It is a very resourceful community

which could reach its full potential
with further Government investment,
which is important given the rapid
growth of new housing estates.
In particular the western bypass of
Bacchus Marsh via Halletts Way will
need to be built sooner rather than later.

Senator McKenzie toured a grain storage business in Ballan and said Agripack is using technology to improve
productivity.
It is businesses like these which will
bring more jobs to the region.

the tour, sampling their fresh sweet
strawberries.

A rhyme of the time

TWO Bacchus Marsh mothers have turned a
verse they painted on a board in their backyards into an inspiring childrens book called
I Found the Answer.
Tammy Bennett and Nerissa Kennedy said
the verse came from a conversation they had
about ten years ago about the rhyme Twinkle
twinkle little star and the line how I wonder
what you are. The verse was the answer to
that question.
It came about from sharing. We kept walking past the board and said we should turn it
into a childrens book, they said.
Its always been a part of our backyard but
rather than just share it with our kids we
wanted to share it with the children of the
world.
They hired an illustrator to work on the book
and self-published it through Balboa Press
in time for a launch at the Moorabool Shires
National Childrens Week celebrations in late
October.
We want to create different products to
inspire children to believe in love and their
dreams, Tammy and Nerissa said.
Half of the proceeds of the book sales will go
to Save the Children.
The books cost $10 each and are available for
purchase through sacredfriends.com.au or facebook.com/SacredFriendsAu

Posting a message for peace

Students from Pentland Primary School
celebrated peace, love and understanding
this month, as part of the 2014-15 Peace
Poster Competition.
Sponsored by Lions Clubs around the world,
the competition was introduced in 1988 and
encourages young people aged between 11
and 13 to artistically express their vision of
peace.
Participants use a variety of mediums
including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint
to express a new theme developed each year,
with the 2014 theme being Peace, Love and
Understanding.
18 students from Pentland Primary School
participated in the competition, with three
local judges including the District Chairmen
of Lionesss, Mary Jolly, local artist, Janice
Webster and the President of the Bacchus

Marsh Lioness Club, Christine OKeefe.

Ms OKeefe said the lionesses were very
thrilled with the students outstanding
work. It was a very successful competition,
and hopefully next year more schools will
consider participating, she said.
The winner of the competition was Breanna
Lampkin, who was presented with a
certificate and a small prize by the Lions
Club. Breannas poster will now go onto the
next step, where it will be judged in Victoria,
before potentially reaching America.
All of the children received certificates
and we chose a second and third [place]
and presented them with a small gift, Ms
OKeefe said.
The posters are judged on originality,
artistic merit and expression of the theme,
and can advance through several judging
levels including local, district, multiple
district and international.

Ongoing dollar support for major tourism events

Ballan Autumn Festival

will receive $6000 per year,
the Strawberries and Cherries Festival gets $5000, the
David Calleja Memorial Car
Show $2500 and the Bacchus
Marsh Harvest Festival will

a similar increase in the

requests for stall sites, performance spaces, associated
exhibitions and entrance in
the festival parade.

We believe that the grant

from Moorabool Shire demonstrates the shires confidence in the significant
role that the annual Ballan
Autumn Festival has in the
wider Ballan community. It
remains the only opportunity for the residents of Ballan to come together as one
- showcasing the town in a
celebration of all that is good
and positive about our shire.
The grant allows the BAF
to invite and secure more
attractions for the festival,
thus ensuring its viability.

Alert
fire siren
muffled
MOORABOOL Shire will
return a $30,000 Fire Ready
Community Grant for the
installation of a community
alert siren at Dales Creek
to the State Government by
May 2015 unless the government provides an extra
$40,000 to complete the job
properly.
The $30,000 grant was secured back in 2011 for the
siren infrastructure, however further siren trials and
testing indicated there was
a need to link the siren into
an early warning system
and the State Control Centre,
similar to the Barrys Reef
siren. The $40,000 shortfall
would buy the technology to
link these systems.
At last weeks ordinary
meeting of Council, councillors voted to invite the Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Minister for
Bushfire response to Dales

