Male readers to The Blaylock Wellness Report may take a look at the headline this month and dismiss it saying, This does not apply to me. Not so fast! It is true that breast cancer is a disease that affects mostly women, but men are also victims. As the American Cancer Society notes, breast cancer occasionally occurs in men. Many people do not realize that men have breast tissue and that they can develop breast cancer. In 2005, approximately 1,700 men were diagnosed with the disease. Still, it is considered a female disease and will get the attention of women more than men. If youre a male, you may want to share this information with your wife, girlfriend, sister, or other loved one who has a breast cancer risk. Interestingly, albeit alarmingly, cancers seem to occur commonly in husbands and wives. That is, when the wife has breast cancer, the husband is much more likely to develop prostate cancer and vice versa. The reason is a mystery, but there are several possibilities to explain this anomaly. The most common explanation is that they eat similar types of foods known to increase the risk of both cancers. It may be that both cancers are caused by the same cancer-causing virus (oncogenic virus), or that both are exposed to a common household toxin or pesticide. Or it may simply be that both cancers increase dramatically with aging. There is a common denominator in dozens of studies: There is a very strong correlation between breast cancer and nutrition. While good nutrition is a powerful ally, bad nutrition not only strongly promotes the development of both cancers, it also determines your chances of survival. Many people make the mistake of depending on a single nutritional supplement (usually one recently made popular by the media) rather than changing their diet. If you are in a particularly high-risk group, including having a close relative who had one of Edited by Russell L. If you ignore the benets of supplements, you do so at your own peril; they add an essential layer of protection to a good diet. Supplements, in my recommended doses, act to specically inhibit enzymes or other mechanisms needed by cancer cells either to develop or to grow and invade your body. I will be tackling the issues of prostate cancer and breast cancer in two separate newsletters. This month, I will address the concerns of breast cancer. Next month, I will be covering prostate cancer. The Ravages of Breast Cancer While breast cancer rarely strikes men, the destruction it wreaks on families and friends affects everyone. Breast cancer is the leading type of cancer in women. Of the 180,000 women who developed breast cancer in 1994, sadly, 45,000 died of the disease. This should not have happened. Most doctors will tell you that the best chance for a cure is to detect the disease early, which is basically true. Unfortunately, the method they have chosen to detect breast cancer, the mammogram, also causes breast cancer, especially in women who are at the greatest risk. Studies have shown that mammograms increase the risk of developing breast cancer from 1 percent to 3 percent a year (depending on the technique used), which means that if you religiously have a mammogram every year for 10 years, you increase your risk 10 percent to 30 percent. Some radiation experts feel the danger is much higher. Radiation experts agree that the breast is one of the areas of the body most sensitive to cancers caused by radiation exposure. As women age, they are more likely to have cancer cells in their breast. By age 50 the gure reaches 45 percent. This does not mean that 45 percent of 50-year-olds will develop breast cancer, because in most women these cancer cells remain dormant. What it does mean is that these women are at high risk of spurring these cancer cells to full activity. Breast cancers are either estrogen positive or estrogen negative. Estrogen negative breast cancers are the most deadly. Most women know that hormone replacement therapy can increase their risk of developing breast cancer, yet few are aware that the type of estrogen matters. Estradiol, the most powerful form, is associated with a signicant increased risk, and is the form found in Premarin, the common hormone replacement. In addition, this unnatural form of estrogen has a number of neurological side effects. Other forms of estrogen, such as estrone and estriol, which are used in natural hormone therapy, actually reduce breast cancer risk and may reduce its growth. A number of plant avonoids (chemicals found in fruits and vegetables) have very weak estrogen-like effects, which make them major players in breast cancer prevention and even in treatment. Plant avonoids block the estrogen receptors on breast ductal tissue, preventing