WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

INTELLIGENCE FOR THE WINE CONSUMER

BY LEN NAPOLITANO

Is there an easy way to navigate a wine list?

Finding a wine that fits your needs for dinner is easy when you
have a foundation of wine knowledge, including familiarity with
grape varieties and awareness of the three most common list formats,
described below.
A progressive wine list categorizes the restaurants wines according
to style and arranges them starting with the lightest, most delicate
white wines, typically sparkling wines, and finishing with full-bodied,
intense red wines like Zinfandels, Syrahs, Petite Sirahs and blends of
these grapes. This is the easiest type of wine list to navigate if you are
still early in your journey to wine savvy. You simply choose a wine
either based on your mood, personal preference, or style that best
matches the intensity of flavor of the food that will pair with the wine.
A geographic wine list breaks down wines by country or wine
growing region. Most geographic wine lists are geographicprogressive, categorizing wines first by country and appellation,
and then further sorting wines progressively, from light-body to
full-body. It helps to be familiar with the styles of wine and the
popular grapes from each region to be able to make an optimal

choice of wine for your meal.

A varietal wine list breaks down wines by grape variety, listing
them in progressive order of style, from light white wine to heavy red
wine. This is popular among restaurants with wine lists entirely
comprised of American-made wines. If imported wines are offered, a
separate grouping on the list displays those wines. To best navigate a
varietal wine list, become familiar with the true varietal character of
each grape so you know what to expect in terms of fruit flavor and
mouthfeel. It also helps if you know a little about wine appellations
that are widely acknowledged to produce great wines of a certain
style.

TASTING ROOM OF THE WEEK:

WILD HORSE
WINERY & VINEYARDS
Visit for a Taste of the Unbridled Collection
BY CATHY NEUSHUL

WILD HORSE WINERY & VINEYARDS

Open daily 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
1437 Wild Horse Winery Court, Templeton, CA 93465
(805) 788-6300 | www.wildhorsewinery.com

Visitors of Wild Horse Winery say that there are a number of

reasons that their visit was particularly memorable. They talk about
the excellent Pinot Noirs, the winerys beautiful setting, and the
friendly and helpful staff. However, the tasting room offers other
enticements as well. Wine connoisseurs have the opportunity to taste
a variety of wines from the winerys reserve series, Unbridled, that
are not available in stores. These wines have received enthusiastic
positive reviews.
There is a good reason that these wines have been met with
acclaim. Wild Horse Winerys winemakers choose the grapes used to
produce this series with particular care. Following each harvest,
winemakers Chrissy Wittmann and Todd Ricard select the best
grapes from each vintage, and produce the reserve wines in small
lots of 300-400 cases.
Wittmann and Ricard choose from the harvest of vineyards
throughout the Central Coast. The Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are
made from grapes grown in Arroyo Grande, Santa Barbara County,
Edna Valley, Santa Maria Valley and other nearby wine growing
regions.
While the quality does not change from year to year, the
vineyards that supply the grapes to produce the wines do. The
winemakers choose which vineyards to use for the wines depending
on which grapes are showing best at the time. Once the grapes have
been selected, Wittmann and Ricard follow their time-tested
methods, which include aging for the Pinot Noirs. The Pinot Noirs
are placed in French oak barrels and aged for 14 months.
Some of the reserve Unbridled wines offered in the tasting room
at this time include varietals such as Syrah, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay and four different Pinot Noirs
from Arroyo Grande, Santa Barbara County, Edna Valley and Santa
Maria Valley.
Visitors, however, have a variety of other noteworthy wines to
choose from in the tasting room. These include two estate grown
wines; the Blaufrankisch features flavors of vanilla, nutmeg and
cherry, and the Verdelho features a citrus aroma with a bright, crisp
and balanced finish. There is also a terrific Malvasia Bianca, which
expresses aromas of Meyer lemon zest, citrus, and pineapple.

WINEMAKER PROFILE

CHRIS ROUGEOT
Opolo Vineyards
BY BETHANY RHINE

Winemaker, Chris Rougeot

Chris Rougeot is a winemaker among winemakers at Opolo

Vineyards. While Chris was originally brought into the Opolo family
to handle the day-to-day winemaking details for Founding Owners
and Winemakers Rick Quinn and Dave Nichols, it was soon evident
how much he was going to help Opolo continue to grow and
prosper. His winemaking vision merges seamlessly with Rick and
Daves because it is virtually the same vision to create good wines at
a reasonable price. And I mean really, really good wines that can be
enjoyed by all. Chris acknowledges that anything I need to make the
wine better, I can get. We dont stand in each others way. Its what
makes working with these guys so great.
Chris has a Microbiology Degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo
and upon graduation thought he would enter the science field, but as
it turned out it was not his calling to be stuck in a lab all day. Instead,
he was inspired by his desire to cook and create mouthwatering
dishes for friends and family to enjoy. And what goes well with
cooking? You guessed it, wine. Chris had found his niche.
Before joining the Opolo team, Chris gained valued experience at
EOS Estate Winery and Four Vines Winery. At EOS he learned the
nuts and bolts of the winery, how it runs, how to manage crews and
was introduced to a wide range of varietals. His time at Four Vines as
the Associate Winemaker taught him how to focus on the quality
aspects of great wine. He also learned a whole lot about Zinfandel,
which Chris addresses as his first love.
Chris believes the true art of winemaking is know[ing] when to
throw out the rules. What happens when something doesnt go as
planned? What are you going to do to make the wine still come out
correct? Sometimes you have to stray from the norm, and many
people are afraid to do this, but Chris is not. All you have to do is
taste the wine to see that his risks have paid off.
As mentioned above, Zinfandel is Chriss first love so it is no
surprise that Opolos Reserve Zinfandel is his favorite Opolo wine. I
have so many Zinfandel lots to choose from when making this
Reserve Zinfandel; so much to work with; and its so much fun. This
wine really is great to make and I can always ensure its of the highest
quality. Chris recommends pairing this bold, fruit-forward wine with
braised short ribs or beef bourguignon.
When asked, If you werent making wine every day, what do you
think youd be doing? Chris responded, It may sound clich, but
making beer. Chris currently does some home brewing as a hobby.
Visit Opolo Vineyards, open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,
located at 7110 Vineyard Drive in Paso Robles. For more
information, please call (805) 238-9593 or go to. www.opolo.com.

Chris and his wife, Anne.

