GreenDayisanAmericanpunkrockbandformedin1986byleadvocalistandguitaristBillieJoe
ArmstrongandbassistandbackingvocalistMikeDirnt.Formuchoftheircareerthebandhasbeenatrio
withdrummerTrCool.In2012guitaristandbackingvocalistJasonWhitebecameafullmemberafter
playinginthebandasasessionandtouringguitaristfor13years.[1]CoolreplacedformerdrummerJohn
Kiffmeyerin1990,priortotherecordingoftheband'ssecondstudioalbum,Kerplunk(1992).

California.Theband'searlyreleaseswerefromtheindependentrecordlabelLookout!Records.In1994,
itsmajorlabeldebutDookiereleasedthroughRepriseRecordsbecameabreakoutsuccessandeventually
soldover10millioncopiesintheU.S.[2]GreenDaywaswidelycredited,alongsidefellowCalifornia
punkbandsSublime,[3]BadReligion,theOffspring,andRancid,withpopularizingandreviving
mainstreaminterestinpunkrockintheUnitedStates.[4][5]
GreenDay'sthreefollowupalbums,Insomniac(1995),Nimrod(1997),andWarning(2000)didnot
achievethemassivesuccessofDookie,thoughtheywerestillsuccessful,withInsomniacandNimrod
reachingdoubleplatinumandWarningreachinggoldstatus.[6]Theband'srockopera,AmericanIdiot
(2004),reignitedtheband'spopularitywithayoungergeneration,sellingfivemillioncopiesinthe
UnitedStates.[6]Theband'seighthstudioalbum,21stCenturyBreakdown,wasreleasedin2009which
achievedtheband'sbestchartperformancetodate.[7]21stCenturyBreakdownwasfollowedupbya
trilogyofalbumscalledUno!,Dos!,andTr!releasedinSeptember,NovemberandDecember2012
