SHRMS CLUB

ULTIMATE
BIANNUAL

SOCIAL

SCRUBS, or the SHRM

Club Recruitment Ultimate Biannual
Social, is held every semester for older
members and newer members of
SHRM to interact and have a fun
time.
The event was coordinated by our
very own Director of Student Affairs,
Jessica Higashi. We had our social at
Manoa District Park. We had a huge
turnout as more than 40 SHRMies
were there!

We concluded the day with some

dodgeball. SHRMies showed their arm
strength and reflexes in this epic
match. Even the people around the
area were interested in the game as
they cheered.
After that, it was time to clean up and
break down the tent. We all made a
new friend that day and SHRMies had
a blast. We would like to thank Jessica
and the rest of the executive board for
coming early to reserve a spot and
making sure every SHRMie had fun.

We started off SCRUBS with an

introduction from the executive board
and jumped right into our first game,
Who are you? The objective was to
learn the other persons name, do a
funny dance, and Jan-Ken-Po to
determine who would part of their
line. In the end, there were two long
lines and the losing team would have
to crawl in between the legs of the
winning team. Everyone got to know
each others names and had a blast.
It wouldnt be a SCRUBS, if there
wasnt any dancing. We had four
teams of amazing dancers perform for
our judges. Our talented dancers gave
a memorable SHRM down for
WHAT?!, Crank that, and popping
performances. There was a tie but we
were all winners.

Back to Business
STRIKE!
Was the sound you would hear at
IBCs Back to Business Bowling
Night. SHRMies capped off a long
week with some fun bowling with
other Shidler Clubs. We had large
turnout so the two lanes assigned were
filled with SHRMies.

We had a friendly competition

between our alumni and current
members. Its safe to say that the
current members soundly defeated the
alumni.

It was great to see SHRMies distressed

and having a fun time! They enjoyed
this fun atmosphere and look forward
to other fun events.

Besides bowling, you can find

SHRMies interacting with other clubs
or dancing to the jams that were
playing.

VOLUNTEERING is
something SHRM Aloha
prides itself in. We love giving
back to the community
anyway we can.
From working at the Waikiki
Hoolaulea to Art After Dark
to Tour De Cure, each
community service gives
everybody a chance to work
towards one common goal,
helping others.
Our first community service at
the Waikiki Hoolaulea was
one that required
communication, teamwork,
and a keen eye.
Art After Dark allowed us to
see beautiful art as well as
helping out. It also gave
SHRMies a chance to look their
best as the event required them
to be spiffy.
Tour De Cure was another fun
volunteering event that made
us work as a team to get things
done.
Community Service was a
bonding experience that made
each hour together much more
meaningful and fun!

Mock
Interview
MOCK Interview has become a
staple for all SHRMies, as it allows
them to participate in interviews
with professionals and receive
feedback.
Even though it was a mock
interview, SHRMies took upon
themselves to dress in formal
business attire, and interviewed like
it was a real interview.
The professionals were very
impressed with their efforts and
abilities to answer questions. We
would like to thank all of the
professionals that took time to help
us! Your contributions have help
SHRMies develop professionally!

Socials

Beach day, Flotilla, and Tailgate

PLAYAs hard as you work!

At SHRM, we understand there
needs to be a balance of
professional development and fun.
Thats why there were fun socials
such as a beach day, floatilla, and
tailgating planned to allow
SHRMies to relax and make new
friends.
When we plan beach days, we do
things with a twist. A tie dye was
what we came up with and it was a
messy and fun time. We fed hungry
stomachs with Chef Jessica behind
the grill.
We were back at the beach with
Floatilla, but this time it was a joint
social with other Shidler clubs.
Members had floaties and could
drift away to relaxation.
SHRM Aloha always supports our
UH football team so it was only
right we have a tailgate before
game. We were joined by other
Shidler Clubs, which made it extra
fun.
Seeing SHRMies having fun,
smiling and laughing, and making
friends is something we strike for.

Workshops

The Society for Human Resources

Management, Aloha Chapter intends
to equip its members with the skills
necessary to transform their
professionalism into a career. Through
a series of three, tiered workshops
that build upon each other, students
will learn what skills are necessary to
become a professional, and then
how to practice those skills in order to
obtain a career.

