level of customer service. Frequent conversations with
employees reveal that employees are constantly looking for and identifying
ways of improving the way we do things. As we move forward into the
coming year, we will continue to see struggles with the economy - the City
of Boise being no exception.
That being said, I ask this favor: If you have an idea of how we can improve a process, reduce a cost
without jeopardizing service or performance, or something else that might improve our organization,
please make that idea known, either through supervisors, or the directors forum.

Price of Air Travel Versus Other Goods and Services

A change in the price of any
good or service over time has
little value in isolation, notes the
Air Transport Association as it
posted this price comparison of
air fares versus other commonly
purchased items.
While the comparison from
1978 to 2010 is stunning, whats
most notable is the lack of a price
increase from 2000 to 2010 for air
travel when compared to the
other goods and services on the
list!
Of course, that is a major reason airlines are making certain
that every dollar counts; reevaluating each route and city pair to
be certain that they are getting
the best return on the investment
of a very expensive asset.

Whats New on the Airfield?

There is some exciting behind the scenes work being done on

the airfield! The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is in the
final stages of testing a new navigational aid for Runway 28R.
Currently both Runways 28 Left (L) and Right (R) do not have
any navigational aids. When weather is poor and visibility is low,
pilots utilize navigational aids from the ground that communicate
to instruments in the cockpit to help the pilots guide the aircraft to
the runway. Runways 10L and R have navigational aids, the most
sophisticated and high-tech being on Runway 10R (which is where
we have the large light bridge structure, the Approach Lighting
System or ALS).
The FAA will be testing the navigational aid (instrument landing
system) in the next year and it is expected that, if all of the tests go
well, the system will be activated later next year.

Dates for 2012 will be included in the

next issue of Connections!
