KSRTC in its effort to support the overall Public Transport Strategy has intended to implement
the Intelligent Transport System, to deliver a public transport network capable of delivering
high quality services in pursuit of providing a sustainable public transport network to meet the
aspirations of the travelling public in the future and to address the poor availability and
difficulty in the use of information.
Background
Client Profile
Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation or KSRTC is a state-owned road transportation
company in Karnataka. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation was established in
August,1961 under the provisions of Road Transport Corporation Act 1950 with the objective
of providing adequate, efficient, economic and properly coordinated road transport services.
In this endeavor, the KSRTC has positioned itself with a name for reliability and safety.
CMC has implemented a Turnkey Project of Intelligent Transportation System for Karnataka
State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Mysore City for 500 Buses. The project is funded by
World Bank and the project was awarded by KSRTC through International Bidding.
The solution implemented by CMC meets the following requirements of KSRTC:
Make public transport more accessible and encourage increased use of public transport
Provide effective, safe, environmental and commuter friendly solutions to the commuters
Inform commuters about the bus routes and arrival timings of buses at the bus
stops/terminals and notify commuters about schedule changes through appropriate
Display systems
Instant access to information related to bus schedules, ETA, ETD, annunciating bus stop
names etc at bus stops, bus terminals and within the buses and through SMS, Internet
and IVRS
Facilitating Aids in case of vehicle break downs /Accidents and other incidents
Track and monitor the movement of buses and drivers on real time basis
Optimize operations, improve fleet utilization, schedules, and vehicle availability with
accurate information
Obtaining on-line real time information on bus operations and management for effective
management through a Decision Support system by collecting, collating and storing
information on real time basis about the transport system and its effectiveness
Opportunities
The business requirement was mainly to monitor the movement of the Buses running on
various routes. Besides Online Tracking of movement of buses the requirement included
Instant access to information related to bus schedules, ETA, ETD, annunciating bus stop names
etc at bus stops, bus terminals and within the buses and through SMS, Internet and IVRS as
well as replay of location, exception generation due to unauthorized stoppages of Buses,
route deviation from authorised routes and also speed violation etc.

Solution Proposed
Design, Fabrication, Supply, Installation & Commissioning of GPS based Bus Controller
Units which :
Generate position data and send to the data centre ( Vehicle Hardware)
Store and Display the Bus Route on the Bus Display Unit. The Bus Route information is
Display and announce the next approaching Bus stop on the PIS display unit inside the
bus

Technical Support for Maintenance , fault diagnosis for Hardware and Software
Periodic reporting of the Driver Behaviour such as over speeding, harsh breaking,
overstepping etc.
Solution Architecture
Solution provided is a 3-Tier Architecture, Web-based scalable solution and offers information
service for logistics visibility and collaboration involving GIS/GPS and mobile communications
like GSM/GPRS. The ITS System Overview is depicted in the following figure:
Hardware Architecture
Instant access to information related to bus schedules, ETA, ETD, annunciating bus stop
names, fare details, etc are available at bus stops, bus terminals and within the buses and
through SMS, Internet and IVRS. The solution integrates a CTI (Computer Telephony Interface)
that transforms the callers telephone into a terminal capable of directly accessing information
and services. Customer calls on a telephone number; the IVR System answers the call, and
prompts for instructions via spoken voice menus. In response to the caller's requests, the
database is fetched for suitable information and the result is presented to the caller in voice
format.
Major Functionalities
A comprehensive fleet management system for maintenance of the fleet like alerts on
preventive maintenance, breakdown, predictive, renewal, etc.
PIS Display for ETA / ETD at 150 Bus Shelters / Bus Terminal Platforms
Management Information System (MIS) for bus operations reporting and performance
assessment
Business Impact
This system has started giving following benefit to the customers:
