W
ine Garage founder Todd Miller drilled a couple of holes in
the wall at his bustling Calistoga wine shop nearly two years
ago in anxious anticipation of having his own winery’s juice
flowing from one side of the wall to happy customers waiting on the
other side.
Well, it took a while, but the Wine Garage winery is finally open
for business. From those holes in the wall now hang a couple of fabri-
cated stainless steel nozzles, and out of them flow two righteous and
delicious blends, B1 (a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon,
Carmenere, Merlot and Petit Verdot) and R1 (a Rhone-style blend of
Syrah, Zinfandel, Grenache, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah). “My biggest
problem,” says Miller, “is that customers can’t decide which to buy
because they love them both so much.”
And with good reason. Miller bought the indi- from grapes they crush. For reds they offer a

toga. Miller drove the roads less traveled, meeting with winemakers,
walking in their vineyards, and tasting their grapes, barrel samples
and finished wines. The winemakers, tickled to have a real, live wine
buyer at their winery, shared stories with Miller over a glass of wine
at the dinner table.
The Wine Garage carries a wide selection of bargains from
Sonoma and Napa, and gems from as far afield as Paso Robles, Lodi,
the Sierra Foothills and Mendocino County. The store still doesn’t
carry any wines priced over $25, and Miller doesn’t buy a wine for
the store unless he loves it. What’s best is the Wine Garage staff takes
the guesswork out of wine shopping: tell the staff what you’re looking
for and they will steer you to the perfect bottle.
The Wine Garage is now a licensed winery, and in addition to the
blends on tap, they produce a line of their own Wine Garage wines

A new exhibition of brilliant and colorful new works by local
Artist Ann Hollister is now hanging at the Charles Creek Vineyard
Tasting Room and Gallery in downtown Sonoma. The show will
run through December 3.
Ann Hollister’s work is a fusion of styles: calligraphy, watercolor
painting and the influence on her life of living in the Hawaiian
Islands. The acrylic paintings are a new addition to her work.
Volcanic eruptions and bamboo forests invite the viewer to visually
and mentally enter the paintings and enjoy the secrets to be found.
In the abstract work boldness, yet attention to detail, add intrigue
to each one.
Hollister taught calligraphy in San Francisco and Oakland, Cali-
fornia and Kealakekua and Honolulu, Hawaii. She partnered with
Terry Englehart in the Pengraphics Studio of Calligraphy and
Graphic Design in Oakland for six years. Her work has been
shown in California, Hawaii and Germany. She now lives in
Sonoma with her feline assistant, Isabelle.
Specializing in high quality Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet
Sauvignon with a bit of Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Syrah and
Grenache from great vineyard sources in the Sonoma and Napa
Counties, Charles Creek Vineyard produces wines that are food
friendly, fruit driven and easily paired with the courses of a meal.
The winery tasting room is conveniently situated in a charming
1890s era storefront on the historic Sonoma Plaza. In addition to
wine tasting and sales, the tasting room also provides space to show
the work of local artists.
The Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery, open
seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., is located at 483 First
St. West in downtown Sonoma. For more information, call (707)
935-3848 or email alan@charlescreek.com.