Creek to view first-hand the

high fire danger area that
would benefit from the community alert siren.
They also voted to transfer
installation of the community alert siren to the State
Government and away from
Moorabool Shire.
Councillor Pat Toohey said
every ratepayer in the shire
paid a Fire Services Levy,
which was mounting up
in State coffers, and council
shouldnt use ward funds
to build State Government
projects.
It is high time the State
Government stood up to
their responsibilities. We
should not fund things
they should be funding, Cr
Toohey said.
Cr Tom Sullivan said the
State Government was reneging on a deal and expected council to just cop

it and pay the shortfall. He

said if council did so then
it would give the State Government a get out of jail free
card worth $40,000.
Make them come to the
table as promised, Cr Sullivan said.
Moorabool Shire mayor
Paul Tatchell agreed and
said he was fed up with
building the region on the
back of the ratepayer and
that heading into a bad fire
season the State Government should be responsible.
If we start this, it will set
the worst precedent. Were
not talking about a lot of
money here, but we are talking about peoples lives, Cr
Tatchell said.
Councillors voted in favour
of returning the $30,000 Fire
Ready Community Grant
if all avenues of additional
funding failed.

collect $4000.
Those recommended for

key events in the shires tourism calendar and brought in
significant tourism dollars to
the local communities.
Ballan Autumn Festival
(BAF) secretary Kevin Harper said the festival committee was pleased to have
received this Existing Major
Tourism Event Grant from
the shire.
The Ballan Autumn Festival is celebrating its 40th
Anniversary in 2015 and
continues to be the most significant annual event in the
township, Mr Harper said.

Feedlot to
produce fat lambs
A LAMB feedlot in Bullarook has been given the go
ahead after Moorabool Shire
Council approved a planning permit last week.
The permit allows for five
pens of up to 500 lambs each
located on a 21.17 hectare
property at 114 Wilsons Rd,
Bullarook.
The application drew two
objections from neighbouring residents. Objector Marilyn Hewitt produced a letter
from a stock agent with 35
years experience, Leo White,
which stated that nobody
had successfully operated
a lamb feedlot in that area
due to climactic conditions
which would kill the lambs,
and that the best practice
was pasture grazing.
Ms Hewitt spoke about the
high rainfall, flooded pens
and difficulty cleaning wet
pens.
Moorabool Shire Council
planning has failed regarding climate conditions in
this decision, she said.

He said the location was
ideal and the feedlot would

however he said he was unaware of extensive flooding in
the area.

the coming Fire Season. Moorabool Shire has a high number of extreme and high risk areas
within its boundaries and residents need to be aware of the risk posed by wild re. Emergency
authorities have noted that there will be an above average risk of re in grasslands and forests
this season.
Council has issued over 200 Fire Prevention Notices to date to property owners to clear their
blocks for the coming Fire Season. Initial inspections are continuing. Property owners issued
with a Fire Prevention Notice must complete the work by the date specied on the notice and
ensure that their property is maintained for the Fire Season.
Council will commence re-inspections on 8th December 2014.
Property owners who have failed to carry out the work specied in a Fire Prevention Notice risk
heavy nes and will be required to repay the costs of any work carried out by council to comply
with the directions on the notice. The penalty for failing to comply with a Fire prevention Notice
has increased to $1476.00 this season. Additional slashing costs will also be charged.

Darley couple Angelina and Con GAVRIEL have had a

boy. Their second child Dion, was born on Monday 3
November at 6.24am weighing 8lb 15ox (4060g), and is a
little brother to big sister Tahlia.

Acting chief executive of

Djerriwarrh Health Services,
David Grace PSM, said it
was pleasing to note that the
health service had continued
to grow in recent years.
The growth in additional
staff assists the organisation
to meet the need to provide
maternity services for the
increasing number of births
within the area, as well as
expand our capacity to undertake elective surgery,
medical admissions and
emergency presentations,
Mr Grace said.

Young Lincoln has a little sister, Alexa Jacqueline. Born on

Monday 3 November at 1.21 pm to parents Ella and
Michael from Melton West, Alexa weighed 7lb 12 oz
(3.59kg).

Jennifer and Anthony from Melton West welcomed their

third child, a little boy Gabriel Salvador CRUZ on Tuesday
4 November at 2.05am. Weighing 3820g, the little bundle
is a brother for Yandel and Royce.

The health service will

need to continue growing
in the foreseeable future to
meet the health needs of
the existing population as
well as those people who are
moving into the new estates
and suburbs currently under
development in the area.

Last week Minister for

Health David Davis credited
the Victorian Governments
People in Health initiative
for the education and training of Victorias future
doctors, nurses and health
professionals.
This initiative has had an
enormous impact in expanding and building a sustainable health workforce in
Victoria, enabling it to meet
the challenges of our ageing
and growing population,
Mr Davis said.

