St. Boniface to Highlight

Technology Upgrades at Open House
St. Boniface Catholic School is the premier choice for private faithbased education for Germantown and the surrounding communities.
For decades, St. Boniface School has been providing students with the
opportunity to achieve academic excellence while developing a
strong moral compass. They continuously strive to foster a well-rounded education that develops the spiritual, academic, physical, artistic,
social and emotional characteristics of each child. In order to provide
the students with academic success, St Boniface School is committed
to a continuous review of their technology and programs offered to
ensure students success.
New for the 2014/2015 School year:
The entire computer lab has been upgraded with all new
Chromebooks equipped with Google for Education. The versatility of
the Chromebooks has allowed the school integrate technology into
classrooms throughout the school.
K4-1st grade utilizes IPad minis to enhance their curriculum.
Accelerated Reader and STAR Reading Enterprise have been
added to individualize and enhance students learning experience.
S.T.E.M. Club (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) has
been taken to the next level this year with the S.T.E.M.-azing Race,
DNA exploration, a visit later this year from a Geotechnical Engineer,
and other hands on learning experiences.
In addition to continuously upgrading our facilities, St Boniface
offers individualized instruction to our students as well.

St. Boniface School employs an intervention specialist dedicated to

working one on one or in small groups with students who need extra
help in reading. The intervention specialist also offers an after-school
study hall where students can complete their homework and request
help when needed.
St. Boniface School also is fortunate to have a dedicated math specialist for the past sixteen years. In addition to tutoring students individually and in groups, our math specialist coordinates our annual
Math Fair which is
an unique, fun-filled
school event.
These enhancements to education,
classrooms, teachers
and much more will
be showcased at St.
Boniface Catholic
Schools
Open
House to be held on

Dear Dr. Winter, I need implants in my upper and lower

arches. I have had several consultations and opinions all over
the board! Some of the consults said I only needed 4 implants
for the upper and 4 for the lower and others have said I need
just two for the lower. I did tell them I wanted to be able to
have teeth that didnt come out and I dont have a lot of bone
in either arch. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Jack J.
Dear Jack, there are several good questions here. I will try
and break them down and I encourage you and the readers to
read my articles on Upgradeable Dentistry and Advanced
Treatment
Planning
under
publications
at:
www.hamptondentalassociates.com where I have written
articles about these very questions. I also outline in various
publications the differences between removable overdentures
and fixed implant bridges and show examples of each type of
implant treatment.
First of all, without a consultation and x-rays I cannot
comment on your specific situation. The number of implants
you require is dependent upon the quality and quantity of
your remaining bone, your budget and the type of prosthesis
you require. Whether the implant restoration should be
fixed or non-removable by the patient or whether it is
acceptable to remove the implant supported denture and take
it out at night is a personal decision and both have advantages
and disadvantages. Most people that lose their teeth want
fixed teeth. In addition, the patients health, medication(s)
and anatomy all play a role in deciding upon the ideal implant
restoration. It is important to note that sometimes we can start
with a removable implant denture due to budgetary
constraints and add implants over a year or two and Upgrade
to a fixed restoration or bridge when finances allow!
Next, we can discuss the number of required implants. In
the upper arch most people have already been wearing a
denture or partial and they have already undergone bone loss.
As bone is lost in the upper jaw the sinuses expand and in
order to place implants in this area there is a need to grow
the bone by doing a sinus grafting procedure and possibly a
block grafting procedure. This sinus augmentation is a
procedure that will allow implants of normal length to be
placed in the posterior upper jaw. A way to bypass this is a
zygomatic or long implant that is used in an all-on-four
procedure. This procedure will place 4 implants at angles that
are used to support a full arch of denture teeth or a hybrid
prosthesis. This may be a predictable procedure but replacing
14 teeth (24 roots) with 4 implants doesnt provide as large a
margin of safety as using 7-9 implants per arch. This is a
matter of philosophy and the treating implant dentist and
surgeon will be able to explain their philosophy based upon

Riveredge Nature Center events

The following events will be taking
place this week at Riveredge Nature
Center.
Science for Everyone: The
Milwaukee River and How Ozaukee Co.
has Changed It for the BetterTuesday, Jan.
20, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Come, learn and enjoy
Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter
their education, skill and judgment.
As far as the two-implant option given to you for your
lower arch, this is strictly to support a lower overdenture,
which is removable. In order to have a fixed restoration
(non-removable) you would require a minimum of 6
maxillary and 5 mandibular implants in my practice. That
being said if you are able to place more implants and overengineer the situation you are always better off, as these
extra implants will redistribute chewing forces over 6-9
implants, instead of just four.
We offer complimentary implant consultations or
comprehensive examination and x-ray visits to our readers.
Please call us at 414-464-9021 to schedule your visit! We
look forward to meeting you. You may see examples of our
dentistry at www.winterdental.com
We would like to also congratulate Dr.Rick on his ABOI

Falls School Board approves

legislative platform

Templeton seventh grade Technology and Engineering students Kristin Weisbrod

and Hunter Frederick learn about plastic injection molding by forming air dragster wheels using equipment donated by the Milwaukee Society of Plastics
Engineers Education Foundation. Submitted photo.