TASTING ROOM OF THE WEEK:

DONATI FAMILY VINEYARD

BY BETHANY RHINE

In 2007, the Donati Family embarked on a journey to make

their Paicines appellation wines available to tasting enthusiasts
of the Central Coast. They purchased a beautiful property on the
corner of Highway 46 West and Vineyard Drive in the hills of
Templeton and with an extraordinary vision created a warm and
welcoming tasting room to complement their award-winning
wine portfolio of Bordeaux-focused varieties.
Winemaker Denise Valoffs passion for her craft paired with
Owner Ron Donatis philosophy to create a quality product
attainable by all consumers has made them the perfect pair for
Donati Family Vineyard. These two leaders have created a team
that is family, some by blood and all by spirit, as they produce
quality wine within an environment that is hard working yet
delightfully enthusiastic.
Join the Donati family at their tasting room where you will
not only experience exceptional wine, but learn of a familys
history dating back to 1907 that has created this fine winery full
of joy, inspired laughter and good cheer.

Wines to Experience
While the gracious and hospitable tasting room staff will
create the perfect tasting experience to fit your preferences, here
are some noteworthy wines worth considering:
2012 The Immigrant is a blend of 86% Merlot, 12% Petit
Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Its dark, dense fruit is complexly
layered with hints of oak and spice ending with a nice long
finish. The label was inspired by a picture taken in 1917 of Ron
Donatis grandfather, Albino Donati. Taken 10 years after Albino
immigrated to the United States from Italy, the picture is a
statement that he had made it in America. Albinos dedication to
creating a better life for his family set the groundwork for the
winery we see today. His hard work and triumphs are truly
worth celebrating, admiring and honoring and that is what The
Immigrant wine does. View Albinos picture in the tasting room
along with a collection of portraits telling the familys celebrated
history.
2011 Ezio is a flagship Bordeaux Blend of 75% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 25% Merlot. This rich wine is named for Rons
father, the first born Donati in the United States.
2011 Claret is their most crowd pleasing red, a blend of 45%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 8% Malbec, 7% Cabernet
Franc. Enjoy with any meal.
2013 Sisters Forever UnOaked Chardonnay is their most
popular white, fermented in 100% stainless steel with bright
citrus aromas, a creamy mid-palate and crisp finish. A wine
specially created to be shared with a sister, family or friends.

A Customized Visit
How do you like to experience your wine? Arrangements can
be made for private tastings and tours including a visit to the
barrel room, cellar or production facility. Any size group is
welcome just remember to call ahead. Add a chocolate pairing
to the mix or indulge on delectable cheeses.
All tasting room guests are invited to use the outdoor picnic
grounds and Bocce courts at their convenience. Dont forget to
purchase your chocolate mustache on the way out and browse
the olive oils, vinegars, bruschetta, spreads, beef jerky and many
more appetizing selections.

Alta Maria is a small, artisan winery focusing on producing estate

grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the cold and oceanic Santa
Maria Valley appellation in Santa Barbara County.
Founded by 9th Generation Californian James Ontiveros, and
celebrated winemaker Paul Wilkins, Alta Marias wines are honest,
authentic and inspired by the old world regions of France. They are
classic examples of purity, balance and complexity. Alta Maria Vineyards
strives to make the best wines possible in a very conscientious manner
and employs organic and sustainable practices, leaving no indelible mark
on the people and places around us. Much like James long family history
in California, Alta Maria reflects not only traditional ideals of quality and
value, but also the pioneering spirit and heritage of the early days of
California.
The oldest profession in California is not what you thinkits most
probably cattle ranching, and the partners of Alta Maria Vineyards, Paul
Wilkins and James Ontiveros, have a long history in the ranches and
farmlands of this part of California.
The Ontiveros family first came into California in 1781 with the
Rivera expedition finally settling in Santa Maria Valley on the Rancho
Tepusquet Land Grant of 1837.
Today, much of the duos grapes come from this very same land. As a
couple of kids in college, both studying crop and fruit science at Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo, they bonded over an unlikely interest in wine. Pauls

family background in farming and James history of cattle ranching

put them firmly in position to build on their knowledge of the land
and agriculture.
For both men, wine grew into obsession and obsession became a
career: James as a viticulturist and Paul as a winemaker. Working
hard and making sacrifices was not new to them either, and they both
became veterans in their fields, even at a young age. Finally they
moved away, lost touch, and many years passed.
But the land in the Santa Maria Valley had a pull on the two men;
the sense of heritage and nostalgia drew them back together. As the
two friends reconnected, they decided to make the wine that was
waiting for them all along: Alta Maria Vineyards.
The artwork for Alta Maria Vineyards features hand-hewn iron
nails used by homesteaders in Santa Maria before the Industrial
Revolution introduced mass-produced, machine-cut nails. Despite its
lowly function, each nail is unique from the next according, to the
conditions in which it was made and the expertise of the craftsman.
This craftsmanship is what Paul and James strive for in all their
wines.
All Alta Maria wines can be tasted at their tasting room located on
Grand Avenue in Los Olivos. Though Paul and James have been
making and distributing wine for years, they didnt open a tasting
room until late 2011, with some fresh offerings on the current tasting
list. Its open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located at
2933 Grand Avenue in Los Olivos. For more information call

EOS WINERY
BY BETHANY RHINE

Open daily 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

2300 Airport Road, Paso Robles
(805) 591-8050 | www.eosvintage.com
Eos is a proud member of
The Wineries of Highway 46 East, a coalition of wineries and
hospitality partners along the eastern Paso Robles corridor.

18

Opened in the mid-1980s and acquired by Proprietor Bill Foley in 2010, Eos has been
building a stunning reputation for its complex whites, bold reds and succulent dessert
wines that are fruit forward, balanced and both readily delicious and approachable.
Eos is named for the Greek goddess of dawn. The myth concludes with Aphrodite
cursing Eos for having an affair with Ares and her punishment was an insatiable appetite
for young men. At the winery, Eos has an insatiable appetite for great wines, but unlike
the myth, one can hardly call this passion a punishment.
The Eos Winery Hospitality Center is conveniently located right off Highway 46 East
and Airport Road and is appreciated for its accessibility, expansive tasting room and
charming gift shop of unique gifts and scrumptious snacks. The casual yet educational
environment coupled with picturesque views of the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards
and rolling hillside makes Eos one of the most enjoyable stops for wine lovers in Paso
Robles.
Eos provides several tasting options to meet the needs and desires of all guests. The
first two options include a tasting experience of six EOS wines guided by our tasting
attendants. They will describe each wine as it is poured to help identify the components
or aroma, flavor and unique personality of each wine. The Public Tasting is experienced at
the tasting bar for $5 and the Private Tasting moves guests to either the barrel or banquet
room for a more intimate experience and includes a keepsake logo wine glass all for $10.
A new enhanced experience perfect for special events or meetings at Eos features a
Private Seated Tasting and Lunch as well as a Private Seated Tasting and Buffet-style
Lunch. The first opportunity includes the private tasting of six Eos wines, a dedicated
tasting attendant and lunch provided by Steins Catering. Guests may select one of Steins
delicious sandwiches served with salad, fresh fruit, an Eos wine-infused brownie and a
keepsake logo wine glass for $25. The latter of the two lunch tasting options includes all
of the above, but instead of the choice of sandwiches, there is a buffet-style lunch by
Steins Catering for $32. Advance reservations are required for each of these lunch
options.
Eos is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located at 2300 Airport Road,
Paso Robles. For more information please call (805) 591-8050 or visit their website at

