t was a chilly day when

Stephanie Helling and her
boyfriend, Greg Parker,
decided to spend a day
wandering through the
South Carolina State Museum.
Stephanie was a legal reporter
for local television station WACH
Fox, and her schedule was hectic.
Working days and weekends, she
was happy to have some time off
to spend with Greg.
After leaving the museum,
Greg asked if she wanted to take
a stroll down to the nearby
Riverwalk. It might be an unusual choice for a chilly afternoon,
but it was pretty outside and she
didnt think much about it.
They strolled and talked until
he stopped and said, You know
how much I love you, right?
Stephanie pointed to a necklace
with an infinity symbol that he
had given her and said, Yeah,
you love me this much.
Greg reached into his pocket
and pulled out a ring. No, actually, he said, its this much.
I dont think he even asked
me to marry him right away,
Stephanie recalls of the
moment Greg proposed. I just
kept saying Oh my goodness!
Wow! He finally said, I guess
thats yes? and I said, Of

course its yes.

Were not very showy people,
Stephanie
says,
Whenever it comes to special,
private moments, we like to
just have it the two of us. We
dont like talking about ourselves too much. Thats why I

thought the engagement was

just perfect. It was just the two
of us, and we were in our blue
jeans. It felt very much like us.

school. Even though both went
to USC for their undergraduate
degrees, they didnt meet until
the second year of their law
program. It was January 2012,
and they were put on the same
mock trial competition team.
I thought he was really cute,
says Stephanie. Not only that,
he was smart, humble, and
family-oriented. He is one of
the best people you will ever
meet. Just down to his core, he
is just so good, thats what really drew me to him, I guess.
As a law student, Stephanie
recalls, Greg demonstrated a
work ethic and intelligence
that has translated into a successful career. He doesnt
complain. He works hard all
the time. He really puts me and
his family ahead of himself.
Thats also what let me know
quickly that he was different.
In fact, Stephanie and Greg
already had a connection when
they met. Stephanies best
friend and future maid of
honor, Elizabeth McCool, was
dating a close friend of Gregs.
With Elizabeths encouragement, Stephanie and Greg
agreed to a double date.
They officially became a

couple on Valentines Day,

when Greg came over early in
the morning and set up little
presents and a sweet card.
They dated for two years
before he proposed, on Martin
Luther King Day in 2014.
I always felt like a priority
to him. No matter how busy he
was, theres never been one
day that I did not feel that way.
I always feel like I was number
one, like everything he does is
for us. I truly feel like I found
my equal, my partner, and
thats why I knew I wanted to
marry him.

planning, Stephanie was
the most grateful for her
mother, who was able to bring
the brides wishes about the
big day to life. Stephanie wanted a comfortable, countrychic wedding that would be a
good blend of the two of them,
like filling a Mason jar with
pearls.
I wasnt one of those little
girls who grew up dreaming
about my perfect wedding
day, says Stephanie. I just
knew how I wanted the day to
feel, and I wanted it to be very
comfortable and relaxed. I
wanted it to feel
very much like
me and Greg. I
didnt want it to
feel like it was a
celebration
where we were
trying to be anybody besides
who we are.
The couple
chose Palmetto
Collegiate
Institute
in
Lexington for
their
venue,
where they married on Nov. 8,
2014. Of the wedding day,
Stephanie says, I feel like the
Lord was watching over the
whole process. It felt very
blessed.
Stephanies mothers creative influence added a few
fun and original pieces to the

wedding. I think my mom

was on Pinterest the whole
time we were engaged,
Stephanie says.
Mason jars were spray-painted with the wedding colors and
filled with pearls and flowers.
In addition, her parents drove
all the way to Piedmont to purchase
refurbished doors
from historic
buildings that
were later decorated
with
wreaths
and
urns to mark the
entrance on the
big day.
Near
the
entrance was a
flowered vintage table from
her
parents
home, which held programs in
a small basket and two framed
photos of Stephanies parents
and grandparents on their
wedding days.

father, Greg Parker Sr., as the
best man and Elizabeth
McCool as maid of honor.
Elizabeth was there from
the
beginning,
says
Stephanie, I couldnt have
asked for a better maid of
honor.
The bridesmaids wore navy
blue and carried magenta,
purple and pink bouquets.
Charged with preserving
the big day was photographer, Neva Loftis (Neva Loftis

teacher and yearbook advisor. She has been a professional photographer for six
years.
I taught the groom, his
brother, and one of the cousins in the wedding, says
Neva, adding that Greg
played football with her son.
Stephanie is absolutely
adorable, says Neva, who
gushes over the brides pleasant, grateful and calm
demeanor.

