Prayer, the lifting of the mind and heart to God, plays an essential role in the
life of a devout Catholic. Without a life of prayer, we risk losing the life of
grace in our souls, grace that comes to us first in baptism and later chiefly
through the other sacraments and through prayer itself (Catechism of the
Catholic Church, 2565). Through prayer we enter into the presence of the
Godhead dwelling in us. It is prayer which allows us to adore God, by
acknowledging his almighty power; it is prayer that allows us to bring our
thanks, our petitions, and our sorrow for sin before our Lord and God.
While prayer is not a practice unique to Catholics, those prayers that are
called "Catholic" are generally formulaic in nature. That is, the teaching
Church sets before us how we ought to pray. Drawing from the words of
Christ, the writings of Scripture and the saints, and the guidance of the Holy
Spirit, she supplies us with prayers grounded in Christian tradition. Further,
our informal, spontaneous prayers, both vocal and meditative, are informed
by and shaped by those prayers taught by the Church, prayers that are the
wellspring for the prayer life of all Catholics. Without the Holy Spirit
speaking through the Church and through her saints, we would not know
how to pray as we ought (CCC, 2650).
As the prayers themselves witness, the Church teaches us that we should
pray not only directly to God, but also to those who are close to God, those
who have the power to intercede upon our behalf. Indeed, we pray to the
angels to help and watch over us; we pray to the saints in heaven to ask their
intercession and assistance; we pray to the Blessed Mother to enlist her aid,
to ask her to beg her Son to hear our prayers. Further, we pray not only on
our own behalf, but also on the behalf of those souls in purgatory and of
those brothers on earth who are in need. Prayer unites us to God; in doing so,
we are united to the other members of the Mystical Body.
This communal aspect of prayer is reflected not only in the nature of
Catholic prayers, but also in the very words of the prayers themselves. In
reading many of the basic formulaic prayers, it will become apparent that,
for the Catholic, prayer is often meant to be prayed in the company of others.
Christ himself encouraged us to pray together: "For wherever two or more
are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them" (Matt.
18:20).
Keeping in mind the aforementioned characteristics of Catholic prayer will
enable you to appreciate and to understand the prayers listed. While this list
is certainly not an exhaustive one, it will illustrate the different kinds of
Catholic prayers that help to form the treasury of prayers in the Church.

brothers, do not be remiss in doing good.

All:
ANT. O Lord, in your light we see light itself.
Sin speaks to the sinner
in the depths of his heart.
There is no fear of God
before his eyes.
He so flatters himself in his mind
that he knows not his guilt.
In his mouth are mischief and deceit.
All wisdom is gone.
He plots the defeats of goodness
as he lies on his bed.
He has set his foot on evil ways,
he clings to what is evil.
Your love, Lord, reaches to heaven;
your truth to the skies.
Your justice is like Gods mountain,
Your judgments like the deep.
To both man and beast you give protection.
O Lord, how precious is your love.
My God, the sons of men
find refuge in the shelter of your wings.
They feast on the riches of your house;
they drink from the stream of your delight.
In you is the source of life
and in your light we see light.

Tobit 4:15a, 16a, 18a, 19

hungry some of your bread, and to the naked some of your
clothing. Seek counsel from every wise man. At all times bless
the Lord God, and ask him to make all your paths straight and
to grant success to all your endeavors and paths.
RESPONSORY
L: Incline my heart according to your will, O God.
R: Incline my heart according to your will, O God.
L: Speed my steps along your path,
R: according to your will, O God.
L: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
R: Incline my heart according to your will, O God.

THURSDAY
Sign of the Cross
Awake, lyre and harp, with praise let us awake the dawn
All:
Have mercy on me, God, have mercy
for in you my soul has taken refuge.
In the shadow of your wings I take refuge
till the storms of destruction pass by.
I call to God the Most High,
to God who has always been my help.
May he send from heaven and save me
and shame those who assail me.
May God send his truth and his love.
My soul lies down among lions,
who would devour the sons of men.
Their teeth are spears and arrows,
Their tongue a sharpened sword.
O God, arise above the heavens;
may your glory shine on earth!
They laid a snare for my steps,
my soul was bowed down.
They dug a pit in my path
but fell in it themselves.
My heart is ready, O God,
My heart is ready.
I will sing, I will sing your praise.
Awake, my soul,
awake, lyre and harp,
I will awake the dawn.
I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples,
among the nations I will praise you
for your love reaches to the heavens
and your truth to the skies.
O God, arise above the heavens;
May your glory shine on earth!
L: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
All: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.
Amen.
Psalm prayer (Reader)
Lord, send your mercy and your truth to rescue us from
the snares of the devil, and we will praise you among the
peoples and proclaim you to the nations, happy to be known as
companions of your Son.
Ant. (All)

Isaiah 66:1-2
Thus says the Lord: The heavens are my throne, and the earth is
my footstool. What kind of house can you build for me; what is
to be my resting place? My hand made all these things when all
of them came to be, says the Lord. This is the one whom I
approve: the lowly and afflicted man who trembles at my word.

