generalinfluencetocontrol.Atthebeginningofthegameyouwillonlybeableto
startwith20mindpointsworthofcharacters,sinceyouwillonlyhaveyourgeneral
influencetocontrolthemwith.

DirectInfluence

Underneaththewhiteheadshowingthemindofeachcharacterisablackhandwith
awhitenumberinit.Thenumberintheblackhandisthecharactersdirectinfluence.
Directinfluenceisameasureofhowwellacharactercancontrolothercharacters.
Characterscontrolledbyothercharactersarecalledfollowers.

Foreachpointofdirectinfluence,acharactercanhaveafollowerwithonepointof
mind.Soacharacterwithadirectinfluenceofthreecancontrolafollowerwitha
mindofuptothree.

Therearesomerestrictionsonfollowers.Characterscanhavemorethanone
follower,butafollowercanonlyfollowonecharacter.Thatis,youcannotusethe

directinfluenceoftwodifferentcharacterstocontrolonefollower.Alloftheinfluence
controllingacharactermustcomefromthesameplace,eithergeneralinfluenceor
onecharacter'sdirectinfluence.Also,followersmaynothavefollowers.

SkillsandRace

Eachcardhastwoprominentsections.Oneisthecharacter'spictureonthetophalf
ofthecard,andtheotherisaboxedoffsectionoftextonthebottomhalfofthecard.
Betweenthesetwoboxes,ontherightsideofthecard,isashortpieceoftext.This
describestheskillsthecharacterhas,andwhatracethecharacterisfrom.Onother
cards,textinthissamespacewillusuallyidentifywhattypeofcarditis.

Thefirstword(s)aretheskillsthecharacterhas.Somecardsplayedinthegamewill
refertotheseskills.Somecanonlybeplayedoncharacterswithacertainskill,and
somejustrequireacharacterofthatskilltobepresent.ThefiveskillsareDiplomat,
Ranger,Sage,Scout,andWarrior.Acharactermayhavemorethanoneskill,in
whichcasetheywillbeseparatedbyslashes.

Thelastwordwillbethecharacter'srace.Somecardsmodifyallcharactersofa
particularrace,andothersareeasiertoplayifyouareusingacharacterwiththe
rightrace.TheracesareDnadan,Dwarf,Elf,Man,andWizard.

ProwessandBody

Atthebottomleftofeachcharactercardisasmallshield.Intheshieldaretwo
numbersseparatedwithaslash.Thefirstnumberisthecharacter'sprowess,the
secondisthecharacter'sbody.

Prowessandbodyareexplainedindetailundercombatinthesectiononthe
movement/hazardphase(seep.XXifyoucannotwaittofindout).Prowess
representshowskilledacharacterisincombat.Thehigheracharacter'sprowessis,
thelesslikelyheistogetwounded.Bodyrepresentshowtoughandresilientthe
characteris.Thehigheracharacter'sbodyis,thelessRelyheistodiewhen
woundedincombat.

Corruption

inthebottomrightcornerofeachcharactercardisanoctogon,smallerthanthe
marshallingpointoctogonintheupperleft.Mostcharactershaveasmallburning
eyeinthesmalleroctogon,butsomehaveacorruptionmodifier(like+2or1).

Powercorrupts,especiallyinMiddleearth.Asyourcharactersacquiremore

powerfulitems,they

willbecomemoresusceptibletocorruption.Atcertainpointsinthegameyour
characterswillhavetomakedicerollscalledcorruptionchecks.Whenevera
charactermakesacorruptioncheck,modifytherollbyhiscorruptionmodifier.In
general,characterswithapositivecorruptionmodifierarehardertocorrupt,and
characterswithanegativeoneareeasiertocorrupt.Corruptionandcorruption
checksareexplainedinmoredetailonp.XX.

TextBox

Thelastthingtonoteabouteachcharactercardisthetextbox,whichtakesupmost
ofthelowerhalfoffthecharactercards.Thisexplainsanyspecialabilitiesthat
characterhas.

Therearetwoimportantthingsinthetextbox.Thefirstwordinthetextboxwillbe
theword"Unique."Charactersareuniquecards.Therecanonlybeoneofeach
uniquecharacterinplayatanytime.Ifyouropponenthasthecharacterout,you
cannotplayhim.

EachcharacteralsohasaHomeSite.Thisisquitesimplywherethecharacter
comesfrom.Youcanstartwithanycharactersyouwantto,exceptWizards.But
onceplaybegins,youcanonlybringinacharacterathisHomeSiteorataHaven
site.ThisisexplainedinmoredetailunderPlayingaCharacterinthesectiononthe
organizationphase(seep.XX).

Eachcharacteralsohasflavortext.Thisisthetextinquotationsanditalics,and
showsyouhowthecharacterisconnectedtoMiddleearthandtheworksofJ.R.R.
Tolkien.Thistexthasnoeffectontheplayofthegame.

Somecharactersmayhaveothertext.Thisistodescribecertainspecialabilitiesthat
charactershave,aboveandbeyondthenorm.Somerestatethingsthatare
representedelsewhereonthecard,likethecorruptionmodifier.Thesearesimply
clarifications,andarenotcumulativewiththeotherpartsofthecard.Amoredetailed

Wizards

Wizardsareaspecialtypeofcharacter.Theyrepresentyouinthegame.Youare
playingthepartofoneofthefiveWizardssenttoMiddleearthtoorganizethefree
peoplesagainstSauron.

