Introduction
Social Case work may be defined as the art of doing different things for and with different
people by cooperating with them to achieve at one and the same time their own and societys
betterment. Mary Richmond (1915)
Social Case Work, a primary method of social work, is concerned with the adjustment and
development of individual towards more satisfying human relations. Better family life,
improved schools, better housing, more hospitals and medical care facilities, protected
economic conditions and better relations between religious groups help the individual in his
adjustment and development. But his adjustment and development depend on the use of these
resources by him.
Sometimes due to certain factors, internal or external, he fails to avail existing facilities. In
such situations, social caseworker helps him. Thus, social casework is one to one
relationship, which works in helping the individual for his adjustment and development.
Every individual reacts differently to his social, economic and physical environments and as
such problems of one individual are different from those of another. The practice of casework
is a humanistic attempt for helping people who have difficulty in coping with the problems of
daily living. It is one of the direct methods of social work which uses the case-by-case
approach for dealing with individuals or families as regards their problems of social
functioning. Case work, aims at individualized services in the field of social work in order to
help the client to adjust with the environment.
Definitions
Mary Richmond (1917): Social case work is the art of bringing about better adjustments in
the social relationship of individual men or women or children
Jarrett (1919): Social case work is the art of bringing an individual who is in a condition of
social disorder into the best possible relation with all parts of his environment.
Raynolds (1935): Social case work is that form of social work which assists the individual
which he suggests to relate himself to his family, his natural group, his community.
Bowers (1949) Social case work is an art in which knowledge of the sciences of human
relations and skill in relationship are used to mobilize capacities in the individual and
resources in the community appropriate for better adjustment between the client and all or
any part of his total environment.
Gordon Hamilton (1956) Social case work (which is both a tool and area of work) consists
of those processes which develop personality through adjustment consciously affected,
individual by individual between man and his social environment.
Perlman (1957): Social Case work is a process used by certain human welfare agencies to
help individuals to cope more effectively with their problems in social functioning.
Intake
This starts with first encounter and ends with usually the second interview with the intake
worker. This phase requires a very skilful probing into the clients problem, mopping up all
the relevant areas of the person-in-his-situation.
During one or two skilfully conducted interviews with the would-be client, the caseworker
(sometimes called as intake worker) is able to assess (i) what are the needs/problems of
applicant person, and (ii) how and where his needs can be best met.
This obviously requires that the caseworker finds out the nature of need, if it can be met in
the present set-up of agencys policies, procedures, services and personnel, and what sort of
competence and provisions will be helpful and is required to tackle his problems.
II.
Psycho-Social Investigation
Social study is the initial assessment of clients current, relevant past and possible future
modes of adaptation to stressful situations and normal living situations.
Perlman has given the following contents of the case work study:
1. The nature of the presenting problem
2. The significance of the problem.
3. The cause(s), onset and precipitants of the problem.
4. The efforts made to cope with problem-solving.
5. The nature of the solution or ends sought from the case work agency.
6. The actual nature of the agency and its problem solving means in relation to the client and
his problem.
III.
Perlman (1957) Diagnosis helps in determining the focus of treatment, further collection of
facts and deciding the best course of action to solve the problem.
Content of the Social Diagnosis:
1. The nature of the problem brought and the goals sought by the client, in their relationship
too.
2. The nature of the person who bears the problem and who seeks or needs help with the
problem, in relation to.
3. The nature and purpose of the agency and the kind of help it can offer and/ or make
available.
IV.
Hamilton, Treatment is the sum total of all activities and service directed towards helping an
individual with a problem. The focus is relieving of the immediate problem and, if feasible,
modifies any basic difficulties which precipitated it.
The objectives of Social case work treatment are:
1. To prevent social breakdown.
2. To conserve clients strength.
3. To restore social functioning.
4. To provide happy experiences to the client.
5. To create opportunities for growth and development.
6. To compensate psychological damage.
7. To increase capacity for self-direction.
8. To increase his social contribution.
V.
Monitoring provides crucial feedback to case worker and the client regarding
1. Whether the treatment program is succeeding as desired,
2. Whether established goals have been achieved,
3. Whether modifications in the program are necessary and
4. Whether the client is being helped in real sense.
VI.
At the end, i.e. termination, the worker should discuss the original as well as revised goals
and objectives, achievements during the helping period, factors helpful or obstructive in
achieving the objectives, and the efforts needed to maintain the level of achievement and the
feelings aroused by disengagement.
It is neither wise nor necessary for the termination to be an abrupt one and it is best to discuss
termination and its ramifications (implications) several times before the final interview.
Follow-up is done to help client maintain the improvement. During follow-up, the client is
helped to discuss the problems he faces in maintaining the improvement. If required, he is
referred to the proper source for needed services and help.
The follow-up should be planned on a diminishing basis after two weeks, then a month,
then three months, six months and a year following the termination of the formal program.

