Countable & Non-Countable Nouns

NOUNS
Nouns are the names of people (doctor), places (city),or things (books).
In English, there are two kinds of nouns:
COUNT NOUNS and NON COUNT NOUNS.
It is important to understand the difference between them, because they use
different articles, and non-count nouns usually have no plural.
Here is a summary of the differences.
COUNT NOUNS
Count nouns are easy to recognize. They are things that we can count.
For example: book. We can count books. That means that there can be
more than one of them. Also, when a count noun is singular and indefinite,
the article a/an is often used with it. (The real meaning of a is one.)

dog, cat, animal, man, person

bottle, box, litre
coin, note, dollar
cup, plate, fork
table, chair, suitcase, bag

Countable nouns can be singular or plural:

My book is red.
My books are new.

We can use the indefinite article a/an with countable nouns:

A cat is an animal.

When a countable noun is singular, we must use a word like a/the/my/this

with it:

I want an orange. (not I want orange.)

Where is my bottle? (not Where is bottle?)

When a countable noun is plural, we can use it alone:

I like oranges.
Bottles can break.

NON-COUNT NOUNS
Non-count nouns are usually things which cannot be counted or they are
difficult to count, such as rice or water. Non-count nouns usually have
no plural forms. They are singular. We use a singular verb.

This news is very important.

____________________________________________________________
English Language Institute
Unit 1

22

Non-count nouns are substances, concepts, etc. that we cannot divide into
separate elements. We cannot "count" them.
Abstract words
Fields of study
Gases
Materials
Particles

courage, education, time

geography, history, math
air, oxygen, steam
cotton, plastic, silk
salt, sugar, sand

Activities
Foods
Liquids
Natural forces

exploring, sailing, dancing

corn, fish, chocolate
water, milk, gasoline
cold, electricity, weather

For example, we cannot count "milk". We can count "bottles of milk" or

"liters of milk". Here are some more uncountable nouns:
We do not use a / an with non-count nouns. When they are indefinite, we
use the word some or nothing at all instead of an article.

some rice
some water

Some nouns are usually uncountable in English but often countable in

other languages. Here are the most important of these:
accomodation
permission
weather

behavior
bread
baggage

furniture
information
luggage

news
work
chaos

scenery
advice
progress

trouble
traffic
travel

glasses

slacks

Some nouns are only used in the plural.

pajamas

jeans

shorts

scissors

There are nouns which finish in s but they are not usually plural.
mathematics

physics

economics

gymnastics

athletics

T.V. series

news

Some nouns can be used as countable or as uncountable nouns.

There is a difference in meaning. For example.
paper

I have a paper.
I have some paper.

(= a newspaper - C)
(= material for writing on - NC)

hair

Theres a hair in my soup.

She has beautiful hair.

(= one single hair - C)

(= hair on her head NC)

light

There are two lights in our bedroom.

(= lamps C)
Close the curtain. Theres too much light! (= light from the sun NC)

noise

I hear a noise!