WINEMAKER PROFILE

MICHAEL GILL
Michael Gill Cellars
BY BETHANY RHINE

What do hunting, dentistry and winemaking have in common? All three are mastered by the
esteemed Michael Gill. Winemaking is the latest of his endeavors and he is wowing enthusiasts and
critics alike with his finely-crafted Rhone varietals.
Michael Gill acquired his stunning Westside Paso Robles property in 1977. At that point he was
advised not to plant grapes because of the potential for frost damage, but in 1998 Michael decided
to plant the grapes anyways and wouldnt you know it, he has never had an issue with frost. From
day one, Michael says, Everything went very well. We received welcomed help from neighbor
Robert Nadeau and it all went smoothly. Syrah was the grape of choice at the time and remains the
backbone of the winery today; however, it took Michael ten years to decide to become the
winemaker himself, up until then he simply sold the juice.
What directs Michaels winemaking process? Nature. All farming is dry farming not a drop of
irrigation is used. Fruit quality is then the primary concern. Where the industry norm sources fruit
at four to six tons per acre, Michael only uses one to one and a half tons per acre. This is intentional
as Michael only wants the best for his limited production, well-crafted wines.
As a dentist, Michael knows precision. He also understands that there is an art to the execution
of this exact training. Michael has taken these procedures and carried them into his winemaking
process. He carefully tends each vine himself with strict care and blends his wine with the same
focus.
If you would like to observe Michaels hunting side, visit the tasting room. Its like walking into a
museum of natural history where you can enjoy his displayed trophies including a polar bear, two
elk and a wolf. Michael runs the tasting room with his wife, Shelley. Its just the two of them. We
want to stay small. We own the winery, the winery doesnt own us.
Michaels greatest challenge as a winemaker is taking on the endeavor of working the slope of
his vineyard every season. And its a very steep slope. As it turns out the steeper the slope, the better

Michaels greatest reward to-date
is receiving 24 awards for his wines
between June 2013 and June 2014.
Awards came from competitions
spanning San Diego, Orange

San Francisco, Sonoma, Pacific Rim
and Denver. Michael specifically

which has been collecting awards
since fall 2013 with a Chairmans
Award, Gold Medal from Orange
County and a Double Gold and
Best of Show from Denver.
When asked about his favorite
wine, Michael couldnt answer with
just one. He loves that Syrah is the
winerys mainstay, but then he loves
that he has branched out into
unusual Rhone varietals. The
Counoise is delightful and the
Vermentino is exquisite.

Fun Fact
Michael gained an appreciation
for wine via his lab partner in
dental school whose parents were
photographers focused on French
Wine in North America.
Not to get ahead of themselves,
but Michael and Shelley are highly
anticipating grand recognition from
the 2014 vintage and they invite
you to experience their current
selection for yourself by visiting the
tasting room at Michael Gill Cellars,
located at 4125 Peachy Canyon
Road in Paso Robles.
Michael Gill Cellars is open
Friday through Sunday from
11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and by

Mamas Meatball
By asking locals, one can find out just how good the food at a
local restaurant is. Ask somebody in the restaurant businessa
bartender, a waiter, even a bus boywhat they think of Mamas
Meatball in San Luis Obispo and their eyes roll towards the
heavens as they breathe a deep sigh; that is how good Mamas
Meatball is.
Set in a small courtyard off of one of the towns main streets in
a place called the Old Creamery, Mamas Meatball is actually
divided in two. On the right is the takeout where people line
up to get their orders of meatballs and more. To the left, fronted
by a huge-trunked tree and a water fountain, is the intimate
restaurant with its mural of the Mediterranean across the back.
Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef Nicola
Allegretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian dishesmany
of them now available in smaller sizes as well, a bow to the
economy and his customers wishes. Among them are half a dozen
soups, a long list of salads (including grilled salmon and a
refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful antipasto
choices, both hot and cold paninis (including, of course, one
made with meatballs) and more pasta dishes than there is space
here to share (though the Ravioli di Pollo all Vodkahomemade
ravioli filled with chicken and served in a vodka saucecannot
go unmentioned).
There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well
as any number of traditional and specialty pizzas, now available in
two sizes, and some far too-tempting desserts.
For a visit to the most authentic fine Italian restaurant in town,
head to Mamas Meatball, located in the Old Creamery plaza at
570 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo. They are open Tuesday
through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. For takeout
orders or more information, visit their website at
www.mamasmeatball.com. Dont forgot, they also deliver and
have very popular catering serviceswhich work with groups,
including weddingsof every type and size. For catering
information call (805) 704-3744.

Wine Tasting in

ts no wonder the people here

call it SLO. No one is in any hurry
in the cafs or on the sidewalks, and
certainly no one is in any rush to
leave. Strangers are genuinely
friendly, always ready to talk about
their favorite hiking trail or
barbecue joint, or to point the way
to the winery with the best Pinot
Noir. Its all part of the SLO life, that
combination of good stuff that
makes visiting here so nourishing to
the soul.

San Luis Obispos unusual natural

beauty, along with its gentle climate,

first attracted the Spanish padres to
the area in the 1700s. In 1772 they
built the fifth of Californias 21
missions here, on the banks of San
Luis Creek, and named it Mission
San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today,
many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions.

More than 200 wineries produce

critically acclaimed vintages in
Paso Robles, Edna Valley and
Arroyo Grande Valley. Visitors can
head out along the gorgeous
country roads to sip their way
through the vineyards.

is the perfect setting to experience the moment, with extraordinary wines, warm hospitality and

resulting in balanced wines with fruit maturity, bright acidity and an amazing flavor profile that reflects
the regions terroir. Specializing in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the tasting room offers a selection of

flavor profile. Visitors can experience several tasting options: the $10 flight includes classic wines in

