Wines to Experience
While the gracious and hospitable tasting room staff will
create the perfect tasting experience to fit your preferences, here
are some noteworthy wines worth considering:
2012 The Immigrant is a blend of 86% Merlot, 12% Petit
Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Its dark, dense fruit is complexly
layered with hints of oak and spice ending with a nice long
finish. The label was inspired by a picture taken in 1917 of Ron
Donatis grandfather, Albino Donati. Taken 10 years after Albino
immigrated to the United States from Italy, the picture is a
statement that he had made it in America. Albinos dedication to
creating a better life for his family set the groundwork for the
winery we see today. His hard work and triumphs are truly
worth celebrating, admiring and honoring and that is what The
Immigrant wine does. View Albinos picture in the tasting room
along with a collection of portraits telling the familys celebrated
history.
2011 Ezio is a flagship Bordeaux Blend of 75% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 25% Merlot. This rich wine is named for Rons
father, the first born Donati in the United States.
2011 Claret is their most crowd pleasing red, a blend of 45%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 8% Malbec, 7% Cabernet
Franc. Enjoy with any meal.
2013 Sisters Forever UnOaked Chardonnay is their most
popular white, fermented in 100% stainless steel with bright
citrus aromas, a creamy mid-palate and crisp finish. A wine
specially created to be shared with a sister, family or friends.

EOS WINERY
BY BETHANY RHINE
18
Opened in the mid-1980s and acquired by Proprietor Bill Foley in 2010, Eos has been
building a stunning reputation for its complex whites, bold reds and succulent dessert
wines that are fruit forward, balanced and both readily delicious and approachable.
Eos is named for the Greek goddess of dawn. The myth concludes with Aphrodite
cursing Eos for having an affair with Ares and her punishment was an insatiable appetite
for young men. At the winery, Eos has an insatiable appetite for great wines, but unlike
the myth, one can hardly call this passion a punishment.
The Eos Winery Hospitality Center is conveniently located right off Highway 46 East
and Airport Road and is appreciated for its accessibility, expansive tasting room and
charming gift shop of unique gifts and scrumptious snacks. The casual yet educational
environment coupled with picturesque views of the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards
and rolling hillside makes Eos one of the most enjoyable stops for wine lovers in Paso
Robles.
Eos provides several tasting options to meet the needs and desires of all guests. The
first two options include a tasting experience of six EOS wines guided by our tasting
attendants. They will describe each wine as it is poured to help identify the components
or aroma, flavor and unique personality of each wine. The Public Tasting is experienced at
the tasting bar for $5 and the Private Tasting moves guests to either the barrel or banquet
room for a more intimate experience and includes a keepsake logo wine glass all for $10.
A new enhanced experience perfect for special events or meetings at Eos features a
Private Seated Tasting and Lunch as well as a Private Seated Tasting and Buffet-style
Lunch. The first opportunity includes the private tasting of six Eos wines, a dedicated
tasting attendant and lunch provided by Steins Catering. Guests may select one of Steins
delicious sandwiches served with salad, fresh fruit, an Eos wine-infused brownie and a
keepsake logo wine glass for $25. The latter of the two lunch tasting options includes all
of the above, but instead of the choice of sandwiches, there is a buffet-style lunch by
Steins Catering for $32. Advance reservations are required for each of these lunch
options.
Eos is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located at 2300 Airport Road,
Paso Robles. For more information please call (805) 591-8050 or visit their website at