the more powerful (cancer-causing) estrogen from taking action. Effects of Bad Nutrition Women who eat seared meats every day increase their risk of breast cancer by over 300 percent. This is because burning meat during cooking (as with cooking over a grill or at high heat) creates powerful cancer-causing compounds called heterocyclic amines. Likewise, eating foods containing nitrites (a food preservative) also increases breast cancer risk. In the stomach, nitrites form carcinogenic compounds called nitrosoamines. Eating a combination of healthful green and yellow vegetables with meals neutralizes these compounds signicantly. Women with DNA repair problems (that is those with a strong family history) are also much more susceptible to the cancer-causing effects of bad nutrition as well. This means, for example, they are even more likely to develop breast cancer should they eat pan cooked or grilled red meats every day or drink alcohol every day. Studies have shown that a diet high in meats dramatically increases the risk of many types of cancer. There are several reasons for this, besides the carcinogens mentioned above. Iron promotes cancer development as well as the growth and spread of existing cancers. Meats have one of the highest absorbable forms of iron, with about 80 Page 2 The Blaylock Wellness Report March 2007 percent to 90 percent being absorbed. Vegetables, such as spinach and kale, can have high iron levels, but the avonoids in the vegetables prevent the iron from being absorbed, and may explain why mixing vegetables with meats reduces risk. Likewise, studies have shown that omega-6 fats strongly promote the growth and spread of tumors. These are oils such as corn, canola, safower, sunower, peanut, and soybean. Americans generally consume about 50 times more of these oils than are needed for health. Such high levels are strong promoters of cancer. Deciencies in a number of nutrients, either alone or in combination, have been shown to dramatically increase the risk of breast cancer in women, especially deciencies in vitamin E and selenium. When taken together, studies involving large numbers of women have shown a 60 percent reduction in breast cancer. When they are combined with a proper diet, results are even better. There is at least theoretical evidence that uoride can promote breast cancer growth, since studies have shown that uoride in drinking water promotes the growth of a number of cancers. Therefore, it should be avoided. Mercury from dental amalgam llings, vaccines containing mercury, and air pollution can also promote the growth of cancers and interfere with immunity. Probiotics and Breast Cancer There is growing evidence that the friendly bacteria in your colon play an important role in protecting you against breast cancer, as well as other cancers. Estrogen from the blood is extracted by the liver and excreted into the GI tract in bile. Within the bowel, the estrogen is metabolized into one of several compounds. If you have a good supply of probiotic organisms in your colon, the estrogen is metabolized into a compound called 2-hydroxyestrone, which has been shown to inhibit the development of breast cancer. If these important bacteria are in low supply or missing, another compound called 16- alpha-hydroxyestrone is formed instead. This is a powerful promoter of breast cancer and greatly increases risk. This explains studies that have shown that women who take antibiotics have a signicantly higher risk of developing breast cancer. Antibiotics are notorious for killing important, helpful colon bacteria along with the bad. Studies have shown that these compounds also either promote (as is the case of 16-alpha- hydroxyestrone) or inhibit (as is the case of 2- hydroxyestrone), other types of cancers including cervica, endometrial, prostate, colon, and head and neck cancers. They also increase the growth of viruses known to produce breast cancer in experimental animals and possibly viruses that cause cancer in humans. Indole-3 carbinol (from broccoli) has been shown to increase the ratio of 2-hydroxyestrone to 16-alpha- hydroxyestrone by 16-fold, thus strongly inhibiting the development of breast cancer. Indole-3 carbinol can also be purchased as a supplement. Genetic Risk of Breast Cancer A number of mutated genes have been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (BRACA-1, BRACA-2, ATM genes). Women who possess these genes have an increased risk of developing breast cancer, have a poorer prognosis, and are more sensitive to breast radiation exposure. One of the many functions of these genes when normal is to repair damaged DNA. Our DNA is under a constant barrage of free radicals, which are increased by chronic inammatory diseases (diabetes, autoimmune diseases, heart disease, etc.), heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum, uoride, etc.) and industrial chemicals and pesticides/herbicides. In most of us, 98 percent of the damage is repaired by DNA repair enzymes. People with mutated repair genes have difculty performing this vital function, and as a result, they have signicantly higher cancer rates. Mutated genes, passed on from generation to generation, explain high-risk cancer families. The good news is that nutrition not only plays a major role in protecting our genes, but can signicantly increase DNA repair as well. Vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, quercetin, ginkgo biloba, resveratrol, curcumin, glutathione, and alpha-lipoic March 2007 The Blaylock Wellness Report Page 3 acid are all important protectors of DNA. Folate, vitamin B-12, vitamin B-6, and niacinamide are also key in repairing DNA. All of these nutrients are known to reduce cancer risk in humans and experimental animals. Even modest alcohol consumption dramatically increases a womans risk of developing breast cancer by as much as 292 percent. Folate, at a dose of 800 micrograms a day, signicantly reduces this risk. Exercise Is Key Numerous studies have found a sedentary lifestyle to be a signicant risk factor for breast cancer, and that women who exercise regularly have a signicantly lower risk. This is also true of other cancers. Exercise doesnt have to be aerobic. In fact, aerobic or other such extreme exercises are more likely to result in cancer, because they generate high levels of free radicals. Weight lifting, brisk walking or other resistance exercises done for 45 minutes six days a week is sufcient to lower your cancer risk. A considerable amount of research clearly shows that a plant extract called lignan plays a powerful role in preventing breast cancer. Lignans are found in axseed, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, broccoli and extra-virgin olive oil. In the colon, the friendly bacteria (probiotics) ferment the lignan to form two powerful anti- cancer compounds called enterolactone and enterodiol. These compounds inhibit the development and growth of a number of cancers including prostate, colon, and breast. Lignan inhibits cancer by suppressing cancer cell division and blocking estrogen receptors on breast cancer cells. It is an antioxidant and blocks essential blood vessels needed by the cancer. In addition, lignan lowers levels of a powerful cancer growth stimulator called insulin-like growth factor- 1 (IGF-1) while having no negative effects on normal cells. One of the dangers of cows milk from cows injected with genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH), is that the milk contains high levels of IGF-1, the powerful cancer growth promoter. Studies have shown that the levels are anywhere from 71 percent to 360 percent higher than normal. The IGF-1 found in the milk is identical to that in humans and studies have shown that it is not destroyed in the stomach. In fact a protein in the milk (casein) dramatically enhances absorption. A Finnish study (the Kuppio Breast Cancer Study) compared 194 women with breast cancer to 208 women free of the disease. It found that those with the highest level of enterolactone, both premenopausal and postmenopausal women, had a signicantly lower risk of developing breast cancer. In this same study, breast biopsies demonstrated that women with the highest levels of 16-alpha- hydroxyestrone had the highest incidence of breast cancer. The best source of lignan is ax ber, not ax oil. A number of companies sell ax lignan concentrate. Studies are in conict over the role of obesity and fat intake on breast cancer risk. After reviewing a number of them, I have concluded that the major harmful effects of obesity are from abdominal (visceral obesity) fat what is commonly referred to as a potbelly or beer gut. As I discussed in a previous newsletter, fat found deep within the abdomen (surrounding the intestines) is different from fat found under the skin (subcutaneous fat). Visceral fat secretes large amounts of inammatory chemicals called adipokines, which cause widespread chronic inammation throughout the body. Chronic inammation is the leading cause for all cancers, including breast cancer. Some people, while not appearing to be obese, have a lot of visceral fat. Experimental studies have shown that babies exposed to food containing excitotoxins (such as MSG, soy proteins, hydrolyzed proteins, carrageenan, aspartame, natural avors, etc.) produce excess visceral fat. Women with a lot of visceral fat are also more likely to develop metastasis of their cancers than those with lesser amounts. Special Fats and Breast