Romans 13:11-14
You know the time, it is the hour now for you to awake
from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first
believed, the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then
throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light;
let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day, not in orgies and
drunkenness, not in promiscuity and licentiousness, not in
rivalry and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make
no provision for the desires of the flesh.
Responsory

VI. PRAYER EVERY 4TH PERIOD
Prayer at Bedtime
O my God, I adore you and I love you with all my heart.
I thank you for having created me, having saved me by your
grace and for having preserved me during this day.
I pray that you will take for yourself whatever good I might
have done this day and that you will forgive me whatever evil I
might have done. Protect me this night, and may your grace be
with me always and all my love. Amen.
Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your
protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was
left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, we turn to you,
O Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To you we come,
before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions,
but in your mercy hear and answer us. Amen.
XV. SOME PERSONAL PRAYER
A. A Prayer for the Gift of Wisdom
Great is the wisdom of the Lord! God Almighty, Your Wisdom
includes an understanding of what is fair, what is logical, what
is true, what is right and what is lasting. It mirrors Your pure
intellect! I entreat You to grant me such Wisdom, that my
labours may reflect Your insight. Your Wisdom expands in Your
creations, displaying complexity and multiplicity. Your Wisdom
is an eternity ahead of man. May Your wisdom flourish forever!
evils from us, for all blessings pray. Show thyself a Mother,
may the Word divine born for us thine Infant hear our prayers
through thine. Virgin all excelling, mildest of the mild, free
from guilt preserve us meek and undefiled. Keep our life all
spotless, make our way secure till we find in Jesus, joy for
evermore. Praise to God the Father, honor to the Son, in the
Holy Spirit, be the glory one. Amen.
B. Magnificat
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my
Savior; Because He has regarded the lowliness of His
handmaid; for behold, henceforth all generations shall call me
blessed; Because He who is mighty has done great things for
me, and Holy is His Name; And His mercy is from generation to
generation on those who fear Him. He has shown might with
His arm, He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and has exalted
the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the
rich he has sent away empty. He has given help to Israel, His
servant, mindful of His mercy - Even as He spoke to our father to Abraham and to his posterity forever.
C. Prayer to Our Lady
Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that never was it known
that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or
sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this
confidence, we turn to you, O Virgins of virgins, our Mother. To
you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O
Mother of the Word Incarnate, do not despise our petitions, but
in your mercy hear us and answer us. Amen.
XVII. NOVENA PRAYER TO NUESTRA SEORA DEL
BUEN SUCESO
Oh Queen of Angels, Mother of Jesus Christ, my Lord! You are
the virgin of Buen Suceso, loving Mother and Patroness of the
town of Paraaque, you willed to be called such and six times
that name was drawn when your image was first seen. You are
the refuge of your afflicted and sorrowful children. Through
you, we obtain Gods mercy and blessings. Look down upon us
as we prostrate ourselves before you, to pray for our needs
(silently pray for your petition)
Dear mother, we are aware that often times we take for granted
the blessings and graces we have received. Teach us to be
thankful for every good thing and happening in our lives. Help
us to follow your example of living and proclaiming the good
news of your son. At the end, we hope to be united with you
praising God in his everlasting kingdom. Amen.

(for every small beads)
Leader: For the sake of His sorrowful passion,
All:
have mercy on us, and on the whole world.
All:
the noble and precious blood, flowing from the wounds of the
my crucified Lord Jesus Christ and washing away the sins of the
whole world. Remember, Lord your creature, whom you have
redeemed with your blood; I repent my sins, and I long to put
right what I have done. Merciful Father, take away all my
offenses and sins; purify me in body and soul, and make me
worthy to taste the holy of holies. May your body and blood,
which I intend to receive, although I am unworthy, be for me
the remission of my sins, the washing away of my guilt, the end
of my evil thoughts, and the rebirth of my better instincts. May
it incite me to do the works pleasing to you and profitable to my
health in body and soul, and be a firm defense against the wiles
of my enemies. Amen
XXI. A Prayer After the Holy Mass
LORD, Father all-powerful, and ever-living God, I thank Thee,
for even though I am a sinner, Thy unprofitable servant, not
because of my worth, but in the kindness of Thy mercy, Thou
hast fed me with the precious Body and Blood of Thy Son, our
Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this Holy Communion may not
bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and
salvation. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will.
May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil
passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and
obedience, and growth in power to do good. May it be my
strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and
the perfect calming of all my evil impulses, bodily and spiritual.
May it unite me more closely to Thee, the one true God and
lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with
Thee. And I pray that Thou willest lead me, a sinner to the
banquet where Thou with Thy Son and Holy Spirit, are true and
perfect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without
end, and perfect happiness to Thy saints. Grant this through
Christ our Lord. Amen.