WINEMAKER PROFILE
MICHAEL GILL
Michael Gill Cellars
BY BETHANY RHINE
What do hunting, dentistry and winemaking have in common? All three are mastered by the
esteemed Michael Gill. Winemaking is the latest of his endeavors and he is wowing enthusiasts and
critics alike with his finely-crafted Rhone varietals.
Michael Gill acquired his stunning Westside Paso Robles property in 1977. At that point he was
advised not to plant grapes because of the potential for frost damage, but in 1998 Michael decided
to plant the grapes anyways and wouldnt you know it, he has never had an issue with frost. From
day one, Michael says, Everything went very well. We received welcomed help from neighbor
Robert Nadeau and it all went smoothly. Syrah was the grape of choice at the time and remains the
backbone of the winery today; however, it took Michael ten years to decide to become the
winemaker himself, up until then he simply sold the juice.
What directs Michaels winemaking process? Nature. All farming is dry farming not a drop of
irrigation is used. Fruit quality is then the primary concern. Where the industry norm sources fruit
at four to six tons per acre, Michael only uses one to one and a half tons per acre. This is intentional
as Michael only wants the best for his limited production, well-crafted wines.
As a dentist, Michael knows precision. He also understands that there is an art to the execution
of this exact training. Michael has taken these procedures and carried them into his winemaking
process. He carefully tends each vine himself with strict care and blends his wine with the same
focus.
If you would like to observe Michaels hunting side, visit the tasting room. Its like walking into a
museum of natural history where you can enjoy his displayed trophies including a polar bear, two
elk and a wolf. Michael runs the tasting room with his wife, Shelley. Its just the two of them. We
want to stay small. We own the winery, the winery doesnt own us.
Michaels greatest challenge as a winemaker is taking on the endeavor of working the slope of
his vineyard every season. And its a very steep slope. As it turns out the steeper the slope, the better

Mamas Meatball
By asking locals, one can find out just how good the food at a
local restaurant is. Ask somebody in the restaurant businessa
bartender, a waiter, even a bus boywhat they think of Mamas
Meatball in San Luis Obispo and their eyes roll towards the
heavens as they breathe a deep sigh; that is how good Mamas
Meatball is.
Set in a small courtyard off of one of the towns main streets in
a place called the Old Creamery, Mamas Meatball is actually
divided in two. On the right is the takeout where people line
up to get their orders of meatballs and more. To the left, fronted
by a huge-trunked tree and a water fountain, is the intimate
restaurant with its mural of the Mediterranean across the back.
Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef Nicola
Allegretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian dishesmany
of them now available in smaller sizes as well, a bow to the
economy and his customers wishes. Among them are half a dozen
soups, a long list of salads (including grilled salmon and a
refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful antipasto
choices, both hot and cold paninis (including, of course, one
made with meatballs) and more pasta dishes than there is space
here to share (though the Ravioli di Pollo all Vodkahomemade
ravioli filled with chicken and served in a vodka saucecannot
go unmentioned).
There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well
as any number of traditional and specialty pizzas, now available in
two sizes, and some far too-tempting desserts.
For a visit to the most authentic fine Italian restaurant in town,
head to Mamas Meatball, located in the Old Creamery plaza at
570 Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo. They are open Tuesday
through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. For takeout
orders or more information, visit their website at
www.mamasmeatball.com. Dont forgot, they also deliver and
have very popular catering serviceswhich work with groups,
including weddingsof every type and size. For catering
information call (805) 704-3744.

to offer as well. He said that the Pinot Noirs produced in the area are
special, with an earthy, mushroom essence. I find them to be more
distinctive and interesting. Each one has its own story, he said.
Grapeline Tours plans to add Sonoma to its line up this spring.
Kelliher said that this addition will open up a wealth of wine tasting
opportunities. He said that the areas long history of winemaking,
starting in the 1800s, make it a wonderful place to explore. He said
that Sonoma wineries are home to many well-established wineries, as
well as small, boutique ones. Sonoma definitely has it all, he said.
People who sign up for Grapeline Tours have another option as
well. They can take a Signature Series Tour that includes a private
reserve tasting hosted by owners or winemakers.
Whatever tour you decide to take, however, the experience is
bound to be rewarding. Reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor
consistently give Grapeline Tours five stars for its service.
In the future, this experience might be available outside of
California. There are plans to extend services to Napa, Oregon,
Washington, Texas, Virginia, New Yorks Finger Lakes Wine Country
and other areas.
Kelliher said that Grapeline is committed to giving back to the
community it serves. Employees are encouraged to volunteer in their
communities, and Grapeline donates more than $20,000 worth of
services a year to support charitable organizations. In recognition of
these efforts, the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce named
Grapeline the Sterling Business of the Year in 2005, and co-owner
Kim Kelliher Temecula Valley Citizen of the Year in 2009.