Cancer Unknown to most people as well as many doctors, is the fact that fats can act as powerful Page 4 The Blaylock Wellness Report March 2007 March 2007 The Blaylock Wellness Report Page 5 pharmacological drugs. We now know that the type of fat that you eat is more important than the amount of fat you eat. The most dangerous fat of all is omega-6 oils. Omega fats promote chronic inammation and stimulate the growth, spread and invasion of cancers. Omega-6 fats can actually convert some cancers into very fast growing, aggressive cancers. I have reviewed a number of cancer center diet programs and have found that most encourage their patients to eat foods high in these cancer-promoting fats. Vegetables for Better Health Vegetables have been shown to signicantly reduce the incidence of breast cancer in both experimental animals and in humans. To a lesser extent, so have fruits. There are a handful of studies that failed to show anti- cancer benets but they were poorly done. For example, researchers counted foods such as potatoes as vegetables. While potatoes are technically vegetables, they have little or no anti-cancer effect. Also, many of the participants in these studies ate foods that contained high levels of omega-6 oils, aspartame, MSG, and other cancer- causing food additives. Studies where the entire diet was controlled and included healthy vegetables and low levels of omega-6 oils and food additives showed dramatic reductions in the risk of breast cancer. Vegetables contain hundreds of complex chemicals called avonoids. They are known to prevent cancers and to control the growth of existing cancers, and to do so with greater safety and effectiveness than conventional chemotherapy. Flavonoids work their magic, in part, as powerful and versatile antioxidants, and they are much more effective than the vitamins such as vitamin C, E and the carotenoids. Oncologists continue to tell their patients to avoid antioxidants and even to avoid eating vegetables, mistakenly thinking they will interfere with treatment. Studies have conrmed that this is not true. Moreover, they have shown that antioxidants, such as avonoids and special vitamin mixtures, greatly enhance the effectiveness of conventional treatments. I have observed, over the years, that people who have survived advanced cancers believed to be terminal either juiced virtually all their vegetables or ate very large amounts of nutrient-dense vegetables. New studies have shown that breast cancers are dependent on certain enzymes for their growth, such as tyrosine kinase, COX-2, LOX, NFkB, and phospholipase A2. Blocking these enzymes can often either stop cancer growth or make it disappear (through a process called apoptosis). A large number of the vegetable avonoids, such as quercetin, curcumin, apigenin, and luteolin, block these enzymes in cancer cells, but have no effect on normal cells. One enzyme, called aromatase, plays a major role in the growth and spread of a number of cancers, including breast and prostate cancers. This enzyme Cancer-Fighting Fats Think all fats are created equal? Think again. These fats are packed with cancer- fighting properties. Omega-3 Fats: These are fats found in sh, algae, and axseed, but omega-3 fats from axseed should be avoided, since humans cannot convert them properly and they can, in fact, be harmful. The most powerful form of omega-3 oil is its DHA component, which inhibits cancer in a number of ways. About 1,000 milligrams to 2,000 milligrams a day is sufcient. Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA): This is a special type of fat that reduces inammation, lowers breast cancer development, and melts visceral fat. The effective dose is 1,000 milligrams a day. Gamma-Linoleic Acid (GLA): This is another potent anti-cancer oil, extracted from evening primrose or borage plants. Studies have shown that it not only prevents breast cancer, it suppresses the growth of existing breast cancers. It can also enhance the effectiveness of tamoxifen against breast cancer. Take 1,000 milligrams a day. Page 6 The Blaylock Wellness Report December 2006 allows breast ductal tissue to produce estrogen locally in the ducts at levels 40 times higher than in the blood. Blocking aromatase, which converts testosterone into estrogen, inhibits breast cancer growth. The avonoid apigenin (from celery) has been shown to inhibit aromatase enzyme 8.7 times more powerfully than specially designed drugs. Quercetin (found in onions, teas, cranberries, etc.) inhibits it 1.5 times better. This enzyme also plays a major role in prostate cancers, and pharmaceutical companies are spending large sums of money to develop a drug that will inhibit this enzyme. DHA, from algae or sh oils, also inhibits