Task 4 : Read the legend of Situ Bagendit below and then summarize it, make your
summary more organized. Present your summary to the class orally.

Situ Bagendit
Nyai Bagendit was a widow. She was the richest person in the village. She had a very big house
full of jewellery. She also had many servants working for her. Nyai Bagendit was also known for
her bad attitude. She did not like to help others. Whenever the villagers needed some money,
they borrowed the money from her. However, when they returned it, the villager had to pay
double. If they were not able to return the debt, Nyai Bagendit would ask her servants to take the
villagers belongings. Nyai Bagendit also hated beggars. She thought that beggars were lazy
people. She never felt sorry to any beggars coming to her house. So when the old beggar came to
her house, Nyai Bagendit immediately to ask her to go. "Go away you lazy old woman! Go out
of my house!" "Please, Nyai,
give me some money or just give me some food. I'm so hungry," said the beggar. "Food? You
asked for food? This is my house not a restaurant. Go now! I don't want to see you here!"
Nyai Bagendit then threw a stone to the old beggar. The old beggar was very sad.
She then said, "Nyai Bagendit, I know you are the riches person in this village. You have
anything but you never help other people. You are not grateful to God. Wait for the punishment
from God. You will be punished!" The old beggar then left Nyai Bagendit's house. "Ha ha ha!
You are right. I'm the richest person here. So no one can punish me, not even God can punish
me!" Nyai Bagendit was very arrogant. Nyai Bagendit then went back to her big house.
Not long after that, an earthquake happened. Her house fell down. Nyai Bagendit cried for help.
"Help me! Somebody please help me!" But nobody listened her crying for help. Nobody in the
village felt the earthquake. Amazingly, the earthquake only happened in Nyai Bagendit's house.
The land was opened. It was so big that the entire Nyai Bagendit's house and all her wealth were
gone. The villagers just watched what happened to Nyai Bagendit and her house. They were
amazed. They knew that God punished Nyai Bagendit for behaving badly and never helped other
people. Slowly, the place where Nyai Bagendit's house stood became lake. Since then, people
named the lake as Situ Bagendit. It means Lake Bagendit.

Della and Jim Young
Della and Jim Young, newly married, were poor. Jim's wage was enough to rent only a
very small apartment. But there were two things of which each was extremely proud: Della has
the longest and most beautiful hair in all New York; thought Jim, as he watched her; combing it;
and Jim possessed a magnificent; gold pocket watch, given him by his father.
Christmas was drawing near, and Jim and Della began think what presents they cold afford to
give each other. Della always noticed sadly, when Jim looked at his watch (which he did
whenever he had an excuse to), that it was fixed to the button-hole of his coat by a common old
leather strap. He really needed a gold chain. And Jim
often thought as he looked at Della doing her long hair, how well it would look if only he could
buy her a jeweled comb to hold it in place. But a gold watch-chain or a jeweled hair-comb would
have cost far more money than either of them possessed.
Now it was Christmas Eve. With tearful eyes Della had counted the money she had saved for
Jim's Christmas present for the tenth time 87 cents. "If only I knew," she thought. The suddenly
she had a wonderful idea! Hurriedly putting on her old hat and cost, she ran down the street to
the shop with the notice `Hair bought.' She entered and an hour later walked out of the shop
richer by 15 dollars, but without her hair! On the way home she stopped at every watchmaker's
shop until at last she found exactly the right chain to suit Jim's watch.
Returning home, with one dollar and 87 cents left in her pocked, she had just enough time before
Jim arrived home from work to wrap the precious gist in a piece of colored paper, and to curl the
remaining shorts ends of her hair. When Jim saw it, he was speechless.
"Oh, Jim, don't look at me like that!" Della said. "It'll grow again. Sure it will very quickly.
Believe me. And I had to do it. Her!" she produced the parcel with the watch chain from behind
her back. "You see, I had to sell it to get the money for your present. Merry Christmas dear."
When Jim had opened it, he dropped himself on a chair and laughed until tears came in to his
eyes. "I think we'd better put our presents a way for a while, he said, gently, at last. "You see, "he
continued, taking a small package from his pocket, "I've sold my watch to buy this comb for
your hair! Isn't that funny?"
Nodding, as the tears rose in her eyes too. Della gave Jim a brave smile and said, "Our Christmas
presents are the best presents in the world, you know."