Plastics society gives

Templeton grants for program
For the third time since 2008, the
Milwaukee Society of Plastics Engineers
(SPE) Education Foundation awarded
Templeton Middle School Technology
and Engineering Department a sizable
grant to update machines used in the
classroom.
This years $4,270 grant will replace
three injection molding machines that the
SPE Foundation originally purchased for
the school in 2008. The machines
became a key component in the technology and engineering curriculum with
thousands of middle school students
using them since then.
The SPE Foundation provided a total
of $12,034 in grants over the years
which in addition to the three injection
molding machines resulted in the acquisition of a vacuum thermoformer and
benchtop CNC mill.
All Templeton seventh-graders take a
quarterlong technology and engineering

course, and eighth-graders have the

option of taking a yearlong class. In seventh grade, students study the design
process, drafting, 3D modeling and printing, and wood and plastic fabrication
processes. Students in the eighth grade
elective course continue to study concepts covered in the required course and
advance to electricity, robotics, transportation, software coding, material
properties and structures.
Templeton Technology and
Engineering Department has received a
number of quality recognition awards.
Templeton was named a School of STEM
Excellence in 2011by Project Lead The
Way, the Wisconsin Middle School
Program of the Year in 2012 by the
Wisconsin
Technology
Education
Association, and a Program of Excellence
in 2013 by the International Technology
and Engineering Education Association.

The Menomonee Falls School Board

approved a legislative platform Jan. 12 that
details its concerns about funding and programming for public education.
The platform highlights areas such as standards and flexibility in other regulations.
The state needs to sustain adequate funding for required state programming. The state
has significantly increased the expectations for
performance, but the funding needed has not
been adequately addressed. The state has
increased the technology needed to meet state
testing requirements, increased requirements for
student interventions, and mandated identification and intervention for special education
needs; none of these recent requirements are
adequately funded. These have placed additional pressures on the already limited district
budget, district officials said in the statement.
The tools of Act 10 have been implemented.
Our district has reached a practical limit to use
these tools, and remain competitive in the
southeast Wisconsin region.
District officials noted that in response to
Act 10, the district changed to a high
deductible self funded plan while district
salaries and benefits rank in the middle of
neighboring districts.
We have reached a practical limit in
order to retain experienced staff and attract
staff in hard to hire areas, district officials stated.
To address funding issues affecting
Menomonee Falls, district officials suggested:
Increase the revenue limit each year of
the 2015-17 biennial budget to avoid further
impact on class size, programming, maintenance, and staffing.
Focus specific support for declining
enrollment districts through greater categorical
aid.
Increase open enrollment reimbursement to align with the base educational cost of
$9200 per student.

Increase the reimbursement rate for special education to 30% of the prior years costs
that are eligible for aid. This rate has dropped
steadily from 70% in 1980 to 26% in 2014.
The statement also asked the state to allow
for flexibility with the Sept. 1 school start date.
By state law, public schools cannot begin until
Sept. 1 or later each fall.
Providing flexibility for local school
boards to adjust the calendar will help better
prepare students for the national expectations
of the Advanced Placement Testing which
begins on May 1st. Our parents value our
approach to college and career readiness, but
this still stands in our way, the platform said.
All board members agreed with that portion of the platform. The platform also calls for
a level playing field needs to be available to
all systems receiving public tax dollars. We ask
that the measurement systems, state aid, and
state mandates be equally applied to all systems educating children with public funding.
Innovation and waivers should be equally
accessible to all publically funded schools.
That portion of the platform calls for the
state to Increase local school board control
and authority in setting any waivers or modifications to the state required accountability system and educational standards. Any assessments or standards waived for one publically
funded educational option should be available
to all local school boards.
The section also states: Alternatively, create one state-wide accountability system for all
publically funded schools to ensure equal
responsibility to the taxpayers.
That section referenced voucher schools,
which receive state vouchers but do not have to
comply with all the state testing requirements or
regulations. Board member Paul Tadda indicated he did not agree with that portion of the platform.