many of these cancer-promoting enzymes and has been shown to signicantly inhibit the growth of cancer cells, especially breast cancer. It is interesting to note that soy (genistein) strongly stimulates aromatase activity, which explains the recent nding that soy extracts enhance the growth and spread of breast cancer. Preventing Cancer Spread Its been said that to best deal with the enemy, you must know the enemy. That makes good sense. Cancers kill by invading surrounding tissues and spreading throughout the body (metastasis). It is the failure of our body to contain the wayward cancer cells that causes the problem. One way cancer cells spread is by secreting large amounts of a group of enzymes called metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) that dissolve protein. Studies have shown that women whose tumors secrete large amounts of these enzymes have very aggressive cancers, the highest recurrence rate and a shorter survival. Inhibiting these enzymes dramatically reduces the spread of cancer and improves the patients prognosis. Several avonoids inhibit these enzymes. For example, luteolin (artichoke extract and celery) inhibits MMP-2, and curcumin inhibits MMP-9. Together they reduce this metastasis-promoting enzyme signicantly. Vitamin C (as magnesium ascorbate) also lessens the ability of cancer to spread. Why You Should Avoid Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners Because of cancer cells unusual metabolism, they are extremely dependent on sugar for their growth and spread. Sugar is a cancer fertilizer. You should eat only complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, and those only in moderation. Avoid starches like potatoes, since the body utilizes them as sugars. It is also important to avoid eating a lot of fruits. Even though they contain some useful avonoids, they also contain high levels of sugar. Some sugarless fruit extracts, such as blueberry extract, can be used. Raspberries are of special value, since they contain a very powerful anti- cancer avonoid called ellagic acid (you can also buy this as a concentrated extract). It is also important to avoid articial sweeteners, such as aspartame and Splenda. Aspartame has been shown to dramatically increase cancer development in a number of studies. And aspartame is metabolized in the body into formaldehyde, which continues to damage DNA over a very long time. Most people refuse to drink water because they say it tastes bad, but this is because of the high levels of chlorine that have been added. Drink only ltered or distilled water. To make it even healthier, you can add a small amount of magnesium to each glass about 20 milligrams. Once you drink pure water, you will begin to prefer it. Another drink that contains powerful anti-cancer avonoids (called catachins) is white tea. While green tea gets a lot of press, white tea has higher levels of the healthy avonoids and dramatically lowers levels of uoride and aluminum. Black tea has very high levels of these two cancer promoters. Page 6 The Blaylock Wellness Report March 2007 Eat Your Vegetables! Some vegetables are much more powerful than others in preventing and treating cancer. The best vegetables to prevent cancer include: Broccoli (especially broccoli sprouts) Brussels sprouts Chinese cabbage Celery Turnip greens Spinach Kale Parsley March 2007 The Blaylock Wellness Report Page 7 Drink two cups a day of concentrated tea. Here are some special supplements that can help defeat breast cancer. Diindolylmethane (DIM) 100 milligrams: This is a metabolic product of a compound found in broccoli (indole-3-carbinol). Studies in people have shown that it increases the level of the cancer-inhibiting 2-hydroxyestrone and lowers 16-alpha hydroxyestrone, which promotes breast cancer. Calcium-D-glucarate: This compound occurs naturally in humans and animals. Its main action is to enhance detoxication of carcinogenic compounds and to help the body eliminate them. In addition, calcium-D-glucarate inhibits the formation of cancers, especially breast cancers. Studies using human breast cancer have shown dramatic results. In one study, a combination of carotenoids (precursors of vitamin A found in green vegetables) and calcium D-glucarate reduced breast cancer formation by an astounding 70 percent. A number of trials are currently underway at major cancer centers such as M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to see if it is as effective as tamoxifen in preventing cancer. It has no signicant side effects, while tamoxifen has a number of dangerous side effects, including cancer. Finally, new research clearly shows that glutamate (an excitotoxin) powerfully stimulates the growth, invasion, and spread of a number