Liebe Leserin,
lieber Leser,
wer erinnert sich eigentlich noch an seinen Englisch-Unterricht in der Schule?
Bei den meisten wird es wohl so gewesen sein: Am Anfang war man voll dabei,
hat Vokabeln gelernt und Grammatik gepaukt. Die ersten eigenen Schritte in der
neuen, fremden Sprache gingen noch wie von selbst. Und ging mal was daneben
beispielsweise das erste Gesprch mit einem echten Englnder , dann hat man
sich davon nicht entmutigen lassen.
Mit der Zeit hat die Begeisterung dann nachgelassen. Der Lehrer mag mich
nicht, die Hausaufgaben nerven, die Grammatik ist so frchterlich theoretisch;
wie von selbst fanden sich Grnde, warum es in der fremden Sprache nicht mehr
so lief.
Und irgendwann hatte man dann gar keine Lust mehr, sich mit der Sprache zu
beschftigen. Wie von selbst war das Feuer erloschen, und die wenigsten werden
aus eigenem Antrieb geschafft haben, es wieder zu entfachen.
Diesen Antrieb wollen wir Ihnen, liebe Leserin, lieber Leser, wieder geben. Mit
der neuentwickelten Wie-von-selbst-Sprachkursreihe geben wir Ihnen ein Mittel
an die Hand, mit dem das Sprachenlernen wieder Spa macht. Die Kurse der

Einleitung
Inhalt und Aufbau

Nehmen Sie zunchst das bungsbuch zur Hand, und machen Sie sich mit Inhalt
und Aufbau dieses Sprachkurses vertraut.
Der Sprachkurs erzhlt eine Geschichte. Sie begleiten Simon und Kristina, die beiden Protagonisten unseres Kurses, auf einer Reise durch deren Alltag. Sie erfahren, wie sich der erste Kontakt zwischen Kristina und Simon ergibt, wie die beiden sich kennen lernen, wie sie Small Talk betreiben, wie Kristina den erkrankten
Simon zu Hause besucht und ihm hilft, und wie sich Simon fr Kristinas Hilfe
revanchiert. Sie blttern mit den beiden ein Fotoalbum durch und schauen sich
Simons Wohnung an. Sie lauschen Gesprchen ber Fuball und Freundschaften,
ber Lieblingsgerichte und Fernsehsendungen. Und nicht zuletzt lernen Sie auch
Simons Mutter kennen. Sie erleben den Alltag der beiden mit seinen lustigen wie
auch weniger lustigen Seiten
Die Geschichte ist in 18 etwa gleich lange Abschnitte unterteilt. Jeder Abschnitt
enthlt etwa 450 bis 500 Wrter. Diese Lnge der Abschnitte ist optimal auf die
Aufnahmebereitschaft des Gehirns abgestimmt. Der Schwierigkeitsgrad der
Geschichte entspricht A2-B1 im Gemeinsamen Europischen Referenzrahmen fr
Sprachen. Sie sollten also gewisse Vorkenntnisse im Englischen mitbringen, bevor
Sie mit diesem Kurs beginnen. Aber keine Angst: Auch wenn Ihnen das Niveau
anfangs zu hoch erscheint, Sie werden sich sehr schnell daran gewhnen.
Jeder Abschnitt der Geschichte bietet den englischen Text zunchst zusammen mit
einer deutschen De-Kodierung und im Anschluss ohne diese. Eine De-Kodierung
ist eine speziell entwickelte Wort-fr-Wort-bersetzung, die die Struktur der fremden Sprache so weit wie mglich transparent macht und dabei den Inhalt eines
Textes noch verstndlich wiedergibt.

Einleitung
Auf den Tontrgern finden Sie die Audiofassungen der Geschichte von
Muttersprachlern vorgetragen. Die Geschichte ist hierbei in zwei verschiedenen
Geschwindigkeiten eingelesen, einmal in normalem Sprechtempo, bei dem die
Vortragenden ihrer Sprechfreude freien Lauf lassen, und einmal in langsamem
Sprechtempo, bei dem die Vortragenden etwas getragener sprechen und deutlicher
artikulieren. Damit Sie beim Hren nicht durch Gerusche abgelenkt werden,
haben wir bewusst darauf verzichtet, die Audiofassungen als Hrspiele aufzubereiten. Sie hren also nur gesprochene Sprache und sonst nichts.