Theyre a smaller store, but the selection
is beautiful, and the staff is phenomenal,
she says.
The vendors were all wonderful, the bride
says. Big Time Entertainment provided DJ
services. Southern Way catered, and White
House Florist provided floral arrangements.
Stephanie says that as a bride, its important to stay focused on what is most important. The day really was about celebrating
me and Greg, and that really helps keep a lot
of the stress away. Even if everything isnt
exactly how I envisioned, the ultimate goal is
to marry the love of your life.
Even if its monsooning and all the food
goes up in flames, honestly, at the end of the
day, you get to marry your husband and thats

any girls dream of an elaborate wedding in a vast

church filled with the glow of candlelight. For Colishia Wilson Dunbar, her girlhood vision involved
a ceremony in a lush, flowering garden. Most
importantly, she wanted an outdoor wedding.
This past September, Colishias dream was realized in Lexington at 403 North Lake, where both her ceremony and her
reception occurred under a tent illuminated with hundreds of
sparkling lights.

occurred out of doors. On
July 14, 2013, she was walking
along a South Carolina shoreline
during the early morning hours
with Christopher Dunbar. The
two had been co-workers for
eight years before a relationship
began to blossom and solidify.
Colishia says it was a moment she will never forget: He
expressed his love for her and how he could not imagine life
without her, and the next thing she knew, he had one knee in
the sand and presented a ring.
I was so shocked, says Colishia. I kept saying, Are you serious? Are you serious?
She learned that on the previous evening, Christopher had
asked her father for her hand in marriage.

fter the wedding date

was set for Sept. 20, 2014,
Christopher and Colishia,
both native South Carolinians,
settled on 403 North Lake primarily because they both considered it the most beautiful
out of all the outdoor venues
visited.
Ideas for a theme motif lanterns with a touch of burlap
and other details came from
such sites as The Knot and
Etsy. Christopher helped her
choose a photographer, Katie
Hart of Hart Photography, and
assisted in choosing invitations and other details. He was
also responsible for making
sure his side of the family was
informed and accommodated;
it was important to make arrangements for two of his
grandparents, who use wheelchairs.
The couple decided to put
aside extra funds for a vid-

Hart says the nighttime
setting and the illumination
of the natural, wooded venue
provided an excellent backdrop for distinct photography.
She says the wedding, though
out of doors, was both elegant
and stylish.

A rain plan involved using a

carriage house on the property. But Colishia says the weather was perfect no rain, no
humidity, high 60s.
Colishias favorite memory
is walking down the aisle and
seeing her husband-to-be wipe
away tears. Christopher says
she was stunning in her dress.
Colishia and Christopher
agree that the wedding exceeded their expectations. They,
along with their guests, not
only enjoyed the outdoor ceremony, but also eating dinner
and dancing under the massive tent. A DJ with Big Time
Entertainment provided music, while dual screens showed
music videos and moments
captured during the reception.
Plus, there was a photo booth
and a bubble machine.
The newly married couple,
who reside in Gaston, agree
that the setting, weather, uplighting, scenery, openness,
and nature made for an ideal
outdoor wedding.

ByFarr hand-drew leaves, designed wax seals, and collaborated with calligrapher Lydia

Stephanie told Lacy that she
wanted to carry leaves over into
the design of the wedding as

we built an arbor with ribbons

wanted to have a really good bar.
After taking their vows underneath a floral arbor on the practice green, Stephanie and Adam

a naked cake, topped with autumn blooms,

Shennice Cleckley with My Dessert Bar served

followed by dancing outside, with portable heaters to ward off the autumn chill.
Despite all the intricate planning, Stephanie recalls most fondly a couple of unscripted moments. During the ceremony, a hot-air
balloon happened to fly over the golf course.
And afterward, photographer Lucas Brown
managed to arrange an impromptu photo
shoot on the golf course at sunset.
On the way down and on the way back, I
got a few really cute shots of them in the golf

