!oin! to reinstall your operatin! system because of
problems& up!radin! your current $ersion& or are you
installin! an operatin! system on a new computer@ ,a1e
sure that you ha$e the new operatin! system install
pro!ram< 5indows and ,AC reDuire that you purchase a
C4 or 434 8om-s.< 7buntu and other +inu? are free and
can be installed from a Gash dri$e too<
Step ,( =a!> up your data. If you are reinstallin! your
operatin! system& it is li1ely that you will need to wipe
the dis1< %ac1 up your data before doin! so& as
e$erythin! on the dis1 will be destroyed< If you are simply
up!radin!& it is o1ay to s1ip this step& but it is ad$isable
to sa$e at least the most important Hles on your
computer<
Step 0( )o/pletely :ipe all infor/ation fro/ t5e
5ard dis!. This will insure that you do not carry problems
o$er into the new install< =or instructions on how to do

all data on your entire hard dis1< So completely wipin! it
prior to installation is unnecessary<
Step 4( =oot up. Turn on your computer and Duic1ly
enter the boot menu< The ownerEs manual for your

computer or motherboard should ha$e instructions on
how to do this< It will show on the screen for a breif
moment too< Select the dri$e that contains the setup dis1
-and be sure you ha$e inserted it.< Sa$e the settin! and
e?it<
Step 4( Start t5e installation. It may ta1e the install
pro!ram a few minutes to load& this is normal< /nce it has
loaded& follow the onscreen instructions< If you are
installin! a new operatin! system on a new computer or
reinstallin! due to a problem& wipe the dis1< %e sure you
ha$e sa$ed e$erythin! that you would li1e to sa$e before
startin! this process<
Step 6( Sit ba!> and rela?. The installer may as1 you
for some information while itEs installin!& but for the most
part& Lust waitin! is o1ay< 0ear the end of the installation&
the installer will as1 you for last(minute information& li1e
your name& the name of the computer& si!n in name&
password& time #one& etc< 4o not be alarmed by this&
none of this information can be used to identify you& itEs
all for personal preference<
Step 7( Enter t5e produ!t ID. If you are installin! a
consumer operatin! system li1e 5indows& it will probably
reDuire you to enter a product I4< +oo1 at the bac1 of the
C4 case for the product I4< If you are installin! +inu?& this
does not apply to you<
Step 8( "eboot. /nce you reboot& the computer will
Hnali#e e$erythin! and lo! you in< At this point& you may
need to install dri$ers< Insert any dis1s that came with
your computer or itEs parts that are 0/T an operatin!
system& and allow the dri$ers to be installed -if
necessary.<
Step 9( &llo: updates. This is especially important in
5indows< Allow the computer to see1 updates and install
them< +oo1 for a Mtop 60 thin!s to doM list for that
operatin! system<
Step +<( Install antivirus soft:are. If you are usin!
5indows without anti$irus software while on the web& you
are e?tremely $ulnerable to all 1inds of malicious