TherearefiveWizardsinthegame:Alatar,Gandalf,Pallando,Radagast,and
Saruman.Theyeachhaveadifferentcolorbackground,ratherthanthelightblue
othercharactershave.Somehaveabluebackgroundsimilartoothercharacters.

Wizardshavesomedifferentrulesthanothercharacters.Youmaynotstartthe
gamewithyourWizardinplay.Youmustdrawhimfromyourdeckandbringhimin
toplayduringthegame.YoumayalsoonlybringhimintoplayatRivendellorhis
HomeSite,ratherthananyHavenlikeanormalcharacter.Finally,youcanonlyhave
oneWizardinplay.

PlayingyourWizardiscalledrevealingyourself,andcanberisky.IfyourWizardis
killedorfailsacorruptioncheck,thenyoulosethegame.Itdoesnotmatterhow
manymarshallingpointsyouhave,youstilllosethegame.

ThisisbalancedbythepoweroftheWizardcharacters.Eachhasfourskills,more
thananyothercharacter.EachWizardalsohastendirectinfluence,allowingyouto
controlextracharacters.Also,Wizardshavenomindstat.Youwillnothavetouse
anyofyourinfluencetocontrolyourWizard.

SiteCards

Everythinginthegameiscenteredaroundthecharacters.Butthecharactersmust
movefromsitetositetodothingsinthegame.

EachsitecardrepresentsadifferentplaceinMiddleearth.Theyareorganized
geographicallyintofourgroups,oneforeachofthefourHavensinMiddleearth.
Acrossthetopofeachsite

cardisthenameofthesite.

Unlikeothercardsinthegame,youdonothavetorandomlydrawsitecards.Site
cardsarekeptinaseparatedeckcalledthelocationdeck.Whenyouwanttogotoa
site,youcanlookthroughyourlocationdeckandpickouttheoneyouwant.

SiteType

Inthetopleftcomerofeachsitecardisasymbolforthesitetype.Thesitetype
representshowdangerousorbeneficialasiteistoyourcharacters.Thesitetypes
are,fromsafesttomostdangerous:Havens,Freeholds,Borderholds,Ruins&
Lairs,Shadowholds,andDarkholds.Somecreaturescanonlybeplayedatcertain
sites.

SitePath

Eachcardhasasitepath.Thisisaseriesofsymbolsrepresentingthedifferent
terrainyouwilltravelthroughtogettothesite.

Mostsiteshavethesitepathlistedverticallyalongtheleftsideofthecard.The
exceptionisHavencards.EachHavenliststwositepaths,oneforeachoftheother
Havensyoucanreachfromthere.Thesesitepathsarelistedinthetextboxbelow
thesite'spicture.

Thesitepathdoesnotdirectmovement,itisusedtodeterminewhichcreaturescan
beplayedonamovingcompanyofcharacters.Playingcreaturesisdescribedin
moredetailonp.XX.

Region

Betweenthepictureofthesiteandthetextbox,ontherightsideofthecard,isthe
regionthesiteisin.Middleearthisdividedupintoregions,muchliketheU.S.A.is
dividedupintostates.
Somecreaturescanonlybeplayedincertainregions.

CardsDrawn

inthebottomleftcomerofthesitecardaretwonumbers.Oneisblackonwhite,the
otheriswhiteongrayandisupsidedown.

Whenyoumovetoasite,youandyouropponentwilldrawcards.Youmaydraw
cardsuptotheblacknumberonwhite,butyoumustdrawatleastone.Your

opponentmaydrawcardsuptothewhitenumberongraythatisupsidedown,but
hemustdrawatleastone.

TextBox

Youwillnoticethatsiteshaveaboxoftextunderthepicture.Someofthetextis
italicizedflavortext,whichhasnoeffectongameplay.Thereisalsoimportant
informationinthetextbox.OneisthenearestHavenforasite,whichistalkedabout
inthemovementsectionbelow.

Thenextmostimportantpieceofinformationiswhatisplayableatthatsite.Things
typicallylistedasplayableatasiteareinformation,goldringitems,minoritems,
majoritems,andgreateritems.Informationcardsareeventcardsthatsay
"Information"asthefirstwordintheirtextbox.Thevarioustypesofitemstypically
playableatasiteareidentifiedbytextjustbelowthepicture,ontherightsideofthe
card.Thisisrightwheresiteslisttheregiontheyarein,andcharacterslisttheirskills
andrace.

Youmayhavesomesitesthatdonotlistanythingthatisplayableatthem.Thereare
stillcardstoplayatthesesites,likefactions,allies,certainevents,andspecialitems.
Formoreonthesetypesofcardyoucanseethesectiononthesitephaseonpage
XX.

Somemoredangeroussiteswillalsolistanautomaticattack.Thisrepresentsthe
peopleorcreaturesthatliveatthesite.Attacksaredealtwithinmoredetailonp.
XX,andautomaticattacksareexplainedmoreonp.XXinthesitephasesection.
Fornowallyouneedtoknowisthattoplayanythingatthesite,youmustfacethe
automaticattack.

Movement

Duringthegameyourcharacterswillmovefromsitetosite.Toshowthatacompany
ofcharactersisatasite,youplacethatsitecardfaceupwiththecompany.

Duringthemovement/hazardphase(p.XX),yourcharacterscanmovetoanother
site.However,therearesomelimitsonwhatsiteacompanycanmoveto.Thelimits
dependonthesitewhereyourcompanystartstheturn.Eachcompanycanonly
moveonceeachturn.

