EN 14399-4 High Strength Hexagon Structural Bolts

Property Class 10.9
All bolts shall meet the requirements of EN 14399-4 together with the additions and
clarifications contained in this Purchase Specification. Where there is any conflict between
and this Purchase Specification and EN 14399-4, the requirements of this Purchase
Specification shall prevail.
1.0 Materials
1.1 Bolts shall be made from steel conforming to the chemical composition limits specified in

The alloy steel shall contain a minimum quantity of any of the following elements chromium,
nickel, molybdenum or boron* sufficient to meet the hardenability and mechanical property
requirements of 1.2 and the mechanical properties of section 5 and Table 4.
* If the steel contains boron the chemical composition limits for boron shall be 0.0005 min to
0.003 max.
2
The non metallic inclusion content of the steel shall not exceed the limit in 1.3
1.2 The steel used for the manufacture of the bolts shall possess sufficient hardenability to
ensure a structure consisting of 90% martensite in the core of the roll effective part of the bolt
(i.e. the part which will be threaded) in the as hardened condition before tempering.
1.3 Non-metallic Inclusion Content - Total sum value for an individual cast when tested in
accordance with DIN 50602 shall be K3 < 20 (Oxides and Sulphides together)
1.4 The material shall be free from piping, central unsoundness, harmful segregation and
other harmful internal and external defects. The material shall have a high standard of
surface quality and shall not contain defects detrimental to the end products
1.5 Control of Toxic Heavy Metals Neither the bolts, nuts, washers nor any coating applied
to them shall contain any lead, mercury, cadmium or hexavalent chromium.

2.0 Manufacture
2.1 Bolts shall be manufactured by forging. Machining of bolts from bar shall not be
permitted.
3.0 Heat Treatment
3.1 Bolts shall be oil quenched and tempered under uniform conditions in order to comply
with all the requirements of EN ISO 898-1 Property Class 10.9, the mechanical properties
specified in section 5 of this specification together with the following additional requirements
The tempering temperature used shall not be less than 425C.
There shall not be any carburization of the surface of the bolts
There shall not be any total decarburization (ferrite) on the surface of the bolts
There shall be 90% martensite minimum in the core of the threaded section of the bolts in the
as hardened condition.
The tensile strength of the hardened and tempered bolts shall be in the range 1040 N/mm
minimum to 1140 N/mm maximum and Charpy V-notch 27J minimum at -20C
The maximum surface hardness of the bolts shall be 375 HV 0.3
For one manufacturing lot heat treatment batch the variation in the tensile strength and the
0.2% proof stress of the bolts shall be as small as practicable with the aim that this variation
shall not exceed 3%.
4.0 Dimensions
4.1 The bolts shall conform to the dimensions specified in Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 2 and
Table 3A or Table 3B, as appropriate, and the geometrical tolerances shall be in accordance
with ISO4759-1 Product Grade B.

5.2 Impact Test - Charpy 2mm V notch test pieces shall be prepared and tested from the all
sizes of bolts in accordance with EN 10045-1 and ISO 148 and the location of the test pieces
shall be in accordance with ISO 898-1 section 8.7.
The impact tests shall meet the following requirement Kv min. = 27J at -20C
6.0 Manufacturing Lot and Number of Tests
6.1 The following definition of a manufacturing lot and shall apply
A quantity of bolts of a single size, manufactured from bar, wire or rod from a single cast,
processed through the same steps at the same time or over continuous time period through
the same heat treatment process.
NOTE 1 Same heat treatment or coating process means:
- for a continuous process, the same treatment cycle without any setting
modification;
- for a discontinuous process, the same treatment cycle or identical consecutive
loads (batches).

6.2 For each manufacturing lot a set of three tensile tests and three Charpy 2mm V notch
test shall be carried out and all tests shall satisfy the requirements of section 5.0.
7.0 Marking.
7.1 The top of the heads of all the bolts shall be identified by embossed marking with the
Coronet logo, HV, 10.9. The heads of the M42, M48, M56 and M64 bolts shall also be
identified by embossed marking with the installation torque, as shown in Table 6.

In addition for all sizes of bolts a unique lot I.D. marking shall be required on each
manufacturing lot and a unique supplier I.D. may also be required, these additional markings
will be detailed in the Specification Issue Sheet.
8.0 Finish
8.1 The Purchase Order shall state the finish required. If the bolts are required self colour
they shall be supplied in the clean metal shot blasted condition with all traces of scale
removed. Under no circumstances shall the bolts be cleaned by any chemical means i.e. acid
pickling of the bolts is strictly prohibited.
When the bolts are required hot dip galvanized this shall be in accordance with ISO 10684
with a local coating thickness of 40 microns minimum and a batch average coating thickness
of 50 microns minimum. With the exception of the removal of any oil and grease, which may
necessitate immersion in alkaline cleaners, soaps or detergents, all items must be descaled
mechanically by blasting. Acid pickling of the bolts is strictly prohibited. Galvanizing
shall be carried out at a bath temperature of 455C to 480C. Galvanizing shall not be
carried out at a bath temperature of above 480C.
9.0 Certification
9.1 For each lot of bolts, test certificates, include the following requirements, shall be
submitted for the attention of the quality director, prior to the goods being shipped.
9.2 Cast / Heat analysis, cast/heat number, test number and unique manufacturing lot I.D.
9.3 Results of all three tests for 0.2% proof stress, tensile strength, % elongation after
fracture, % reduction area after fracture, core hardness, surface hardness and Charpy 2mm
V notch tests at -20C.
9.4 Results of decarburization tests.

9.5 Statement of compliance with dimensional requirements.

9.6 Purchase order number.
9.7 Title and signature of the individual assigned certification responsibility by the company
management.
9.8 Failure to include all the required information, detailed above, on the certificate shall be
cause for rejection.
10.0 Supplier Responsibility Packing, Disclaimer & Declaration
10.1 The supplier is responsible for ensuring the bolts supplied conform with the
requirements of this specification and also with the requirements for Packing, Disclaimer and
Declaration detailed in the Specification Issue Sheet. The supplier shall maintain records for
future reference which ensure the bolts supplied are fully traceable.
10.2 When a supplier receives the first order for these bolts he shall in addition to the
requirements of this specification also comply with the initial trial batch approval requirements
specified in the Specification Issue Sheet.
