There are three /inds of wine which are e*ce""ent9 name"y%
that which is made from mo"asses%

There are a"so various other /inds made from the ;uice of
the pa"myra and date tree% and /nown by various names according
to their substance and p"ace of production. They are a"" dec"ared to
be e<ua""y appropriate in the worship of the -evata (().
1owsoever it may have been produced% and by whomsoever it
is brought% the wine% when purified% gives to the worshipper a""
siddhi. There are no distinctions of caste in the ta/ing of wine so
sanctified (3). Meat% again% is of three /inds% that of anima"s of the
waters% of the earth% and of the s/y. .rom wheresoever it may be
brought% and by whomsoever it may have been /i""ed% it gives%
without doubt% p"easure to the -evas (:). =et the desire of the
discip"e determine what shou"d be offered to the -evas.

Those which are without bones are of midd"e <ua"ity% whi"st those
which are fu"" of bones are of inferior <ua"ity. The "atter may%
however% if well fried% be offered to the -evi (E8F).
There are a"so three /inds of parched food% superior% midd"e% and
inferior. The e*ce""ent and p"easing /ind is that made from !ha"i
rice%

white as a moonbeam% or from bar"ey or wheat% and which has
been fried in c"arified 7sr.

The midd"ing variety is made of fried
paddy.
7G /inds of fried grain are inferior (981C). Meat% 7u. .% and.
parched food% fruits and roots% or anything e"se offered to the -evata

wine without !huddhi% as a"so pu;a and tarpana (without !huddhi)%
become fruit"ess% and the -evata is not propitiated (1(). The drin/ing
of wine without !huddhi is "i/e the swa""owing of poison. The

@ 2nother chec/ upon indiscriminate wine8drin/ing% for it cannot be indu"ged in
unti" !huddhi is obtained% prepared% and eaten with the necessary rites.

The a""usion here is to the three c"asses of women who might be !ha/tis+ !viya
(oneJs own wife)% ,ara/iya (the wife of another)% and the !adharani (one who is
common). This Tantra (according to the present te*t) discountenances !ha/tis of
the second and third /ind% and ordains that the !ha/ti shou"d be the wife of the
!adha/a (worshipper).

preparations for a great ya;na (sacrifice)% but purpose"y neg"ected to invite !hiva.
!ati went to the ya;na% and% hearing 1er father abuse 1er 1usband% whom !he
great"y "oved% was so affected that !he there and then fe"" down and died. >hen
!hiva heard% of this% fire f"ashed from 1is three eyes% which too/ the terrib"e form of
$hairava. The sacrifice was destroyed. !hiva too/ up the dead body of !ati% and
roamed% and sat with it in abstracted grief on Iai"asa and inert% for 1is power of
!ha/ti had gone from 1im. >ith the withdrawa" of 1is divine force (,ra/riti) the
wor"d was overspread by -emonsM 5.5 given up to sin. To cause !hiva to save the
wor"d% Vishnu with 1is discus cut into fifty8two pieces the body of !ati% which fe"" in
fifty8two different p"aces of pi"grimage /nown as the Maha8,itha8sthanas% and the
ce"estia"s sent Iama% the Aod of =ove% te empt !hiva from his great yoga. 2s a resu"t
the Areat Aod was reunited with 1is !ha/ti% but Iama himse"f was /i""ed by the fire
of 1is anger manifested in a f"ash of fire from !hivaJs centra" eye. Madana (Iama)
was burnt to ashes% and then became /nown as 2nanga% the bodi"ess one. 2s a"ready
e*p"ained% the ,ithas are the fifty8two p"aces of pi"grimage where the fifty8two
various parts of the body of the Aoddess !ati fe"" when it was cut to pieces by the
discus of 4ishnu% Thus the right and "eft breasts fe"" at Ga"andhara {supra} and
Rama8giri% where the Aoddess is worshipped as Tripura8Ma"ini. The organs of
generation fe"" at the ce"ebrated Tantri/a centre Iama8rupa (supra), in 2ssam% where
the Aoddess is worshipped as Iama/hya -evi. The upper and midd"e parts of the
body% the hands and fingers% the right and "eft buttoc/s% be""y% nave"% thighs% feet% toes
(some at Ia"i8ghat)% s/e"eton% hair% etc.% fe"" at other ,ithas% and at each of which the
-evi is worshipped under different names% and is accompanied by a !hiva or

arghya with the image or se"f of That% and having become the
/u"Pmrita%: b"ossom in me ? (40).
$ring into this sacred vesse"% which is fu"" of wine% essence of
ambrosia produced from the essence of a"" that is in this wor"d% and
containing a"" /inds of taste (:1).
May this cup of se"f% which is fi""ed with the nectar of se"f% =ord%
be sacrificed in t"ie .ire of the !upreme Self (4).
1aving thus consecrated the wine with the Mantra% thin/ of the
union7E in it of !adOshiva and $hagavatiF and wave "ights and
burning incense8stic/s before it79 (:3).
This is the consecration of the !hri8pPtra1C in Iau"i/a worship.
>ithout such purification the discip"e is gui"ty of sin% and the
worship is fruit"ess11 (::). The wise one shou"d then% according to
the ru"es prescribed for the

is that the wine is converted into that by the mere ta/ing of which a man becomes
