LED AND PHOTO EXHIBITS
March 26, 2010
SM City Baguio
A pleasant morning to everyone!
First of all, please allow me to thank our gracious hosts, the City
of Baguio, represented today by no less than our beloved Mayor
and great supporter, Honorable Reinaldo Bautista, Jr., and SM City
Baguio Mall Manager, represented here by Ms. Amy Gonzales, for
the wonderful opportunity given to the Department of Energy in
holding our LED and Photo Exhibits here at SM City Baguio today
and tomorrow, to culminate in a much bigger event called the
Earth Hour 2010.
Please allow me also to acknowledge our team from the
Department of Energy with Director Raquel S. Huliganga of the
Energy Research and Testing Laboratory Services (ERTLS),
Director Angie V. Manga of our Administrative Services, and our
Consumer Welfare and Promotion Office who have helped
organized this event, together with our SM counterparts, Ms. Amy
Gonzales, Karen, Russell, Antonette, Jason, among others.
To all environmental advocates, guests, exhibitors, ladies and
gentlemen, once again, (greet good morning once in Ilocano)
The Month of March is teeming with activities. Today marks the
Opening Program of our LED and Photo Exhibits as a prelude
activity to the Earth Hour 2010 celebration. The LED Exhibit
dubbed under the theme: LED s: Leading the Way to a Brighter
Future aims to instill awareness on the use of energy efficient
lighting technologies such as light emitting diodes or LED for
short.

LEDs are not really new in the Philippine market. They are those
tiny lights that you see in modern traffic lights, exit signs, handheld devices such as flashlights. You will also find them in
security cameras, camera flashes, backlighting for LCD televisions
and lightweight laptop displays, automotive lighting, streetlights,
Christmas lights, and architectural lighting. LEDs are also used in
medical equipment, airport and heliport lighting, aquariums, and
a host of other useful applications.
LEDs are durable and use very little amount of power for as low as
0.3 watt. They will soon be the next generation of lighting
devices that will reach our homes and offices after the
government has completed its work on setting energy
performance and safety standards.
The LED Exhibit is being supported by the Asian Development
Bank through the DOEs Philippine Energy Efficiency Project. A lot
of the LED products displayed at the DOE booth came from ADB.
We also have exhibitors who came all the way from Manila like
Clark Premier Industrial Park, Inc., Greenworld, Landlite, and
Megaman. While Philips was not able to make it they also provide
support to this activity.
The Photo Exhibit on the second floor is sponsored by the UNDPGlobal Environment Facility through the DOE-implemented project
called the Philippine Efficient Lighting Market Transformation
Project or PELMATP. The photographs were taken by selected
artists from the Camera Club of the Philippines, a very prestigious
club composed of well-known enthusiasts, such as Atty. Raymund
Fortun and the late Francis Magalona. The Exhibit features the
Faces of Light in Life to depict the importance of lighting in our
daily lives.
These two main projects that we are introducing in the form of
exhibits are part of a gamut of contributions that the DOE is

making to save Mother Earth from the ill effects of climate

change.
We love Baguio. This is the only place where we can enjoy a cool
climate and the panoramic views that is why we keep coming
back to introduce our energy efficiency programs and were glad
Mayor Bautista has always been very supportive of our
campaigns, such as the Switch na to CFLs.
Switching to more energy efficient lighting such as from
incandescent bulb to compact fluorescent lamp or CFL helps
reduce our electricity bill. Thus, our power plants would not need
to produce more electricity so less greenhouse gases will be
released to the atmosphere.
Our Mother Earth is getting ill. She has given all she has to give to
sustain our lives but she never asks us anything in return. If we
dont take steps NOW to save her she will take steps and fix
herself but it is going to be at a huge cost --- of taking lives.
lives of our childrens children or worst .maybe ours.
With that, let me end my speech to campaign for Mother Earth.
Cast your vote and give an hour to show love for Mother Earth,
tomorrow, Saturday, March 27, 2010, by switching off your lights
from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Maraming Salamat at Mabuhay kayong lahat!