IfyourcompanystartstheturnatasitethatisnotaHaven,theycanonlymoveone
place.TheycanonlygobacktotheHavenlistedasthenearestHavenonthesite
wheretheycurrentlyare.

IfyourcompanyisataHaventheyhavetwooptions.First,theycangotoanysite
thatliststheHaventheyareatnowasitscurrentHaven.Soifacompanyisat
Rivendell(aHaven),theycanmovetoanysitethatsays"NearestHaven:Rivendell."
inthetextbox.

Second,acompanyataHavencanmovetoanotherHaven.EachHavenliststwo
otherHavensinthetextbox.EitherofthesetwoHavensmaybemovedto.

SohowdoyougetfromonenonHavensitetoanotherone?Sayyouwanttoget
fromBagEnd(nearestHavenRivendell)totheLonelyMountain(nearestHaven
Lrien).FirstyouwouldmovefromBagEndtoRivendell(nonHavensitetoits
nearestHaven).ThenextturnyouwouldmovefromRivendelltoLrien(Havento
Haven).Finally,onthethirdturnyouwouldmovefromLrientotheLonelyMountain
(HaventoasitelistingthatHavenasthenearestHaven).

OtherCards

Therearetwomaintypesofothercards:resourcesandhazards.Resourceshavea
coppercoloredbackground.Theyareplayedduringyourownturnonly.Hazards
haveablackbackground.
Theyrepresenttheevilforcesoftheworld,andareonlyplayedwhenyouropponent
ismovinghiscompanies.Thedifferenttypesofhazardsandresourceswillbe
explainedasyoustartplayingyourfirstgame.

2PlayingtheGameSettingUp

Thefirstthingbothplayersshoulddoismakesuretheyhaveseparatedoutallof
yoursitecards.Setthemasideintheirownpile,thisisthelocationdeck.

Nextpickoutuptofivecharacterstostartplaywith,butdonotshowthemtoyour
opponentyet.Thetotalmindofthesecharacterscannotexceedtwentypoints.You
maystartwithlessthantwentymindpointsifyouwant,orlessthanfivecharacters.

Youmaynotstartwithmorethanthat.YoumaynotstartwithanyWizardcharacters.
Charactersmaynotusedirectinfluenceatthistime.Thatis,onecharactercannot
followanotherrightnowtofreeupinfluencetocontrolmorethantwentymindpoints.

Whichcharacterstostartwithishardtochoosewhenyouhavenotplayedthegame
atall.Youshouldhaveatleastonehighmindcharacter(eightorninepoints).Start
withhim.Besideshimyouwillwantatleastonescout,atleastoneranger,andat
leastonemorefighterwithaprowessof5or6.Ifyoucanfitadiplomatandasage
inalsothatisgood.

Onceyouhavepickedyourstartingcharacters,bothplayersrevealtheirstarting
charactersimultaneously.Ifanyareduplicatedtheyaresetasideforthemoment.

Ifyoubothhavemostofthesamecharacters,thenafterrevealingthemhaveoneor
nocharactersleft.Thishappensbecausemostofyourstartingcharacterswillcome
fromthesmallerpackofcardsinthestarter,calledthefixedpack.Thereareonly
fivefixedpacks,andsometimestwo

playersgetthesameone.Ifyouhavethisproblemyoucangobackandtrytosplit
thecharactersupevenlybetweenthetwoplayers.

Onceyouhaveyourstartingcharactersready,fmdaRivendellcardinyourlocation
deck(everystartercomeswithtwo).Placethiscardwiththestartingcompany.This
showsthattheyareatRivendellatthestartofthegame.

Takeanycharactersnotinyourstartingcompany,eitherbychoiceorfrom
duplication,andputthemwithyourothernonsitecards.Thesecardsmakeupyour
playdeck.Shuffletheplaydeckthoroughly,andallowyouropponenttocutyourplay
deck.Onceyourdeckisshuffledandcutdrawthetopeightcardsoffthedeckfor
youropeninghand.

Eachplayernowrollsthedice.Whoevergetsthehigherrollgetstogofirst.Reroll
anyties.Thefirstplayerfollowstheturnsequenceasoutlinedbelow,thentheir
opponentdoes.Playerstakealternatingturnsuntilthegameisover.

ThePlayerTurnTheUntapPhase

Theuntapphaseisthefirstphaseofthegame.Duringthecourseofplayyourcards
willbecometapped.Turnthemsideways90toindicatethis.Tappingacardshows
thatithasbeenusedfornow.Somethingsrequireyoutotapacardforthemto
happen.Thecardmustbeuntappedinordertodothis.

Duringtheuntapphase,allofyournonsitecardsinplayuntap.Ifanyofyourcards
inplayaretapped,turnthembacktorightwayup(sitesdonotuntap).Yourfirstturn,
nothingwillbetapped,soyouwillnotdoanythinginthisphase.

Somecharactersmaybecomewoundedincombat(seep.XX).Ifacharacterisata
Havenduringtheuntapphase,theymaygofromwounded(turnedupsidedown)to
tapped(turned90).Otherwisetheystaywounded.

TheOrganizationPhase

Theorganizationphaseiswhenyouorganizeyourcharactersandpreparethemfor
movement.

