Issue 11/2006

2 Indroduction
2.1 ATCA stands for Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture
ATCA MGW has been designed for deployment in all types of networks, since it supports the transport
of user traffic on time division multiplex (TDM), asynchronous transfer mod (ATM) or Internet protocol
(IP) based backbones. It features a wide range of media handling capabilities for processing user
traffic for services as handover, insertion of tones/announcements, CS data services, multi-party
calles/conferencing, etc. User data is also, if necessary, converted between the different transport
modes.

2.2 The following types of MGW configurations are covered

CS MGW: as an interface to radio only

PSTN MGW: as an interface to PSTN only
Combined CS/PSTN MGW : as interface to both radio and PSTN
AAL2 Switching (Transit GW): with an independent AAL2 no dial switch functionality and
without any control of the MSC-Server
IMS MGW (future)

MGCF: MGW Control Function

CSCF : Call Session Function
AAL2: ATM-Adaption-Layer2
SIP: Session Initiation Protocol

16 slots on the frond side and 14 slots on the back side are possible
Midplane for slots 1 through 14 is responsible for the interworking of frond and back side
Blind blend are necessary on free spaces air canalization
Wight of one frame ~ 25Kg
The figure below demonstrates the resulting MGW configuration:
Such a configuration, supporting all three transport options (TDM, ATM/AAL2, and IP) with maximum
call capacity completely occupies one 16 slot shelf.

7.1 HUGE always mandatory
One pair of Hub Cards M:HUGE (Hub card Gigabit Ethernet), equipped with FE electrical
for Interface each (O&M interface).
And can have maximum 2 GE interfaces.

7.1.1 M:RTMETH always mandatory

Backplane module with 2 external GE and 1 FE (electrical for OAM) interface
7.2 GPP970D (SPE) always mandatory
One pair of SPE/CPE Cards (end point for H.248) have following functions:
Signaling and Call Control Engines for signaling gateway
signaling back-haul*
call processing on the MGW (end point for H.248)
The OAM control engine and switching fabric, based on internal switching on MAC addresses,
according to standards and similar to external IP switching, clock generator and 2 GE(Giga
Ethernet) ports for IP)

7.3 LICAIP4 for IP and ATM always redundant

High speed line interface cards for different technologies: basically same HW for IP and ATM
cards, first release with IP via AAL5, second release w. IP via GE. One pair of IP line interface
cards (M:LICAIP4) and ATM interface cards (M:LICIP4) equipped with 4 STM-1 interfaces.
Hint: Mixing of IP and ATM interfaces in the same card is not permitted.

7.3.1 M:RTMEO
Backplane module with Electrical Optical Converter for STM-1

7.4 LICTDM always redundant

High speed TDM line interface cards, incudes A i/f and modern digital echo canceller (G168)
DSP (digital special processor); STM-1 channelized with TDM-E1 via VC12(Virtuel container).
One pair of TDM line interface cards (M:LICTDM), equipped with4 STM-1 interfaces each
(PSTN interface): S50043-Q75-X 1

7.4.1 LICTDM with DEC function always redundant

The LICTDM module include the echo cancel for PSTN connections: S50043-Q75-X101
7.4.2 M:RTMEO
Backplane module with Electrical Optical Converter for STM-1

7.5 MSBM
Media Streaming Board transcodes cards with full media handling functionality through realtime download of SW on the DSPs, thus identical HW independent of the download function
(special announcements conferencing, tones, cs-data inter-working, LI, TrFO). Six MSB-M`s,
five of which are active and one being the redundant card. The mounting position for the
redundant MSB card is S012.Each MSB-M provides 13 conferences.
N:1 redundancy e.g. 5:1 is the maximum configuration with six MSB-Ms

7.6 Dummy Modules

All not used modules plug pos (front- and backside) of the frame have to be filled with
blindplates. MUs will follow and the MU template will be modified
*Back-haul - In wireless network technology, to transmit voice and data traffic from a cell site to a
switch, i.e., from a remote site to a central site.

9 Cabling for GE and STM1 ports

There are only 2 Cable groups necessary for MGW: CG OP and OD. With CG OP the optical
cables from all LIC cards go to IDF (FO adapter or splitter in the equipped panel) and from HUGE
cards go to GE holder. The CG OD passes those optical cables from IDF or Holder to ODF.
Cable manual RV OP describes the variance 3700-3705 for electrical OAM cable pairs and GE
cables to IDF. For LIC to IDF (FO adapter/Splitter) cables, the single mode optical cable variance
12304-12311 is used based on with or without monitoring functionality. Cabling for each STM1 port is
necessary.
Cable manual RV OD describes the variance 2700-2705 for OAM and GE cables from IDF to ODF.
The STM1 interface cables from IDF to ODF use the variance 12801-12811 depending on the
monitoring functionality and the plug-in cable type selection depends on the optical coupling type
between LSH and SCPC/SA/FCPC/LSH at the ODF side.

The following MU is release for the cabling of MGW