WINEMAKER PROFILE

MICHAEL BARETTO
Le Vigne Winery
BY BETHANY RHINE

The story of how Winemaker Michael Barreto came to his position

at Le Vigne Winery is one of zest and inspiration. Like many
winemakers, Michael began his venture at home, wanting to see the
winemaking process unfold from start to finish. His first barrel of
homemade wine was produced in 1999 and he was hooked. He
secured his first job in the industry in 2001 and he and his wife, Joey,
moved to Californias Central Coast; there, he began his employment
at Courtside Cellars located in San Miguel. His new career started in
the cellar, but quickly progressed into the laboratory by the middle of
harvest.
In 2003, Michael was offered the opportunity to work at Le Vigne
Winery. He is credited with elevating the quality and reputation of
the wines over the years and is honored to be a part of the Le Vigne
family. Michael considers 2009 a turning year for the Le Vigne
label as it was designed to return to the land, highlighting the
production of high-end, quality wines that literally speak to the
vineyards.
Michael has a true palate for the art of winemaking and enjoys
taking on special projects that take wines to the next level. One of his
favorite projects is what he calls AmeRhone. His unique process
here is designed to preserve the concentrated flavors from the time
the grapes are picked, solidifying and intensifying the tastes through
tactics such as increased skin contact before pressing. To experience
this soft red-violet treasure, visit the tasting room or join the Le Vigne
Wine Club.
Michaels success as a winemaker is partially attributed to his
strong background in Agricultural Business including produce sales,
farming analysis and accounting; this prepared him with a wellrounded view of business that complements his winemaking skills.

28

JANUARY 2015

His success can also be attributed to his awe inspiring attitude

towards being a winemaker. He explains that: There are many facets
to being a winemaker and choosing a favorite part is nearly
impossible because my favorite part encompasses every aspect. From
walking the vineyard to interacting with customers in the tasting
room, each piece has its place and enjoyment. Even harvest with its
hectic environment is joyful. Once you get over the stress, its fun.
There is a real feeling you get when you see the end result from hard
work and a nurturing nature.
Michael also enjoys extending custom crush opportunities to a
handful of winemakers. I enjoy doing this because I get exposed to
styles and techniques that differ from my own. I get to see how fruit
from different regions performs, and ultimately, its always what they
want versus what I want, which encourages me to expand my
knowledge and outlooks on wine.
Winemaker Michael Barreto invites you to the newly renovated
Le Vigne Winery Tasting Room, where a knowledgeable and
courteous staff will guide you through your choice of a
complimentary tasting flight of three wines, a $5 reserve flight, a $10
cheese pairing or a $10 chocolate pairing. The newly renovated
tasting room is designed for maxiumum comfort and elegance while
wine tasting. With a beautiful stone and wood tasting bar, and a
stunning chandelier hanging up above, the atmosphere has been
elevated to a whole new level of luxury. The onsite gift shop boasts
the most impressive international cheese selection on the entire
Central Coast, as well as a beautiful assortment of wine gifts and
accessories. Enjoy the amazing new cheese and charcuterie bar, make
a reservation for a gourmet food and wine pairing, or inquire about
the many wonderful tour and tasting options offered at the fablous
Le Vigne Winery.
Le Vigne Winery is located right off Highway 46 East at 5115
Buena Vista Drive, Paso Robles, California 93446. The Tasting Room
is open daily from Sunday - Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and
Friday - Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

GRAPELINE WINE TOURS

The Best Way to Tour Temecula, Paso Robles and Santa Barbrara in Style
BY CATHY NEUSHUL

Grapeline Tours offers the kind of wine tasting experience that is

both memorable and unique. At this time, tours are offered in
Temecula, Paso Robles and Santa Barbara, and provide a variety of
options. Visitors can sign up for the Vineyard Picnic Tour, available
361 days a year, offering an overview of the area wineries. They can
also choose to sign up for a specialty tour that caters to customers
particular interests.
The specialty tours combine a wine tasting experience with an
inside view of something unique to that particular area. John Kelliher,
co-owner of Grapeline Tours, said that one of the most popular tours
in the Santa Barbara area involves both wine tasting and visits to
animal farms. People taking the Animal Lovers Wine Tasting Tour
visit Seein Spots Farm where they meet Zeyore, a zebra/donkey
hybrid, tour an ostrich farm, stop by a miniature horse ranch and
much more.
Whether people choose to take a signature series tour, or sign up
for a general exploration of a particular area, however, the experience
will be distinctive. A tour through Temecula, Paso Robles or Santa
Barbara has its own flavor. He said that Temecula, for example, has a
lot of visitors coming from the Orange County and Los Angeles areas
for wine tasting. Kelliher described the wineries as vibrant, often
feature live music, and in some cases, even have a restaurant on site.
A Paso Robles wine tour, however, can provide a completely
different experience. The wineries are smaller, and visitors often have
an opportunity to meet and talk to the owner or winemaker. He said
that the person pouring the wine in the tasting room is often the
person who made the wine, and the owner of the winery. It is a lot
more intimate experience, he said. Paso Robles is more about the
people and the personalities.
Kelliher said that Santa Barbara wineries have something different

www.WineCountryThisMonth.com

to offer as well. He said that the Pinot Noirs produced in the area are
special, with an earthy, mushroom essence. I find them to be more
distinctive and interesting. Each one has its own story, he said.
Grapeline Tours plans to add Sonoma to its line up this spring.
Kelliher said that this addition will open up a wealth of wine tasting
opportunities. He said that the areas long history of winemaking,
starting in the 1800s, make it a wonderful place to explore. He said
that Sonoma wineries are home to many well-established wineries, as
well as small, boutique ones. Sonoma definitely has it all, he said.
People who sign up for Grapeline Tours have another option as
well. They can take a Signature Series Tour that includes a private
reserve tasting hosted by owners or winemakers.
Whatever tour you decide to take, however, the experience is
bound to be rewarding. Reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor
consistently give Grapeline Tours five stars for its service.
In the future, this experience might be available outside of
California. There are plans to extend services to Napa, Oregon,
Washington, Texas, Virginia, New Yorks Finger Lakes Wine Country
and other areas.
Kelliher said that Grapeline is committed to giving back to the
community it serves. Employees are encouraged to volunteer in their
communities, and Grapeline donates more than $20,000 worth of
services a year to support charitable organizations. In recognition of
these efforts, the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce named
Grapeline the Sterling Business of the Year in 2005, and co-owner
Kim Kelliher Temecula Valley Citizen of the Year in 2009.
For information, or to sign up for a tour, call 888-8-WINERY or
email tours@gogrape.com. You can also find out more about the
many tours available by visiting Grapelines website at
www.gogrape.com. Grapeline is also on Facebook, Twitter and
Google+.

