Our month of February has many activities

and celebrations planned. Our school is

busily getting ready for our annual French
Carnaval on February 6. This event is a true
celebration of our French Canadian culture and our students always enjoy the
songs, activities and maple syrup on the snow. This event could never take place
without the generous help we get from our volunteers. We realize that many of
you rearrange your day and work schedule to accommodate our needs. Un gros
MERCI to you!
The creation of our school plans rely largely on the feedback we receive from the Alberta Education
parent/student/teacher survey. Thank you for taking time to answer this survey.
Message from Alberta Education:
As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for
Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and teachers
on various aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and
provincial assessments of student learning.
From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar
Survey. In January, parents of students in grades 4, 5, 6 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. In
February, students in grades 4, 5, 6 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.
All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school. In addition to English
and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish,
Tagalog and Urdu.
Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child
is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.
Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2015, and will be reported publicly as part of
their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR 2015 2016

Children who turn 5 on or before March 1, 2016 are eligible to attend Kindergarten starting in September
2015. Please provide your childs birth certificate when registering at the office.

in May:
Kindergarten Parent Orientation Meeting: Thursday, May 28 at 7:00 PM

TEACHERS CONVENTION AND FAMILY DAY:

Teachers Convention is held Thursday and Friday, February 12 and 13, and Family Day is on Monday,
February 16. There will be no classes on those 3 days, therefore the students will enjoy a five-day long
weekend.

CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF CARING:

On January 28th our school community once again gathered together in our BFGs. Our theme was
centered on literacy and each teacher shared their favorite book. Our BFG families enjoyed going from
class to class and reading about a teachers selection. It was wonderful to show our students that even
adults had a favorite story, this prompted many great discussions. Tell your children about a special
book you read when you were younger. Instilling the love of reading in our children is the cornerstone
to strong literacy skills.
Our next BFGs will be on Thursday, February 26 at 9:30 AM.

SACRAMENTS RECEIVED IN JANUARY:

The following students of cole Blessed Mother Teresa have recently celebrated the sacrament of First
Reconciliation during the month of January. Congratulations to:
Summer H.

Michael J.

Noah P.

Please pray for them as they continue their Catholic faith development.
Please inform us if your child/children received or are receiving sacraments this year at St. Patricks, St.
Albert the Great, St. Bonaventure or in another parish. We wish to include everyone in our year-end
celebration recognizing faith development.

DANCE CLUB IS GEARING UP FOR DANCEWORKS 2015!

Dance Club update!
As you probably know, Dance Club runs Tuesdays and Thursdays at our school!
The Division 1 students danced steps before Christmas and practiced a routine
entitled Around the World. They did so well!!!
Now, in the New Year 2015, its time for the Division 2 students to have a go at it! Students in Grades 4,
5 and 6 are encouraged to come out and Dance on Tuesdays and Thursdays to learn a dance routine
together!
In late February, I will then invite all Grades K to 6, back for the large group rehearsals. We will be
rehearsing the Around the World number which will be performed at Calgary Catholics Annual
DANCEWORKS production in March.
Danceworks provides students the opportunity to present their creativity, choreography and dance spirit
in a performance/stage setting. If your child has participated in DANCEWORKS in previous years, then
they will tell you that its a very exciting and rewarding dance event! If your child has never participated
in this event, there will be more information coming your way soon, so stay tuned!!!
I would also like to thank Mme Laviolette and Mrs. Daer for helping us represent Mother Teresa at
DANCEWORKS with the design and purchase of Club T-shirts!
Thank you, and hope to see you at the show.
Yours in dance,
Mme Erika and Mme Lynn Del Castilho

This month, we are going to help children in Calgary schools enjoy a healthy lunch.
Take a brown paper bag and draw a picture on the front and back. You can include
a fun quote or a silly riddle. Inside the bag you can put a shiny loonie. This loonie
will be donated to Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids (BB4CK) which makes a healthy
lunch for a student who would otherwise go hungry.
(BB4CK) has one goal: No hungry kids in Calgary. They strive toward this goal each day
by providing healthy lunches directly to kids, by working with schools to identify kids who
are hungry and find ways to feed them.
Your project needs to be completed and ready for pick up or dropped off the week of
February 20, 2015.