One of my favorite moments of the day was
me and Adam driving in the golf cart with my
huge dress, and Lucas and his assistant driving in front of us, Lucas hanging off the back

doing the same thing in another golf cart,
Stephanie said. And we had a drone with
the videographer to take aerial footage. So
they have this drone camera circling the golf
course, and were on golf carts gallivanting
around, and people are finishing up golfing

It was just so much fun, and it was so silly,

A day of pure joy

{ Hilton Head Island Bluffton Beaufort South Carolina }

By Cate Fitzpatrick

cfitzpatrick@islandpacket.com

hen Travis Folk picked up Sarah Burden for

dinner a few days after Christmas 2013, he
didnt know what to expect. The blind date had
been arranged by friends who, naturally, thought
they were perfect for each other.
And their friends were right.
Sarah and Travis knew right away that this date
was different. There was an unmistakable ease
to the evening and the conversation continued
comfortably through dinner.
We almost closed the restaurant, Sarah said.
The date was so easy and so fun. We laughed and
had a great time. We hit it off right from the start.
It was one of those dates that you knew was different than the rest, Travis said. Not to mention,
she was drop-dead gorgeous.

30

THE ENGAGEMENT

To hear Sarah tell the story, its easy to ask, how

did you not know?
Really, I had absolutely no idea he had everything planned like that. I kind of thought it was just
another day, she said.
Travis had the perfect ring, thanks to photos
sent by Sarahs sister-in-law. He had the perfect
place, Cockfield Plantation in Green Pond, just
outside of Beaufort, and had the caretaker hide
a cooler of champagne and chocolate behind the
tree near the dock. It was a location they both
loved, so Sarah would think nothing of it. He also
knew Sarah would want family close by to share
the news, so he planned a celebratory lunch that
afternoon when everyone would be in town. Travis
even arranged for her older brother to fly in from
St. Thomas.
I doubled down on the hope she would say yes.
I dont think I ever thought about her saying no,
he said.
But the one thing Travis didnt plan for was his
lack of words.
We took a walk down to the dock and we were
sitting there. I had my hand on the ring box in my
pocket. I had the whole afternoon planned out
family was coming later, Frogmore Stew was on
the menu except I didnt know how to ask the
question, he said.
The opportunity came a moment later. As the
two sat looking out over the creek, the conversation turned to a playful exchange of how much
do you love me? When Sarah jokingly posed the
question, Travis answered with a diamond ring.

THE PLANNING

Wedding planning began almost immediately

and the couple settled on an early spring wedding
on March 28, 2014.
When it came to a place, both were drawn to
separate locations for very personal reasons.

Sarah always dreamt of a wedding in Palmetto

Bluff and it was a place her mother lived and
worked. I think it is one of the most beautiful
places I have ever seen, she said. For Travis, his
ties were to Cockfield Plantation, where he grew
up and owned property.
The couple enlisted wedding planner Kelli Corn
of Kelli Corn Weddings & Events to bring their
visions to life.
Palmetto Bluff is very near and dear to Sarah
and Travis is very connected to Cockfield Plantation. We tried to figure out what made sense as far
as incorporating both locations and the planning
evolved from there, Kelli said.

In less than four months, what took shape was

a joyous celebration that spanned two days, two
locations and two very different styles.
The couple chose an intimate Friday night
wedding in Palmetto Bluff with roughly 80 of their
closest family and friends, and a Saturday barbecue and oyster roast at Cockfield Plantation with a
guest list of more than 250.
Instead of having an informal welcome dinner
event on Friday and the wedding on Saturday, we
reversed it. It was wonderful, Kelli said.
Kelli said Sarahs personality was a big factor in
how the events came together so quickly.
Sarahs not your typical bride. Shes very laid
back, very easy going, and she makes decisions
easily. She put her trust in us and let us make the
selections, Kelli said.

THE WEDDING

Looking back on their special day, Sarah and

Travis said they wouldnt change a thing. It was a
day filled with love and personal details.
I remember turning to proceed down the aisle
after we had just gotten married and I saw a chapel
filled with everyone we love. I dont think I could
have been any happier, Sarah said. It was a moment of complete joy that about sums up the entire
celebration.
Sarah wore the first dress she tried on, a romantic, strapless gown by designer Sareh Nouri with
Chantilly lace and a sweetheart neckline.