VINO+THERAPY STUDIO
Sip & Soak in Paso Robles
BY MICHAEL CERVIN

For thousands of years people have happily consumed wine and

beer. But perhaps surprisingly for nearly as long, people have also
used wine and beer as therapy, not to drink, but to soak in. Though
the roots of these kinds of therapies can be traced to the Middle Ages,
and even back to Roman times, it is the Paso Robles wine region that
is now taking the lead. The Vino+Therapy Studio is the de facto place
to get your Champagne soak, beer facial and other unique
treatments.
Though there are spa treatments that incorporate
wine, Vino+Therapy Studio is the only place where
it is exclusively all about beer and wine. This is all
we offer, wine and beer is incorporated into every
treatment we have and there is nothing non-wine
related, says owner Nena Johansen. She grew up in
Templeton, moved to San Diego for college and
relocated back to the Central Coast, back to her
roots. Realizing there was a serious lack of wine
country spa treatments, Johansen opened Vino+Therapy Studio in

2010. In addition to treatments with wine and beer,

you also get to drink a glass of Paso Robles wine or
beer during your treatment.
The Central coast is such a destination location
and we have so much to offer, people want to go
wine tasting, but you can only do so much of that so
weve come up with other alternatives, Johansen
says. Their popular Girls Gone Wine packages are
for one to fifteen people. Getting away from the
kids and family is a great way to distress, Johansen
notes. Additionally if someone is allergic to hops for example, you
can do the wine treatments, and vice versa. So, sip a glass of wine or
beer while detoxing with a wine foot soak, perhaps a Champagne
sugar scrub foot treatment, a wine and cheese platter, and a 30minute wine massageall designed to make your visit as
intoxicating as possible.
Her Wellness Retreats add an adventurous side to your wine
tasting with one and two day excursions which can include kayaking
in Morro Bay, zip-lining over Pinot Noir vineyards, stand up paddle
board, perhaps a private wine tasting tour or a brewery tour and
tasting, dinner prepared by personal chef, yoga or guided mediation
set amongst a vineyard. The choices will make you swoon, as will the
spa treatments.

A Spirit and Passion for Winemaking

Bien Nacido Vineyard | Photograph by Jeremy Ball

Wine Tasting in

SANTA BARBARA

n the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, lies Santa Barbara Countys historic
wine growing region. The first vineyard production in these rolling coastal hills dates
back to 1782, when Junipero Serra planted vines on Mission land. About a hundred years later,
there was 260 acres of luscious vineyards and seventeen winemakers in Santa Barbara
County. Sadly, the Prohibition Era destroyed many of these historic vineyard sites and mostly
put an end to winemaking in the regionas was the case in many of the beautiful winegrowing regions across the state. With that being said, the spirit and passion for winemaking
never left Santa Barbara County, and this wine growing region is alive and well today. Talented
winemakers are producing outstanding and pure terroir driven wines from the five American
Viticultural Areas (AVAs), planted mostly to Burgundian, Rhne and Bordeaux grape varieties.
Although the movie Sideways is said to have put San Barbara Countys wine growing
region on the map in 2004, especially the Santa Maria Valley AVA, it is the high quality of the
wine across the county that has continued to uphold this bountiful regions reputation.
Sprawling vineyards and gently rolling hills create a picturesque scene for visitors and locals
alike, who visit the many wineries, tasting rooms and wine bars in the area. In the five AVAs,
wine tasters will find a nice range of wine styles amongst the Burgundian, Rhne and
Bordeaux varietals that are produced.
In the more northern region, cool climate Burgundian varietals reign, such as Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay, due to the maritime influence. This ensures a long temperate growing
season which the Burgundian varietals crave. With ample amount of sunlight, the grapes ripen
very slowlyperfect for producing terroir driven wines with pure varietal characteristics. In
the southern region, there is more of a diurnal shift with warmer nights and cooler days. This
area sees less fog and has different soil types than what is found closer to the coast. The
Bordeaux and Rhne varieties flourish in this warmer climate and the sandy soils with limestone and chalk impart a wonderfully desirable minerality in the wines.
The wineries in Santa Barbara County boast a concentration of incredibly passionate and
talented winemakers; join them year round at their many events, celebrations and festivals, as
well as in their tasting rooms.

A Walk Around Tasting is a

combination of a tour and a tasting.
Your host brings along several
bottles of wine on your tour, and
may take you to a garden area of
the winery to pour the first round.
Then you move to another place
within the winery to sample the
next wine. This experience
continues until all the wines are
tasted.

Barrel Tasting

www.WineCountryThisMonth.com

A Sit Down Tasting usually

requires an appointment, and there
may be a slightly higher fee than a
wine bar fee. Seated in an elegant
room, you are poured several wines
by your winery host. Expect your
host to describe the unique characteristics of each wine and how it
was made.

Walk Around Tasting

The most common tasting experience is a Wine Bar Tasting. You

step up to the bar where typically a
list of wines being poured is
displayed. Expect to pay a tasting
fee between $10-$40. Some tasting
bars will offer you the option to
taste a library or reserve wine.
Exercising this option increases the
fee, but will allow you to taste very
unique, old or rare wines.

Sit Down Tasting

Wine Bar Tasting

Another popular tasting experience that can be part of a tour or a

Walk Around is a Barrel Tasting.
Your guide takes a wine thief, a
special siphon placed into a hole in
the top of a barrel to extract tasting
samples of a maturing wine. The
sample allows you to taste what the
wine is like in the middle of developing its full potential.

Why make an appointment?

Some wineries are so small that
they need to know when you are
coming so someone will be there
to greet you. Others have sit-down
tastings that start and end at
specific times. Its always a good
idea to schedule your appointments well in advance.

LOMPOC WINERIES
Wine Tasting in

Zotovich Estate
Zotovich Estate Vineyard & Winery may be a small, family-run
entity, but its handcrafted wines produce big results. Wine critic
Stephen Tanzer gave Zotovichs 2011 Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and
Syrah a high rating each receiving 92 points.
The road to success wasnt easy, however. Steve Zotovich said that
he didnt walk into a ready-made and profitable vineyard. When he
first bought the vineyard in 2004, it needed a lot of work. The weeds
in the vineyard were taller than the vines, he said. He removed a
grove of Eucalyptus, and made many other improvements. We
started out grassroots to get to where we are today, Zotovich said.
He credits his nephew, winemaker Ryan Zotovich, with
emphasizing the production of serious wines. Ryan created a team
when he joined Zotovich in 2010 with a focus on experimenting and
producing distinctive wines. Stephen Tanzer ratings of Zotovich wines
show that others find their varietals noteworthy.
Zotovichs tasting room is distinctive as well. It is located directly
across from the Lompoc Wine Ghetto, in the Santa Rita Hills Wine
Center. While the word ghetto is usually associated with negative
connotations, wine connoisseurs know that this industrial section of
the city is a hidden gem. Visitors can try wines from a variety of
different vineyards without getting in their car.
In January, Zotovich Estate Vineyard & Winery is going to hold its
5th Annual Release Party. Zotovich said he is expecting about 200
people to attend the event. It is going to be held January 24th and
includes wine tasting, dinner and a chance to socialize with family
and friends. Contact Zotovich for more information.
The Zotovich tasting room is located at 300 North 12th Street,
Suite 1D, Lompoc. The tasting room is open Friday-Sunday from
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or by appointment. For more information,
call (805) 736-1600 or email Roxanne@zotovichcellars.com.