of human cancers, including breast and prostate cancers. People who eat diets containing excitotoxic food additives, such as MSG, aspartame, hydrolyzed proteins, soy protein isolates, autolyzed yeast, and other disguised names for high glutamate products, are adding a potent cancer fertilizer to their diets. These studies clearly show that all cancer cells which researchers examined, including breast cancers, contain abundant glutamate receptors. Turning off these receptors increases the death of cancer cells, especially if combined with conventional treatments. Avoid food additives, and check food labels before purchasing products. Page 8 The Blaylock Wellness Report March 2007 Preventing Lymphoma by Diet In a previous newsletter, I reported on a study that found that lymphomas were increasing faster than any other type of malignancy in those under age 30 years. Shocking news to say the least. Yet, a series of studies clearly shows that nutrition is a powerful way to combat this increase risk. In one study, which looked at the diets of 591 people having a non-Hodgkin lymphoma compared to matched populations of the same age, sex, and other risk factors, found that those who had the highest intake of omega-3 fats (sh oils) had up to a 60 percent reduced risk of developing the cancer. Likewise, those with the highest vegetable intake, as measured by carotenoid levels, had a 40 percent reduction in risk, and those with the highest vitamin E intake (natural vitamin E) had a 60 percent reduction. Previous studies have linked high protein diet (especially red meats eaten rare) and high milk intake with signicantly increased risk of lymphomas. A particularly strong association was found between ber intake and reduced risk of lymphoma. Those who ate 14.4 grams of ber per thousand kilocalories (equal to a high- vegetable diet plus whole grains) experienced up to a 60 percent reduction in risk. In another study from the Mayo Clinic, it was shown that people who ate the most cruciferous vegetables (Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliower, etc.) reduced their risk of lymphoma by 42 percent. Zinc also lowered risk. Of the carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthans, lowered risk as much as 42 percent. Kale, spinach, and tomatoes are high in these carotenoids. In the previous study, they found that high calcium intake, no matter the source (supplements or milk), dramatically increased lymphoma risk. As with the link between prostate and breast cancer risk and calcium intake, it appears that the high calcium diets lower vitamin D-3, (2,000 IU a day) which normally suppresses these cancers. Higher vitamin D-3 may also protect against lymphomas. The important lesson to retain is that by eating a healthy diet and using appropriate supplements, one can avoid the risk of these dangerous cancers. Protecting the Body From Age-Related Breakdown Increasing evidence indicates that the baby boomers are heading for a health crisis. Why? Because of a lifetime of junk foods and unhealthy diets. Yet, new research offers hope for my generation. In a study published in the 2006 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers reported on a study of 643 women aged 65 years or older, which looked at the levels of three key nutrients. What they found was that low levels of these three nutrients was a predicted risk for these women of becoming disabled during the three year follow-up of the study. They found that women who had the lowest selenium, vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-12 levels also had the highest risk of becoming disabled during the three years of the study. A deciency in these three nutrients is of special concern because they play such a vital role in protecting cells from free-radical damage and in repairing DNA. Vitamins B-6 and B-12 also lower the homocysteine level, which is elevated in a number of diseases, including Alzheimers disease, heart disease, strokes, cancer, and birth defects. It also reduced the aging effects of diabetes on internal organs. Many scientists think that the healthy effects of red wines may be due to resveratrol. Unfortunately, the amount of useful resveratrol in red wines varies widely. Grapes grown at higher altitudes have higher levels. Gum Disease: Worse for Your Health Than Previously Thought Studies indicate that over 90 percent of people over age 13 have some form of periodontal disease (gum disease). The gure is 74.9 percent of those between the ages of 35 and 44 years, and 29 percent of males and 15 percent of females at these ages have advanced gum disease. Compelling research has linked gum disease with a higher risk of heart disease, and there is growing evidence that a number