conventions of real media products.

Generic conventions

Linear narrative

Dramatic non-diegetic soundtrack

Clear binary opposites

Close ups/insert shots and key high

lighting

Did our film conform or challenge

them?
With our film we chosen not to have a
linear narrative as we started our film
with its ending. This was to add more
emphasis on the final battle between
Rebecca and the General. This
challenges the generic convention of
action comedy film as normal the
narrative would be straight forward
with a series of predictable events
however with ours we also left it on a
cliff hanger meaning that the viewer
doesnt know who wins or loses
making it unpredictable.
Within our film we have used a
dramatic non-diegetic soundtrack to
build up tension and suspense in
action packed scenes for example the
final battle. By conforming to this our
film suits the genre in which it is and
also builds the scenes texture in order
to create a more realistic feel to the
scene. Also in addition, I created the
soundtrack myself from scratch. This
meant that I could pick and choose
the instruments that I felt suited the
scene, tailoring the music to our
needs.
In our film we conform to this as it is
clear that the boys are against the
girls from the beginning. This shown
from the girls plotting their attack
against the boys in the first few
scenes of the film. Also throughout the
film we see the conflict between the
genders when they are shooting each
other around the house. This shows
the clear divide between protagonist
and antagonist within the film
common within the action comedy
genre.
Within our film, while filming, we
discovered that it was really hard to
have consist lighting due to the time
of year that we were filming. Because
the sun was setting earlier it meant
that we had less time to film during
the day. As a result of this the high
key lighting that is common within this

Fast paced editing

Romantic sub plot

Male protagonists

genre of film is challenged as we have

a variation of lighting throughout the
film. As we filmed some of our film in
summer half of the film has good key
lighting however the closer to winter
the more artificial light we had to use,
especially in the main house and
certain scenes such as the final battle
between Rebecca and the General. As
for close ups, have several to
emphasis the comedic aspect of the
fact that they are using toy weaponry.
This conforms to action comedy genre
as it shows the childish nature of the
film which is needed for the comedy
aspect of the genre.
We conformed to this convention as it
is essential for this film to be regarded
within this genre. The faced pasted
takes on the action section of the
genre as it adds suspense and
tensions within scenes. An example of
this in out film is the final battle in
which there is a lightsaber fight. The
quick paced shots add the emphasis
of adrenaline and tension as the two
battle it out leaving the audience in
suspense of whos going to win.
We chose to challenge this convention
as it didnt make sense with our plot.
The girls are against the boys (trying
to kill them) so it wouldnt make sense
for one of them to fall in love with one
of them. Also the sub plot of our film
states that the girls have been
wronged by the boys meaning that
both sides despise each other. We also
challenged it to represent the
independence of the girls as usually
woman are objectified within film.
We chose to challenge this within our
film as the girls are the protagonist
and the boys are antagonists. This
challenges the convention are usually
within this genre boys are the
protagonists are girls are the damsel
in distress. We chose to stray away
from this to show independence and
dominance within the female
characters to create more of a conflict

between the two genders. This
creates a countertype for women
within film and also means that
women in the audience may connect
with the characters within the film
more. Also these characters oppose
the boys and help to create a more
realistic vibe within the conflict.