We are proud to have

delivered a record number
of health professionals in
Victorias health workforce,
ensuring our health services
are well placed to deliver
the highest quality care to
patients, now and into the
future.
Mr Davis said the People
in Health initiative was significantly enhancing the careers of the next generation
of health workers, ensuring
they continued to receive the
best education and training.

Community to build safer

bushfire plan
BLACKWOOD has become
the second town in Victoria to use a communitybased emergency management program to plan for
bushfires.
Following a presentation
by Steve Cameron in June
about a pilot communitybased emergency management program (CEMP) used
in Harrietville, residents of
Blackwood showed a keen
interest in using a similar
approach for their town.
Blackwood Action Group
(BAG) member Brendan Hehir said: We immediately
saw its potential. Rather
than languishing in bureaucracys too-hard basket,
Blackwood was being offered the tools and support
to become its own solution.
Under
the
CEMP
framework,
well
have
access
to
Emergency
Management Victoria data
and management tools to
help the town build its plan;
one that will make us safer
from and more resilient
to the effects of natural
hazards, Mr Hehir said.

Victorian

Labor

Emergency Management Commissioner, Craig Lapsley and Blackwood Action Group

(BAG) member Brendan Hehir. Photo Helen Tatchell
Emergency
Management
Commissioner, Craig Lapsley, said the CEMP supported communities and organisations to work together
to become safer and more
resilient toward emergencies
such as bushfires, floods and
storms.
This approach builds on a

range of research and was

recently trialled as
part of a pilot project in
Harrietville, Mr Lapsley
said.
This whole of community
approach toward emergency
management connects communities with local government, emergency manage-

ment organisations and

business and industry, so
that they can support each
other before, during and
after emergency events. It
also assists the community
to develop and act on a plan
which is relevant, tailored
and effective for their needs.
The Blackwood commu-

nity is well underway in developing its own local

priorities and actions as
part of this project, however
work will be
ongoing as the town works
towards achieving both
short-term and long-term
goals as part of its plan.
Together, the community
will work to identify priorities, making the best
use of local knowledge,
skills and expertise to develop and achieve mutual
goals.
Mr Lapsley said community-based emergency management worked well for a
township such as Blackwood
because strong community
relationships and networks
already existed, including
within the Blackwood Action Group.
Mr Hehir said BAG was
still seeking input for the
plan and had already met
with Moorabool Shire, the
CFA, and the Department of
Environment and Primary
Industries.
He said the group also

Geoff Howard

hoped to meet with local

SES, Landcare, businesses
and crown reserve committees of management.
The CEMP will target
fire risks in and around the
town, areas which have been
neglected for many years,
and consider the use of fuelbreaks around the town,
Mr Hehir said.
Tourists and weekenders
swell the towns population
regularly. They too have a
responsibility and a right
to be informed on the risks
of staying here during the
summer months. A survey
of visitors should prove
useful. Local businesses,
especially accommodationbased, will be valuable partners in the forming of Blackwoods plan.
One day well shake off
this Too Difficult, Too Dangerous tag and be able to
get on with living and working in the piece of paradise
we call Blackwood.
He said Blackwood aimed
to have its plan in place for
the 2015/16 fire season.

Labor for Buninyong

Labor is committed
to upgrading our
schools and improving
education.

Labor will fix the

ambulance crisis
and deliver critical
investment in health.

Labor will rebuild the

Buninyong Fire Station
and support our hard
working firefighters.

$1 billion regional
roads fund to fix
local neglected and
deteriorating roads.

Labor will empower

young people with
funding for TAFE and

Labor will create the

Dear Editor,
While the future of our Angel Flight charity still hangs
in the balance I want to
take this opportunity to say
thank you to the people of
country Australia and local
councils for publicly supporting our organisation.
The many thousands of our
volunteers, who generously
give their time to help Australians in need, appreciate
the immense community
support Angel Flight has
received in our struggle for
survival.
We have strongly argued
our case in a detailed submission to the Civil Aviation
Safety Authority and we
now must nervously wait
to hear the outcome of their
deliberations.
Angel Flight has flown
17,000 flights over the past
11 years providing no-cost
transport for isolated people
of all ages seeking vital medical treatment in major cities.
Our charity wants to continue that work.
Angel Flight believes that
where you live shouldnt
deny you safe and swift access to medical expertise
and treatment.
We are about eliminating
distance and distress for
those in need.
The kind and supportive

messages we have received

from concerned local councils and rural communities
all over Australia have lifted
our spirits and made us
more determined to fight to
keep flying.
Too many people in many
remote towns rely on Angel
Flight for assistance and we
can only hope that commonsense and compassion overrides red tape when CASA
finally makes its decision on
our future.
Staying silent is not an option, and with your encouragement and support we
will keep fighting and flying.

