INTELLIGENCE FOR THE WINE CONSUMER

BY LEN NAPOLITANO

What is the difference

between Syrah and Petite Sirah?
Petite Sirah, also known as Durif, is usually used as a blending
grape for adding color, tannin and intensity of fruit flavor. It is not
uncommon to find this grape as a single varietal wine, though fewer
than ten percent of U.S. producers make Petite Sirah. The grape can
create a delicious and interesting wine with dense, inky quality,
blackberry flavor and a long smoky finish. In fact, there isnt anything
petite about it, except for its small berry diameter and cluster size.
If you like big, bold, red wine, you will like Petite Sirah. Check
out PS, I Love You, an organization of Petite Sirah
producers. They conduct tasting events open to the
public a fun way to experience this special varietal.
Syrah, known in Australia as Shiraz, is more frequently
made as a single-varietal wine. The color is less intense than

Petite Sirah, though not without strong and mouthwatering flavor.

Naturally peppery, Syrah is a popular choice to serve with beef stews
and flavorful dishes made with game. Its geographic home has long
been associated with the north-south-running Rhne Valley, a
controlled wine appellation in the southeast section of France.
Famous Syrah-based wines from the Rhne Valley are Cte Rtie and
Hermitage, representing Syrahs full potential as a forward, spicy wine
of deep ruby color.

Santa Margarita Ranch: A Singular Viticultural Area

Ancient Peaks Winerys Estate Margarita Vineyard Now Resides in New Namesake AVA
Ancient Peaks Winerys estate Margarita Vineyard now enjoys the
distinction of being the only vineyard within its own namesake
American Viticultural Area (AVA) in Paso Robles, specifically the new
Santa Margarita Ranch AVA.
Indeed, the Federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau
recently approved the establishment of the Santa Margarita Ranch AVA
and ten other sub-appellations to fall within the umbrella Paso Robles
AVA on Californias Central Coast.
Weve always emphasized that Margarita Vineyard stands alone and
apart as the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles region, said
Doug Filipponi, viticulturist and co-owner of Ancient Peaks Winery.
This new recognition of Santa Margarita Ranch as its own AVA confirms
what weve been saying all along, and were very excited about it. He
added, Our labels will still lead with the Paso Robles AVA and will
always embrace the Paso Robles message, but this new Santa Margarita
Ranch designation helps us further communicate the distinct growing
conditions that ultimately distinguish our wines.
The Santa Margarita Ranch AVA is situated along the foot of the
coastal Santa Lucia Mountain Range, roughly twenty-five miles southeast
of the city of Paso Robles and just fourteen miles from the Pacific Ocean
to the west. Following are highlights with quotes from the approved
Santa Margarita Ranch AVA petition:
The Santa Margarita Ranch viticultural area is distinctive from that of
other areas of the Paso Robles AVA, in terms of topography, geology,
geological history, soils, and climate.
Santa Margarita Ranch is one of the coolest sub-appellations within the
Paso Robles AVA, making it very much a true, cool Region II climate.
The maritime influence increases to the west towards the Pacific
Ocean and below specific topographic gaps in the range.
The surficial geology here is also different than in other parts of the
Paso Robles AVAwith an extensive area of the Miocene age Santa
Margarita marine sandstone interfacing with the Monterey shales,
granitic rocks to the east, and slices (due to faulting) of the older
Cretaceous marine sedimentary rocks and conglomerates to the west.
Of the eleven sub-appellations within the Paso Robles AVA, Santa
Margarita Ranch receives among the highest amount of rainfall29
inches per year on average as Pacific storms dump their water across
the steep, high mountain ridge.
Said Director of Winemaking Mike Sinor, We get a cold spring
followed by a pronounced summer marine influence, resulting in a late,
long growing season that fosters full flavors and fine structure. Margarita
Vineyard also spans an unusual range of soils, so we get a lot of block-toblock complexity in the field. I think that our wines speak pretty clearly
to this distinctive sense of place.

In Santa Barbara County, the Santa Maria Valley appellation is

home to many historic and famous vineyard sites. One such parcel of
land, the Bien Nacido Vineyard, has established itself as a premier
growing site for world-class Pinot Noir. Since 1969, the Millersfifth
generation California farmershave owned and farmed this
acclaimed vineyard site.
The family began planting grapes on the land in the early 1970s.
The impetus for planting grapes, instead of other agricultural crops,
was because the region boasts the longest growing season for grapes
in the entire state. The cool coastal climate with steady sunshine
allows grapes to grow and ripen perfectly without the worry of
increased sugar levels upon harvest. This is not the only characteristic
that makes the Bien Nacido Vineyard unique though; the original
vine plantings were grown on their own rootstock at UC Davisnot
grafted, which is relatively rare. Today, the viticultural team continues
to honor UC Davis by experimenting with new clones.
Nicholas Miller, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at the Bien
Nacido Vineyard, states that they take pride in their multiple
generations of plantings on the property. We have blocks from the
original planting in 1973 of own rooted vine, such as Pommard and
Martini clones. Later, in 1992, they planted another generation of
Pinot Noir to mostly the Dijon clones, Miller says. Over the last four
decades, the Bien Nacido Vineyard has successfully accumulated and
grown twelve flourishing Pinot Noir clones, with nearly another half
dozen in experimentation right now.
The reason that the Millers have focused so much of their energy
and passion on the Pinot Noir grape variety is mostly because the
Santa Maria Valley possesses impeccable terroir for growing this