The florist for the wedding was Sarahs mother,

Sue Burden. For Sue, putting together the flowers
was a requirement for peace of mind.
I wanted to love everything about that day and in
order for me to do that, I had to do the flowers myself. I had to know they would be perfect, she said.
Sue has created arrangements for more than 200
Palmetto Bluff weddings and knows what works.
Palmetto Bluff is so beautiful you dont need
to do much, she said. Sue chose a color scheme
of green and white, what she calls traditional
Palmetto Bluff colors.
Sarahs bouquet was a selection of white peonies,
white David Austin garden roses and white hellebores, all wrapped in ivory satin ribbon. The
bridesmaids carried smaller versions of Sarahs
bouquet. For the men, the boutonnieres were
simple white freesia.
In the chapel, a garland of salal and ruskus
framed the arched window while glass vases filled
with Casablanca lilies and snapdragons hung from
the pews. Sarah walked down an aisle sprinkled
with white rose petals.
At the reception, centerpieces were lower arrangements that mirrored the flowers in Sarahs
bouquet plus green hydrangeas, white anemones,
white lilies, white Amelia roses, white freesia,
white snapdragons, white and green parrot tulips
and white astrancia. White orchids, one of Travis
favorite flowers, were displayed throughout the
ballroom. Sarah also wore a white orchid in her
hair.
Savannah wedding photographer Donna Von
Breuning was entrusted to capture the emotions of
that special day. For the bride and groom, it was the
people and the relationships that were important
to catch on film, she said. The couple chose to have
a first look and to take their bridal portraits prior
to the ceremony to ensure they could spend the
most time with guests.

Taking our photos beforehand was great advice,

Travis said. After the ceremony, we had a cocktail
hour by the river with wine supplied from our
friends winery in Napa Valley and we really wanted
to enjoy that time with friends and family.
Donna also orchestrated a group photo on
the steps of the waterside chapel following the
ceremony.
We were able to get everyone on the steps in
a bleacher-style effect and I took the photo from
across the street. It worked out wonderfully, she
said.
Travis said that photo holds a special place in
both their hearts.
Its such a special photo because you can see
everyone who was there, all of our family. It will be
on the wall forever, he said.
Dinner and dancing followed at The Inn. On the
veranda, guests enjoyed a salad of garden greens,
spiced pecans, strawberries, shaved manchego,
pickled red onion and balsamic vinaigrette followed
by an entre of grilled local grouper, Carolina gold
dirty rice and charred okra. Dessert was wedding
cake with hand-carved white chocolate magnolias
created by a chocolatier friend from Charleston.
To add to the days festivities, Sarahs father
surprised the couple with fireworks over the
river. When the fireworks finale was finished, the
wedding band kicked it into high gear and guests
danced the night away.

THE PLANTATION CELEBRATION

The Saturday plantation celebration was laid

back and relaxing. Wooden signs directed guests
up an oak-lined dirt path to the outdoor event.
Along the way, guests passed hanging antique windows that displayed poster-size wedding pictures
from the day before.
We created sort of a walking wedding album so
friends could share in the special moments from

the wedding, Kelli said. The pictures included

Sarah and Travis leaving the chapel, enjoying the
reception in addition to other portraits of the
happy couple.
We had no idea Kelli and Donna were planning
this surprise. It was so cool to walk through the
trees and re-live the events, Sarah said.
The path lead guests to a renovated rice barn
with tents spread out across old rice fields.
A roasted pig took center stage and guests
enjoyed roasted oysters, collard greens, mac and
cheese, corn bread, banana pudding, and chocolates supplied by the same friend who made the
couples wedding cake.
And while the weather threatened to downpour
in the hours leading up to the event, Kelli said the
day couldnt have turned out more beautiful.
It was probably raining on either side of us
but, by the grace of God, not a drop fell during the
celebration. I think it was a case of good karma
because Sarah and Travis are such wonderful
people, she said.
Sarah and Travis sing the praises of all their vendors,
which included Kelli Corn Wedding & Events (planner), EventHaus, Charleston, (rentals); Resource One,
California (linens); East Coast Pyrotechnics (wedding
fireworks); Donna Von Bruening, Savannah, Ga.
(photographer); Sue Burden, Bluffton (florist); Alyssa Jae

Look gorgeous on your wedding day

By Cate Fitzpatrick

cfitzpatrick@islandpacket.com

edding-day beauty shouldnt begin on

the day-of while youre sitting in the
stylists chair. Start now to ensure you look your
bridal best.

