Dear Colleague:
I am writing to seek the extraordinary honor of representing you as your Speaker. As you know, I
have always been collegial in my approach. We all share the responsibility and the challenge of
representing our constituents and their needs while, at the same time, furthering our partys
Democratic principles. I am seeking your support to help further these goals.
If elected Speaker, I am fully committed to working with you to liberalize the operations of the
NYS Assembly. I believe that once we agree to reforms then we can be more responsive to the
citizens of New York State and, more specifically, to the needs of our constituents. While I have
some ideas regarding such reforms, I believe that your input is essential before any reforms are
actually introduced and passed. Regardless of who you choose to lead you, you must be sure that
you will have input as a full and equal participant in our endeavors. While we the Democratic
majority have always been committed to improving the upward mobility of our constituents, I am
equally committed to allowing each of you to achieve your goals and your potential as equal
members of this great institution. While there is something important to be said for seniority, and
honoring the expertise earned over the long haul, we need not do that by denying the ability of
other members to fully participate in our legislative system and structure.
I have been a full time legislator that has served over a long period of time with integrity and
respect. My loyalty, time and career have been dedicated to my constituents and to this
institution. I see my strength as one who works to unify. I believe my service has been
unassailable. I have been and will always continue to be available to you. During this effort to
gain your support I am available to meet with you individually and with your respective caucuses
to speak and answer your questions. But most importantly, I am available to listen to your ideas
and to seek your guidance and advice. Should you decide to honor me with your support you can
be assured I will work tirelessly to reflect your desires and needs as your leader.
We can weather this storm, but we have to do it together: upstate, downstate, suburbs, cities,
rural, urban. We will be stronger for it and I would be honored to have your support.
Sincerely,

Joseph R. Lentol