Companies

Charactersareorganizedintocompanies.Atthestartofthegameyouhaveone
companyofcharacters,andtheyareatRivendell.Forthestartofthegamekeepthis
companyasonecompany,untilyougetthehangofhowthegameplays.

WhenacompanyisataHaven,itcansplitintotwoormorecompanies.Thiscould
allowyoutogototwositesonthesameturnandplaytwoitems.Thisisquickerbut
morerisky,asfourcharacterscandefendthemselvesbetterthantwo.Tosplittwo
companies,simplysplitthetwosetsofcharactersapartvisiblyontheplaysurface.If
youhavetwocopiesoftheHaventheyareat,playoneoneachcomany.Notethat
afollowermustbeinthesamecompanyasthecharacter

hefollows.

Also,ifyouhavetwocompaniesatthesameHavenduringtheorganizationphase
youmayjointhemintoonecompany.

CharactersandFollowers

Duringtheorganizationphaseyoumayalsochangewhofollowswho.Ifacharacter
hasenoughdirectinfluencetocontrolasecondcharacter,youmakethesecond
characterafollower.Thisfreesupthegeneralinfluenceyouwereusingtocontrol
thatcharacter.Thisisgoodfortworeasons.One,somehazardsareworseifyou
havelessunusedgeneralinfluence.Two,ifyouhaveunusedinfluenceyoucanplay
morecharacters.

Eachturnyoumayplayonecharacter,eitheraWizard(ifyouhavenotplayedone
already)oranothercharacter.Youmustbeabletocontrolthecharacterwitheither
yourgeneralinfluenceoracharacter'sdirectinfluence.Wizardsdonotrequire
influencetocontrol.

Youmustplaythecharacterateithertheirhomesite,orataHaven.Ifthecharacter
isyourWizardhemustbeplayedathishomesiteorRivendell.Ifthecharacteris
controlledbygeneralinfluence,hecanbeplayedaloneatasite(bringthesiteoutto
showwhereheis),orhemaybeplayedwithanexistingcompany.Ifheisplayed
aloneheisacompanyofone.Ifthecharacteriscontrolledwithdirectinfluence,then
thesiteheisplayedatmusthavethecharacterwhosedirectinfluenceisbeingused.

TransferringandStoringCards

Ifoneofyourcharactershasanitemthatyouwantanothercharactertohave,you
cantransfertheitembetweencharactersduringtheorganizationphase.

Bothcharactersmustbeinthesamecompany.Onlyitemsmaybetransferred,not
alliesandevents.Thecharacterwiththeitemmustmakeacorruptioncheck(seep.
XX).Ifthecharacterpassesthecorruptioncheckyoumaymovetheitemtoany
othercharacterinthesamecompany.

Youmayalsostoreitemsandeventsduringtheorganizationphase.Anyitemmay
bestored,buteventscanonlybestoredifthesaytheycan.Tostoreaneventmake
sureyouareattherightsite,andthenputtheeventinyourmarshallingpointpile.To

storeanitemyoumustbeataHaven.Thecharacterwiththeitemmakesa
corruptioncheck.Ifhepassesthecheckyoumayplacetheiteminyourmarshalling
pointpile.

PreparingMovement

Next,youmustdecidewhereyourcompaniesaremovingthisturn.Remember,a
companydoesnothavetomove.Iftheyaremovingpickanewsitecardforthem.If
theyareatanonHavensite,thenewsitemustbethesite'snearesthaven.Ifthey
areataHaven,thenewsitemusteitherlistthatHavenasitsnearestHaven,orbe
anotherHavenlistedontheHaventheyareatnow.Formoreonthisseep.XX.
Onceyouhavepickedthenewsiteforacompany,placethatsitefacedownwiththe
company.Thesitecardmustcomefromyourlocationdeck,notthediscardpile.The
actualmovementisdoneduringthemovement/hazardphase.

Pickingasitetomovetocanbeconfusingatfirst.Ifyouhavenoideawhattodo,
lookatthecardsinyourhand.Lookforresourcecards(thecoppercoloredones)
withnumbersinthetopleftcomerofthecard.Ifitisinformationoranonspecial
item,lookforasitethatliststhattypeofcardasplayable.Ifthecardisafactionor
anally,thecardwilltellyouatwhichsiteitcanbeplayed.Ifitisaspecialitemthere
aretwopossibilities.One,itwilltellyouthesitewhereitcanbeplayed.Two,itisa
ringofsomesort.Ifitisaringyoumustfirstdrawandplayagoldringitem,andthen
somehowtestthegoldring(seep.XX).

Checkthesitebeforeyouplaceitwiththecompany.MakesurethenearestHaven
listedonthesiteistheHavenyourcompanyisat.Ifnot,youwillhavetomoveto
thatsitesnearestHavenfirst.Donotworry,eachstarterhaseveryHaveninit.

PlayingResources

Finallyyoumayhavearesourceeventtoplay.Ifyouhavearesourcethatsays
"Playableduringtheorganizationphase."nowistheonlytimeyoucanplayit.

Readtheeventtoseewhatitdoes.Youmaynotwanttoplayit.Ford,forexample,
keepsyouropponentfromplayingcreatureskeyedtowilderness(W).Ifyouhaveno
wilderness(W)inyoursitepath,thereisnopointinplayingthecard.Saveituntil
youdohavewilderness(W)inyoursitepath.

