MONTAGE
Description:
An insperational montage made by the blending of two or
more images, and the use of typography.

Date:
10/25/13

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 11
Emily Kunz

Program/Tool:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers.
Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:
I pulled in the background image and resized it to 8.5
x 11.I added a noise filter to the background image to
enhance the number of stars and masked out the center
of the galaxy so it didnt get too busy. I placed the world
image on top of the first image, resized it, and placed
a mask on it. With black paint and a 25% opacity, softedged brush, I masked out all the background, softened
up the edge and the overall image. I then copied the
earth and used a 15% opacity brush to soften up the
edges of both Earths even more to the point where the
edges and part of the Earth merged with the background.
I then added some text using two different fonts. I pulled
a light blue color from the background image to use for
the 1st, 3rd, and 4th line. I added a layer style (outer
beveled edges) and a filter (noise) to without number. I
used repetition of the Earth, contrasts with the lighter text
on a dark background, asymmetry, and alignment to help
pull together this composition.

brochure
Description:
A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:
11/07/14

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 11
Emily Kunz

Programs/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Learn how to wrap text around an image.
Use paragraph styles in InDesign.

Process:
I first created a logo in Illustrator. I then picked four
photos from the internet and edited them in Photoshop.
Three of them I used the selection tool to pick out a
portion of the photo. I then used InDesign to layout a
two sided brochure, pulling in the logo and photos to use
in my layout.I then collected critiques from some of my
peers. With the different suggestions, I went back and
revised my brochure and then went for a second round of
critiques.

event ad
Description:
A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using
only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Date:
10/12/14

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 11
Emily Kunz

Programs/Tools:
Microsoft Word
HP Photo Scanner
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:
The process I went through was practicing scanning
in a high resolution image, sketching ideas, designing
a digital draft in Microsoft Word, collecting critiques
from outside sources, and completing a final draft. I
employed the use of repetition through the use of the
same image, rectangular boxes, and colors. I also used
asymmetry and right alignment to keep the composition
more interesting. I kept the colors in the similar range
and kept things simple to create unity and great flow of
white space. It took a little time to get use to designing in
Microsoft Word, but after playing around with it for a little
bit it actually ended up working pretty well in designing
this event ad. In a final set of revisions, I updated the
colors and proximity to make it easier to read.

imaging
Description:
A personally taken photograph that has been edited/
formatted using Photoshop.

Date:
2/6/13

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools:
Canon Camera
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then
download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation
levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:
The process was taking well laid out photos, editing
them in Photoshop, creating a design around one of the
photos, collecting critiques from outside sources, and
then completing a final draft of the design. In my design I
employed the use of repetition of shape and color. I also
used a yellow monochromatic color scheme to create
unity with the photo and over gestalt in the entire piece.
To add to the gestalt of the piece and overall unity, I
created petal shapes that were based off the photo and
rounded them around the photo to create a focal point. In
a final revision, I switched to a red color scheme to better
support the romantic message.

document to keep links intact.

Process:
The process I went through was sketching, designing a
digital draft in InDesign, collecting critiques from outside
sources, and completing a final draft. I employed the use
of repetition through the use of three black boxes and
five grey circles. This also created a contrast with the
white that helps draw the viewers eye to key information
on the flier. I kept the items on the page very simple and
spaced out to encourage great flow of white space. I
also employed the use of text hierarchy in order to draw