www.WineCountryThisMonth.com

DECEMBER 2014
temperamental grape. This appellation is special because of the
transverse mountain ranges that bring in the fog every morning from
the water; this keeps us a true Region 1 [on the Winkler scale]
growing spotideal for Pinot Noir, Miller explains. Furthermore,
Bien Nacido Vineyard is located specifically on the Santa Maria
Bench with a south facing gentle slope that seems to be a sweet spot
to grow Pinot Noir. A sweet spot indeed, as anyone who has tasted
Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir would agreeespecially if the fruit is
grown in the Bien Nacido Vineyard.
One truly beautiful aspect of the Bien Nacido Vineyard is the
collaborative nature between the growers and the winemakers.
Wineries throughout California purchase Pinot Noir grapes from the
Bien Nacido Vineyard, in hopes of making the best Santa Maria Valley
Pinot Noir possible. Two such wineries, Stephen Ross Wine Cellars
and Kynsi Winery, are doing an absolutely fantastic job at turning
Bien Nacido Vineyard fruit into truly remarkable wine.
Stephen Ross Wine Cellars is located in San Luis Obispo and they
make wine from their estate vineyards located in Edna Valley, as well
as source grapes from Edna Valley, Santa Maria Valley, San Luis
Obispo County and Monterey County. They make several single
vineyard Pinot Noirs, one of which is their Bien Nacido Vineyard
bottling. Their newly released 2013 Bien Nacido Pinot Noir is
produced from a single block of Dijon clone 667; this wine is an
excellent expression of its clone and vineyard site. Though the wine
may be young, it is already presenting itself beautifully in the glass.
The 2013 Bien Nacido Pinot Noir from Stephen Ross Wine Cellars
is highly aromatic with lovely aromas of plum, freshly picked wild
raspberry, faint strawberry and a gentle touch of oak. On the palate,
the texture wonderfully conveys the fine sandy loam soils; the body is
smooth and round with a dry and slightly chalky-like finish. This
texture is incredibly pleasurable and complements the fruit flavors on
the palate marvelously. Red plum, fresh raspberry, sweetened
cranberry, and a hint of orange zest dominate the quieter notes of
gentle vanilla, allspice and dried flowers. The wine is balanced,
complex and drinking flawlessly now, which only means that the
wine is going to age gracefully for years to come.
Kynsi Winery is located in Arroyo Grande and purchases fruit
from San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, with a large
portion of their production focused on grapes from the Bien Nacido
Vineyard. Their 2011 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir is a blend of
two blocks from the original planting in the early 1970s, one planted
to the Pommard clone and the other to the Martini cloneboth
clones that produce Old World style Burgundian Pinot Noir.
The 2011 Bien Nacido Pinot Noir from Kynsi Winery is
captivatingly earthy on both the nose and palate. Rustic aromas of
earth and damp forest floor fill the olfactory senses alongside scents
of fresh raspberry and cranberry. On the palate, this full-bodied wine
fills the mouth with luscious, juicy fruit and incredible earthiness.
Cranberry, fresh raspberry, plum and gentle notes of strawberry
provide a fruity backbone to the gripping flavors of savory, rustic
earth and Herbes de Provence. The juiciness of the fruit is mouth
watering on the finish and leaves the palate wanting morea true

testament to how well Pinot Noir made from the original plantings in
the Bien Nacido Vineyard will age when given time in the cellar.
With the holidays fast approaching, these Pinot Noirs would be
excellent choices for the holiday dinner table. Pinot Noir is a varietal
that pairs perfectly with pork prepared in a multitude of ways. The
tender, juicy meat complements the body of this varietal and lends
structure to the texture of the wine. Preparing pork with a plentiful
amount of herbs adds spice and complexity to the wine and enhances
the fruit flavors as well. Pork tenderloin is an excellent preparation
and would be a magical holiday pairing alongside Bien Nacido Pinot
Noir from Stephen Ross Wine Cellars and Kynsi Winery.
Visit Stephen Ross Wine Cellars during the entire month of
December for complimentary wine tasting! For more information
about Stephen Ross Wine Cellars or Kynsi Winery, or to pick up a
bottle of their Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noirs for your holiday
dinner table, visit their websites at www.stephenrosswine.com and

Nacido Vineyard, visit the website at www.biennacidovineyards.com.

Perfect Pairs
Autumnal Food & Wine
Pairing Harvest Stew with
Vina Robles Vineyards & Winerys 2010 Suendero
If you have not heard about Vina Robles Vineyards & Winery in
Paso Robles yet, it is about time you have. Located on the eastside of
Paso Robles, just off of Highway 46 East, Vina Robles boasts an
impressive range of experiences and spaces for all who visit. With
estate vineyards, several levels of tasting options, a fabulous tasting
room and stunning outdoor views, Vina Robles can provide a unique
winery visit for every person who walks through their door.
Vina Robles produces an impressive collection of wine and
certainly knows a thing or two about creating delicious food and
wine pairings. For a nice autumnal theme dinner, Vina Robles has
created a rich harvest stew, paired with their 2010 Suendero. A
deliciously rich blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Petit
Verdot becomes an even more delightful experience when paired with
the hardy harvest stew, full of Brussels sprouts, herbs and coarse
black pepper. This pairing is a fabulous way to warm up during the
oncoming autumn months.
The aromatics of this wine are intense with notes of blueberry,
cedar, spice and licorice. On the palate, one can expect a substantial
amount of weight from these two intensely concentrated varietals;
firm structure on the palate gives way to hints of dark cherry, subtle
herbaceousness and floral characteristics, with rich tannins on the
finish. This decadent wine is great for aging, but complements the
hardy harvest stew so well that it will be nearly impossible to resist
opening and enjoying now!
Although onions tend to be pungent and bitter, when steamed for
a couple of minutes, they loose their bitterness and actually taste
quite sweet. The sweetness from the steamed onions richly enhances
the dark fruit characteristics of the wine and even gives the body a bit
more texture on the palate. Again, Brussels sprouts can also be quite
strong, but when braised on low heat for twenty minutes, they
become soft and full of delicious herbal qualities that taste
exceptionally pleasant with the herbaceousness of the Cabernet
Sauvignon, as well as the gentle floral characteristics of the Petit
Verdot. Of course, beef is an obvious go-to for such a robust blend
and there is no doubt that it suits the 2010 Suendero perfectly in this
pairing. Warm, rich and hardythis pairing is everything you could
ask for as the weather cools down and you find yourself leaning
towards richer, fuller-bodied wines.