LaMontagne Winery
BY CATHY NEUSHUL

Kimberly Smith, owner of LaMontagne Winery, loves what she

does and it shows. In the past few years, she has made awardwinning Pinot Noirs with the goal of making each sip bring joy to
others.
Smith is the type of person who decides what she wants and
makes it happen. When she started to wonder what made the $50
bottles of Pinot Noirs that she loved so appealing, she didnt want to
rely on others to tell her, instead, she wanted to find out for herself.
She enrolled in college to learn more about winemaking. There, she
went to a presentation in which Wes Hagen, winemaker at Clos Pepe
Vineyard, spoke about his craft. Smith immediately asked him to give
her a hands-on education in winemaking, and the rest is history.
Her first vintage went into barrel in 2010. Her philosophy is that
wines should be allowed to develop at their own rates until they truly
sing. Smiths 2010 Pinot Noir won gold at the Pinot ShootOut, a
blind taste test of wines from all over the world. In addition to Pinot
Noirs, Smith produces a Pinot Blanc and a Tempranillo.
The fruit for Smiths wines come from the Santa Rita Hills and are
produced in small lots. Smith said the area is perfect for making the
types of wines she loves. The coastal fog and ocean breezes are a
perfect compliment to the soil, allowing Smith to produce the types
of wines she likes best.
Lucy LaMontagne was Kimberlys husbands grandmother. Their
family name, LaMontagne, means the mountain in French. She said
this name is an appropriate way to describe her wines. She wants to
create exceptional wines that represent the place the fruit was grown.
LaMontagne Winery is located at 1509 E. Chesnut Avenue in the
Lompoc Ghetto. The winery is open Friday through Sunday
11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Call (805) 291-6643 for a private tasting.

SANTA MARIA VALLEY

Welcome to

Costa de Oro Winery

Costa de Oro Tasting Room & Marketplace is located right off of

Highway 101 in Santa Maria. This site pays tribute to the history
behind Costa De Oro - it was the strawberry stand for Gold Coast
Farms, the parent company of Costa De Oro, which has been farming
Santa Maria since 1978. Gold Coast Vineyard was planted to 20
acres of Pinot Noir and 10 acres of Chardonnay in 1989, and these
grapes were sold to the areas best wineries including Au Bon
Climat. Gary Burk, Costa de Oro co-owner & winemaker, was
fortunate to work in the winery with Jim Clendenen, from 19942002, and during this time he began to make his own wine. Gary
started with just one barrel of Chardonnay and one barrel of Pinot.
Today, Costa de Oro produces over 6000 cases featuring Chardonnay
& Pinot Noir from the estate Gold Coast Vineyard. The best place
to experience the wines is at the Tasting Room and Marketplace,
where guests can taste five wines for only $10. In addition to regular
tasting room hours (normally 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily), each
Friday evening, Costa de Oro hosts Friday Night Wine Downs
featuring live music from local musicians and $12 dinner plates
prepared by Chef Rick! Another facet to the Costa de Oro portfolio is
their Wine on Tap. Kegged wine, wine stored and shipped inside

five gallon kegs instead of bottles, has been gaining popularity

throughout the past several years. Costa de Oro started kegging wine
for high-end accounts, like Roys Hawaii. Now these wines, a white
and a red are available in the tasting room by the glass and by the
growler (these can be refilled). Costa de Oro Wine Club members
receive discounts on keg wines, bottled wines and complimentary
tastings.

Casa Dumetz was established

in 2004 with a patch of raw
earth, a bucket of grapevines and
plenty of sweat from family and
friends who joined together to
make the improbable probable.
From these efforts emerged a love
story and a sincere commitment
to producing authentic wine.
We farm a small vineyard in
Malibu ourselves on which we
grow Pinot Noir. We source the
rest of our fruit from the unique
vineyards in the Santa Ynez
Valley. Our production is
composed of small handcrafted lots, so hurry, because what you may
love one month will most likely be gone the next!
In the Santa Ynez Valley, our primary focus is on Rhone varietals
Viognier, Syrah, Grenache, Roussanne, a Syrah Ros and a Sparkling
Syrah Ros , which we call Sonjas Suds. And as a welcome surprise
we have a dry Gewurztraminer from Rancho de Vina de Santa Ynez,
the oldest own-rooted Gewurztraminer planting in the county. The
rest of our varietals we source from various vineyards in the Santa
Ynez Valley, including Tierra Alta Vineyard, Larner Vineyard, and for
the 2013 harvest we have just added Thompson Vineyard for
Grenache.
Winemaking, once I discovered it, became the perfect fit for me.
By nature I have always been a curious cat. I simply cannot stop
asking questions in pursuit of answers and, by extension, the
authenticity they bring. As a journalist by training and now a
winemaker by passion, I am regularly inspired to never quit searching
for that moment the instant where it all makes sense. The two
professions also continue to challenge me whether through words or
wine, to craft timeless stories that are better when shared with others.
After all, a bottle of wine is a story of all the hands that have shaped
its progress and the final decisions made by one. As
owner/winemaker of Casa Dumetz Wines, my goal is to create
vibrant, balanced and approachable wines using the basic ingredients
of premium Santa Ynez Valley fruit and hard work.
Visit us in the historic town of Los Alamos. You wont be
disappointed. Casa Dumetz Wines are located at 388 Bell Street in
Los Alamos. They are open Thursday 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday

LOS OLIVOS
Wine Tasting in

Andrew Murray Vineyards

BY MICHAEL CERVIN

SAN MARCOS PASS RD

FIGUEROA MTN

I have a deep passion for Rhone varieties because of many visits to

that part of France, says Andrew Murray. It is Grenache, Syrah and
Mourvdre, as stand-alone wines or blends that has Murray so
infatuated. I loved them before many U.S. wine consumers and
winemakers had ever heard of them, he says. When we started our
limited focus on all things Rhone, it had nothing to do with marketing
opportunities or creating a niche, boutique brand, he says. The man
simply loves these wines and has dedicated over two-decades to
crafting some of the best Rhone wines in Santa Barbara County. We
kept our heads down and focused on the challenges of starting and
running a small family business and we managed to grow and evolve
from a fledgling winery into the critically acclaimed winery that we are
today. In spite of the national accolades, Murray has never deviated
from his first passion.
And Murray now leases both the former Curtis Winery and its estate
vineyards which are already planted to about 50% to Rhone varieties,
which will become a major estate vineyard source for Andrew Murray

