ANSI (American National Standards Institute)

As the voice of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) empowers its members and
constituents to strengthen the U.S. marketplace position in the global
economy while helping to assure the safety and health of consumers and
the protection of the environment.
The Institute oversees the creation, promulgation and use of thousands of
norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector:
from acoustical devices to construction equipment, from dairy and livestock
production to energy distribution, and many more. ANSI is also actively
engaged in accrediting programs that assess conformance to standards
including globally-recognized cross-sector programs such as the ISO 9000
(quality) and ISO 14000 (environmental) management systems.
HISTORY
In 1916, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (now IEEE) invited the
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society of
Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical
Engineers (AIME) and the American Society for Testing Materials (now ASTM
International) to join in establishing an impartial national body to coordinate
standards development, approve national consensus standards, and halt
user confusion on acceptability. These five organizations, who were
themselves core members of the United Engineering Society (UES),
subsequently invited the U.S. Departments of War, Navy and Commerce to
join them as founders.
ANSI adopted its present name in 1969. Throughout its various
reorganizations and name changes, the Institute was steadily increasing its
efforts to coordinate and approve voluntary national standards, now known

as American National Standards. Domestic programs were expanding and

being modified to meet the changing needs of industry, government and
other sectors.

ISO
ISO International Standards ensure that products and services are safe,
reliable and of good quality. For business, they are strategic tools that
reduce costs by minimizing waste and errors and increasing productivity.
They help companies to access new markets, level the playing field for
developing countries and facilitate free and fair global trade.
HISTORY
The ISO story began in 1946 when delegates from 25 countries met at the
Institute of Civil Engineers in London and decided to create a new
international organization to facilitate the international coordination and
unification of industrial standards. In February 1947 the new organization,
ISO, officially began operations.
Since then, we have published over 19 500 International Standards covering
almost all aspects of technology and manufacturing.

TIA
The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) is the leading trade
association representing the global information and communications
technology (ICT) industry through standards development, policy initiatives,
business opportunities, market intelligence and networking events. With
support from hundreds of members, TIA enhances the business
environment for companies involved in telecom, broadband, mobile
wireless, information technology, networks, cable, satellite, unified
communications, emergency communications and the greening of
technology. TIA is accredited by ANSI.

HISTORY
In 1924, a small group of suppliers to the independent telephone industry
organized to plan an industry trade show. Later, that group became a
committee of the United States Independent Telephone Association. In 1979,
the group split off as a separate affiliated association, the United States
Telecommunications Suppliers Association, and became one of the world's
premier organizers of telecom exhibitions and seminars. TIA was formed in
April 1988 after a merger of USTSA and the Information and
Telecommunications Technologies Group of EIA. EIA began as the Radio
Manufacturers Association in 1924. Since 1988, TIA has advocated numerous
policy issues for the benefit of its members, sponsored engineering
committees that set standards determining the pace of development in the
industry, provided a marketplace for members and their customers, and
served as a forum for the examination of industry issues and industry
information. In the fall of 2000, the MultiMedia Telecommunications
Association (MMTA) was integrated into TIA.

EIA
The Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA, until 1997 Electronic Industries
Association) was a standards and trade organization composed as an
alliance of trade associations for electronics manufacturers in the United
States. They developed standards to ensure the equipment of different
manufacturers was compatible and interchangeable. The EIA ceased
operations on February 11, 2011, but the former sectors continue to serve
the constituencies of EIA.
HISTORY
In 1924 United States-based radio manufacturers formed a trade group
called the Associated Radio Manufacturers. Later that same year, the group
renamed itself the Radio Manufacturers Association (RMA). Over time, new
electronic technologies brought new members and name changes, including
Radio Television Manufacturers Association (RTMA) (1950), Radio
Electronics Television Manufacturers (RETMA) (1953) and Electronics
Industries Association (EIA) (1957). The group renamed itself for the last
time in 1997, when the Electronics Industry Association became the
Electronics Industries Alliance (EIA), reflecting the changing membership of
the group, including non-manufacturer members.
The organization's headquarters were in Arlington, Virginia. The EIA divided
its activities into the following sectors:
The EIA ceased operations on February 11, 2011. EIA designated ECA to
continue to develop standards for interconnect, passive and electromechanical (IP&E) electronic components under the ANSI-designation of EIA
standards.

IEEE
IEEE is the world's largest professional association dedicated to advancing
technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and
its members inspire a global community through IEEE's highly cited
publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and
educational activities.
HISTORY
IEEE, an association dedicated to advancing innovation and technological
excellence for the benefit of humanity, is the worlds largest technical
professional society. It is designed to serve professionals involved in all
aspects of the electrical, electronic, and computing fields and related areas
of science and technology that underlie modern civilization.
IEEEs roots go back to 1884 when electricity began to become a major
influence in society. There was one major established electrical industry,
the telegraph, which since the 1840s had come to connect the world with a
data communications system faster than the speed of transportation. The
telephone and electric power and light industries had just gotten underway.