The emerging cool-climate Sta. Rita Hills region of Santa Barbara, a short
distance from the Pacific Ocean, has become the de facto region for Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay. And though it is a long distance from the West Texas
Panhandle of William Foleys roots, new roots have been put down by this
entrepreneurial vineyard owner.
William Foley II may have cattle ranching in his blood, but as the
Chairman of the Fidelity Investments Board of Directors, Foley wanted to
create a legacy for his family in the wine world. He purchased a winery in
Santa Ynez, renaming it Lincourt Vineyards, in honor of his two daughters,
Lindsay and Courtney. Then he created Foley Estates Vineyard and Winery
located on nearly 500 acres, of which about 250 are planted with vineyards,
in the Sta. Rita Hills of Santa Barbara. It is here where Foley Estates produces
classic and highly regarded California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though
they do produce Syrah as well. Winemaker Lorna Kreutzs job then is to show
the best expression of the Foley vineyards as possible, working with the fruit
as nominally as possible. She spends much time in the vineyards throughout
the year, then makes daily trips to the vineyard during harvest to determine
when the fruit is ripe and ready to pick.
The latest Foley releases include the 2012 Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay
which spent 20 months in oak, showing the Foley commitment to age worthy
wines. Similarly the 2012 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir spent 18 months in 40%
new French and Hungarian oak barrels. And the great thing about Foley if
youre a Pinot Noir lover is the ability to sample a diversity of Pinot Noir made
with decidedly different clones and providing unique flavor profiles. For

example, the just released 2012 line up includes the Foley 2012 T
Anchor Ranch Pinot Noir which is all about the Pommard clone in
this wine. The 2012 JA Ranch Pinot Noir embraces clones 113 and
115, while the 2012 Bar Lazy S Ranch Pinot Noir uses clone 2A. And
the 2012 Barrel Select Pinot Noir is 100% Massal clone. Each clone
brings a different level of fruit, floral and perfume notes, structure
and ageability, and it is up to you which one you will fall in love with.
When you visit the elegantly appointed Foley Estates tasting room
you will understand even before sampling the wines, of the
commitment to excellence that Foley has. There are three tasting
options including the standard $10 public tasting which includes five
wines. But you can also go for the Private Tasting for $20 with
detailed information about each wine, or upgrade to the Wine and
Cheese Pairing tasting offered Monday through Friday for $30 where
six wines are paired with six different artisanal cheeses. Reservations
are needed for both the private tastings however. On December 7th,
visit Foley Estates to kick off your holiday season with special holiday
treats and case specials. They will feature Sugar Cookies and
Chardonnay. Its a great chance to sample through the alluring Foley
portfolio on their spectacular grounds.
So plan a visit to Foley and get a true grasp of the Sta. Rita Hills.

Local Chef Wins on

Cutthroat Kitchen
SummerWoods Kelly Wangard Wins Popular Food Network Show
SummerWood Winery & Inn Executive Chef Kelly Wangard was
the champion of the Cutthroat Kitchen television show, which aired
on the Food Network on Sunday, October 26. Wangards lively
episode, The Undertater, included challenges in which she
prepared a stuffed baked potato and cooked Korean short ribs. The
final challenge found Chef Kelly sabotaged, playing a memory game
to retrieve needed ingredients to prepare her award-winning
blueberry turnover, all while handcuffed. Throughout the competition, Chef Kelly was sabotaged five times, winning a total of $6,900.
Cutthroat Kitchen is a reality cooking show hosted by celebrity
Alton Brown. Each episode features four chefs faced with three
cooking challenges. At the beginning of the challenge, each chef is
given $25,000 which can be used to sabotage their opponents
and/or use to bid on ingredients to assist in the competition. Each
challenge gives the chefs a dish to create, with 1 minute to retrieve
their ingredients from the pantry. The contestants are then given
thirty minutes to prepare their dish to the highest culinary standard.
Upon completion, a guest judge evaluates each dish and the chef
with the worst dish is eliminated.
SummerWood Executive Chef and Inn Manager Kelly Wangard,
learned of the opportunity after receiving a Facebook message from
the shows casting director, who was searching for a female executive
chef. To prepare for the show, Chef Kelly practiced perfecting simple
dishes in a short amount of time, and also brushed up on her
baking skills. She commented that, it was by far the most challenging, stressful and hilarious cooking experience Ive ever had!
The show has a ton of staff and it seemed to be a well-oiled
machine. I was very impressed with the professionalism and how
they were able to produce 5-6 shows a week.
SummerWood Winery & Inn is located on the westside of Paso
Robles, set on a thirty-six acre estate vineyard. The picturesque
property features picnic areas and sites for special events, including
weddings. The winerys focus is on limited production wines, with
Rhne and Bordeaux-style selections receiving honors from wine
publications and international competitions. The nine-room luxury
guest inn reopened in 2013 after an extensive renovation, featuring
an all-inclusive retreat complete with a wine and appetizers hour,
nightly dessert, turndown service, a complimentary bottle of wine in
each guest room and a farm-fresh cooked to order breakfast.
SummerWood Winery & Inn is dedicated to uncompromised
quality, with an attention to detail that has earned them a worldwide
reputation for excellence. For more information, visit

Mamas Meatball
Fine Italian Restaurant & Catering in San Luis Obispo
By asking locals, one can find out just how good the
food at a local restaurant is. Ask somebody in the
restaurant businessa bartender, a waiter, even a bus
boywhat they think of Mamas Meatball in San Luis
Obispo and their eyes roll towards the heavens as they
breathe a deep sigh; that is how good Mamas Meatball is.
Set in a small courtyard off of one of the towns main
streets in a place called the Old Creamery, Mamas
Meatball is actually divided in two. On the right is the
takeout where people line
up to get their orders of meatballs and more. To the left,
fronted by a huge-trunked tree and a water fountain, is
the intimate restaurant with its mural of the
Mediterranean across the back.
Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef
Nicola Allegretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian
dishesmany of them now available in smaller sizes as well, a bow
to the economy and his customers wishes. Among them are half a
dozen soups, a long list of salads (including grilled salmon and a
refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful antipasto choices,
both hot and cold paninis (including, of course, one made with
meatballs) and more pasta dishes than there is space here to share
(though the Ravioli di Pollo all Vodkahomemade ravioli filled with
chicken and served in a vodka saucecannot go unmentioned).
There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well as
any number of traditional and specialty pizzas, now available in two
sizes, and some far too-tempting desserts.

ts no wonder the people here

call it SLO. No one is in any hurry
in the cafs or on the sidewalks, and
certainly no one is in any rush to
leave. Strangers are genuinely
friendly, always ready to talk about
their favorite hiking trail or
barbecue joint, or to point the way
to the winery with the best Pinot

combination of good stuff that
makes visiting here so nourishing to
the soul.

