Sport champions are claimed to be urged by fame and money in
the modern life. Some people think that this trend is positive
while others believe that this attitude negatively affects the
meaning of sports and the understanding of young generation.
My essay will shed light on both good and bad sides of this
trend.
On one hand, no sooner do people find sports as profit and
fame-making than they are more motivated to enter sports.
Because of seeing sports as low-paid jobs in the past, hardly did
people take part in this field despite their great potential.
However, with more awards presented, they find this area more
attractive and competition is fierce, which promises more talents
and outstanding performances. In addition, it is humans basic
instinct to desire for reputation and money. Whether people
work in sports or education, they expect their contributions to be
acknowledged and appreciated by others. It would be unfair to
deprive sportsmen of this privilege. Furthermore, with regard to
sacrifices that sportsmen have made to reach the zenith of
success, they deserve fame and money. Social reports have
shown that a successful sportsperson has to undergo hours of
training from the early age, give up on their learning at school,
other leisure activities, have no time for relationship and retire in
their thirties while other careers offer long-time devotion up to
seventy years.
Nevertheless, drawbacks are seen. With people being obsessed
with money and reputation, it is less likely for spectators to
enjoy the most spontaneous and excellent shows by
sportspersons. Moreover, people may turn to sports as a result
of money only, not true passion. That, again, undermines sports
themselves. Sadly enough, there have been sportsmen crossing
the line of sportsmanship to win by all means. They have used
doping to achieve awards, like the case of Lance Armstrong.
Spectators are supposed to witness matches in which players
attacked their competitors secretly to score their goal. Being
imbued with such images of sports, the young generation are
less willing to participate in this field and even continue
committing illegal acts to obtain social recognition. It is time that
the emphasis on money and reputation should be balanced
along with fairness, ability and interest of spectators.