Ifyoudowanttoplaytheeventsimplysaythatyouaredoingso.Itmayrequireyou
totapcharactersordootheractions(Fordrequiresyoutotaparanger).Ifitisa
shortevent,itwilllastforadurationspecifiedonthecard.Ifitisapermanenteventit
willstayinplayuntildiscarded

byaneffect.

LongeventPhase

Certainhazardsandresourcesarelistedaslongevents(underthepicturetothe
right).Thesecardsaremeanttostayinplayfortwoturns,onefortheplayeritis
playedbyoron,andonefortheiropponent.Thelongeventphasedealswiththese
cards.Duringyourfirstturn,andmostofyourotherturns,youwilldonothinginthis
phase.

Ifyouhaveanyresourcelongeventsinplay,thendiscardthem.

Step1.Ifthecompanyhasafacedownsitecard,flipthatcardover.Thenewcardis
thecompany'snewsite,andthecompany'scurrentsitebecomesthesiteoforigin.
Donotdiscardthesiteoforiginjustyet.Youmayneedittodeterminethesitepath
forthecompany.

Step2.Ifthecompanyisnotmoving,thennocardsaredrawnbyeitherplayer.Ifthe
companyismoving,thenyoumaydrawcardsuptothenumberinblackonwhiteon

thesitethecompanyismovingto.Youmustdrawatleastonecard.Youropponent
maydrawcardsupotthenumberinwhiteongray,andupsidedownonthesitethe
companyismovingto.Hemustdrawonecard.Theexceptionisifyouaremovingto
aHaven.Thenbothplayersdrawcardsbasedonthesitethecompanyismoving

Step3.Youropponentplayshazardsonthemovingcompany.Hazardsareplayed
andresolvedoneatatime.Insomecasestheymaynotdirectlyaffectacompany.
Hazardsmaynotbeplayedthattargetadifferentcompanyoracharacterina
differentcompany.Onceyouropponentisdoneplayinghazards,goontoStep4of
themovement/hazardphase.

PlayingHazardEvents

Youmayonlyplayacertainnumberofhazardsonacompanywhentheymove.To
determinehowmanyhazardscanbeplayed,countupthenumberofcharactersin
thecompany(countHobbitsasonehalfofacharacter).Thenumberyouget,
roundedup,isthecompany'ssize.Itisalsotheirhazardlimit.Youmaynotplay
morehazardsonacompanythanthecompany'shazardlimit.Acompany'shazard
limitwillnotchangeduringthecourseofaturn,eveniftheyloseacharacterwhile
moving.

Todeterminewhichhazardscanbeplayed,tookbetweenthetextboxandthe
picture.Thatiswhereitsaysthetypeofhazardthecardis.Therearefourtypesof
hazards:shortevents,longevents,permanentevents,andcreatures.

Shorteventsandpermanenteventsgenerallystartwith"Playableon"anda
descriptionofwhatcardstheycanbeplayedon.Ifacardfittingthatdescriptionis
notinplay,thenyoumaynotplaytheevent.Otherwise,youmayplaytheeventon
thatcard.Cardsthatareplayableonacharacterfacinganattackorstrikeareonly
usableduringcombat(seebelow).

Iftheeventdoesnotdescribewhatitisplayableon,youcanjustplayitonthetable.
Readitcarefullybeforeplayingit.Ifitisalongeventorpermanenteventitwillaffect
youalso,onyour

turn.Longeventswillstickaroundfortwoturns,andpermanenteventswillstayin

playuntildiscardedbysomeeffect.

Ingeneral,whenaneventisplayed,youropponentcanrespondtothateventwith
othereffects(liketappingacharacterforaspecialabilityorplayinganeventoftheir
own).Theeventthatwasplayed,ordeclared,lastistheonethatwilltakeeffect,or
resolve,first.Thisiscalledlastinfirstout(LIFO)order.Aseriesofeventsplayedin
responsetoeachotheriscalledachainof.effects,andthewholechainisresolved
inLIFOorderoncebothplayersarefinishedresponding.

Ifahazardisresolvedthatforcesthecompanytoreturntoifssiteoforigin,then
stopplayinghazards.Anyhazardsdeclaredbutnotyetresolvedwillstillresolve.If
thenewsiteistappedandanonHavensite,thendiscardit.Ifthesiteisuntappedor
aHavensite,thenreturnittothelocationdeck.Thesiteoforiginbecomesthe
company'scurrentsite.ProceedtoStep5ofthemovement/hazardphase.

PlayingCreatures

Playingcreaturesisoneofthemostcomplicatedpartsofthegame,soreadthis
sectionverycarefully.Whatcreaturescanbeplayedonacompanydependson
whatthecompany'ssitepathis.ThesitepathislistedonthenonHavensitecard
theyaremovingtoorfrom,alongtheleftside.IfthecompanyismovingfromHaven
toHavenitwillbeinthetextboxofbothHavens.

Creatureshavesymbolsalongtheirleftsidejustlikesitesdo.However,theseare
notsitepaths.Theregionsymbolsonacreatureshowwhatsortofterrainthat
creaturelivesin.Ifacompanymovesthroughtheappropriateterrain,thecreature
canbeplayedonthem.

Todetermineifyoucanplayacreatureonacompany,comparetheregionsymbols
onthecreaturetotheonesinthesitepath.Ifoneofthemmatchesyoumayplaythe
creature.Youonlyhavetomatchoneofthesymbolsfromthecreaturetothesite
path.Theoneexceptionisifonesymbolappearstwiceonthecreature,Redouble
wilderness(WW).Thentheremustbetwoofthatonesymbolinthesitepath(they
donothavetoberightnexttoeachother).MatchingsymbolsRethisiscalledkeying
acreaturetothatregiontype.