Dear Editor,
Is it possible to truly get
a right result from wrong
intent?
The recent promise by Peter
Ryan that if re-elected the
government would institute
presumptive legislation to
aid ailing firefighters drips
with electioneering cynicism but fits the good result
category.
There are 12 cancers that
firefighters contract at a sta-

tistically significant higher

rate than the population.
One of these, testicular cancer, contracted at twice the
usual rate, was known as
chimney sweeps disease a
hundred years ago, so it is
not new. One major cause is
exposure to carcinogens in
the products of combustion,
in our modern times pretty
much a workplace hazard
only for firefighters.
In many jurisdictions these
12
compensation-worthy
cancers are presumed to
have been caused by the
firefighters duties and those
governments installed legislation which accepted the
onus of proving otherwise,
which they apparently seldom bother to do and accept
the claim.
Not so in Victoria, where a
year or so ago the government used its numbers to
vote down such an introduced bill exactly as they
now promise and, unilaterally it seems, instituted
a Firefighters Assessment
Panel. An afflicted firie had
to virtually prove to this
panel at which of many hundreds of, even thousands of,
incidents attended caused
the cancer. So we have
an ailing, distressed, unresourced firefighter trying
the prove the impossible.

For the last year a band of

volunteers, both through
their
association
and
through individual and
group outrage have been
trying to get the rules about
onus of proof reversed.
While not a waste of time, it
could have easily been unnecessary effort if the government of the day had seen
the light they now see in the
run-up to an election.
The volunteerism and investment of time, skill, their
own money and sometimes
risk of Victorias 50,000 or
so CFA firefighters is worth
about a billion dollars a year
to the state economy, and yet
the panel last year knocked
back a claim for about
$10,000.
We ordinary volunteers
arent in it for the medals
which are thrown about, nor
are we all that fussed about
being a yellow clad backdrop to a politicians photoop delivering a new truck.
But we are concerned for the
ease of mind of our mates
who contract a firefighters
cancer.

Rabbit proofing the land

Minister for Agriculture
and Food Security Peter
Walsh has launched a new
Victorian initiative that supports community-led action
on rabbits.
Minister Walsh said the
Victorian Government recognised rabbits were a major
pest that caused significant
economic and environmental damage.
The
Victorian
Rabbit
Management Collaboration
Initiative recognises that
coordinated community-led
efforts can deliver improved
management outcomes, Mr
Walsh said.
To support this approach,
the Victorian Government
and the Invasive Animals
Cooperative Research Centre are providing funding
of $300,000 towards the
initiative.
The initiative included a
training and mentoring
program to develop the next
generation of rabbit control
experts and a small grants
and workshop program.
An important part of the
initiative will be to share
success stories which will
provide support for participants and motivate future
action, Mr Walsh said.

the initiative visit depi.vic.

Firearms must
be secure
Police are calling on registered owners of firearms to
familiarise themselves with
their licence conditions or
risk being prosecuted.
Crime Investigation Unit
Senior Sergeant Scott Colson
said every licence holder
was required by law to take
responsibility for the safe
storage of their firearms.
The effective storage of
firearms is imperative to reducing the likelihood they
will be stolen and used to
carry out an offence, he
said.
The harder you make it
for someone to steal any of
your possessions, including
a firearm, the less likely it is
to occur.
Det Sen-Sgt Scott Colson
said random inspections
that take place are to ensure
compliance with legislative
requirements and to check
for any breaches.
The message to firearms
licence holders is that its
everyones responsibility to
ensure their firearms are secured in accordance with the
Firearms Act 1996 so they
dont end up in the wrong
hands.

