Flare System

16.1 : List the procedure to ignite the flare using the flare ignition panel

Make sure that there is enough gas to ignite the flare

Open fuel gas line to the pilot
Open air line to the pilot
Adjust the ratio through regulator till you get the spark
Push ignition button
In case of ignition failure repeat the procedure after adjusting air ratio

16.2 : Ignite the flare using the flare gun

Make sure there is enough gas to ignite the flare

Take a suitable position to get the flare in the shooting range
Take wind direction in consideration ( Stand upward wind direction )
Trigger the gun to the top of the flare stack

Take care of the flare pit

Remove unwanted personnel
This way is to be used just in case of a malfunction in the ignition system
The flare gun must only be handled by operators familiar with all the
safety precautions required
16.3 : Explain the purpose of Pilot burner / Pilot gas
Pilot Burners are situated at the flare tip and are remotely ignited with fuel
supplied from the flame front generator
Pilot gas : To supply the gas to the burner
16.4 : Describe the function of the flare knock out drum .
The function of FKOD is to separate liquids and condensate from gas
and route them back to the process
16.6 : Monitor the flare operating parameters and record readings .
1- FKDO pressure 2- FKDO temperature 3- FKDO liquid level 4LCV functioning

16.7 : Drain flare knock out drum

During abnormal situations the amount of gas flowing through the
flare header is very high . Therefore the liquid level
should kept as low as Possible .The pumps will start to maintain the
level lower than 25 % . a high level must be
corrected immediately and supervisor to be Informed
16.8 : Check the safe guarding system on FKOD
LSHH / LSH
LSLL / LSL
16.9 : Identify the source of the FKOD and what steps will you take if the
liquid level rises ?
LP Flare Knock out Drum : From all surge tanks , Degassing Boots
HP Flare Knock Out Drum : From all vessels ( HP,IP, LP, Test , Free
water, Heater treater, V-292 ) , Gas Plant
Stripping towers , K-1000

If the liquid level rises :

Check that the pumps are running
Ensure the pumps are pumping
Check if there is a carry over and rectify immediately to avoid
TANAK ESD
Carry over to LP flare has one source which is degassing boots
Carry over to HP flare usually comes either
from stripping tower ( blockage in dilution water) or
from vessels
( High High level )
16.10 : Explain the control / shutdown logics on the FKOD / closed drain
HP Flare Knock Out Drum V-246
30% 1st pump starts
42% 2nd pump starts
LSHH 99% ( TANAK ESD)
LP Flare Knock Out Drum

17% 1st pump starts

25% 2nd pump starts
LSHH 63% ( TANAK ESD)
Closed drain V-248
30% 1st pump starts
36% 2nd pump starts
45% 3rd pump starts
LSHH 99% ( TANAK ESD)
