TOWARD YOUR CAREER IN HEALTHCARE.
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women killing more women than all forms of cancer combined.
In fact, Hispanic women are likely to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than non-Hispanics, and
African American women have almost twice the risk of stroke.
Yet,thereisalackofdiversityamongfemalehealthcareprovidersinourcountry.

Why are these scholarships for women from culturally diverse racial
or ethnic backgrounds?
Macys and Go Red For Women

see the desperate need for healthcare

providers from diverse backgrounds, cultures and races who understand
diverse cultures.
The demand on healthcare continues to increase, but the number of qualied
racially and ethnically diverse nurses and physicians lags behind.
By providing scholarships to diverse women, we hope to address some of the
healthcare disparities that may lead to cardiovascular disease.
Why is racial and ethnic diversity in healthcare important?
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women
in America, and those from diverse racial and ethnic
backgrounds are at a higher risk than Caucasian women.
Women from diverse racial and ethnic groups are
disproportionately affected by heart disease and often
confront barriers to diagnosis and care, receive lower-
quality treatment and experience worse health outcomes
than their Caucasian counterparts.
The lack of diversity of medical students and healthcare
professionals coupled with ineffective cultural
competency training continues to produce
treatment environments that are biased and
contribute to health disparities.