Security tips for firearms

license holders include:
If possible, keep your approved firearm in a storage
facility or safe in your house
Ensure the safe is located out of sight of doors and
windows and that it is locked and secured to a wall
or floor
If kept in a shed, ensure the safe cannot be seen
from windows or doors
Ensure doors to sheds/garages are locked
Make sure tools are not left for offenders to use
Place security lights on sheds and garages and
consider installing an alarm system
Remove keys from tractors, quad bikes, motorbikes
and ride-on lawn mowers
If you are going away, consider having your firearms
safely stored with a licensed firearms dealer until
your return or alternatively, submitting an Absence of
Residence form to your local police station
Ensure keys to firearm storage facilities or safes are
kept securely in a separate location from where your
firearms are stored
Avoid displaying stickers or signage on your vehicles
or windows at home which may advertise firearm
ownership
Avoid publicising firearm ownership on social media
channels such as Facebook or Twitter.
Failure to comply with storage requirements may
result in licence cancellations, significant fines and
prosecution.
For more information about the safe storage of
firearms visit: www.police.vic.gov.au/firearms

Environmental Opinion

Watch the promises

Part I
You might have noticed that
there is a state election looming. Certainly the pages of
The Moorabool News have
been full to overflowing as
the various candidates tell
their stories and promise
heaps. I thought it might
be an idea to join this activity as someone writing; not
about roads, nor crossings,
nor public transport, as
important as all these are,
but about the environment.
Hence this week I will begin
to outline some points each
of the three main parties
have said in relation to the
environment. For the following information I am indebted to Environment Victoria
and their Promise Watch.
The Promise Watch examines 3 categories; what
the three main parties are
saying about, cleaning up

Victorias power supply and

reducing carbon pollution,
making Victorian homes
and communities efficient,
affordable and sustainable, and protecting and
restoring Victorians natural
environment.
Firstly, cleaning up Victorias power supply and
reducing pollution: Labors
Platform 2014 commits to revising greenhouse emission
reduction targets and pursuing a comprehensive strategy to achieve them, however
no policy announcements
have been made yet.
In office the Coalition has
removed the 20 percent carbon pollution reduction target from the Climate Change
Act. No commitment has
been made to reinstating
targets.
The Greens policy is for
binding Victorian emissions
targets to achieve a net re-

duction in greenhouse gas

emissions from all sources
by at least 40% from 1990
levels by 2020, and net zero
or negative greenhouse gas
emissions as soon as feasible
and by no later than 2050.
Secondly, developing renewable energy investment:
Labor has promised to release a Renewable Energy
Action Plan before the Election. Labor has committed to
removing the 2km exclusion
zone for new wind farms,
and would abolish additional 5km exclusion laws. Labor
has said it would consider
reintroducing the Victorian
Renewable Energy Target if
the federal target is reduced.
Labor has promised to allocate funding to support new
energy and regional development including renewable
energy projects as part of its
$1bn Back to Work policy.
The Coalition has attempt-

ed to undermine the federal

Renewable Energy Target by
arguing for the inclusion of
gas in the target as a renewable energy source. In 2011,
the Coalition implemented
restrictive planning regulations for wind turbines, including a veto right over an
entire wind farm project for
anyone living within 2km of
a turbine. And as the locals
of the Moorabool Shire are
well aware this has brought
the development of new
wind projects to a standstill,
costing regional Victoria
jobs and investment. The
Coalition has reduced the
solar feed-in tariff from $0.60
to just $0.06/kwh, reducing
support for the industry. The
Coalition has announced
$100,000 for a feasibility
study into a waste-to-energy
facility in Ballarat as alternative to landfill.
The Greens support the re-

moval of the 2km and 5km

wind farm exclusion laws.
The Greens support the reinstatement of the Victorian
Renewable Energy Target. It
has not explicitly said what
its Victorian target would
be, though the Greens policy
supports a national renewable energy target of 90% by
2030. The Greens support an
increase in the solar feed-in
tariff to a fair level equivalent to the retail price of electricity (i.e. 1:1 feed-in tariff)
and a clean energy fund to
provide loans to install solar
panels, however they are yet
to provide details on the value of the fund. The Greens
have a policy for a legislated
right to connect solar panels to the electricity grid.
Thirdly, phasing-out the
states most polluting power
stations and protecting communities from coal mining
risks like the Hazelwood

fire: Labor is yet to announce

plans to phase out any of our
oldest and dirtiest power
stations.
The Coalition is yet to outline any plans to phase out
any of our oldest and dirtiest
power stations. In 2011, the
Coalition abandoned State
Government
negotiations
with the owners of Hazelwood to secure early closure
of the power station.
The Greens have called
for the early retirement of
old power stations such as
Anglesea, Hazelwood and
Yallourn. However they do
not yet have specific policies
detailing their approach to
retiring power stations.
Part II will come next week.
What is your opinion?
Next MEG meeting: End
of Year BBQ. Thursday November 27th Venue to be announced. All Welcome.