San Luis Obispos unusual natural

beauty, along with its gentle climate,

first attracted the Spanish padres to
the area in the 1700s. In 1772 they
built the fifth of Californias 21
missions here, on the banks of San
Luis Creek, and named it Mission
San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today,
many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions.

LAETITIA VINEYARD & WINERY

Sparkling Wine, Seven Days A Week
BY JAIME LEWIS

As the holidays approach, Laetitia Vineyard & Winery is

preparing, as always, to sell heaps of their beloved mthode
champenoise sparkling wine. But while sparkling is a perfect choice
for festive occasions, dressed up or dressed down, it pairs well with
nearly everything. So instead of popping a cork on Saturday night
only, why not celebrate the rest of the week, too? After all, Laetitia
makes seven different styles of sparkling wine from their coastal
estate vineyard in the Arroyo Grande Valley appellation.
2009 Laetitia Brut Coquard ($35) At 80% Pinot Noir and 20%
Chardonnay, the Coquard shows aromas of freshly baked
nectarine tart topped with rich mascarpone, candied lime rind
and macadamia nuts. Pair with pumpkin fondue (see recipe).
2010 Cuve M ($35) A 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay, Cuve M offers notes of lemon shortbread, lime
blossom and bread yeast, along with structured apricot jam
nuances. Pair with shrimp jambalaya.
Non-Vintage Brut Cuve ($25) Gala apple, streams of bubbles
and soft melon notes meet to create this festive sparkling wine
comprised of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc,
respectively. Pair with fried chicken.
2011 Brut de Noirs ($30) 90% Martini 13 Pinot Noir and

28

10% Chardonnay (clones 76 & 4). This sparkler shows

luxurious mocha, fresh-baked croissant and dried cherry
nuances. Pair with grilled steak and pepper sandwiches.
2011 Brut Ros ($30) As pretty as it is delicious, this sparkling
Ros offers notes of strawberries, watermelon rind, fresh brioche
and spices. Pair with salad Nioise.
Non-Vintage XD ($25) With just a kiss of sweetness, the XD
opens up with aromas of honeysuckle, strawberry rhubarb pie
and orange zest. Pair with apple crisp.
2011 Brut de Blancs ($30) Grapefruit pith and almonds shine
in this beautifully golden-straw colored sparkling wine
composed of nearly 50/50 Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. Pair
with salmon or tilapia.
Laetitia sparkling wines are available for purchase in their tasting
room, open daily from 11:00 a.m to 5:00p.m. For a festive and
delicious holiday outing, be sure to join Laetitias annual Holiday
Open House when the winery invites guests to sip wine by the
fireplace and get their shopping done early, December 5, 11:00 a.m.
to 7:00 p.m. This year will feature new releases, light snacks, wine
gift packs for sale and live music from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Laetitia is
located at 453 Laetitia Vineyard Drive in Arroyo Grande; for more
information, visit www.laetitiawine.com.

BY CATHY NEUSHUL

While anytime is a good time to partake of the great things We

Olive has to offer, the holiday season provides some unique
opportunities. We Olives Olio Nuovo, an extra virgin olive oil made
from olives taken straight from the orchard to the press at harvest
time. This oil is thick and full of sediment, the flavor is intense, fruity
with a kick on the finish. Olio Nuovo is available for only a few
months.
There are a large number of gift giving options for the holidays as
well. You might want to purchase some of We Olives seasonal
balsamic vinegars, including Mulled Spice Balsamic, Mission Fig
Balsamic, or a pre-made gift basket. The baskets have themes, such as
The Martini Lovers Gift Basket - stocked with a jar of We Olive
Zesty Lemon Martini Olives, You Stuff It Olives, Vermouth BlueCheese Stuffed Olives, Dirty Martini Olive Juice and a We Olive
Dipping Dish.
The Taste of We Olive Gift Basket packed with a jar of We Olive
Black Olive Tapenade, Meyer Lemon Olive Oil, Traditional Aged
Balsamic Vinegar, Arbequina Extra-Virgin Olive Oil and Blood
Orange Olive Oil.
If there isnt a pre-made gift basket that fits your needs, the staff at
We Olive can make a custom basket for you.
In addition to these offerings, We Olive has a wide selection of
gourmet foods available. The store carries mustards, jams, tapenades,
marinades, pestos and finishing sauces. Store manager Jennifer
Holmes says, "The best part about your shopping experience is you
get to try it before you buy it! That's righteverything in our store is
open for sampling." We Olive also sells serving items made from olive
wood, such as hand carved bowls, cheese boards and olive picks.
Youll find that each piece is unique. During the holiday season, We
Olive also carries hand-crafted pottery and festive home decor items.

A visit to We Olive offers education as well as a treat for the taste

buds. Visitors can learn facts about olive oil, including the
distinguishing characteristics of different types of extra virgin olive
oil. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is categorized as delicate, medium
or robust. The delicate EVOO is described as having a smooth,
buttery taste, without bitterness and a peppery finish. The medium
one offers a fruity taste, with a grassy scent, and peppery finish. The
robust version is described as having bold flavor, a balanced
bitterness, and a very prominent peppery finish. There are many
varietals of olives used for olive oil and while many have similar
characteristics they all have unique flavor.
Many people now know about the health benefits of olive oil.
Facts like olive oil naturally containing monounsaturated fatty acids
and antioxidants are widely known. As part of We Olives mission to
educate the public about olive oil, during the month of February We
Olive sponsors fundraisers for the American Heart Association
featuring heart-healthy appetizers made with We Olive products. We
Olive is committed to heart health. One of the best benefits of olive
oil is heart health, said Jennifer. All of our We Olive locations are
proud to participate annually to raise funds for the American Heart
Association. The Paso Robles store will hold events to raise funds in
February 2015. Visit the website www.paso.weolive.com for more
information on upcoming events.

