RISE UP IN SPLENDOR

This great feast of the Epiphany of the Lord

opens with these words: “Rise up in splendor,
Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of
the Lord shines upon you” (Isaiah 60:1). That
reading goes on to describe a world covered
with darkness. Even in that world, the
prophet announces that the glory of the Lord
will shine on Jerusalem. Many would agree
that our world is covered with darkness—the
darkness that war, terrorism, and famine
bring. Today we announce that even in to-
day’s world, the Lord can scatter that darkness, if only we would welcome
Epiphany’s light. As we remember the visit of the magi to the manger, let us
pray that one day our weary world will rise up in splendor—the splendor

PROTECT CREATION
1. At the beginning of this New Year, I wish to offer heartfelt greetings of peace to
all Christian communities, international leaders, and people of good will through-
out the world. For this XLIII World Day of Peace I have chosen the theme: If You
Want to Cultivate Peace, Protect Creation. Respect for creation is of immense
consequence, not least because “creation is the beginning and the foundation of
all God’s works”,[1] and its preservation has now become essential for the pacific
coexistence of mankind. Man’s inhumanity to man has given rise to numerous
threats to peace and to authentic and integral human development – wars, international and regional conflicts, acts of
terrorism, and violations of human rights. Yet no less troubling are the threats arising from the neglect – if not downright
misuse – of the earth and the natural goods that God has given us. For this reason, it is imperative that mankind renew
and strengthen “that covenant between human beings and the environment, which should mirror the creative love of
God, from whom we come and towards whom we are journeying”.

The most common sign is when someone begins to
ask questions about God, good and evil, or the
meaning of life. A lot of people in our society have Joseph and the Amazing

Annual Pancake Breakfast

Once again the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast for the entire parish. It will be held
in the Parish Life Center on Sunday, January 17; from 8:00 AM until noon. The knights will be serving pan-
cakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, juice, milk and coffee. As usual there will also be made-to-order omelets
for a small additional charge.

Tickets will be available after all of the masses the weekend of January 2nd & 3rd in the PLC. The cost of
tickets purchased in advance are $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for Seniors and $3.00 for children between the ages
of 4 and 12. Families of 4 or more (parents and children) pay only $20.00. Of course tickets can also be
purchased at the door, but they will cost $1.00 more for adults and seniors. Made-to-Order omelets are only
$2.00 extra.

Come out and enjoy a great breakfast without having to trek out into the cold. It is a short walk between the
church and the PLC, so stay warm and enjoy the company of your fellow parishioners while the knights serve
you a freshly made breakfast.

Baby Bottles for Life

This month our parish will be participating in a spe-
cial fundraiser to promote and further a Culture of
Life within our parish and local community. The pro-
ceeds of this event will help support the life-saving
work of Woman's Choice Services, a Catholic preg-
nancy center with locations in Lombard, Downers
Grove, Hinsdale and their new Center that just
opened in September in Crest Hill, Illinois.
Holy Hour for Year of the Priest
Join us on the second Thursday of the month at
7:00pm as we pray a holy hour for our priests. Pope
Benedict has declared this current year as the “Year
of the Priest”. What better way to honor these men
than to gather before Jesus exposed in the Eucha-
rist and pray for them.

On the weekend of January 9th and 10th, baby bot-

tles will be distributed to parishioners to take home
and fill with spare change. Bottles will then be re-
turned to the parish the weekend of January 23rd
and 24th.
Baby Bottles for Life is a great way for each member
of the family to help in building a Culture of
Life. Thank you in advance for your response to the
call of the Gospel to serve those in need. As you
take a bottle, also pray for a child!