own home thats a job for
an electrician. And when
the car needs repairs most
of us go to a mechanic. So
why take a DIY approach to
managing rental properties?
Some landlords, particularly those with just one or
two investment properties,
or renting out their home
during an overseas trip or
work move, try to save money by managing their own
property.
But the idea that a property managers role involves
handing out keys, a few reference checks and calling a
plumber in an emergency is
outdated.
Legislative
requirements
and tenant expectations
mean this is now a complex
and demanding role, requiring training and up-to-date
knowledge.
Victorias legislative requirements, in particular,
the Residential Tenancies
Act and others such as the
laws governing owners corporations, mean there is far
more to property management than the layperson
may realise.

And then there are the

ever-changing needs of
occupational health and
safety, including a range of
requirements for gas appliances and, even more importantly, for the installation
and maintenance of smoke
alarms.
Professional managers require extensive training to
keep up-to-date with the
rules and the many potential
pitfalls. Thats worth keeping in mind when negotiating your managers fee.

Property
management
is covered in both REIVs
Agents
Representatives
Course Victorias minimum real estate agent qualification and in the Certificate IV in Property Services
(Real Estate) necessary to become a licensed real estate.
Topics covered include legislative requirements, legally
compliant documentation,
managing leases, terminating leases and handling
moneys. Dispute resolution,
too, is a potential minefield
for untrained amateur.
Four of the advanced units
cover almost 50 topics. This
is worth keeping in mind if
you are thinking that having a professional property
manager looking after your
rental house or unit is just
another overhead.

On Saturday the pair became the first father and son
combination to play for the
McIntyre Cup in more than
20 years.
FATHER and son cricket
players Peter and Jack Lalor were the opening batsmen for Bacchus Marsh in
round six against Wallan on
Saturday.
Peter has become a seasoned
opener for the club over
the past 15-years, however
his son Jack played his first
game for the First XI after
scoring 264 runs in the first
five rounds for the clubs B
grade side. Jacks score of 89
not out in round five against
Ashfield elevated him to the
top side.

Peter said his advice to Jack

was to just enjoy it and have
a bit of fun.

Jacks always been mad on

cricket and always watches
it on television. We always
liked Ricky Ponting for a
batsman and Shane Warne
as bowler, he said.

The pair scored 88 between

them, with Peter 85 and Jack
3.

Wallan batted first making

only 76 runs and at the end
of play Bacchus Marsh were
3 for 151.

Avenue
Bowling Club
Results - Round 6
Avenues Premier team this
week hosted Bareena, in
what again was a must win
game for the team. In another case of so near yet so
far the team fell agonisingly
short in the final analysis.
Avenue started well and
held sway for the first half,
going into the tea break with
a 13 shot advantage over the
visitors. As happens in highlevel bowls the team trailing at the break will come
out with renewed vigour
after sandwiches and make
inroads into a lead. Avenue
were able to withhold the
initial charge, however between the 80th and 90th ends
Bareena were able to capitalise on opportunities and
take the lead. A dogfight
over the final ends ensued,
with the scoreboard level at
98 all with 3 ends to play.
Try as they may, Glenn
Sargents rink didnt have
the slice of luck they needed
in the final ends, and when
Glenns drive narrowly
missed, Bareena signed off
for a 2 shot win.
Andrew Myers rink led
the way on the day with a
29-18 win, Glenn Sargents
rink had a 26-16 win, whilst
Sam Shannahan and Martin
Sheas rinks suffered 5 and
18 shot losses.
Next week the team travels to Lara, where a win is
sought to boost the teams
confidence after narrow
losses in the past three
games.
Final score Avenue 99 lost
Bareena 101
Division 3
The team journeyed to remote Beaufort Golf Club
with full intention of maintaining their unbeaten record, however things did not
go exactly to plan.
After a slow start Avenue
found it difficult to shake
off a determined opposition.
Leading on three of the four
rinks for most of the day,
Avenue were unable to cover
Charlie Grants rink which
after 15 ends only trailed by
2 shots, before the opposition won 9 of the last 10 ends,
amassing 27 shots to 1 in that
time, before going down by
28 shots.
For Avenue, Bill Hawkens
rink maintained their winning streak with a solid 11
shot win, closely followed by
Glenn Davies rink (6 shots