Makesurethesymbolmatchesexactly.Allregionsymbolshaveacirclearound
them.Symbolswithoutacirclerepresentthesite.Youcannotmatchaborderhold
(b)toaborderland(B),forexample.Butifyoucanmatchasitesymbolona
creaturetothesymbolonthesitethecompanyismovingto,thenyoucanplaythe
creature.Ifthesymbolsgetconfusing,tookonthebackoftherulebook.Ithasa
chartexplainingwhateachoneis.

Somecreatureshavenosymbolstokeythecreaturewith.Thesecreatureswilltell
youwheretheycanbekeyedorplayedatintheirtextbox.Sometimestheywillbe
playableatcertainsites,inwhichcasethecompanymustbemovingtothatsitefor
thecreaturetobeplayed.Othertimestheywillbeplayableincertainregions.Check
theregionsofthesiteoforiginandthenewsite(itsbetweenthetextboxandthe
picture).Ifthecreatureisplayableateitherregion,youmayplayit.

Combat

Onceacreaturehasbeenplayedonacompany,thereiscombatbetweenthe
charactersandthecreature.Combatisdividedupintoattacks,usuallyoneattack
percreature.Eachattackisdividedupintostrikes.Foreachattack,followingthese
steps:

StepA.Eitherplayermayplayeventsthataffecttheattack.iftheattackiscancelled
atthistime,discardthecreaturecard.NotethatafterStepAofCombat,noevents
maybeplayedthatchangethenumberofstrikestheattackhas,orthatcancelthe
attack.Anyhazardsplayedcounttowardthehazardlimit.Oncebothplayersare
doneplayingeventsgotoStepBofCombat.

Ifthecreaturesays"Attackerchoosesdefendingcharacters,"thenskipStepBof
Combat.

Ifthecreaturesays"Eachcharacterfacesastrike,"thenskipStepsBandCof
Combat.Eachcharacterisconsideredtobeassignedonestrike.Also,nocards
playedinStepAofCombatwill

affectthenumberofstrikesfortheattack.

StepB.Thedefender(theplayermoving)mayassignstrikestountapped
characters.Assignonestriketoeachuntappedcharacter,inwhateverorderyou
choose.Youmaynotassigntwostrikestoonecharacter,youmaynotassignstrikes
toatappedcharacter,andyoudonothavetoassignstrikestoanuntapped

characterifyoudonotwantto.Continueassigningstrikesuntileitherallstrikesare
assigned,yourunoutofuntappedcharacters,oryouwantto.Anystrikesyoudonot
assignyouropponentwillgettoassign.

StepC.Theattacker(theplayerwhoplayedthecreature)mayassignanystrikes
thatarenotyetassignedtoacharacter.Youmayassignstrikestoanycharacterthat
doesnotyethaveastrike,evenifthatcharacterisuntapped.Youmaynotassign
twostrikestoonecharacter.Ifallcharactersinthecompanyhavebeenassigneda
strike,andtherearestillstrikesunassigned,rememberhowmanystrikesareleft.
TheextrastrikesmaybeusedasImodifierstotheprowessofcharactersincombat
(seeStep3oftheStrikeSequence,Step?ofCombat).

StepD.Eachcharacterwhohasbeenassignedastrikemustresolvethatstrike.The
defenderchoosestheorderinwhichstrikesareresolved.Toresolveastrike,follow
theStrikeSequence.

StrikeSequence

Step1.Theattackermayplayhazardcardsthataffectthestrike.Thesecount
againstthehazardlimit.

Step2.Theattackmaydecidetouseanyorallofhisremaining(ifany)Iprowess
modificationsduetounallocatedstrikes.Thesearetheextrastrikesinexcessofthe
companysizeleftoverfromStepCofCombat.

Step3.Ifthecharacterisuntapped,thedefenderdecideswhetherornottotapthe
character.Ifanuntappedcharacterdoesnottap,theygeta3modificationtotheir
prowessforthisstrike.

Step4.Thedefendingplayermayplayresourcecardsthataffectthestrike.Onlyone
cardmaybeplayedthatrequirestheuseofaskill.

StepS.Thedefendingplayerrollsthediceandaddstheprowessofthecharacter.If
thecharacterwastappedbeforeStep3oftheStrikeSequence,thenthecharacter
getaImodificationtotheirprowess.IfthecharacteriswoundedbeforeStep3of
theStrikeSequence,thenthecharactergetsa2modificationtotheirprowess.

Comparetheresulttothestrike'sprowess.Thiswillbelistedonthecreaturecardin
thesameplaceacharacter'sprowesswouldbe.

Iftheresultisgreaterthanthestrike'sprowess,thenthestrikefails.Ifthebodyofthe
strikeis"BO'thenstrikeisdefeated.Ifthebodyofthestrikeisanumber,the
defenderrollsthediceforabodycheck.Ifthebodycheckisgreaterthanthestrike's

body,thenthestrikeisdefeated.

Iftheresultisequaltothestrike'sprowess,thenthestrikewasineffectual.That
meansthestrikewasavoided,butnotdefeated.

