Dear Jennings School District Parents and Guardians:
Thank you for helping us have a successful first quarter of the school year. Due to the potential Ferguson unrest,
our Thanksgiving holiday break will be extended to include Monday and Tuesday, November 24 and 25, 2014.
As you know, at the beginning of this year Jennings remained a peaceful place during the Ferguson unrest and
we want to thank our families in advance for maintaining that commitment in the weeks ahead. To further
support our students, schools have provided lessons on topics that include safety in the community and Civil
Rights. Jennings Junior High students held a peace march to protest against violence this month. Jennings
Senior High held an assembly entitled Take a Stand to Keep a Seat: Centralizing Change brought to the district
by the Civil Rights activists who were the youngest of the Little Rock Nine. As a district we believe that it is
important we teach students ways to discuss and become involved in matters impacting their community.
However, we also want to remind our students of the importance of becoming involved in nonviolent, peaceful
ways that ultimately uplift the community overall.
Although school will be closed, we are committed to ensuring our students have lunch and breakfast available
on Monday and Tuesday. Breakfast will still be provided on Monday and Tuesday to any student in need from
8:00 - 9:00 AM and lunch from 12:00 - 1:00 PM from two central locations in the district, Jennings Senior High
and Fairview Elementary. Additionally, the district has established a help line for mental health services or
other family resources that will be monitored by Jennings counselors and social workers beginning Saturday,
November 22nd - Saturday, November 29th. The number is 314-653-8000. The local Jennings Civic Center will
be open next week, Monday-Wednesday, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM. Their computer lab will be accessible during
that time for students who would like to access classroom activities online. Additionally, several local churches
will be open during the week, and we will be updating our website as more information is received. As an
additional resource, on the back of this letter is a list of mental health agencies as well as area food pantries.
This information is also posted on the website along with other resources.
Please remember that most textual materials and curriculum items can be accessed through school webpages.
Additionally, all K-8 schools normally provide weekly homework packets to support students when they are
absent and to allow other students to work ahead. The weekly homework packets will continue to be sent home
as they have been throughout the year.
If you have questions, please contact your childs school. While we recognize that closing school may pose an
inconvenience for some families, our philosophy is that we can always make up a school day if it insures the
safety of our students. We do hope that the additional resources provide support to our families while school is
closed. We thank you for your support and cooperation as we make school closing decisions.