did not seem to care.
Problem: Client was reluctant to talk about his problems and his perceived weakness about
himself to a stranger, often lashes out and is stubborn.
Profile of Activities: The caseworker met with the client for the first time and talked heard
about the problems from his family members. The caseworker tried to open up the client to
know what the client thinks of his problems; Sanjay reluctantly said a few lines and went
back to sulking.
Observation:
Client was very resentful of having to listen to his problems being told to a stranger hence the
client was reluctant to open up. Positive persuasion helped the client to give the case worker a
chance to talk with him.
Action Plan for Next Visit: To successfully intake the information regarding the problems of
the client.
Conclusion: The client is very reserved and needs to open up to someone. The client is also
clearly frustrated but has been unable to express himself so far. The client also feels that his
family has been unsupportive.
Visit No. 2:
Day and Date: Wednesday, 1st October 2014
Time Spent: 3:30 PM 4:00 O.M
Venue: Clients home, E-8 Extension, Arera Colony
Purpose of visit: To continue the intake process of social case work.
Introduction: During the initial visit, the client reluctantly agreed to accept help from the
caseworker, agreeing to try to talk with the case worker openly.
Profile of Activities: The caseworker and client talked in the clients own room, in privacy.
The client was in visibly a better mood today and it seemed that he had time to think about

Time Spent: 5:32 PM- 6:00 PM
Venue: Clients home, E-8 Extension, Arera Colony

them together. It was understood that though the family wanted to support Sanjay and help him, they
felt frustrated at times and may have had heated confrontations and arguments which caused Sanjay to
isolate him from them.
Conclusion: There was an obvious lack of communication in the family that needed to be
dealt with. Neither the client nor the family members were able to express themselves to each
other well which caused many arguments between them and caused some tension between
the two.

had been. The casework had changed Sanjays attitude towards change in his surroundings
and he was willing to adapt to those changes rather than be stubborn and go in isolation. The
client, now supported by his family and in company of better classmates feels ready to put the
bad days behind him. The caseworker also talked with the clients family to take their

Evaluation
When the social casework began, the caseworker could clearly see how anxious and stressed
out the client was. The client was in no way calm or composed enough to consider the real
cause of his problems, instead all the problems and the anxiety caused by them made the
client feel overburdened and overwhelmed. The client felt lonely as well, which did not help
with the client's self esteem and confidence. All these factors contributed to finally making
the client stressed out and desperate for relief like clutching a straw while sinking. The client
attributed all his problems to his love failure and ignored his real core problems. Casework
process had to ensure that the client would be able to self determine the real cause of his
problems with some guidance and help from the caseworker. This changed the perception of
the client regarding his problems in a major way. The caseworker gradually guided the client
in understanding his core problem and helped the client to start dealing with them. As the
casework process continued, the client grew visibly better equipped to handle his stress and
anxiety and gained self esteem. Social Casework allowed the client to focus on the real
problems and taught the client how to practically deal with them. As a result of social
casework the client is now capable enough to deal with problems like these in the future on

At the beginning of social casework process the client was frustrated, isolated and aloof. This
was primarily due to the client having to bottle up all his feelings and not being able to
express himself openly. The clients wishes and views were also not taken up seriously by the
family which added to the frustration. Social Casework Process first tried to improve his
relations with the family and help him cope with his frustration. The casework process
enabled the client to gain some measure of control over his life and hence improve his
relationships with his family and environment overall.
37
Conclusion
Social Casework Process is the art of helping people (the client) to help themselves. The
caseworker works together with the client to help the client to be capable enough to deal with
his/her future problems on his/her own. Thus the social casework process helps the client
become self sufficient to deal with any problems that may arise in the future.
Case 1: The social casework process allowed the client to relieve the client's frustration and
resentment that had been bottled up within the client and had been causing all sorts of
problems to the client and those around him. The casework process also guided the client to
successfully deal with his addiction issues. By the end of social casework process the client's
temperament had improved, as well as his relationships with people in his environment.
Case 2: The client was very anxious and stressed out due to his various problems. The client
felt overwhelmed with his problems and was focusing on something minor and neglecting his
main problems. Social Casework Process guided the client to deal with his anxiety and stress
problems as well as in learning to deal with similar problems if they should arise in the
future.
Case 3: The client prior to social casework had many problems with his environment. The
client felt that he was not able to control his own life, contributing to his frustration. Lack of
effective communication in his family also contributed to his problems. Casework process
helped the client in communicating and adjusting with his environment and made the client
feel in greater control of his own life.