Dragonette Cellars

Dragonette Cellars is well known for two things - its great wines and
the knowledge and enthusiasm of its owners. When people write rave
reviews of the wines, such as the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc from Happy
Canyon, they often also include praise of the owners for their affability
and knowledge of wine.
The winery is a family-run business owned by John and Steve
Dragonette and their close friend Brandon Sparks-Gillis. They are
passionately committed to wine quality, and to that end, they personally
perform all of the vineyard and winemaking processes themselves.
Dragonette Cellars logo, the alchemist symbol for liquid gold, also
called the elixir of life, is a fitting way to describe the owners
winemaking philosophy. They believe that great wines take patience and
hard effort to produce. They pay attention to the small details, and do
such things as walk the vineyard rows, fine-tuning the process. Every
decision we make in the vineyards and cellar is aimed at producing a
wine of balance, purity and complexity.
Dragonette produces critically acclaimed wines from exceptional,
cool-climate vineyards throughout the Santa Ynez Valley, including
Sauvignon Blanc, from Happy Canyon, Pinot Noir from the lauded Sta.
Rita Hills appellation, and fascinating Grenache and Syrah from sites in
Ballard Canyon and Los Alamos. Some of the new releases you will find
in Dragonette Cellars tasting room include the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc
Happy Canyon, the 2012 Pinot Noir from Fiddlestix Vineyard in the
Santa Rita Hills and the 2012 Seven (a Syrah Blend).

Dragonette is one of the most fascinating wineries in the Central Coast. The best
wines are truly world class, and I dont use those words lightly. Antonio Galloni

Staffords Famous Chocolates

Behind the counter at Staffords Famous Chocolates, the shop

hums with the steady work of chocolate making. Youll find no
conveyor belts or massive machines churning out truffles though.
People - chocolatiers - craft each piece one by one, hand crafting and
hand dipping with the skill of an artist. They are creating a red wine
truffle, an old fashioned pecan turtle or something truly spectacular,
like the Ooey Gooey Bar, a combination of marshmallow, peanut
butter and caramel dipped in chocolate and topped with nuts.
Staffords flagship location resides in Porterville, and the family
owned and operated business opened in second location in 2012
among the proud residents of the Santa Ynezs wine country. If you
take a stroll through downtown Los Olivos, you will take in
numerous historical sights while indulging in the towns rich love for
art, wine, and food. Staffords embraces the small town, contributing
to its local culture and economy while being very delighted to call the
towns renowned water tower home.
Visit the quaint shop that has been referred to as red wine pairing
heaven with its tempting array of mouth-watering delectable
delights. Staffords uses strictly locally produced products in their
chocolate-making processes from olive oils and lavender to wine and
beer. The result is satisfyingly rich delicacies such as dark chocolate
red wine truffles complete with a rich ganache center and infused
with Santa Ynez Valley red wine. For some additional fun for the

kids, or the kids at heart in your life, pick up some scrumptious

chocolate hedgehogs or a customized caramel apple. So, the next
time you visit Los Olivos, reserve a few minutes for Staffords Famous
Chocolates. Try a complementary sample and indulge your senses
with some of the finest truffles, caramels, English toffees and creams
available on the Central Coast. You will quickly see why Staffords
received the Peoples Choice Award at the Santa Barbara Rape Crisis
Centers Chocolate de Vine 2014. Visit the Los Olivos shop Friday
through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Staffords Famous
Chocolates is located at 2902 San Marcos Rd., Unit D, Los Olivos.

LOS OLIVOS
Wine Tasting in

Toretti Family Vineyards

Santa Maria is a bit of a difficult place to describe to Pinot-philes

who havent been there. Its basically a cowboy town full of ranchers
and farmers and big, manly trucks. Lots of cowboy hats, cowboy
boots and big belt buckles. Not exactly the backdrop most imagine of
when daydreaming about wine country, especially that of the refined
Pinot Noir. Nevertheless, the Santa Maria Valley produces bar none,
some of the finest Pinot Noirs that the entire state of California has to
offer. You just have to come to grips with the image of cowboys and
an open fire grill lined with sizzling beef in your fantasy.
One such cowboy figure is Bob Torres. Torres family has been in
Santa Barbara Countys Santa Maria Valley for over 100 years. A local
legend himself since he opened his first Pappys restaurant in 1957,
Bob is an old-school Santa Maria guy, with the cowboy hat, cowboy
boots and belt buckle to prove it. He loves this land.
Bob planted five acres of vines on his Santa Maria estate in 2000.
The quality of the fruit was recognized immediately, and Caymus
Chuck Wagner snatched up all he could get. In 2006 Torres bottled
under his own label Toretti Family Vineyard.
Forget the images of cowboy country when you enter their Los
Olivos tasting room. It has a relaxed cowboy atmosphere and reflects
their rich family history. Bobs daughter, Milena manages the tasting
room and will welcome you.
Visit the family at 2933 San Marcos Avenue, Suite 101. Visit their
website, Toretti.com for more about their wines.

SOLVANG
Wine Tasting in

Carivints Winery

With a tagline of Blending Wine With Philanthropy, you know

theres something different about Carivints Winery in Solvang. The
winerys name comes from the Latin words Caritas and Vin. Caritas
means charity/philanthropy, and Vin means wine, of course. Blend
the two together and you get Carivints.
The winerys labels are all beautiful paintings of animals and other
wildlife, and profits from sales as well as fundraising events are
donated to various local and national animal rescue groups. But dont
let the beautiful labels and charitable aspects fool you; the wine is
definitely the focus here. Over the years, the wines have collected
many awards and the 2012 Merlot received 91 points and a Cellar
Selection from Wine Enthusiast.
Carivints welcomes newbies to the wine world and happily
shares wine knowledge with their guests to educate them on the

basics. A chalkboard tells the

essentialssee, swirl, sniff, sip and
savor. They diverge from traditional tasting rooms in everything from
the unpretentious wine-speak to the amenities: theres stools and
chairs so you wont have to stand, board and card games, and they
always have dog treats and a kid area. When we were planning the
tasting room we asked ourselves what has stopped us from going
wine tasting in the past? It was that we had kids who would not sit
still in a tasting room, or we couldnt take our dog, or that it was
stuffy, says Fleet Hamilton, Owner and Winemaker. We wanted a
place where we would want to hang out.
Another unique feature youll notice are the games, videos and
toys they have provided for children. Kids in a tasting room?
Absolutely! Carivints doesnt want the fact that you have children to
stop you from having a good time, so theyve provided the
entertainment for them while you sip on some Merlot. So bring the
kids and your furry friends and visit Carivints Winery, Monday
through Friday 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday through
Sunday 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m., located at 476 First Street in
downtown Solvang. To learn more, visit www.Carivintas.com.