Geralds Chocolates
Delectable Artisan Chocolates in Pismo Beach
SUBMITTED BY GERALD REED

A little bit of history for chocolate lovers. Gerald's Chocolates

kitchen is located among one of California's premier regions for
the production of fine wines, olives and other culinary delights.
The kitchen and retail location is owned and operated by Gerald
and Beatrice Reed who continue to produce fine chocolate candies
made from recipes in the tradition of days gone by when
chocolate lovers with discriminating tastes demanded only the
finest. Some still do. We at Gerald's Chocolates are dedicated to
serving and deserving this clientele.
Our history is recounted in this way: during the early years of
the last century, Los Angeles was home to a few world renowned
candy makers who were dedicated to making superb chocolates.
Around 1915, one of these candy makers arrived from overseas
and established his candy factory in downtown Los Angeles on
Beverly Boulevard, and eventually operated thirteen retail outlets
in the greater Los Angeles area. He was the grandson of an
established candy maker in Great Britain. Their family recipes
had been perfected over three generations. In 1969, it was
Gerald's good fortune to have met and to have been personally
trained under the direction of this master of the art. At this time,

Gerald also acquired the right to use the recipes and methods for
making chocolate candies as had first been copyrighted in 1927,
and which Gerald's Chocolates still uses today. Each candy is
faithfully made according to the original methods.
Over the decades, the independent producers of fine
chocolates disappeared in favor of producers, to their credit, who
introduced chocolates to the mass market at affordable prices.
Competition brought temptation to compromise the product; lost
was the aromatic fineness and tasteful sensation of candies that
can only be made from scratch with fresh nut meats, dairy
products and coated with the purest chocolate of highest quality
available. Gerald's Chocolates is among the few remaining
independent artisans in California who have held to the tradition
and who still offer finer assortments of soft crme centers, truffles,
whip cream fudges, soft caramels plain and seasalted, and a
variety of English toffees, almond butter toffees and nut brittles.
The chocolates are still hand-dipped and add 25% more chocolate
to the center pieces than machine coated candies.
As with the local producers of fine wines and olive oils,
Gerald's Chocolates' tap roots run long and deep. We proudly
continue the tradition we began in 1969 when we met and
learned from one of the grandest candy makers of his time. Since
then, candy lovers have enjoyed the result. Drop by our kitchen
and store location in Pismo Beach. Always free samples. Our
hours are from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through
Saturday. Closed most Sundays. Store hours are extended during
the holidays. Gerald's Chocolates may be ordered for special
events and by wholesale customers. We also offer an independent
dealership program for qualified persons who may desire to own
and operate their own Gerald's Chocolates retail outlet.
To find our Pismo Beach kitchen and store location, just exit
the 101 freeway onto the Pismo Beach or Price Street offramp and
we are located in the Landmark Hotel at 701 Price Street.

winding roads of Tepesquet and

Foxen Canyon will lead you to worldclass wineries by way of sprawling

vineyards and rolling hills. In the

more northern region of the appella-

due to the maritime climate. This

A Walk Around Tasting is a

combination of a tour and a tasting.
Your host brings along several
bottles of wine on your tour, and
may take you to a garden area of
the winery to pour the first round.
Then you move to another place
within the winery to sample the
next wine. This experience
continues until all the wines are
tasted.

Barrel Tasting

www.WineCountryThisMonth.com

Another popular tasting experience that can be part of a tour or a

Walk Around is a Barrel Tasting.
Your guide takes a wine thief, a
special siphon placed into a hole in
the top of a barrel to extract tasting
samples of a maturing wine. The
sample allows you to taste what the
wine is like in the middle of developing its full potential.

Why make an appointment?

A Sit Down Tasting usually

requires an appointment, and there
may be a slightly higher fee than a
wine bar fee. Seated in an elegant
room, you are poured several wines
by your winery host. Expect your
host to describe the unique characteristics of each wine and how it
was made.

Walk Around Tasting

The most common tasting experience is a Wine Bar Tasting. You

step up to the bar where typically a
list of wines being poured is
displayed. Expect to pay a tasting
fee between $10-$40. Some tasting
bars will offer you the option to
taste a library or reserve wine.
Exercising this option increases the
fee, but will allow you to taste very
unique, old or rare wines.

Sit Down Tasting

Wine Bar Tasting

Some wineries are so small that

they need to know when you are
coming so someone will be there
to greet you. Others have sit-down
tastings that start and end at
specific times. Its always a good
idea to schedule your appointments well in advance.

Arcadian Winery
Like most passionate wine enthusiasts, a great epiphany led Joe
Davis to his calling as a winemaker...
While in college on an athletic scholarship, Davis, the son of a
Monterey California fishing family, took a job in a wine shop. One
Christmas, a good customer brought Joe a gift of a 1978 Clos de la
Roche Grand Cru, Domaine Dujac. One sip and he was completely
taken with the flavor and sheer deliciousness of the wine.To have
winemaking as a life pursuit and to make wine like this, he
thought, would be the most wonderful thing in the world. And so
his quest began.
Joe voraciously read everything he could find that was wine
related and enrolled in UC Davis graduate program. In 1985, he
met and went to work for Dan Lee of Morgan Winery. While
primarily making award-winning Chardonnay, Davis never lost
sight of that fantastic Burgundy and in 1990, he presented a classic
Pinot Noir production plan to Morgan Winery.
His original plan included techniques Davis applies today to his
Arcadian Winery Pinot Noir; whole cluster fruit is hand picked and
is sorted early in the day to ensure chilled fruit. Obviously, not all
vintages are the same, the recipe might change, but by using these
methods consistently, I impart a common thread among my wines
that translates into my style says Davis. He employed these procedures for all of his Pinot Noir vintages (1986-1994) at Morgan and
then took this knowledge to a general managers position at
Bernardus Winery. Finally, in 1996, on his own and ready to fulfill
his dream, he released Arcadian Winerys first vintage of Chardonnay
to rave reviews.
Joe realized another dream in late November 2011 when he
opened his long-anticipated tasting room in the Lompoc Wine
Ghetto. Arcadian Winery tasting room is open Thursday through
Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information go to

Scott Cellars

Creating a Sangiovese House:

Scott Cellars Foray
into Uncharted Territory
SUBMiTTED

Scott Cellars did not set out to become a Sangiovese house, it just
happened. It was more of an evolution. Owner and winemaker
Peter Scott Fraser started making the usual Chardonnay, Pinot Noir,
Syrah etc. However, in 2007 his wife Jennifer suggested Sangiovese
after his Italian heritage. With that first vintage, it became obvious
that Fraser had a knack for the challenging varietal. One vineyard
slowly expanded to six and now the hunt is on to find more and
better vineyards. In 2012, Fraser decided to devote his winery to
crafting great Sangiovese from California.
Fraser quickly discovered how difficult it was to grow Sangiovese
well. In many respects, Fraser extols, It is just as challenging to
grow and make as Pinot Noir. It is a thin skin, finicky grape that
growers tend to put in overly hot climates. Through his close work
with the varietal, Fraser has discovered that it shows tremendous
character variation from vineyard to vineyard. This led him to name
his wines after the soil and not the vineyard. I name these wines
after the predominant soil characteristic of the vineyard, not the
owners name.
Sand Dune, West Slope, Rolling Loam and Flatlands all refer to the
distinct vineyards used to create both
vineyard designate wines and Reserve style
blends. As each vineyard brings its own voice

to the wine, solo and a capella versions are
created using individual components to create
wines of incredible depth and complexity.

