Sending good cheer
BRMS students send
cards to troops, collect
for WISE
BIG RAPIDS — This time of
year, the focus of middle school
students is often on holiday break
and what kind of presents they’ll
be getting for Christmas.
For Big Rapids Middle School
students, however, the focus of the
holiday season has been spreading
cheer to troops serving their
country and donating to those less
fortunate.
The BRMS student council has
spent the last couple of weeks
constructing holiday cards for both
troops who have been wounded in
combat and those serving in Iraq.
A total of 572 cards were
constructed over the course of
three days by students in fifth
through eighth grades. The cards
were sent to the American Red
Cross out of Maryland, which
will send the cards to soldiers in
active duty or wounded in combat,
BRMS special education teacher
and student council advisor Grace
Engle said.
The idea to send out cards was the
result of a brainstorming session
by the student council, President
Kelly Taylor said.
“We wanted to make them feel like
they are wanted and appreciated,”
she said. “If they can’t be with
their families during the holidays,
they should get something. We
wanted to show that we all care,
not just their families.”
Being able to send out an
inspiring message to the troops is
important, BRMS student council
Vice President Chris Poland said,
but also is the epitome of what
student council members should
do.
“It sets a good example for the rest
of the school by showing initiative
to do something like this,” he
said. “We were nominated as
student council members to lead.
If we start something like this
up, people will follow for a good
cause.”
The students will continue to do
charitable works all the way up to
winter break.
Student council currently is
organizing a “Links 4 a Happy
Holiday” contest in which students
can purchase decorative paper
links constructed by student
council members for 5 cents each.
After being purchased, students
hang the links in their grade’s
hallway. Whichever class has the
most links in its hallway will win
a prize, with the money raised
going to the Women’s Information
Service Inc. shelter.
The giving nature of students is
not surprising to Engle, who is
continually impressed by their
philanthropic efforts.

students,” she said. “They see a
need for something and they find a
way to make it happen. We’ve had
parents send in extra money for
the WISE donation because they
thought it was such a great idea.”
BRMS Principal Russ Greenleaf
said the student council’s effort
speaks volumes about all of the
students at the school.
“They care a great deal and are
a very conscientious of what’s
going on around them,” he said.
“We know as a staff that our kids
are caring. To see them take the
initiative on these projects is
reassuring.”
Spectrum Health
Hospital to host blood
drive

REED CITY — Michigan Blood,
formerly known as Michigan
Community Blood Centers, will
hold a blood drive with Spectrum
Health Reed City Hospital.
The drive will take place from
9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday
on the blood bus, which will be
parked in front of the hospital,
located at 300 North Patterson
Road in Reed City.
First time donors are more than
welcome. The entire donation
process (registration, a brief health
screening, blood collection and
time for refreshments) takes 45 to
60 minutes. It takes only about 10
minutes to collect blood.
Any healthy person 17 years of age
or older who weighs 110 pounds or
more may be eligible to give blood
every 56 days. Donors should
bring photo ID or two pieces of
non-photo ID with them to the
drive.

Teen
(NewsUSA) - According to the
National Council of Juvenile
Court Judges, each year nearly
3.2 million students are victims of
online bullying, a serious Internet
safety concern. To address these
issues, Boys & Girls Clubs of
America has partnered with Sprint
to promote online safety resources
for teens and parents.
Sprint’s 4NetSafety program
aims to open the lines of
communication about Internet
safety between young people and
the adults who care for them.
The online resource offers free
tools from experts that address
the perils that young people
commonly encounter online and
encourage positive dialogue about
Internet safety.
“Sprint is pleased to be entering
into this partnership with Boys
& Girls Clubs of America,” said
Debby Ballard, Sprint’s director
of community affairs. “Internet
safety is an area that is very
important to Sprint, as evidenced
by our 4NetSafety program, and
our partnership with BGCA allows
us to add to and raise additional
awareness about these valuable
resources.”
A recent survey of young people
revealed some startling statistics
about how parents are supervising
their children’s online time. More
than 53 percent say their parents
never ask them about whom they
are talking to on the Internet, and
over half say their parents never
surf the Internet with them.
“The Internet can be a wonderful
resource, but it has always been
our goal to teach our youth how
to navigate the Web safely and
appropriately,” said Dan Rauzi,
senior director of technology
services and programs at BGCA.
“Sprint and BGCA teamed up to
raise awareness about a prime
concern of ours -- the importance
of a healthy and safe virtual life for
America’s youth.”
Sprint and Boys & Girls Clubs of
America offers the following tips
to parents to help keep their teens
safer online.
1. Remind your teen that what they
post stays online forever.
2. Ask to see their profile page.
3. Tell your chid to only add
friends they know in real life.
4. Have them use a nickname that
doesn’t identify their location,
gender or age.
5. Tell them not to post plans or
whereabouts on a site or page.
6. If your or someone else’s child is
harassed or bullied online, report
it to your local law-enforcement
agency or call the CyberTipline at
800-843-5678.
Social Networking: Not
Just for Kids Anymore
(NewsUSA) - Many assume that
those Americans who are tweeting,
updating Facebook profiles and
uploading YouTube videos are in
their teens. But when it comes to
social networking, it’s not teens,
but their parents who are driving
growth.
According to the Pew Internet
& American Life Project’s 2008
tracking survey, the number of
adults with online profiles more
than quadrupled after 2005.
In fact, more adults use social
networking sites than teens.
But adults who indulge in chatting,
tweeting and updating their
Facebook status at work might find
themselves without a job. While
many employers allow workers to
participate on social networking
sites (especially to make business
connections), others have formed
strict policies against LinkedIn,
Facebook, MySpace, Digg, Twitter
and similar sites.
And don’t think that employees
can simply tweet on the sly.
Many businesses are now using
employee-monitoring software
products, such as Spector CNE
Investigator (www.spectorcne.
com), to quickly and easily
determine who’s goofing off,
leaking company information,
surfing Web sites or making
off-topic Google searches. The
software records all instant
messages, chat conversations,
emails, Web sites visited,
programs run, files downloaded,
files copied to removable media,
and keystrokes typed. In addition,
Spector CNE Investigator takes
screen snapshots, so employers
can watch their employees’ online
activities in the sequence that they
were performed.
While outright bans may seem
harsh, employees should do work
while at work -- few employers
want to pay workers to play online
games or update their Facebook
status. And yet, according to
a survey conducted by an IT
research firm, Nucleus Research,
77 percent of the employees with
Facebook accounts check them
during business hours, with 87
percent having no work-related
reason for doing so.
Some studies suggest that
social networking may improve
productivity, so long as visits
remain brief and account for less
than 20 percent of an employee’s
worktime. But no one wants to
lose their job because they can’t
stay away from Twitter.
Employees with a social
networking problem might want
to set strict limits for themselves,
like restricting Facebook time to
10 minutes a day. If employees
are using it for more than an
appropriate amount of time,
employers will know it if they are
monitoring social network usage
with Spector CNE.