Company Tours

Company tours are opportunities to

gain insight about exceptional
businesses in Hawaii. Members will
see behind the scenes and learn
about the corporate culture and
how facilities are run in the company,
as well as, the role they plays in the
Hawaiis community. Members will
learn the different areas and
positions in the company and find
out what the company looks for in

Workshops
INTERVIEWING is a major
aspect of getting a job, so we got IMan Uyeda from Proservice to
help us.
She gave very helpful tips on what
to do before and after an interview.
She also gave clear examples of
what recruiters want to hear and
how to stand out among other
candidates to increase your chances
of getting a job.
Following up with a professional
was just as important as during an
interview. SHRMies were advised
to do so after every interview so
they could learn more about the
organization and be more
memorable.
Thank you I-Man for your
expertise on this topic and
SHRMies had a great time learning
about interviewing.

RESUMES,
We all need one to get a job, but
constructing an ideal one for a
position could be very difficult.
Thats why the professionals at
Kumabe HR, Kara Iwasaki and
Kristine Uclaray, has graciously
volunteer to teach SHRMies how
to build a great resume as well as
establishing a good cover letter and
social media.
SHRMies got to see the
importance of having a clean social
media when it comes to jobs. As
well as having a LinkedIn that
other recruiters could view.
Thank you very much to Kara and
Kristine for taking time out to help
us out. SHRMies learned a lot and
itll undoubtedly help them land
jobs.

Company Tour: Staffing

Solutions and New York Life

COMPANY tours are a great way

for SHRMies to visit a company
and see the culture of it. It allows
professionals to talk to them and
exchange contacts. This
beneficial relationship helps both
parties.

At our Staffing Solutions Tour,

members were able to do a mock
clerical test such as a typing test.
Our very own Vice President,
Charise Yamatsuka, was blazing
fast at over 100 words per
minute!

For this semester, Staffing

Solutions and New York Life
allowed us to visit their office and
see their operations. It was
fascinating to see the environment
and behind-the-scenes of each
company. We were then allowed
to ask questions to a panel.

For our New York Life Tour, we

were allowed to hear the success
stories of each professional and
how they positioned themselves
to get where they are now.
It was great learning from all of
these professionals and thank you
for giving us the opportunity to
do so.

MEET OUR SHRMIES

Kelsey Monticalvo
My major is Human Resource Management
and I am expected to graduate in Spring
2015. Within this coming Spring semester,
one goal I have is to find an internship that
will get me experience in the HR field as well
as expand my knowledge on what it's like to
work within HR and building
connections. Another goal I have for myself
is to find a job/career area that I
am passionate about and also
one that allows me to help
and serve others. I find a lot
of fulfillment out of serving
others to help them work
through situations or to help
them achieve their goals, so
finding something that fits this
with my career path would be
ideal to achieving this goal.
A year ago, I tried out one of the other
business clubs, joined without knowing
anyone, but it wasn't a good fit for me and I
never really tried any other clubs. At the
beginning of this semester, a couple of my
classmates mentioned SHRM to me and
suggested I join with them. This appealed to
me because I would actually know a couple
people prior to joining and I also heard it
was one of the smaller business clubs. With

Matthew Liboon
My major is Business Management and I will
be graduating this December (2014). My
goals are to one day hold a management
position with a great company and
eventually develop my own business.
I joined SHRM because I wanted to get more
involved with school activities during my last
semester. At first my friend wanted
me to join a Fraternity with him.
But with my schedule I did not
have time to pledge. I than
saw the SHRM table set up at
Shidler recruiting new
members. Thats where I met
Arik Ma who broke down
what the club was all about.
I knew this would be the perfect
opportunity to get involved on
campus and yet still have time to work my
on-campus job and have time to study.
Ive learned quite a bit while at SHRM. The
guest speakers were awesome and gave us
valuable information on how to do well in an
interview. SHRM also helped me clean up
my resume to make it look very presentable
to employers.
My favorite part about SHRM would have to
be all of the social activities that are held