Iftheresultislowerthanthestrike'sprowess,thenthestrikewassuccessful.
immediatelyturnthecharactercardupsidedown.Thecharacteriswounded.The
attackerrollsthediceforabodycheck.IfthecharacterwaswoundedbeforeStep5
ofthestrikesequence,addonetotheroll.Ifthebodycheckisgreaterthanthe
charactersbody,thatcharacteriseliminated.

Whenacharacteriseliminated,theyareremovedfromplay.Thatcharactermaynot
beplayedagainbyeitherplayer.Sincetheywereeliminatedincombat,theymay
automaticallytransferanyitemstheybeartounwoundedcharactersinthesame
company.Eachcharactermayonlyreceiveoneiteminthisfashion.Anyallies
controlledbythecharacterarediscarded.

StepE.Onceeachcharacterassignedastrikehasfacedone,seeifallofthestrikes
weredefeated.Iftheywere,thenthecreatureisplaceinthedefender'smarshalling
pointpile.The

defenderreceivesthemarshallingpointslistedinthetopleftcomerofthecreature
card.Ifthatcreaturewasunique,neitherplayermayplayitagain.

Ifanyofthestrikeswerecancelled,ineffectual,orsuccessfulthenthecreatureis
discarded.

Theattackisnowover.ContinuewithStep4ofthemovement/hazardphase(forgot
aboutthat,didn'tyou?)

Step4.Ifthecompanymovedtoanewsitethisturn,thenremovethecompany's
siteoforigin.IfthesitewastappedandanonHavensite,thendiscardthesite.Ifthe
sitewasuntappedoraHavensite,thenreturnthesitetothelocationdeck.Atthis
pointthecompanyisconsideredtohavearrivedatthenewsite.Thenewsite
becomesifscurrentsite.

Step5.Bothplayersmustdiscardanycardsinexcessofeightintheirhand.Ifeither

playerhasfewerthaneightcards,thentheymustdrawcardsuntiltheyhaveeight
cardsintheirhand.

Remembertorepeatthemovement/hazardphaseforeachcompanyyouhave,even
iftheyarenotmovingtoanewsite.

SitePhase

Onceeachofyourcompanieshasamovement/hazardphase,theneachcompany
hasasitephase.Ifyouhavemorethanonecompanyyoudecidetheorderinwhich
theyresolvetheirsitephases.ifacompanyhasnothingtododuringthesitephase,
skipit.Otherwise,thecompanymustenterthesite.

Toenterasite,simplydeclarethatyourcompanyisenteringandexploringthesite.
Ifthesite
hasanautomaticattacklistedonthesitecard,thenyourcompanymustfacethe
attack.Treatthisjustlikeanattackfromacreature(p.XX),exceptthereisno
creaturecardandyoureceivenomarshallingpoints.

Oncetheautomaticattackhasbeenfacedyoumayplaycardsatthatsite.Youdo
nothavetodefeattheautomaticattack,justfaceit.Youmustfacethe
automaticattackontheturnyouwanttoplayacard,evenifyoufacedinona
previousturn.

Toplayanitematthesite,firstmakesuretheitemisplayablethere.Thesitewilltell
youwhichtypesofitemscanbeplayedthere(anitem'stypeislistedbetweenthe
textboxandpicture).Iftheitemisaspecialitem,itwilleithertellyouwhatsiteitcan
beplayedatorbearingitem(seep.XX).Iftheitemisplayable,youmaytapan
untappedcharacterandplacetheitemwiththatcharacter.Thentapthesite.One
otheruntappedcharacterinthepartymaytaptoplayaminoritem.

Toplayafactionatthesite,checkthefactioncardtomakesureitisplayableatthe
site.ifitis,tapanuntappedcharactertomakeaninfluenceattempt.Tomakean
influenceattemptrollthedice.Addanydirectinfluencethecharacterisnotusingto
controlfollowers,includinganyspecialbonusesinthetextbox.Alsoaddany
modificationsfromthefactioncardbasedonthecharacter'srace.Ifthefinalresultis
greaterthanthenumbergivenonthefactioncard(inthetextbox),thenplacethe
factioninyourmarshallingpointpile,gainanumberofmarshallingpointsequalto
thenumberinthetopleftcornerofthecard,andtapthesite.Ifthefinalresultisless
thanorequaltothenumbergivenonthefactioncard,discardthefaction.

Toplayanallyatthesite,checktheallytomakesureitisplayableatthesite.Ifitis,

tapanuntappedcharacterandplacetheallywiththatcharacter.Theallymust
remaininthecharacter'scompanyfortherestofthegame.Ifthecharacteris
discardedoreliminated,discardtheally.Alliesareconsideredcharactersonlyfor
combatandplayingcardsthatrequireaskill.Ignorethemindofanally.Alliesdonot
needtobecontrolledwithinfluence.

EndofTurnPhase

First,youmaydiscardonecard.Thisisusefulifyouhaveeightorlesscardsinyour
handand

haveacardyoudonotwant.Youcandiscarditandthendrawanotheroneinthe
secondpartoftheendofturnphase.

Second,ifyouhavelessthaneightcardsinyourhand,youmustdrawuptoeight
cardsinyourhand.Ifyouhavemorethaneightcardsinyourhandyoumustdiscard
untilyouonlyhaveeightcardsinyourhand.

Nowtheturnisover.Youropponenttakeshisturn,followingthesameprocedure.
Continuealternatingturnsuntilthegameends.