SPARKLING SKIN

By now you have probably spent a considerable

amount of time thinking about your gown, your
shoes and your jewelry. But have you thought
about your skin?
Beautiful skin and makeup can be your best
accessory, said Jessica Shefsick, makeup artist
and owner of Skinzin in Bluffton. She recommends starting on a professional skin care routine suited for your skin type about six months
before your wedding.
The routine should include daily cleansing,
toning, serum and moisturizing, and weekly
exfoliating. If you have specific skin concerns,
such as acne, start those treatments two to four
months prior, Shefsick said. The week before
your wedding the focus should be on hydrating.
Be sure to either schedule a facial or take time
to give yourself a home facial that is exfoliating
and extra hydrating, she said.
Hydrate the rest of your body, too. In the days
leading up to your wedding remember to get
plenty of sleep and Shefsick recommends brides
drink about half their body weight in ounces of
water to keep skin fresh and glowing. A diet high
in Omega 3, antioxidants and green tea will also
help, she said.

FABULOUS HAIR

LUSCIOUS LASHES

Since all eyes will be on you on your wedding

day, why not make your eyes the star of the show?
Imagine waking up and always having that
put-together look. Thats exactly what eyelash extensions do, said Alexis Sargo, manager of FACES
Lash Studio on Hilton Head Island. The synthetic
black lashes add thickness and length and give
the mascara look without the frustrations of
clumping, smudging or streaking. The lashes
photograph really well and hold up to tears and
sweat, which is perfect for brides getting married
in this area.
The extensions are semi-permanent and applied to each real lash, meaning they will come
out when your natural lash falls out. Typically
a person goes through a complete lash cycle
every five to six weeks, Sargo said. Brides can
choose from looks ranging from conservative to
dramatic (with names like Coy, Captivating and
Catwalk) depending on the amount of natural
lashes she has.
We typically start modest the first time because the look can be a little shocking at first. The
lashes are black and have a curl to them, so they
really open the eye, Sargo said.
Maintenance in the first 48 hours is strict.
No getting the lashes wet, no excessive sweating, no steam showers and no tanning beds,
Sargo said.
After that, the routine returns to normal and
the lashes will hold up to most daily activities.
Just remember that anything around the lashes
needs to be oil-free or it will break down the
adhesive, she said.
For people with sensitive skin, fear not. Sargo
said most people dont have an allergic reaction.
The synthetic lashes attach directly to your
natural lash so nothing touches the skin, she
said.

Great bridal locks require a little love. Washing,

blow-drying and heat-styling can make for a head
full of split ends. Start repairing from the inside
out with foods such as fish, nuts and eggs.
When it comes to selecting a hairstyle, remember that the Lowcountry has a climate all its own.
During the summer months and even into the
fall, its hot and humid. This weather provides
unique challenges when styling hair, so plan
ahead in case extra treatments are required.
If a bride has very curly hair and theyre
planning a summer wedding and want a very
polished look, often times well recommend a
keratin treatment beforehand, said Jamee Reed,
stylist and owner of Taras at Moss Creek in Bluffton. The treatment removes 100 percent of the
frizz and 90 percent of the curl so the bride can
have the straight-hair look they want.
In the Lowcountry, Grecian style dos are popular, as are the inclusion of braids and the beach
wave, where the brides hair is styled loosely and
pulled to the side with a big flower, Reed said.
To ensure you have a beautiful hairstyle on
your wedding day, Reeds requirements are
simple:
Come in with day-old dirty hair. It holds the
curl much better, she said.

Destination:Lowcountry
By Cate Fitzpatrick

cfitzpatrick@islandpacket.com

eddings in the Lowcountry are different.