that in mind, I went to one of the meetings

and felt welcomed, and decided to give it a
shot. SHRM has taught me a lot about being
in a professional setting and how to get a
job through all the workshops, office tours
and mock interviews that I've attended this
semester. I've learned how to better build
my resume, how to approach professionals,
the do's and don'ts of interviewing, and
mostly to just be myself through it all. It's also
helped me to think about the
different areas of HR that I could
possibly pursue and which ones
my interest me more than
others.
In 5 years, I see myself in an HR
management
position. Although I'm from
California, I've really loved living in
Hawaii and it's been a great fit for me,
so I know I want to stay here. Working with
Hawaiian Airlines has really appealed to me
because they are doing really well in their
industry and I really admire the way they run
their business/company through my own
personal experience and interaction, as well
as things that I've heard and read. I see
myself finding a good fit and securing a
position with the HR department in Hawaiian
Airlines.

during the semester. This includes club

picnics, tailgates and Karaoke. Aw yes
Karaoke would have to be my
favorite part about SHRM. I also enjoyed
meeting so many new people that if I was
not in SHRM I would have never met. I enjoy
working out, listening to music and simply
spending time with friends and family. I see
myself working with a great company and
working just as hard there as Ive been
working in school.
I also see myself traveling the
world and if the opportunity
arises I would love to work
abroad in another country.

SHRM WELLNESS TIPS

Healthy Eating
Helpguide.org

1. Simplify
Instead of being overly concerned with counting
calories or measuring portion sizes, think of your diet in
terms of color, variety, and freshness. This way it should
be easier to make healthy choices. Focus on finding
foods you love and easy recipes that incorporate a
few fresh ingredients. Gradually, your diet will become
healthier and more delicious.

2. Start slow and make changes to eating habits

over time
Trying to make your diet healthy overnight isnt realistic
or smart. Changing everything at once usually leads to
cheating or giving on your new eating plan. Make
small steps, and as your small changes become habits,
you can continue to add healthier choices to your diet

3. Every change you make to improve your diet

matters
You dont have to be perfect and you dont have to
completely eliminate foods you enjoy to have a
healthy diet. The long term goal is to feel good, have
more energy, and reduce the risk of cancer and
disease. Dont let your missteps derail youevery
healthy food choice you make counts.

4. Smaller portions
When dining out, choose a starter instead of an entree,
split a dish with a friend, and don't order supersized
anything. At home, use smaller plates, think about
serving sizes in realistic terms, and start small. If you
don't feel satisfied at the end of a meal, try adding
more leafy green vegetables or rounding off the meal
with fresh fruit.

21

5. Eat Breakfast
Design your sleep environment to establish the
conditions you need for sleep. Your bedroom should
be cool between 60 and 67 degrees. Your bedroom
should also be free from any noise that can disturb your
sleep. Finally, your bedroom should be free from any
light. Check your room for noises or other distractions.
This includes a bed partner's sleep disruptions such as
snoring.

6. Try not to think of certain foods as off-limits

When you ban certain foods or food groups, it is
natural to want those foods more, and then feel like a
failure if you give in to temptation. If you are drawn
towards sweet, salty, or unhealthy foods, start by
reducing portion sizes and not eating them as often. If
the rest of your diet is healthy, eating a burger and fries
once a week probably wont have too much of a
detrimental effect on your health. Eating junk food just
once a month will have even less of an impact. As you
reduce your intake of unhealthy foods, you may find
yourself craving them less or thinking of them as only
occasional indulgences.

7. Listen to your body

Ask yourself if you are really hungry, or have a glass of
water to see if you are thirsty instead of hungry. During
a meal, stop eating before you feel full. It actually
takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your body that
it has had enough food, so eat slowly.

8. Avoid eating at night

Try to eat dinner earlier in the day and then fast for 1416 hours until breakfast the next morning. Early studies
suggest that this simple dietary adjustmenteating
only when youre most active and giving your digestive
system a long break each daymay help to regulate
weight. After-dinner snacks tend to be high in fat and
calories so are best avoided, anyway.