of other diseases may be linked with infected gums and tooth canals. Bad breath is an obvious warning sign. Receding gum with exposed roots, bleeding gums with brushing, and sore teeth should also raise alarm. New evidence links the use of uoride with increased rates and severity of gingivitis and periodontal disease. These studies show a considerable worsening of these gum diseases and an increase of oral cancers. This is because uoride causes DNA damage and activates inammatory mechanisms that worsen gum disease as well as trigger cancer development. Toothpaste has from 1,000 to 1,500 parts per million (ppm) uoride per tube and dental treatments use doses as high a 15,000 ppm. At these levels, cancer induction is proven. Several studies indicate that the use of antiseptic mouthwashes may do more harm than good. This is because they not only kill bad bacteria, but also the good (probiotics) bacteria that protect the teeth and gums. This is similar to antibiotics killing the colons good bacteria. Studies indicate that people normally have these benecial bacteria growing in and around their tooth canals. Fluoride kills the good bacteria. In one study, chewing probiotics (Lactobacillus species) protected against gingivitis. You can purchase chewable probiotics in most supplement stores. How to Lower Miscarriage Risk A study of thousands of pregnant women found that a high intake of fruits and vegetables could cut the risk of a woman having a miscarrage by half. Vitamins, omega-3 fats, and eating white meats rather than red meats also lowered the risk. In the past, obstetricians encouraged women to watch their weight during pregnancy. It is now known that women who are underweight during pregnancy increase their risk of miscarriage by 70 percent. Stress during pregnancy likewise increases the risk of miscarriage, so husbands be nice to your wives and avoid stressful encounters. Pesticide Exposure Strongly Linked to Parkinsons Disease Over the past several decades, studies have indicated that people exposed to higher levels of pesticides were more likely to develop Parkinsons disease and Alzheimers disease. Recent studies support this, especially a new study of some 143,000 people. Researchers found that those with the highest pesticide exposure had a 70 percent higher risk of developing Parkinsons disease than those with low exposure. So why wouldnt everyone who is exposed to pesticides develop this devastating disorder? It has been shown that those who develop the disease after exposure have a defect in a gene that controls detoxication of pesticides (p450 enzyme). The actual incidence of this gene defect is unknown. Studies in mice have shown that the commonly used pesticide rotenone, triggers the destruction of the same area in the brain known to cause the disease. In three cases of a sudden onset of Parkinsons disease in people exposed to household pesticides reported in the journal Neurology, it was shown that the dose of the pesticide needed to trigger the Parkinsons was incredibly small. Nutritional strengthening of the detoxication systems (see previous newsletter) is vital for protection. The antioxidants and special avonoids, such as curcumin, quercetin, and resveratrol are also important. March 2007 The Blaylock Wellness Report Page 9 Page 10 The Blaylock Wellness Report March 2007 Q: I am hypoglycemic. Although avoiding all sugars, white our, MSG, etc., has helped, I was wondering if there are any supplements that might help with hypoglycemia/blood sugar levels. Kristine P., Flora, Miss. A: That is a good question, but one that does not have a good answer. In general, most hypoglycemia can be corrected with a proper diet. Avoiding all sources of caffeine is essential and will eliminate most of the symptoms associated with hypoglycemia, even when the blood sugar falls. Some supplements slow the absorption of sugar, but I worry that they might also interfere with absorption of other nutrients. Eating fats and oils, such as taking your sh oil or GLA oil supplements with your meals, will naturally slow the absorption of carbohydrates and sugars. It is also important to remember MSG comes in many disguises including broth, stock, hydrolyzed protein, soy protein isolates, soy products, vegetable proteins, natural avoring, carrageenan, yeast enzymes, autolyzed yeast, etc. These glutamate-containing products are powerful stimulators, increasing the production of insulin and making symptoms worse. Q: My daughter is expecting a baby. She has arthritis and takes Enbrel. What nutritional supplements should she be taking to help her have a healthy baby? Elizabeth S., Everett, Wash. Ask Dr. Blaylock Attention Blaylock Readers: Dr. Blaylock welcomes any questions or