Theyre elegant and classy, but more
Southern and laid back. When planning your
destination wedding, there are things that are
nice to know, like when check-in time is so you
can avoid traffic. Then, there are things you
need to know advice so essential that any
bride whos lucky enough to hear it thinks, Im
so glad someone told me that! For example,
that very few guests tend to turn down an opportunity to take a trip to the beach.
Brides think theres a large percentage of
guests that wont come to a destination wedding, said wedding planner Leah McCarthy,
owner of Weddings with Leah in Bluffton.
Because the Lowcountry is such a great area,
people typically make it part of their vacation.
So before sending out those invitations welcoming guests for a wedding weekend on the
beach, consider these pointers for planning
the perfect Lowcountry destination wedding.

PICK YOUR SPOT

STICK TO A BUDGET

If done right, a destination wedding can

cost about the same or sometimes less
than hosting a party at home. Granted its
your wedding day and youve chosen a dreamy
location, so it might be OK splurge a little, but
you should never be uncomfortable with your
spending, said events planner Kelli Corn of
Kelli Corn Weddings & Events.
Look at your overall budget and focus on
the elements that are important to you, she
said. Is it how the event looks? Is it the meal
with family and friends? Or do you envision
a big party at the end of the night? Decide the
must-have elements and build your wedding
from there.
Then allocate your money accordingly so you
have a complete party.
Wherever your location, whatever our
budget, you want to make it a complete party.

If you dont really care what kind of food your

having, but youre having a band and a bar, its
not OK to just serve people appetizers, Corn
said. You have to take the entire evening into
account. If youre not serving dinner, Corn
suggests opting for a later ceremony and then
offering a dessert bar or heavy sliders.

OPT FOR ALL-IN-ONE

If the thought of juggling multiple venues

and vendors from afar gives you cold feet,
consider an all-in-one venue. Elegant Events
in Beaufort is one company that offers on-site
locations for the ceremony and reception in
addition to wedding planning services for any
budget.
We are a one-stop-shop for wedding planning, which is a benefit for out-of-town brides,
said owner Dan Brock. A bride can have her
entire wedding planned with one phone call.
We can take care of the venue, the dinnerware,
the decorating, the linens, the chairs, the flowers. The planning process is included in the
venue.
With help from experienced designer Kitty
Harris, Elegant Events specializes in stressfree, one-of-a-kind weddings. The venue can
host ceremonies for upwards of 200 people
either inside or outside on the lawn, in addition to providing all the rental supplies for the
event. The company also offers an in-house DJ,
in-house draping, lighting and flower services.
The only thing the couple needs to choose is
caterer, alcohol service and a photographer,

35

The location of your wedding determines not

only the mood (rustic, sophisticated, beachy),
but also the travel, time and budget required to
pull it off.
McCarthy recommends couples focus on
finding a venue before they pick any other
wedding elements. If youre not using a wedding planner, make use of wedding websites,
many of which offer questions that can help
with selecting a location and vendors.
If youre considering multiple locations,

McCarthy reminds brides that the more people

and places involved, the greater the chance
for more to happen traffic can cause delays,
vendors can get lost.
If you dont have an all-inclusive package
at a particular venue, it means theres more to
manage, she said.
McCarthy said its also important to make
sure you know whats included at a certain
venue and what theyre responsible for on the
big day and plan accordingly. Typically venues
are there to manage just that, the location, not
tie bows or put out centerpieces, she said.

{ Hilton Head Island Bluffton Beaufort South Carolina }

Brock said.
We make the process easy to do from a
distance and we eliminate the need for a lot
of phone calls and different site visits, Brock
said. Well take care of everything so the bride
can stay on Cloud 9 as long as possible.

GET HELP

If youre hosting a wedding in a distant

locale, you will need to entrust at least part of
the planning to someone elses capable hands.
A wedding planner can shoulder the task of researching and securing local vendors, dealing
with logistics like tent rentals and lighting, and
handling any last-minute fires that may start in
the weeks leading up to the wedding.
If youre going it alone, consider hiring a
day-of professional who has troubleshooting
experience and who can help make sure the
details are covered, McCarthy said.
And in the interest of staying sane, its a good
idea to delegate someone outside the family,
such as the maid of honor, who can answer
questions about the wedding.
Give your maid of honor all the information
ahead of time and let her field questions from
guests, as much as she can without overwhelming the bride, McCarthy said.

BEAUTY AND THE BEACH

Sunny and beautiful, the Lowcountry is

home to long stretches of sandy beaches.