We had another very successful movie night. Thank-you to Amanda V. for taking this on and organizing it, and
of course for once again having co-co brooks pizza made available to those who wished to order. With every
great leader, in order for an event to be successful, we need the wonderful volunteers to give of their time so all
are able to enjoy. So hats off to Lyne L., Joanne, Amy S., Brittany O., Paola G., Jennifer P., Lisa and Andre P., Ari
F., and last but not least, Wendy and Karen. All your efforts are so appreciated.
A big event in our Christian lives is coming up, that being Shrove Tuesday, which is on February 17th. Many
volunteers are needed for this, so please send your volunteer forms back of your availability.
I know many of you will be disappointed to know our next council meeting wont be until March. It may seem
like a long way away, but life has a habit of zipping by. I look forward to seeing you March 3 at 6:30pm in the
school library.
Heres to marking our half-way point of the school year,
Judy Bibby
School Council Chairperson

Special lunches have gone well so far. The grade 5 and 6 students have been
instrumental to the process. Lunch dates for the month of February are on
the 11th (Boston Pizza with gluten free options) and the 25th (Extreme Pita).

Thank-you to everyone for supporting the Westjet raffle. We have met our
fundraising goals for the year!! And to the lucky winner Jason Close, ticket being
sold be grade 6 student Angel, Bon Voyage to you as you jet-set off to your
choice destination.

Making memories
School days are full of great fun, friendship and memories. The school yearbook is a wonderful way to
preserve the memories that make the years at BMT so special.
Yearbooks are available online via https://ybpay.lifetouch.com at a cost of $20 until May 31, and $25
after that. Use code 10143015 to login.
Parents are welcome to submit photos from class or school-wide events to http://ow.ly/I4262. Be sure
to name photos with the classroom and event (i.e. 5KT rock climbing) so we know what were looking
at! Photos taken at high resolution are best. The yearbook committee will select a variety of photos
that highlight activities across grades. Photos that feature groups of students will be favoured over
shots of just one or two kids.

During the Lenten season, as we prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance and
spiritual discipline and reflect on Jesus's death and resurrection, please feel welcome to spend a few
minutes in the chapel for prayer.

Winter Fun for Everyone! Keeping Children Active

in the Winter Months
Snow, ice, cold and fog are just a few of the natural elements we
experience when autumn turns to winter. Although winter provides
us with a great excuse to cozy up inside and stay warm, this isnt
always the healthiest choice. Children often experience a variety of
distractions on a daily basis and the frosty winter weather is yet
another obstacle to getting the recommended amount of daily
physical activity. In order to overcome the cold, sometimes we all
need a little extra motivation! Here are some tips and helpful hints
on how to get the whole family outside and active this winter:

Get the whole family involved by building snow angels,

or, if youre really feeling ambitious, create your own lookalike snowperson family.

Try making the snow into your own work of art by

creating snow castles, mazes, or snow sculptures.

Take a slide on the wild side and go tobogganing (and dont forget a helmet).

Play snow-pitch, a traditional game of slow pitch isnt just for summer anymore! Try playing a game in your local
diamond out in the snow, for a fun twist on this great family pastime.

Create a more challenging game of hopscotch in the snow by using food coloring.

Dont forget snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Even if you dont own equipment, these items can generally
be rented at a variety of outdoor activity centres and parks.

Gear up and head to your local outdoor rink for a skate or a game of hockey.

High Fives for Healthy Teachers

Schools have been supporting student health for years but what about staff wellness? Just as wellness is important for
student success, it is also important for staff success. Healthier staff have better mental health, improved moods, and
more patience when working with students. Teachers are also important role models for students when it comes to healthy
behaviours.
Here some ways that you can support staff wellness at your childs school:

Support teachers professional development that includes wellness.

Recognize healthy habits you see in the school. If you see a teacher running to work, give that guy or gal a high
five!
If you have a special skill or knowledge related to wellness, share it with the school.
Do you want to thank the staff for a job well done? Steer clear of donuts and choose gifts that support health
instead (e.g., gift card to a bookstore, hand soap, fruit basket).
Send a thank you note to a good role model in your childs school.
Take care of your own wellness to be a positive example for teachers and students.

The people who work in our schools care for our most precious resources, our children; lets make sure they are able to
give their best by showing that we care about their health too. High Fives for Healthy Teachers!