comments you would like to share. Each month, he will select a few to be published and answered in the newsletter. Please remember that he cannot answer every question. When submitting a question or comment, please include full name and city and state. Please e-mail the doctor at: askblaylock@newsmax.com Dr. Russell Blaylock A: I assume that your daughter has rheumatoid arthritis (RA). As you know, Enbrel suppresses TNF-a, which greatly increases the risk of severe infections, which could endanger the baby. Also, autoimmune diseases, such as RA cause the generation of numerous free radicals, which can also cause problems during pregnancy. For this reason, it is important for her to take antioxidants, primarily as a multivitamin/mineral such as the Extend Core brand. Since it does not contain iron, she will need to take iron as a separate supplement (carbonyl iron). It is also important for her to take DHA with some EPA (eicosapentaenoic). I recommend no more than 150 milligrams of EPA and 800 milligrams of DHA. The EPA reduces inammation, but excessive amounts can thin the blood. RA also causes a dramatic loss of magnesium, so she should supplement with magnesium (as magnesium malate or citrate) 250 milligrams twice a day. To get a prolonged intake I would suggest the brand made by www.jigsawhealth.com, which also contains 800 micrograms of folate. Magnesium also reduces inammation and has been shown to protect the babys brain. Once she delivers, she can switch to a higher dose of EPA 500 milligrams two to three times a day, which will boost the anti-inammatory effects. This often allows a person with RA to get off Enbrel or to at least lower the dose drastically. Q: I am taking a Prilosec every day (have been for over a year) because of a hiatal hernia. I have never had heartburn, however. Do you think its safe to take this medicine long term? Im worried about Barretts disease and esophagus cancer. Gayle W., Alamo, Calif. A: Taking any medication for a prolonged period can be a problem. In general, I would try natural remedies rst, and there are quite a few. I like DGL, which is deglycyrrhizinated licorice. It works quickly and safely to reduce both stomach irritation and esophageal irritation. The Pure Encapsulation Company makes a very effective combination product called DGL March 2007 The Blaylock Wellness Report Page 11 Plus (www.myvitanet.com), which also contains an extract from the plantain banana, slippery elm extract, marshmallow root extract and vitamin C. All of these have been shown to safely protect the stomach and esophagus from irritation. In many cases, particularly in older individuals, the problem is one of poor digestion, and the Prilosec adds to that problem by further lowering stomach acid content. In these cases adding digestive enzymes improves digestion of stomach contents and prevents reux. Q: You refer to curcumin extract often in your newsletters. Are the benets of curcumin also obtainable from turmeric itself? Michael M., Lombard, Ill. A: Curcumin is a avonoid found in the spice turmeric in a concentration of about 30 percent to 40 percent. Curcumin is concentrated as an extract and therefore is much more powerful. The puried extract has been found in a number of studies to be a powerful and versatile antioxidant. It attacks cancer cells in a number of ways and is one of the most effective ways to protect the brain against Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, and the negative effects of aging. In addition, it strongly protects against atherosclerosis. The dose does not have to be that high around 250 milligrams twice a day. Q: I am concerned about the uoride that may have accumulated in my system over the years. Are you aware of any detox methods that can get rid of uoride that may have already been stored in brain or body tissues? Great newsletter! David H., Sunnyvale, Calif. A: Fluoride removal has not been examined yet. However, we know that there are several ways to neutralize the harmful effects. First, high intakes of vitamin C (buffered ascorbate 1,000 milligrams twice to three times a day), selenium (200 micrograms a day), magnesium (500 to 1,000 milligrams a day) and iodine (300 micrograms to 1 milligram a day) have been shown to reduce signicantly the toxicity of uoride. Likewise, those decient in these nutrients have greater toxicity. Calcium is also a natural defense against uoride. This is why uoride found naturally in water supplies is less toxic than what is added to public drinking water its calcium uoride. For more information on uoride toxicity, I suggest the Web site www.uoridealert.org and the recent study released by the National Research Council (http://lab.nap.edu/nap-cgi/discover. cgi?term=uoride).
