Sometimes, the best a destination has to offer cant be found in your Frommers
guide. High above the heavily-trafficked Napa Valley floor and hundreds of
pretentious, monotonous wineries, sits a century-old treasure: Pope Valley Winery.
This scenic road less traveled, draped with vineyards and offering panoramic views
of the picturesque Napa Valley, leads you northeast of the Silverado Trail and back in
time to 40 quaint, country acres. Here, the Burgundy Wine and Olive Oil Factory was
founded in 1897, a three-story gravitational winery that shipped wine by train to Al
Capones Chicago speakeasies during Prohibition. A century later, it was purchased by
the Eakle family, long-time Pope Valley Residents, and given new life.
The winery no longer sells to gangsters, but not too much else has changed. Pope
Valley Winerys mark of authenticity is signed and sealed with the nineteenth century
farming equipment, hand dug cave and original blacksmith shop, farmhouse and
wagon shed, all still on the property.
In 2009, siblings David Eakle as winemaker and Diana Eakle Hawkins as general
manager, took hold of the reins with the goal of bringing Pope Valley Winery to the
next level of quality, distinction and recognition. They hand-craft 5,000 cases of fine
wines a year, among them the Estate Reserve Cab and Merlot Eakle Ranch, which both
won Best in Class for their 2010 vintages at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine
Competition. Theyre known for their Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel Port, and a very
rare Old Vine Chenin Blanc, and produce Sangiovese Ros, Sauvignon Blanc and
Zinfandel as well.
Visitors who are welcomed like old friends can embark on one-of-a-kind tours
of the historic grounds and through the cave, which took nine long years to dig. A
variety of tasting options include custom wine flights, picnics, a private view of the
vineyards from their 1897 Lounge and a Brunch & Bubbles Experience for the early
birds. Wine Club members can even get away for a night with a stay in the original
farmhouse, sipping wine under a bright sky completely blanketed in stars.
No need for frills, extravagance or even paved roads. The only bells and whistles
youll find here is literally on old ringing bell on a big oak tree. Pope Valley Winery
prides itself in staying true to its historic, Old Napa roots, while making fine wines that
can compete with the best of the New Age Valley below.

V. SATTUI WINERY
130 Years and Counting of Great Wines and Fun Times!
BY JOSH STEIN
V. Sattui Winery
& Italian Market
Napa Valle y
28
If its a good time with great wines you are looking for, avoid the guessing games and go
up to V. Sattuis organic thirty-eight acres south of St. Helena to be treated right and to taste
some of the finest winery-only releases in the Valley without attitude or pretension. Its that
very sense that the customer experience matters most that will have you return again and
again. V. Sattui, one of the originators of the modern wine country experience, hasnt
forgotten why people come to Napa Valley, and they always overdeliver. Were not the only
ones who have noticed, by the way; their head of winemakng, Brooks Painter, was named
Winemaker of the Year in 2013, and again in 2014. The winery itself has been named
Winery of the Year or Best Winery in Northern California more than half a dozen times in the
last decade.
At the same time, this 130-year-old winery is well known for good wines at good prices,
but thats not what inspires such loyalty for the winery and its all-winery-only releases. Its
that theyve never forgotten where theyve come from or what truly matters in the wine
business. The winery itself is named after owner Dario Sattuis pioneering San Francisco
vintner great-grandfather, Vittorio Sattui, who founded the enterprise as St. Helena Wine
Cellars on then-Montgomery Street, now-Columbus Avenue in 1885. In 1899, the winery
relocated to the Mission District as V. Sattui Wine Co. The winery closed production in
1921 because of Prohibition, but Dario, remembering his childhood amongst the barrels and
tanks of the old underground cellar, refounded the winery in St. Helena in 1975, intent upon
a wine experience modeled on a small European village, where visitors would feel
encouraged to stay and feel part of wine country and its great wines without pretense or

Best Winery in Napa award for 5 consecutive years in the Bay Area A-List.
2012 Winery of the Year by Connoisseurs guide to fine wine.
Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