Die Birkenbihl-Methode
Mit der Birkenbihl-Methode lernen bedeutet, mit einem Abschnitt der Geschichte
unseres Kurses die folgenden vier Schritte zu durchlaufen.
Schritt 1: De-Kodierung erfassen

Lesen Sie die deutsche De-Kodierung, und stellen Sie sich deren Inhalt bildlich
vor. Machen Sie den Inhalt zum Film. Tauchen Sie ganz in diesen Film ein, und
spren Sie ihn mit allen Sinnen. Wenn von kaltem Wetter die Rede ist, fhlen Sie
ein Frsteln auf der Haut; wenn von hungrigen Restaurantbesuchern die Rede ist,
hren Sie deren Mgen knurren; wenn von kstlichen Speisen die Rede ist, stellen
Sie sich vor, wie Ihnen das Wasser im Munde zusammenluft. Durch dieses
Verbildlichen und Erfassen mit allen Sinnen wird Ihnen der Inhalt der Geschichte
vertraut.
Ob der Film in Ihrem Kopf fertig ist, knnen Sie ganz einfach berprfen: Lassen
Sie ihn einfach laufen, und erzhlen Sie dann, was Sie vor Ihrem inneren Auge
sehen. Knnen Sie den Inhalt dann einigermaen vollstndig wiedergeben, so
haben Sie diesen Schritt erfolgreich gemeistert.
Schritt 2: Aktives Hren

Whrend Sie den englischen Text hren, lassen Sie den Film gleichzeitig vor Ihrem
inneren Auge ablaufen. So wird das Gehrte mit dem Vorgestellten auf natrliche
Weise verknpft. Damit Sie dem Gehrten leichter folgen knnen, fhren Sie
diesen Schritt zunchst mit der langsam gesprochenen Fassung durch.
Das Schlsselwort beim zweiten Schritt ist gleichzeitig. Sie hren den englischen Text und stellen gleichzeitig ein Bild dazu im Kopf bereit. Diese
Gleichzeitigkeit ist etwas vllig anderes als das bliche Vorgehen beim
Vokabellernen, wo man ein fremdsprachliches Wort und dessen deutsche
Bedeutung nacheinander vor sich hinmurmelt.

Das Ziel dieses Schrittes ist erreicht, wenn der Film vor Ihrem inneren Auge
gleichzeitig mit dem Gehrten abluft. Sie verstehen den Text dann, wenn Sie ihn
hren, denn Sprachverstndnis ist nichts anderes, als dass Ihr Gehirn Bilder zu
etwas Gehrtem erzeugt.
Schritt 3: Passives Hren

Whrend der englische Text leise im Hintergrund luft, gehen Sie Ihren normalen
Ttigkeiten nach. Hren Sie nicht bewusst zu. Das Gehrte geht direkt in Ihr
Unterbewusstsein ein. So entwickeln Sie ein Gefhl fr Melodie und Struktur der
Sprache. Sie fhlen die Sprache einfach.
Am Anfang ist der ungebte Lerner bei diesem Schritt oftmals unsicher: Nach
einiger Zeit des Nichtzuhrens hrt er doch wieder kurz bewusst zu, um zu testen,
ob das Gehrte schon in seinem Unterbewusstsein angelangt ist. Wenn Sie noch
keine Erfahrung mit passivem Hren haben, lassen Sie sich am Anfang ruhig Zeit.
Es dauert ein wenig, bis man ein Gefhl dafr entwickelt hat, wann ein Text im
eigenen Unterbewusstsein verankert ist.
brigens: Es soll Menschen geben, die ihren CD-Player mit einer Zeitschaltuhr
verbunden haben, und dann wird vom Aufstehen bis zum Schlafengehen passiv
gehrt ... Wenn Ihnen das fr den Anfang zu viel ist, dann beschrnken Sie das passive Hren zunchst auf Situationen, in denen Ihre Aufmerksamkeit ganz von einer
Sache in Beschlag genommen ist. Beim Fernsehen etwa, wenn Sie einen spannenden Krimi sehen, oder beim Autofahren, wenn Sie sich auf den Verkehr konzentrieren. Sie werden sehen, es funktioniert.
Schritt 4: Ab in die Praxis

Holen Sie den Text aus Ihrem Unterbewusstsein an die Oberflche. Sprechen Sie
ihn, lesen Sie ihn, schreiben Sie ihn. Bereiten Sie ihn fr Ihre persnlichen Zwecke
auf.

Wenn Sie Englisch sprechen lernen wollen, dann sprechen Sie zunchst mit den
Sprechern im Chor. Wenn Sie Englisch lesen lernen wollen, dann lesen Sie den
Text, whrend Sie die Geschichte vom Band hren. Wenn Sie Englisch schreiben
lernen wollen, dann schreiben Sie den Text ab. Da man den Text schon gut kennt,
ist dies weit weniger stupide, als mancher befrchtet.
Bei diesem Schritt sind Ihrer Fantasie keine Grenzen gesetzt.

experience. You arrive in new surroundings, because you have moved
home or are starting a new job, and you try to make a connection with
your new neighbours or colleagues. How do you go about it? Exactly,
you look for common interests. And which common interest is the
most likely? Correct. Football. But what do you do if you have
absolutely no interest in football? Feign interest?
I cannot shake the feeling that Kristina is trying to do precisely that

Tell me, when I visited you at home recently, you were wearing a
football scarf. Are you a fan?
Simon:

Kristina:
And whats your favourite team? One of the local ones here in Berlin?