Deep Sea is the product of passion for which the Conway family
has for the ocean and wine. The Conway Family owns the beautiful
and historic Rancho Arroyo Grande, in the Edna Valley wine region,
just 13 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. From this place, inspiration
came to produce a variety of wines each speaking of their origins. The
Conway familys wines can be tasted at their Santa Barbara tasting
room, located on Stearns Warf. The tasting room offerings include the
Deep Sea label featuring wines made from the estate vineyard, as well
as other coastal vineyards. This brand appeals to the modern wine
drinker, and reflects the true passion of the Conways, the ocean and
wine. Also available are wines from the Conway label, which are
region specific, celebrating varieties best suited for their respective
appellations. These bottlings include Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa
Valley, Chardonnay from Santa Barbara and Pinot Noir from Santa
Rita Hills. This is an elevated brand produced from, outstanding
lots, resulting in wines of excellent quality, character and ageability,
explains Gillian Conway. The Deep Sea tasting room has an
experience for every type of wine taster. First of all, taking in the view
of the Pacific Ocean while drinking Central Coast wine is unbeatable!
The wine menus consist of different tasting options, including,
White Only, Red Only and mixed flights. Deep Sea also offers
wine by the glass or bottle with reasonable pricing.
The hours are 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. daily. The tasting room is also
available to rent out for private parties of up to 49 guests. For more
information, call the Tasting Room (805) 618-1185.

JANUARY 2015

BRIDLEWOOD WINERY
BY RACHEL HOMMEL

Set in the unspoiled Santa Ynez Valley, Bridlewoods stunning

105-acre winery offers the perfect backdrop to enjoy the rich
heritage of this former equestrian estate. Located 30 miles north of
Santa Barbara County, the winery offers a picturesque venue to
sample some of the Central Coasts best growing regions, utilizing
only the finest grapes. Embodying the diverse sub-appellations and
varietals of the Central Coast, Bridlewood sources their grapes from
all over the valley, creating tremendous diversity and complexity in
their wine styles.
At Bridlewood, winemaking revolves around the art of blending.
Taking a hands-on approach, the winemaking team is involved in
every aspect of winemaking, from barrel to finish. Working with
growers across the Central Coast, Bridlewood looks for grapes that
deliver distinct, concentrated flavors. When harvesting fruit, the
winery pulls whole vineyards at a time, carefully fine-tuning and
testing blocks for flavor ripeness. The wine is then carefully crafted
by fermenting the lots separately, assembling a final blend before
bottling. The result is a spice box of flavors, full of diverse tones
and characteristics.
Letting the varietals shine, the wines are very food friendly, with
bright acidity, elegant structure, and a fruit forward component.
Thoughtful with oak integration and spices, the wines are a wellbalanced complement to any dish. Winery favorites include their
Santa Lucia Highlands Reserve Chardonnay with roasted chicken or
one of their popular Syrahs paired with savory snacks like beef
jerky. A list of popular cheese pairings can also be found on their
website, ranging from tangy goat cheese to creamy feta, nutty
manchego, and salty parmesan, perfect for paring alongside a bottle
of Monterey County Chardonnay.
With 40 acres of planted vineyards, Bridlewood specializes in

54

unique Syrah and Zinfandel. Rich in aroma, the layered flavors offer
notes ranging from black licorice and chocolate to dried cherry and
mocha. Member favorites include the Block 7 Reserve Syrah, Santa
Barbara County Reserve Chardonnay, and the crowd pleaser GSM
blend. This wine embodies the vast Central Coast appellation,
comprised of predominately Grenache, Syrah and the unique white
wine varietal Marsanne. Members of the Estate Wine Club can
enjoy tableside service as they sip and savor the rich and distinctive
flavors of the Central Coast in the members only cellar lounge, or
enjoy exclusive invites to wine release parties.
New this year is Bridlewoods Salt Pairing experience. This
unique tasting invites guests to explore how a trio of premium,
globally sourced salts changes and enhances wines poured. From
softening tannins to cutting acidity, the experience will focus on
flavor, highlighting seasoning at its most primary level. This new
interactive experience will allow guests to more fully understand
salt selection and how it relates to the power of seasoning for food
and wine parings. The experience includes a three-wine flight,
paired alongside three salts: pink, red and black. Guests will have
the opportunity to mix and match, creating a more full
understanding of ones palate and the nuances of wine.
With several flights to choose from, a trip to Bridlewood Winery
offers guests an intimate look into the art of wine. Surrounded by
lush vineyards, guests can enjoy a glass overlooking the vineyard or
in their elegant tasting room. Bridlewood also offers the perfect
venue for a picnic, a game of bocceeven a horse drawn carriage
ride. Staying true to their equestrian roots, every weekend guests
can enjoy a historical tour of the property, with their resident horses
still living on site. Passionate and engaging, Bridlewood staff are
eager to educate customers, revealing the beauty and dedication of
hand-crafted, artisanal wine in the Central Coast.

VENTURA COUNTY
Wine Tasting in

Herzog Wine Cellars

BY MELISSA VOGT

On the beautiful Southern California coast, Herzog Wine Cellars

is nestled in the beachside town of Oxnard. Though the Herzog
family has been making wine in California since the 1950s, their
familys winemaking history documents as far back as a century ago.
It was in Slovakia that Phillip Herzog, one of their Jewish ancestors,
made wine for the Austro-Hungarian court.
The familys love for winemaking grew out of wines important
role in their religious rituals, such as the Kiddusha prayer that is
said over the wines at the start of Sabbath on Friday and other Jewish
holidays. During World War II, Phillips grandson Eugene was able to
keep his family safe; three years later, they left the country to go to
America. After spending time on the east coast making kosher wine,
they moved to California. In 1985, the family began producing their
own wine with the names Baron Herzog and Herzog Wine Cellars.
Currently, Herzog Wine Cellars has a state of the art tasting room
and winery in Oxnard, focusing production on contemporary, high-

end wines at affordable prices. With a plethora of varietals, their

collection of premium California wines is seriously impressive. Visit
and enjoy the granite tasting bar, private tasting rooms, boutique gift
shop and relaxing outdoor terrace. You can even make a reservation
at the Tierra Sur restaurant, located inside the winery; enjoy the fresh
California flavors and Mediterranean style of the handcrafted,
seasonal menu that features locally-sourced food.
Head Chef, Gabriel Garcia, states that For me, cooking is an
expression of the relationship that I have with the growers, with my
team and with the people who enjoy our food. I want to honor all of
the hard work that it takes to grow and produce these ingredients; I
want to reflect that care and dedication in the effort that my team and
I put into each dish. Our guests have chosen to make special
memories in our restaurant and in each bite we want to capture the
honor that it brings us. It is a hand-to-hand relationship, from the
farmers, to our restaurant, to our guests. It puts an emotion into the
food a passion that our guests can taste.