up) with Frank Pomeroys

rink ending up with a draw,
for the side to go down overall by 11 shots.
It was the sides first loss
for the season and they still
maintain a strong position in
the top 4.
Final score Avenue 95 lost
Beaufort Golf 106
Division 5 - hosted bottom
side Mt Xavier and had to
win and win well to remain
in early contention for the
final four, after a disappointing loss last week. Led by
a strong performance by
Peter Glass rink (38 shots
up), Laurie Burkes rink (11
shots up) and Bob Delaneys
rink (13 shots up) Avenue
were able to account for their
opposition by a massive 56
shots. Although he was not
involved in a winning rink,
Robert Duncan put in a
strong performance as lead
in his rink in his debut game
in Division 5.
Final score - Avenue 128 def
Mt Xavier 72
Division 8 - Travelled to Sebastopol and played on their
synthetic green, hoping to
continue their strong form
to date. Led by an excellent
performance from Lyn Robinsons rink (20 shots up) and
Peter Kays rink (15 shots up).
Avenue were able to secure a
26.5 shot win despite being
a bowler down in one rink.
This win entrenches the side
in the top 4 with games coming up in the next few weeks
against the other top 4 sides.
Final score - Avenue 117.5
def Sebastopol 91
In Midweek Pennant Division 1 lost narrowly to
Webbcona. Di Hardiments
rink were the stars of the
day with an emphatic 14
shot win, however the other
rinks could not match their
opponents going down by 16
and 3 shots respectively. This
loss drops the side down to
6th position on the ladder,
however it must be noted
that less than one games
points separates 3rd and 8th
positions on the ladder and
the ladies are still very much
in the hunt.
The team are still finding
the going a little tough in
Division 2 recording a 10
shot loss to BMS. Other than
Brenda Robinsons 15 shot
win there was little joy for
Avenue with the other two
rinks both soundly beaten
on the day.
The fight is now on to avoid
relegation, however Avenue is currently competing
against two other sides for
survival in this Division.

Darley Cricket Club

The Seniors recorded three

wins from four matches
against East Ballarat whilst
the juniors recorded one win
from three in the Ballarat
Cricket Association. The Under 12s are midway through
their round three matches
in the Melton Junior Cricket
Association.
Seniors
The 1st XI had a one day
match at Darley Park after
rain prevented play last
week. East won the toss and
surprisingly sent Darley in,
bowling them out for 163 off
48.1 overs. Opener Lachie
Herring led the way with 35,
and was supported by Ollie
Smith 27 and Jake Wilkie
26. Ryan Ali again starred
with the ball taking 3/15 and
David Hoey was brilliant
with the gloves taking two
catches and two stumpings.
Hayden Jamieson took 2/13
and Darley debutant Sajith
Rupasingha 2/17 combined
well to take four top order
wickets for just 17 runs as
East were bowled out for 104
in just 38 overs.
The 2nd XI also had a one
day match, playing at East
High in Ballarat, and again
losing the toss to be sent into
bat and finishing with 8/174
from their allotted 45 overs.
Jason Spence starred with an
unbeaten 67, and was supported by an in form Ben
Hall with 34. Securing three
votes Ben Hall starred again
with the ball taking 4/35.
Chris Mackenzie 3/34 and

Dayle Locke 2/28 bowled

well, as did youngster Joel
Cadman whom, just days after his 14th birthday, bowled
in his first second eleven
match impressing with a
tight spell of 0/12 off 5 overs.
In the 3rd XI East resumed
at 3/42 chasing Darleys
first innings total of 176,
and looked likely to bat on
early before youngster Jye
Stephenson snared the first
wicket for the day to have
the visitors at 4/63. The
wickets fell steadily and East
were bowled out for 110. Corey Beatons bowling figures
of 2/2 off 2 would impress
anyone,but none more so
than James Kerr as anyone
who knows him could attest.
Craig McDonald 2/18, Jye
Stephens 2/30, Daniel Hynes
2/33, and Jack Watkins 2
catches and a stumping were
also highlights in the win.
The 4th XI resumed at 0/36
in response to East 164 at
Russell Square. Darren
Hynes was out early with 22,
however it was Josh Hynes
who highlighted after batting faultlessly most of the
innings for 20 and almost
rescued the match on two
occasions with partnerships
of 24 and 20 with Tyler Cox 6
and Ben Gould 15, however
it wasnt to be with Darley
eventually bowled out for
137.
Juniors
Under 16 Gold also had
a one day match after the
first week against BallaratRedan was washed out at
Alfredton. Darley won the
toss and sent the combination into bat, but managed
just 4 wickets as Ballarat/
Redan finished on 128cc off
their 25 overs. Corey Beaton