Because of his bad habit, his parents soon became poor. They always advised Manik Angkeran to
stop his bad habit, but he never listened to them. Instead he kept on begging to his parents to give
him a lot of money. The parents

Mountain. There lived a mighty dragon with his great supernatural power. He could provide

Sidi Mantra had the bell and he also knew the prayers. "My name is Sidi Mantra. I have a

Remember the karma!" then the dragon gave him the jewelleries. Manik Angkeran was very
happy. Suddenly he had a bad idea. He wanted to kill the dragon and stole all his jewelleries.
The dragon knew his plan and with his great power he killed Manik Angkeran.Sidi Mantra was
very sad. He asked the dragon to bring his son back to life. The dragon agreed but they had to
live in different places. After few moments, Manik Angkeran lived again.

The Legend of Lake Batur
A long time ago, there lived on the island of Bali a giant like creature named Kbo Iwo.
The people of Bali used to say that Kbo Iwo was everything, a destroyer as well as a creator. He
was satisfied with the meal, but this meant for the Balinese people enough food for a thousand
men.
Difficulties arose when for the first time the barns were almost empty and the new harvest was
still a long way off. This made Kbo Iwo wild with great anger. In his hunger, he destroyed all the
houses and even all the temples. It made the Balinese turn to rage. So, they came together to plan
steps to oppose this powerful giant by using his stupidity.
They asked Kbo Iwo to build them a very deep well, and rebuild all the houses and temples he
had destroyed. After they fed Kbo Iwo, he began to dig a deep hole. One day he had eaten too
much, he fell asleep in the hole. The oldest man in the village gave a sign, and the villagers
began to throw the lime stone they had
collected before into the hole. The limestone made the water inside the hole boiling. Kbo Iwo
was buried alive. Then the water in the well rose higher and higher until at last it over flowed and
formed Lake Batur. The mound of earth dug from the well by Kbo Iwo is known as Mount Batur.

Task 1: Role play, then answer the question orally
Wendy

: Hey! It's Earth Day today. Tricia : What's Earth Day about?

Wendy

: Earth Day helps remind people to save the earth.

Tricia

: Do we need to save the earth?

Wendy

: Yes. The earth's resources are limited sp we must not waste

them. For example, so many rain forests are being cut down
for agriculture and to build modem buildings that the there
are fewer trees left. The animals which live in the forests
are also being killed.

Tricia

: Oh yes! Trees are very important. They provide oxygen and are used to make many
things.

Wendy

: Then, there are the animals which have been hunted and killed to such an extent that
they may become extinct soon if we do not protect them.

Tricia

: (looking sad) Poor animals!

Wendy

: It's not only the animals which suffer. We will suffer too because we need some
animals for food and to make many things that we use daily.

Tricia

: How can we help?

Wendy

: We can start by recycling the things we use everyday. We can reuse things like
plastic bags, paper, cans, boxes, and bottles. We can use paper bags instead of plastic
bags too,

Tricia

: How do we help the animals?

Wendy

: We could join or donate to the organizations that help to protect them.

Tricia

: All right, I will start right away.

trees grow here and they are very tall and big.
They are also overgrown with the wet moss. And on
the peak, Edelweis grows."
Donald
: "Yes, I think the trees around here are part of the
tropical rain forests. This area is poured with rain
more than six months in a year."
Ivan
: "Maybe, but we don't know much about that. By the way, can you hear the voices
of the gibbons?"
Kevin
: "Yes. Perhaps the sound is from Kinantan zoo, Bukittinggi. It's an echo."
Jacky
: "It's impossible. The zoo is so far away from here. How could it be?"
Donald
: "Mmh, I don't think so either. The sound is form around here. It is a forest, so there
should be many animals living here. One of them is the gibbon."
Ivan
:"It's possible that he sound is around us. Okay, let's find out."
Kevin
: Okay. Let's go."
Questions :
1. What is the mount like?