The Barlow is Sebastopols newest and most hip place to be in Sonoma Countys world of food
and drink. Home to dozens of artisanal boutiques, local-centric food markets, wine tasting rooms
and craft breweries, The Barlow truly has something for everyone much like Woodfour
Brewing Companys eclectic menu and extensive craft beer offerings. Woodfour Brewing
Company is the only craft brewery in The Barlow with a local, seasonal menu that is meant to be
paired with beer. The array of farmhouse-inspired craft beer is just as eclectic as their delicious
lunch and dinner menus. Rightly so, because Executive Chef Aaron Wright works closely with
Co-Owner and Brewmaster Seth Wood to develop invigorating dishes that are perfectly tailored to
fit the beer styles.
When it comes to food and beer pairing, beer takes a seasonal role and then we complement
the beer with dishes that are influenced by the season, Owner Olav Vier says. Currently, their
lunch and dinner menus feature winter root vegetables such as potatoes and beets, alongside
dishes with hardy legumes and beans. Creamy cheeses, pickled goodies, flavorful appetizers and
diverse salads all designed to complement the flavors of the beers make way for the seafood
and meat portion of the menu, which is full of arctic char, Dungeness crab, farm chicken,
bratwurst and pork belly.
Theres a certain expectation people have when they come to a place like this a brewery,
Wood states. With a menu that features sophisticated dishes, such as the braised pork belly with
sunchoke, apple crumble, chicories and baby leeks, guest expectations are surely exceeded once
the food comes to the table. Pair these phenomenal dishes with the nuanced and flavorful
selection of craft beers, and youve got yourself an authentic wine country food and beer pairing

A distinctive property
The Inn at the Tides quaint cluster of guest lodges are
tiered along a hillside property, designed to preserve and
meld with the coastal surroundings. A majority of the first
floor rooms have private patios, where guests often catch a
glimpse of deer and other wildlife scampering throughout
the grounds. Bodega is lively spot for bird watchers where
hundreds of birds migrate such as egrets, blue herons,
sandpipers and ospreys.

Winery Database
What makes Winery Geek so convenient is the ability to search for
wineries nearby. Users are provided with a list or map view that
indicates the wineries closest to his or her location; users can click on
any given winery/location and then view a detailed listing including
hours, directions, a click-to-call link, a link that pulls up the winerys
official website and a link that pulls up the winerys Yelp page all
without leaving the Winery Geek app.
As the leading wine tourism publication in Californias wine
country since 1981, Wine Country This Week is best equipped to
meet this need for comprehensive information about Californias
wineries, Giangreco says. We have a complete and expansive
database that we feel is highly beneficial to individuals who enjoy
wine tasting in California. We are very excited to offer Winery Geek
as a service of Wine Country This Week.
Search Features
Unique features of Winery Geek include the ability to search for
wineries by varietals offered or specific attributes including caves,
family or pet friendly, food and wine pairing, picnic areas, vineyard or
winery tours and much more! These unique search features help
narrow down their choices when selecting which wineries to visit.
Tasting Deals
Since 1981, Wine Country This Week has maintained longstanding relationships with wineries, making them perfectly poised to
bring Winery Geek users a wide range of tasting deals. Users are be
able to visit a winery, claim the tasting deal with the app and
experience a range of savings on individual wine tasting visits.
Such features are distinguishing marks of Winery Geek and are the
reasons why the initial response to the app has been overwhelmingly
positive. Since the soft launch in July, Winery Geek has seen over
3,500 downloads in just two months!
For more information on Winery Geek, a service of Wine Country
This Week, visit www.winerygeek.com. To join the conversation,

Wine Country This Week, founded in 1981, is the most widely
read and only weekly publication designed to be a comprehensive
guide for the millions of annual visitors who travel to California wine
country. The magazine and www.winecountrythisweek.com keep
visitors updated about wineries, tasting rooms and more. Wine
Country This Week distributes more than 750,000 copies annually at
more than 1,000 distribution points throughout California.
The website, www.winecountrythisweek.com, is updated weekly
and contains all of the print publication features, including printable
winery maps, a more comprehensive events calendar and archived
back issues of Wine Country This Week and its sister publication
Wine Country This Month: Central Coast.