Hilton Head Island is situated on 12 miles of
coastline and its easy to fall in love with the
idea of saying I do to a soundtrack of soft
waves, shorebirds and a beautiful sunset. But
dont be fooled, a beach wedding takes proper
planning.
For starters, check the tide chart before
picking a ceremony time, and dont forget your
permit. Wedding ceremonies performed on
the beach require a permit from The Town of
Hilton Head Island. All requests must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the ceremony
and should include information such as date
and start time, guest count, length of the ceremony and ceremony location.
McCarthy also suggests keeping in mind older
guests and guests with special needs when
choosing a beach-front location that might require a longer walk. She recalls working a wedding where they needed to bring in wheelchairs
at the last minute to transport older guests
down a long path to the ceremony site.
Also consider local noise ordinances and the
areas lights out regulation during sea turtle
season. From May 1 through Oct. 31, a Beaufort
County ordinance prohibits artificial lights
along any county oceanfront from 10 p.m. until
dawn. Artificial lights can discourage the loggerhead sea turtles from leaving the ocean to

How to obtain a marriage license in Beaufort County (bring cash)

Marriage licenses must be applied for at the
Beaufort County Probate Court. Heres what you
need to know:
n The price for a marriage license is $50 if both
parties are Beaufort County residents, $75 if at
least one person is a resident of South Carolina,
and $95 if neither party is a South Carolina
resident; payment must be made in exact cash.
Active-duty military personnel are deemed to
live in the county and state where the installation
to which they are assigned is located.
n Each party must be at least 18 to marry without parental consent and at least 16 with parental
consent. The state of South Carolina does not
require blood tests or physicals.
n Ceremonies may be performed by a Notary
Public or a minister; South Carolina has no
Justices of the Peace. Witnesses are not required
and the marriage license must be delivered to the
officiant before the ceremony is performed.
n Both parties are required to be present to apply for a marriage license. An application cannot
be taken by one party or by proxy. Applications
must be applied for in person and are not accepted by mail, phone, fax or email.
n An original certified copy of a birth certificate or a hospital or baptismal certificate (issued
and dated within one year after birth) is required
for proof of age for applicants under the age of 18.

Applicants age 18 or older may show a government-issued photo ID with date of birth such as
a valid drivers license, state ID card, military ID,
passport or visa. Applicants are required to provide their Social Security numbers or identification numbers.
n There is a 24-hour waiting period from the
time of the application until the license is issued.
However, the marriage license has no expiration
date; therefore it can be obtained months before
the wedding.
n Wedding ceremonies on the beach require
a Town of Hilton Head Island beach permit.
Permit requests are only accepted electronically
and must be submitted at least 30 days prior to
the wedding. To submit a request, go to www.
hiltonheadislandsc.gov. For more information,
call 843-342-4580.
n The main office of the Beaufort County
Probate Court is located at County Government
Center, 102 Ribaut Road, Beaufort, 843-255-2850.
Marriage licenses are accepted from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Monday through Friday. No appointment
necessary. The Hilton Head Island Satellite Office
is located at the County Government Center
South, 539 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head,
843-255-2866. The office is open from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Marriage licenses accepted by appointment only.

lay eggs or disorient adults and hatchlings.

Brides think they can extend the noise curfew or get around the rules. But that can lead to
fines, McCarthy said.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR GUESTS

Navigating a new place can be tricky. If parking will be an issue at your venue or if you dont
want guests getting lost, consider arranging
transportation, such as trolleys, shuttles or a
bus service, to take guests between locations.
In addition to arranging group rates for hotel
rooms and delivering welcome bags with the
essentials (suntan lotion, treats, bug spray), its
also helpful to include maps of the area an itinerary for planned events such as a welcome
party, rehearsal dinner and send-off brunch.
An itinerary with events and times is helpful
because not all guests remember to bring the
invitation with all the information, McCarthy
said.
If the bride and groom have been here before, consider including a list of favorite places
to eat and favorite things to do.
There should be some structure for guests,
but give them the flexibility to explore the
area, McCarthy said.

A: People rave about my crab cakes; they say theyre

The seasoning is perfect and the accompanying remoulade sauce is divine. Other regional Southern favorites
include shrimp and grits with andouille sausage and a

A: I know couples who dont care about the cake and

what I tell clients is that guests might forget about your