Imagine a tasting room which houses two of the most well-known

small lot winemakers in Santa Barbara. Imagine no morethe
Loring/Cargasacchi tasting room is a reality! Winemaker Peter
Cargasacchi has joined forces with the brother and sister winemaking
team, Brian and Kimberly Loring, to create one of the most indemand tasting experiences in the region. This humble tasting room
is the perfect location for some killer juice; with plenty of space
inside featuring two bars and a picnic area outside, the tasting room
has something for everyone!
At the tasting room, guests can taste through Lorings Pinot Noir,
Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvdre, Grenache and a few
blends. Loring currently produces twenty-three wines with prices
ranging from $24 to $99, deriving fruit from Paso Robles, Monterey,
Sonoma and Santa Barbara. These wines aren't overloaded with
tannin, so theyre ready to drink right away, Loring says. The
awesome structure of each wine comes from the acidity, which keeps
the wine bright and fresh despite their richness. His philosophy on
making wine is that the fruit is all that matters. What happens in the
vineyard determines the quality of the wineI cant make it better
I can only screw it up, Loring states. Perhaps this is why he is
extremely picky when choosing vineyards to buy grapes from. Not
only am I looking for the right soil, microclimate and clones, Im also
looking for a grower with the same passion and dedication to
producing great wine that I have. In other words, a total Pinot freak!
In keeping with this passion for Pinot Noir, Cargasacchi wines
offered in the tasting room include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot
Grigio, late harvest Pinot Grigio and Syrah, under the Point
Concepcin label. But it is Peters out of the way Jalama Vineyard that
proves most intriguing. The area is the bed of an ancient sea so
there are large deposits of diatomaceous earth in and around the
vineyards, Cargasacchi says. Farming the grapes here for his Pinot
Noir is challenging because the areas weather is more extreme.
Where a vine grows and what type of soil its planted on and its
exposure matters a lot, but good farming and getting proper ripeness
is the real essence of making good wine, he says. You can have the
most perfect spot for a vine on earth but if you don't take care of it,
you can forget about making decent wine. With this kind of focus,
both Loring and Cargasacchi wines are incredibly enjoyable.
The Loring Wine Company and Cargasacchi tasting room is
located at 420 East Hwy 246, just off Highway 101 in Buellton. They
are open Thursday through Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

WINEMAKER PROFILE

BRIAN LORING
Loring Wine Company
By MELiSSA vogT

At Loring Wine Company, Winemaker Brian Loring has a simple

and straightforward philosophy: terroir is everything. From his
humble beginnings as a wine shop salesman, Brian spent his time
getting to know both domestic and international wines. It was during
his employment at the wine shop that he was significantly influenced
by his bosss taste in red Burgundymade from the illustrious and
coveted Pinot Noir grape variety. He fell in love with Pinot Noir from
famous French producers such as Domaine Dujac and Henri Jayer.
From that point on, Brian was continually on the search for domestic
Pinot Noir that exhibited the same quality and expressiveness of
French red Burgundy certainly not an easy task.
Not soon after, Brian discovered the beautiful expressions of Pinot
Noir from wineries such as Calera Wine Company in Hollister and
Cottonwood Canyon Vineyard and Winery in Santa Maria. After
falling completely in love with Cottonwoods 1990 Santa Maria Pinot
Noir, he knew he was ready to get into the wine business from the
production side. He began working at Cottonwood in 1997
checking sugar levels, picking, crushing, punching down the grapes
during fermentation, pressing the wine and finally, filling the barrels.
At this point, his obsession for Pinot Noir grew even more. After
fifteen years in the industry in various capacities, Brian was ready to
open his own wineryLoring Wine Company.
The first vintage produced under the Loring Wine Company name
was in 1999. From the very beginning, Brians focus has been on
purchasing high quality grapes from various vineyards with unique
terroir across the California appellations. He trusts the farmers and
viticulturists that tend to the vines, and purchases grapes from
vineyards as far north as Sonoma Countys Russian River Valley and
as far south as Santa Barbara Countys Sta. Rita Hills. With such
varied terroir as a result of microclimates, soil complexity, variable
elevations and unique sun exposures, Brian is able to produce a wide
range of stunning and delicious Pinot Noir; each bottle from each
vineyard is unique, though still expresses the finesse and complexity
of great red Burgundy that Brian originally fell in love with. His
passion for single vineyard, terroir-driven Pinot Noir is not unlike his
winemaking counterparts in Francemuch of their emphasis is on
the land as well. As Brian and many other winemakers will say, it is
first and foremost the vineyards that make the wine. He holds true to
this philosophy and the result is truly elegant and enjoyable Pinot
Noir.

Sometimes its good to experiment. For over 40 years, Zaca Mesa

Winery has been a place of experimentation and discoverya local
institution that has given rise to some of the most renowned
winemakers and wines in our region. Along Foxen Canyon Road, the
wine lover will find Zaca Mesa Winery, producing estate grown wines
since 1973.
Started by a group of six friends, the winerys history is one of trial
and error, planting the first Syrah grapes in Santa Barbara County in
1978. After several years of experimentation, it was determined that
Rhne varietals grew best (Syrah, Grenache, Mourvdre, Viognier,
Grenache Blanc and Roussanne). The winery now has 10 clones of
Syrah and the most high-density vineyard acreage in the county. In
addition to serving the likes of President Clinton and Ronald Reagan,
the winery was also the first Central Coast winery to appear in Wine
Spectators Top 10 back in 1995.
In addition to their many accolades, Zaca Mesa prides itself on
producing wine that is estate grown and bottled. With 200 acres of
vineyards, all of their Rhne varietals are farmed and nurtured on
their 750-acre estate, never leaving the winery until after bottling.
Estate grown and bottled is a regulated term, meaning any wine that
carries the term is grown on the property, made at the winery and

