Contact The course will cover selected topics in chapters 1 through 11.
Information The topics to be covered from each chapter are:

1. Logic, Sets and Functions: connectives, truth tables, laws of logic, quantifiers,
predicates, set theory, functions.
2. Algorithms, Integers and Matrices: algorithms, complexity of algorithms,
integers, number theory, hashing, public key encryption.
3. Mathematical Reasoning and Recursion: proofs, math induction, recursive
algorithms.
4. Counting: permutations, combinations, combinations with repetition, the binomial
theorem.
5. Discrete Probability: probability theory, expected value and variance.
8. Graphs: graph representation, isomorphism, Euler circuits, Hamilton circuits,
shortest path algorithms, planar graphs, graph coloring
9. Trees: tree applications, tree traversal, trees and sorting
11. Modeling Computation: languages and grammars, finite state machines, language
recognition

TEST DATES (subject to change): Note: Only pencils and blank paper are allowed during
tests.

GRADING:
The three exams will determine grades. (The HW assignments will not be graded).
The final grade will be composed as follows:

• Test 1 1/3
• Test 2 1/3
• Test 3 1/3

Letter grades will be assigned as given below. I reserve the right to make the grading scale
easier than given here.

90-100 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
0 -69 F

Your grade will be based only on your test scores. PLEASE do not ask me to change your
grade or give you a grade for any other reason. I know that some of you will lose
scholarships, be deported, etc. if you do not make a certain grade; there is nothing I can do
about this. Of course, if a mistake was made in scoring, I will correct it. Any requests for
changes to scores must be made within 30 days after the day the graded material was
returned to the class. Any request for a grade change must be made within 60 days after the
day that grades were posted.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

The University of Texas System Policy on Academic Honesty appears in the Regents
Rules and Regulations, Part One, Chapter VI, Section 3, Paragraph 3.22. Any student who
commits an act of scholastic dishonesty is subject to discipline. Scholastic dishonesty
includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any
work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an
examination for another, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the
attempt to commit such acts. The minimum penalty for academic dishonesty is a failing
grade (zero) for the project or examination. Do your own work on all projects and exams.
