If blood was like water, it would drain away through cuts and grazes.
Instead, small leaks are
quickly plugged, bringing bleeding to a halt. This
happens because blood contains a chemical called fibrinogen. When blood
vessel is cut, the fibrinogen turns into another chemical called fibrin, which
creates a maze of sticky strands. Blood cells get trapped in the strands,
making a solid plug called a clot. Once a clot has formed, the skin
underneath starts to heal. Eventually, the clot dries out to form a scab,
which later falls off. By this time, the injury has fully recovered.
(Adapted from Reader's Digest Amazing Facts)
What is a scab?
A A dried blood clot that eventually dries out and falls off.
B A chemical substance which creates a maze of sticky strands.
C A substance called fibrinogen that heals the skin and will fall off.
D A strand of dried blood clot that heals the cut on the skin.
What happens to the remarnlng water in the sludge?
A It is made into fuel gas and fertilizer.
B It is sprinkled over filter bed.
C It is released into the river.
D It is fed to microbes.
At a sewage treatment plant, screens and settling tanks first remove
the larger object, grit
and sludge. The sludge is further processed
to make
fuel gas and fertilizer. The water remaining is sprinkled over filter bed
containing microbes that feed on any remaining waste. The water is then
clean enough to be released into the river.

The Sun is an enormous mass of gases made up of a very hot core
that is surrounded by a succession of cooler layers. ln the core,
the temperature is around 36 million degrees Fahrenheit, but the surface
reaches
just
10,000 degrees. On top of the core there is a radiant zone,
which emits radiation to the outside. This is followed by the convection
zone, where huge columns of gases are formed and rise and fall. Finally,
there is a surface, known as the photosphere, which is a thin layer. On top
of the photosphere, there is another thin layer called the chromosphere,
which is the outer gaseous layer of the Sun. This is followed by the solar
corona, which is a very hot zone. These two zones can be considered
the Sun's atmosphere.
(Adapted fromEssential Atlas of Physics & Chemistry)
Which of the following is the convection zone of the Sun?
Which of the followirrg is true about the Sun?

B Columns of gases rise and fall in the hot core.
C The thin chromosphere layer is a very hot zone.

In the centre of the retina of the eye is a small yellow
area (the fovea)
where each cell has its own connection to the brain. In other parts
of th6
retina, many cells have to share a connection. The fovea lets us see in
detail, but this only happens at the centre of the image. To make up for this,
the brain moves the eyes back and forth to scan the whole image.
7 Which of the following statements is not true of the retina?
A The fovea allows a detailed vision but only at the centre of the brain.
B In other parts of the retina, a connection is shared by many celrs.
C Every cell is connected to the brain on its own in the fovea.
D The fovea is located in the centre of the retina.
Most large boats are driven under the water by a screw propeller
with
slowly turning blades to force the ship forward. This system is powerful,
but
the resistance of the water slows down the boat. This is known as drag.
Hydrofoils solve this problem
with special wings or foils attached to the hull
by struts. The struts move underwater, working like plane
wings to lift the
boat. Because only the foils dip in the water, hydrofoils can travel very fast.
8 From the text above, we can conclude that hydrofoils
A elimin ate the use of propellers
B provide the boat with wings to fly
c enable the boat to move underwater
D move fast by minimising water resistance

Fold is a wavelike form in layered sedimentary rock strata that results
from deformational
processes in the earth's crust. Basin-shaped folds in which
the beds of rock dip towards each other are known as synclines. Those in
which the beds of rock are folded into an arch shape are known as anticlines.
More complex folds result where the rock strata are subjected to intense
horizontal
pressures.

vitamins are complex organic molecules that serve as co-enzymes.
This means that vitamins activate enzymes and assist with their function.
For example, the presence
of Vitamin 81 or Thiamine is essential to the
function of two enzymes that catalyze the first step in aerobic respiration.
Without Thiamine, aerobic respiration cannot proceed.
Because vitamins
perform
such vital functions and generally
cannot be synthesised by the
body, a daily diet should include the proper
amounts of all vitamins.

Mimivirus which was discovered in the United Kingdom has the characteristic
coat of a virus but, at 400 nanometres across, it is larger than some bacteria.
Now researches have sequenced the virus's genome and uncovered more
surprises. The conventional view is that viruses are parasites that are totally
dependent on the cells they invade. According to most definitions of life,
they are not even living. However, the mimivirus might
just
be alive: its genome
suggests it carries out functions never before seen in viruses, such as making
its own RNA and proteins.

C They have the same coat.

When the air in an air balloon is heated by the burners, the balloon rises.
As the air in the balloon cools, the balloon sinks. Many modern balloons
comprise a sphere filled with helium for extra buoyancy. As the pilot turns on
the burners, the air in the outer envelope is heated, causing the balloon to rise.
Then he throws ballast overboard and the balloon keeps rising. To release
the
gas, the pilot opens the valve at the top of the helium sphere. This causes
the balloon to descend. Clouds in the sky above, further force the balloon
to descend.

Today, wasps are being trained to sniff out narcotics in the future.
Scientists at the University of Georgia in the United States are working on
methods for wasps to detect hidden explosives. The wasps are placed in
a tube equipped with a Web camera remotely connected to a laptop. When
the tube is sent over an area under investigation and the wasps detect the
odours of explosives, they swarm in the direction of those odours. Their
movement within the tube sends back a computerised signal, enabling the
human trackers to locate the explosives.
