GENERAL INFORMATION
This course is an introduction to organic chemistry. Topics will include visualizing
molecular structure and stereochemistry, understanding the basis of a chemical reaction,
and predicting molecular transformations and mechanisms.
Organic chemistry is often viewed as a difficult course by students. I strongly
recommend that everyone attempt to keep up with the class as it proceeds. This is not a
course where it is easy to ‘cram’ for a test. Students invariably do better once they learn
how to visualize organic molecules and reactions in three dimensions. If you know this is a
problem, I recommend using molecular models to try and view the molecules. Also, try to
realize that this is not a memorization course. While some memorization is unavoidable,
the purpose of this course is to teach everyone the underlying basic principles that drive an
organic reaction. Once these principles are handled, a student will be able to understand
and predict why any reaction occurs whether studied previously or not.
4 Tests will be given during class time according to the syllabus. No make-up tests
will be given. You may drop one test score, but the final exam cannot be dropped. In
addition, there will be 4 quizzes and you are allowed to drop one quiz score also.
Questions for exam are 25% from lectures, 40% from problem sets in the book, and 35%
from myself. If mistake in grading is found, you can request re-grading, but your whole
test will be reviewed as well as the questions. Your scores, lecture notes, and answer keys
of quizzes and tests will be posted on WebCT, thus you must have an active NetID and
password for access.