again starred with the ball

and again another famous
tally, this time it was Richie
Benauds 2/22. The young
Lions batted well in slow
conditions to be 5 down at
stumps on 80 off their 25
overs. Jye Stephens was the
standout with 31 not out.
Under 16 Blue hosted Wendouree at Darley Civic Hub
and looked to defend their
first innings score of 124. Despite the impressive efforts
from James Hunt with 3/11
from 4 overs and some very
economical bowling by everyone, most notably Callum
Margrain with 0/5 off 3, Darley were unable to bowl out
the visitors or restrict their
score. Wendouree finished
with 5/172 from 44.
The Under 14s got their first
taste of turf cricket of the
season after rain prevented
play last weekend, hosting Coronet City at Darley
Park. Losing the toss and
again being sent into bat,
openers Blake Colley 33 ret
n.o. and Jordan Monaghan
23 set up the innings and
were followed by Jacob Little
21* and Zach Pead 12* as
Darley cruised to finish on
1/112cc from their (reduced)
23 overs. Again the Darley
youngsters all bowled tight
to secure the win, with Blake
Colley 3/8, Brandan Foley
2/1, Jordan Monaghan 2/13
the highlights as the visitors
were restricted to just 9/68
off their 23 overs.
The second Darley Derby
got underway at Darley Park
on Friday evening this time
it was Darley Roar hosting
Darley Cubs. Roar won the
toss, and of course sent the
Cubs in to bat first. The Cubs
finished on 3/39 in their first
split innings, whilst Roar
went on to make 2/116 from

their 20 overs. Hayden Nash,

Will Johnson, and Cooper
Parsons-Jones all have wickets, whilst Will Johnson
28rtno, Hayden Nash 22rtno,
along with Ryan Densley 24
also starred with the bat. A
big effort from the Cubs with
either the bat or ball this
Friday could swing things
round a bit in this one.
Darley Pride have a good
chance for a win and possible top position when they
resume their match against
Melton West Saints at Shane
OBrien Reserve. Melton
West were sent into bat
by Darley Pride and were
restricted to 7/39 off their
20 overs, whilst the Pride
amassed 4/88 from their 20.
This Saturday afternoon
the seniors all play BallaratRedan in a one-day match
with the 1st XI again at home
at Darley Park in a 50 over
a side match starting at
12:30pm. On Saturday morning Under 16 Gold travel to
Coronet City, and Under 14s
to East Ballarat, whilst Under 16 Blue will host a combine (Ballarat/Redan) with
Haddon. The Under 12s conclude their Round 3 matches
on Friday evening.

The previous week saw

the C1 and C5 teams being
washed out and C3 playing
in windy and miserable
conditions at Navigators, to
record a close win 19-18. The
B Grade team also had a win
up against Napoleons.
This week was the complete
opposite, with the sun
shining and the temperature
gauge showing 30 plus
degrees by 11.00am.
B Grade played their home
match against Mt Clear at
Buninyong. The doubles
started with Joel Bertoncello
and
Juulke
Castelijn
going down 6-4 but then
Lachlan Furlong and Owen
Robertson won their game
6-4, making the scores even.
Lachlan and Owen also won
their singles. Unfortunately
Mt Clear were that little bit
stronger on the day, and
Ballan were defeated 25-29.

C1 played in Ballan
up
against
Napoleons.
Winning 3 out of the 4 sets.
Nicholas
Jennings
and
Lachlan Owens had a good
day winning both their
doubles. Starting the day
with a win together 6-1 and
then Nicholas and Emily
Tabb winning 6-3. Lachlan
and Mitchell Furlong had
another win 6-1 to secure
the win on the day. Ballan
defeated Napoleons 19 - 11.
C3 also played at Ballan
against
Gordon
with
Ben Campey having an
outstanding day winning
both his doubles with Adam
Furlong and Jessica Tabb
6-0. Adam and Luke Hallett
had another win 6-4 which
secured the victory for
Ballan 22-10.
C4 played Warrenheip with
Daniel Mulgrew and Tully
Bryan-Wakeling
having
a good win 6-1. William
Greenock and Rachel Young
had some close games and
Ballan just couldnt get over
the line in the end, going
down 15-19.