Wine Tasting in
SANTA BARBARA
n the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, lies Santa Barbara Countys historic
wine growing region. The first vineyard production in these rolling coastal hills dates
back to 1782, when Junipero Serra planted vines on Mission land. About a hundred years later,
there was 260 acres of luscious vineyards and seventeen winemakers in Santa Barbara
County. Sadly, the Prohibition Era destroyed many of these historic vineyard sites and mostly
put an end to winemaking in the regionas was the case in many of the beautiful winegrowing regions across the state. With that being said, the spirit and passion for winemaking
never left Santa Barbara County, and this wine growing region is alive and well today. Talented
winemakers are producing outstanding and pure terroir driven wines from the five American
Viticultural Areas (AVAs), planted mostly to Burgundian, Rhne and Bordeaux grape varieties.
Although the movie Sideways is said to have put San Barbara Countys wine growing
region on the map in 2004, especially the Santa Maria Valley AVA, it is the high quality of the
wine across the county that has continued to uphold this bountiful regions reputation.
Sprawling vineyards and gently rolling hills create a picturesque scene for visitors and locals
alike, who visit the many wineries, tasting rooms and wine bars in the area. In the five AVAs,
wine tasters will find a nice range of wine styles amongst the Burgundian, Rhne and
Bordeaux varietals that are produced.
In the more northern region, cool climate Burgundian varietals reign, such as Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay, due to the maritime influence. This ensures a long temperate growing
season which the Burgundian varietals crave. With ample amount of sunlight, the grapes ripen
very slowlyperfect for producing terroir driven wines with pure varietal characteristics. In
the southern region, there is more of a diurnal shift with warmer nights and cooler days. This
area sees less fog and has different soil types than what is found closer to the coast. The
Bordeaux and Rhne varieties flourish in this warmer climate and the sandy soils with limestone and chalk impart a wonderfully desirable minerality in the wines.
The wineries in Santa Barbara County boast a concentration of incredibly passionate and
talented winemakers; join them year round at their many events, celebrations and festivals, as
well as in their tasting rooms.

LOMPOC WINERIES
Wine Tasting in
Zotovich Estate
Zotovich Estate Vineyard & Winery may be a small, family-run
entity, but its handcrafted wines produce big results. Wine critic
Stephen Tanzer gave Zotovichs 2011 Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and
Syrah a high rating each receiving 92 points.
The road to success wasnt easy, however. Steve Zotovich said that
he didnt walk into a ready-made and profitable vineyard. When he
first bought the vineyard in 2004, it needed a lot of work. The weeds
in the vineyard were taller than the vines, he said. He removed a
grove of Eucalyptus, and made many other improvements. We
started out grassroots to get to where we are today, Zotovich said.
He credits his nephew, winemaker Ryan Zotovich, with
emphasizing the production of serious wines. Ryan created a team
when he joined Zotovich in 2010 with a focus on experimenting and
producing distinctive wines. Stephen Tanzer ratings of Zotovich wines
show that others find their varietals noteworthy.
Zotovichs tasting room is distinctive as well. It is located directly
across from the Lompoc Wine Ghetto, in the Santa Rita Hills Wine
Center. While the word ghetto is usually associated with negative
connotations, wine connoisseurs know that this industrial section of
the city is a hidden gem. Visitors can try wines from a variety of
different vineyards without getting in their car.
In January, Zotovich Estate Vineyard & Winery is going to hold its
5th Annual Release Party. Zotovich said he is expecting about 200
people to attend the event. It is going to be held January 24th and
includes wine tasting, dinner and a chance to socialize with family
and friends. Contact Zotovich for more information.
The Zotovich tasting room is located at 300 North 12th Street,
Suite 1D, Lompoc. The tasting room is open Friday-Sunday from
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or by appointment. For more information,
call (805) 736-1600 or email Roxanne@zotovichcellars.com.