bottled on site. Today, less than 1% of all wine is designated as estate

grown and bottled.
With their complex mineral driven style and bright natural acidity,
Zaca Mesas wines are easy to pair with your favorite dish or cheese.
Hosting several farm-to-table dinners annually, the winery
encourages the union of food and wine, from suggested pairings on
their website to tasty recipes in their newsletter. Top sellers include
their 2010 Syrah, paired with rosemary lamb, or their 2012 Viognier,
paired with sea bass.
The winery offers several wine club options, including their Black
Bear Society, a Reserve Club of limited-production wines, coined after
spotting a hungry black bear munching on Syrah grapes. Popular
with animals and adults alike, the wine club is a popular choice for
anyone interested in the highly sought after Black Bear Block Syrah,
sourced from the original 1978 Syrah grapes.
Known as Zaca University, Zaca Mesa believes that education is
power, with regular wine education events and tours by
appointment. An industry pioneer, the winery is the perfect place for
winemakers and wine enthusiasts to harvest knowledge.

FIGUEROA MTN

J Ludlow Vineyard, up in the idyllic Los Olivos area, is the home

away from home for owners Allan and Jane Jones. Originally from
Cardiff, Wales, the couple fell in love with the Santa Ynez Valley
during one of their many trips to California. Stumbling upon a
beautiful ranch in Happy Canyon, they quickly developed an interest
in wine, purchasing Westerly Stud Farm in 2007. Keeping
production small, their dedication to their craft is evident by their
numerous awards and recent accolades.
Their Los Olivos tasting room, opened April 2014, is a new player
in the area, producing delightful and memorable wines unique to the
Los Olivos region. With high ceilings, big windows, and a welcoming
atmosphere, it is the perfect place to grab a glass of their awardwinning wine. Sourcing most of their grapes from Camp 4 and La
Presa Vineyards in the Valley, the winery strives to keep things local and
family-run, dedicated to great taste and a sheer enjoyment of wine.
In the near future, J Ludlow plans to plant more than 80 acres of
their grapes, focusing predominately on Bordeaux varietals of Merlot,

Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. When choosing varietals,

they wanted wines that would highlight varietals uncommon to the
region, while sharing their passion for French wines. Though the
couples background is in coffee production, they have successfully
transformed a new agricultural product blending their taste and
passion for the region.
Family ties inspire each varietal, including their wine club aptly
entitled The Old Ludlowdian. One of their most popular sellers,
Kemsley Cabernet Sauvignon is named after Allan, who holds the
prestigious title of Lord Kemsley in Great Britain. The winery itself is
named after the street Allan was born on. And of course, the 2008
Jane Merlot, a gold medal winner at the Los Angeles International
Wine Competition, is named after his beloved wife. Other unique
wine club highlights include a Pinot Grigio and Primitivo Rose,
perfect for any summer picnic.
Heavily involved in charity, the Jigsaw logo signifies their
commitment to fighting autism and Aspergers worldwide (a common
symbol in healthcare and popular culture). In their native country,
Allan and Jane Jones own Beechwood College, a specialist residential
college for students dealing with these very conditions. They also
work closely with the Koegel Autism Center at UC Santa Barbara and
make a donation to the center for every botle of Sauvignon Blanc sold
in the tasting room.

Zinke Wine Co.

Zinke Wine Co. is the realization of a dream between husband

and wife, Michael and Ashley Zinke. They specialize in single
vineyard, Rhne varietal wines, sourced from the Central Coast.
While influenced by tradition, we are paving our own path in
the vineyard and the cellar in pursuit of the unattainable
perfection, says Ashley. With fruit sourced from the grand crus
of the Central Coast, our wine practically makes itself.
Optimal ripeness, hand sorted fruit, small lot fermentations,
stem inclusion, co-ferments, and the proper formula of oak and
time embody their winemaking philosophy. Although
influenced by those before us, our wines never imitate, and
always inspire. Our wines harmonize with all genres of food, but

the ideal pairing is with friends, family, music and laughter. We

hope you have as much fun enjoying our wines, as we do
making them.

LOS OLIVOS
Wine Tasting in

Larner Vineyard & Winery

BY MICHAEL CERVIN

Our wines are driven by the soil they are derived from, says
winemaker Michael Larner. As a geologist I feel that our soils speak
louder than what I could craft in the winery, however as a winemaker
my influence is more European having worked in both France and
Italy, I strive for balance and harmony coupled with age-worthy
quality wines.
Every wine made locally inspires all of us to greatness, says
Larner. As a founder of the new Ballard Canyon AVA in Santa Barbara
County, Larner and his family-run winery is home to their 34-acre
estate planted to Syrah, Grenache, Mourvdre and Viognier. As a
small tribute to their Italian heritage, the Larners also have one block

of Malvasia Bianca. But it is Syrah where Larner shines. We feel

Syrah is our champion as it is best suited on our estate and represents
the AVA as the strongest varietal, he says. We are special because of
our natural acidity at harvest, promoting longevity and balance. By
selling their grapes before they ever made wine they helped establish
the vineyards reputation for quality. In a sense we did things
backwards, Larner admits but he strongly believes that what sets
them apart is his strict growers philosophy that distinguishes wines
made from those grapes. We have farmed grapes for dozens of
excellent, boutique winemakers over the past decade, many of whom
use the Larner Vineyard designation on their wines, Michael says.
And though he uses much of the fruit for his own wines, his grapes
are still in high demand.
Larner is a small lot producer and their tasting room is open
Thursday through Monday, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is
located at 2900 Grand Ave., Los Olivos. Contact them directly at

Wine Tasting in

Qup Winery Quality California Roots

BY BETHANY RHINE

Qup winery reflects the California spirit as founder Robert Neil

Lindquist (Bob) moved to California with his family when he was
young and since then has embraced everything Californian from the
music scene to becoming a devoted Dodger fan.
In 1975, Bobs pursuit for a career in the wine industry took flight.
It wasnt long until he knew he was destined to be a part of Santa
Barbaras Wine Country and in 1979 it became a reality. His path led
him to learn the art of winemaking under Jim Clendenen and in
1982 Qup was born via Chardonnay, Syrah and Ros of Pinot Noir.
As the years progressed Bobs passion for Syrah and other Rhne
varieties outshined the rest, but he has kept up with the crafting of
his exceptionally popular Chardonnay.