IfYouRunOutofCards

ifatsomepointinthegameyoudrawthelastcardinyourdeck,thatdeckis
consideredexhausted.Whenthishappens,takeallofthesitecardsoutofyour
discardpile.Returnthesesitestothelocationdeck.Takealloftheothercardsin
yourdiscardpileandshufflethem.Thesecardsarenowyourplaydeck.

FinishingtheGame

ThegamecontinuesuntiltheFreeCounciliscalled.AttheFreeCouncilwhoever
hasthemostmarshallingpointswinsthegame.UsuallytheFreeCounciliscalledby
aplayer,andhisopponentgetsonemoreturntoplaycards.

CallingtheFreeCouncil

ThefirstwaytocalltheFreeCouncilistoscore18marshallingpoints.(Inanormal
gameyoumustscore20,butifyouareonlyplayingwithstartersthisisloweredto
IS).Attheendofanyturninwhichaplayerhas18ormoremarshallingpointhemay
calltheFreeCouncil.Attheendofhisopponent'snextturntheFreeCouncilbegins.

ThesecondwaytocalltheFreeCouncilistoexhaustyourplaydeck.Attheendof
anyturnafteraplayersplaydeckhasbeenexhaustedtheymaycalltheFree
Council.AttheendofhisopponentsnextturntheFreeCouncilbegins.

ThethirdwayfortheFreeCounciltobecalledisbythegame.Attheendofanyturn
whenbothplayer'splaydeckshavebeenexhausted,theFreeCounciliscalled.The
FreeCouncilbeginsattheendofthatturn.

TheFreeCouncil

BeforetheFreeCouncilbegins,eachcharacterinplaymustmakeacorruption
check(seep.XX).Bothplayersmayplayresourcestohelptheircharacter'smake
thecorruptionchecks.Anycardsdiscardedoreliminatedduetofailedcorruption
checksdonotcountformarshallingpointsattheFreeCouncil.

Afterthecorruptionchecksaredone,recounteachplayer'smarshallingpointtotal.
Totalallpointsfromcharacter,allies,eventsanditemsinplayandallpointsfrom
creatures,events,factions,anditemsinthemarshallingpointpile.Theplayerwith
themostmarshallingpointswinsthegame.Ifbothplayershavethesamenumberof
marshallingpoints,thenthegameisadraw.

3OtherThingsthatmayHappenCorruptionChecks

Atmanypointsduringthegameyourcharacterswillberequiredtomakecorruption
checks.Todosoyoumustfirsttotalallofthecorruptionacharacterhas.Corruption
pointscancomefromeventsanditemsplayedonthecharacter,andarelistedinthe
bottomrightcomerofeachcard.

Onceyoutotalthecorruptionpointsyouthenrollthedice.Thedicerollmaybe
modified,checkthelowerrightcomerofthecharactercardforanymodifications.If
theresultisgreaterthanthenumberofcorruptionpointsonthecharacter,thenthe

characterhaspassedthecheck.Iftheresultisequaltooronelessthanthe
corruptionpointtotal,thenthecharacterandallitemshebearsarediscarded.Ifthe
resultistwoormorelessthanthecorruptionpointtotal,thenthecharacteris
eliminatedandallitemshebearsarediscarded.

PlayingRingSpecialItems

RingsareanimportantpartofMiddleearth.WhenBilbofoundtheOneTrueRingin
TheHobbit,hedidnotknowwhatitwasuntilitwastestedinTheFellowshipofthe
Ring.Likewise,inMETWyoumustfirstplayagoldringitemandthentestitbefore
playinganyofthespecialringitems.

Toplayagoldringitemfromyourhand,gotoasitethatsays"Playable:Items(gold
ring)."Afterfacingtheautomaticattackyoumayplayagoldringitem(seep.XX).

Toplayaspecialringitem,ReaDwarvenRing,LesserRing,MagicRing,ortheOne
Ring,youmusttestagoldringitemyouhavealreadyplayed.Testingagoldring
requiresaresourceeventorGandalfTotesttheringplaytheresourcetestevent,or
tapGandalfThenrollthedice.Thegoldringitemwilllistonitwhichspecialring
itemsmaybeplayeddependingonwhattheresultofthedierollis.Ifyourollthe
rightnumberyoumayplaythespecialringitemwiththecharacterwhohadthegold
ringitem.Whetherornotyouwereabletoplayaspecialringitem,thegoldringitem
isdiscardedafterthetest.

Unique&CannotbeDuplicated

ifacardisunique,eachplayermayonlyhaveonecopyofthatcardintheirdeck.Ifa
characterisunique,onlyoneplayermayhavehiminplay.Ifheiseliminatedthen
neitherplayermayplayhimtherestofthegame.Ifacreatureisuniqueandis
defeated,neitherplayermayplaythatcreaturetherestofthegame.

Ifashorteventsaysitcannotbeduplicated,thenonlyonecopyofthatcardmay
haveaneffectonplayatanytime.Ifalongeventorpermanenteventsaysitcannot
beduplicated,thenonlyonecopyofthatcardmaybeinplayatmytime.

4TypicalSpecialAbilities
Maykeeponemorecardthannormalinyourhand

Ifyoucontrolacharacterwiththisspecialabilityyourhandsizeisincreasedbyone.
Wheneveryouwoulddiscarddowntoeightcards,discarddowntonineinstead.
Wheneveryouwoulddrawuptoeightcards,drawuptonineinstead.Two

characterswiththisspecialabilityarecumulative,soyoumaykeeptencardsinyour
