1. Introduction
With advancement of technology, many countries gained access to the internet within last
two decades. In fact, World Wide Web (WWW), created by American army for effective
utilization of its army and its protective information. Later this web is used by civilians
for their enjoyment, knowledge and communication. In the meantime, Internet provides
the most popular platform social network sites (SNS) like Facebook, twitter, Myspace
and WhatsApp etc. SNS can be defined as web-based services that facilitating the
building the social relation among different cultural, regional and countries people and
share your activities, backgrounds and interests. Now the question arises, how and why
SNS are so popular? Its popularity comes into the picture when college and school
students start using it extensively.
1.1. Background
This research is conducted to explore the effect of SNS and its impact on academic
life and learning experiences of students. It explained that the SNS grabs the
attention and concentration of the students and diverts them towards time wasting
activities, useless chatting, and unethical and non-educational actions. Students and
teenagers mostly use social networks for time killing and sake of enjoyment but it
has been analyzed that but proper use of internet for only social network is very
useless perhaps dangerous.
1.2. Objective Questions:
1. How social media are commonly used among college and school students?
2. Those students who surf SNS, on average how much time they spend on
SNS per day or per week?
3. What difference come in the academic performance of students who surf
the SNS and who dont?
1.3. Expected Results
With the extensive use of social media, the grades of students are affected. The
students are wasting a lot of time on social networking sites and because of that
they are not utilizing their time into some productive work.

2. Preliminary Literature Review

Jonathan, (2009) explained how social networking sites like Facebook fans do worse in
exams. Researchers have discovered that students who are addicted of social network
sites spend their time in chatting, pokes and making new friends may devoted only 1-2
hours to their studies. According to survey 83% of the British teenagers indulge in these
social networking sites and organize their social life and love to spend more time on it.
Aryn Karpinski, a researcher explains that according to his study students who spent
more time on Facebook spend less time studying and every generation has its
distractions, but I think Facebook is a unique phenomenon. 79% of Facebook using
students believed the time they spent on social network sites had no impact on their work.
Ohio Universitys report says 68% of the facebook users get lower grades than those who
dont use and also notice that 65% facebook users login their accounts many times in a
day to check their messages. But facebook used to say, Facebook is very good source of
knowledge for the students by liking different knowledgeable pages. But its in the hand
of students how to use it and how to manage their time.
Tariq, Mehboob, Khan, & Ullah (2012) examines the impact of social networks on
education, students and impact on life of teenagers. Social media can have positive effect
but today the career of the students is getting affected by the social media. The focus of
the students is shifting from education to the time waster social networking sites. The
students are getting addicted toward these sites.
The objective of this research is to determine the impact of social media on the students
who are under 18 years. The students are illegally accessing these sites. This research is
descriptive and defines the problem. The conclusion of this result is that there should be a
strict check on the students under 18 years on what kind of websites they are surfing and
their activities on social networking sites. Moreover, the government should ban those
sites which are affecting the future of the students.

Paul, Baker & Cochran, (2012) tells about the relationship between the time spent on the
online networking websites and their academic performance. Social media was meant as

a tool for communication and now a days it is also meant as a platform for teachers to do
teaching. According to a survey done on the business students of a large state university it
was found that there was a negative relationship between the time spent on online
networking websites and their academic performance. It was found that the time spent on
online social networking (OSNS) was highly influences by the attention span of
students. The higher was the time, lower was the attention span. Further it was found that
the attention span was highly correlated with the perceptions of people such that societys
view about the social websites, their likes and dislikes on OSN etc.
Karpinski,, Kirschner, Ozer, Mellott,, & Ochwo, (2013) examined the effect of
multitasking with social networking sites like facebook on the grade point average (GPA)
of the students belonging to United States and European university. The study shown that
their exists a negative relationship between the grade point average and multitasking of
students with social networking websites. By using multiple regression it was seen that
the negative relationship was moderated by the US students only. It shows that the
European students were less prone to disruptive multitasking. Students are wasting a lot
of time on these social media websites and they cannot make a balance between these
websites and academics. These tools are also sometimes very important but the time spent
should be less and students need to make sure a proper time management to increase their
GPA.
Krakowsky (2014) highlights the various negative effects of social media on teenagers.
Social media can not only be a distraction to teenagers but also it can lead to
psychological and health issues. Teenagers are just wasting a lot of time on social media
sites just checking their news feed again and again and doing nothing productive. Due to
social media, the grades of students are getting effective idea.
Krakowsky also mention that social media increases cyberbullying and there are many
cases of oppression, rumors and kidnapping etc. Teenagers are more easily attracted
towards these type of bad activities and social media encourages to do so in one way or
the other. This research is descriptive type and it is qualitative. Krakowsky concluded that
using social media is just a waste of time for teenagers and a complete distraction.

Teenagers can efficiently use their time in some productive work rather than wasting time
on various social media websites.