A Dedication to Biodynamic Practices

In 2002, Bob and his wife, Louisa Sawyer Lindquist who is also a
devoted winemaker, found their opportunity to expand into San Luis
Obispo Wine Country with the purchase of 80 acres in Edna Valley.
From day one the couple was committed to sustainable farming and
embarked on a journey of employing biodynamic practices that treat
the vineyard as a self-contained, living organism.
In 2005, the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard was planted with Pinot
Noir, Marsanne, Syrah, Grenache, Tempranillo and Albario and in

2008 yielded its first productive crop.

In 2009, the vineyard earned two certifications formalizing Bob
and Louisas commitment to biodynamic farming practices: Demeter
Biodynamic and Stellar Organic.

Why Qup?
Bob named his winery after the Chumash Indian word for
California poppy to honor the indigenous people of the Central
Coast and Channel Islands. Bob decided to add an accent to the final
syllable to designate the pronunciation (kyoo-pay') as several sounds
of the Chumash language have been obscured with time.

The Wines
Qup specializes in Rhone-style wines sourced from three
vineyards: Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria, Sawyer Lindquist
Vineyard in Edna Valley and Ibarra-Young Vineyard in Los Olivos.

Where to Taste
The Qup tasting room is located in the picturesque downtown
Los Olivos at 2963 Grand Avenue. They offer two flights to choose
from: a Classic and a Reserve. The tasting room is open seven days a
week from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Reservations are required for groups

SOLVANG
Wine Tasting in

Wandering Dog Wine Bar

BY CATHY NEUSHAL

Wandering Dog Wine Bar in Solvang is the right place to go if

you are looking for a unique wine tasting experience. You will find a
diverse mix of unique boutique wines. Charles and Jody Williams,
owners with Jack and Susan Williams, palate-pick their wines,
looking for the best wine produced by up-and-coming winemakers.
My husband and I taste every wine that we bring on and do not
buy based on price point or scores, said Jody Williams. She added,
We love all kinds of eclectic wines that perhaps some people
wouldnt be in to. How sad would that be if we never tried them just
because they dont get mainstream press? Some of the Williams
favorites include a Viognier and Syrah made under the Carucci label,
which Williams described as beautifully done winesmade by

Kyle Knapp at Press Gang Cellars, and the products of winemaker

Clarissa Nagy, head Winemaker at Riverbench and her label Nagy 2.
Its fun to see these boutique producers grow. Many times, we are
a first big account for them. They go on to open their own tasting
rooms and their brands grow. Then, the next crop of young
winemakers are poised to take their places, Williams said.
When visiting the wine bar, you can also taste of some of the best
imported beer from Germany, Scotland, Belgium, Sweden, Iceland
and France. The wine bar also features beers produced in the San
Diego area. Williams said, They have great beer down there!
The Wandering Dog has blind tastings every Thursday from
4:00 to 7:00 p.m.; people try to identify the varietal, the region it
comes from, the price point and alcohol level. They also offer wine
classes the first Friday of every month. Visit Wandering Dog Wine

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY | WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

DECEMBER 2014

TASTING ROOM OF THE WEEK:

BYRON WINES
A pioneer is lost until he's found;
a visionary is wrong until he's right.
BYRACHEL HOMMEL

Byron Winery, founded in 1984, is the product of that vision.

Founded by Ken Brown, the winery has been producing spectacular
Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in Santa Barbara County for over thirty
years. The Santa Maria BenchByrons homeis less than twenty
miles from the Pacific Ocean, allowing for cool ocean air to sweep
through. Their prime location offers the perfect climate for their
award-winning wines, with a cozy tasting room in the heart of
downtown Los Olivos.
In 1964, Uriel Nielson planted Santa Barbara County's first
commercial vineyard along the windswept Santa Maria Bench. Four
decades later, guests are still enjoying Byron wines. Most of Byrons
current bottlings are grown on the estate, and are full of character
and distinction. The flavors, textures, and scents of Byron wines are
due in part to the aromatics of the growing region. Along with the
estate Nielson Vineyard, Byron continues to seek out the best
vineyards within Santa Barbara County to source fruit and showcase
as vineyard designate wines.
Due to the long cool growing season, Santa Maria Valley wines are
known to have a lot of natural acidity and are very expressive on the
nose and the palate. Coined as experimentally quirky, Byron is
unique in that it is able to ferment in small tanks, offering more room
for trial and error. When Jonathan Nagy took over winemaking
duties in 2003, he continued this ethos, utilizing small-lot, hands-on
winemaking techniques including intensive grape sorting, native
yeast fermentations, and lot separation from harvest through
winemaking.
Environmentally designed, Byrons innovative facility allows their
winemaking team to use Old World, natural techniques to gently
move the grapes, juice and winecreating wines that are balanced
and true to nature. Top wines include their Drizzle Barrel Pinot Noir,
Monument Pinot Noir and Nielsons Chardonnay. For that special
someone, savor the Byron 100 Pinot Noir, or perhaps a Circa 64
Wine Club membership.
This holiday season, Byron invites guests to their Holiday Open
House on December 6th from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., which will
coincide with the Los Olivos Olde Fashioned Christmas. Tasting
flights will range from $10-$20 and complimentary light bites will be
served. The tasting room will have extended hours until 7:00 p.m.
that day, in addition to offering special Wine Holiday Packs available
for sale until the end of the month. Make sure to stop by and
experience the memorable wines of Byron this winter season, and
year round!

Wine Tasting in

Panaro Brothers Winery

BY MELISSA VOGT

The Italian Panaro family has a longstanding history of making

wine in California. As fifth generation Italian American winemakers,
Panaro Brothers Winery has ample knowledge about handcrafting
California wines in an authentic and traditional Italian style. Making
wine the Old World way refers to the focus on terroirallowing the
fruit and qualities of the vineyard to be expressed in the glass; this is
made possible by gentle oaking, or oftentimes the use of strictly
neutral oak, and incredible attention to detail and quality in the
vineyards. The result is flawless, delicious single varietal and blended
wines that are sure to please every palate
126 s preference.