5. What do Donald and Ivan think about the sound?
6. Do you think there are gibbons around the place?
Task 3 : Answer the following questions orally based on the text below.
1. What are special structures owned by large plants?
2. Where do most living plants life make their home?
3. What is chlorophyll?
4. Where does the whole food-producing process take places?

We know that half of all known species of plants life

make their home in the rain-forest. Most are found in no other place else on earth. Humans have
destroyed a large portion of what was once a continuous belt of rainforests circling the earth.
When plant life disappears, so do the animals that rely on them for food and shelter.
Three-quarters of the World's plants are known as green plants. They all contain the green
pigment, chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a chemical that helps plants to trap the energy of them sun
and use it to manufacture food. Plants that do not process chlorophyll are fungi, which includes
the mushroom and toadstool. They derive their food by living on other dead and decaying plants.

All green plants need some raw materials to live. These material are water, mineral salt,
carbon dioxide and sunlight. Microscopic plants can absorb these directly from their
environment.
Large plants have special structures, such as roots and leaves, each with different job to
do. Roots perform two functions. They anchor the plant in the soil, and they absorb water and
mineral salts. Tubes in the root and stem, called xylem, carry these to the leaves. Most of the
water is lost by evaporation through very large small pores in the leaves, called stomata. This
evaporation is called transpiration and as it occurs, more water has to be drawn up from the
plant's roots.
In the leaves, the green pigment chlorophyll captures energy from the sun. The energy is
used to combine water and carbon dioxide absorbed from the air through the stomata. The
product is a sugary food which is distributed through out the plant by another set of tubes called
the problem. Oxygen is given off by the leaves as a product. This whole food-producing process
is called photosynthesis.
Fungi, while living off dead and decaying and animal matter, also create a rich humus
soil for other plants to live in, aided by microorganisms called bacteria.
Many plants reproduce by flowering. Fungi and ferns, however, reproduce by means of
spores. The spores grow into a tiny plant called a prothallus, from which the adult fern develops
Questions :
1. Mention two functions of roots!
2. What is the whole food-producing process called?
3. What is the xylem?
4. What are stomata?
5. How do many plants reproduce?
6. How do fungi and ferns reproduce?

3. Water plants usually only have ______ and
4. Part of trees above the roots is _____
5. Trees store the rest of food in _____

Read this text carefully.

What do you have in mind when you are talking about a plant? Do you imagine a green
living thing with roots, a trunk, branches, twigs, leaves, flowers, and fruits? That's perfect tree.
Some plants are green, the others are not. Plants varies from the small ones up to the
bigger ones. Some have flowers, and usually they produce fruits too, the others, like ferns, fungi,
mosses and algae don't. Some plants have only roots and leaves, like water lily, and the others
are those with roots, a trunk, branches, twigs, and leaves, without flowers and fruits. There are
some flowering plants, which don't produce perfect fruits. Usually these plants are good to
decorate our garden, yard, or even living room.
Not all plants are trees are plants.
A tree is a perennial plant with a single self supporting trunk of wood usually no branches
for some distance above the ground, and this is called a trunk or a steam. A perfect tree has roots,
a trunk, branches, twigs, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Each has its own function to the tree
Trees need water and mineral from the soil as their food. Roots take them and they are
delivered to the leaves through the xylem to be changed into sugar. This process is called
photosynthesis. Leaves, which grow on twigs, with its chlorophyll change water and mineral.
With the help of solar energy, they produce sugar and oxygen which is very important for human
life. Then it is spread to all parts of trees including the very small but through the leaves vein and
phloem. The rest is kept in the fruit as the food reserve. But usually men will take the fruit to eat.
Big trees have strong roots to hold them from strong wind or any other and trunk to
support all parts of the tree. The branches, the arm-like division of the trees, provide the place for
twigs, leaves, flowers, and fruits to grow.

Trees are actually important for human and animal lives. They can make the weather
fresh. The leaves are good food for certain animals. Some animals need trees for their home.
People also need leaves to wrap some food.
Irresponsible people cut the trees for their own need. They cut the trees into timber or log
to be exported.

Task 7: What do these words or phrases refer to? Choose the right one.
No.

of the forest. The second layer is the brush. It is about one to four meters high. The third layer is
small and medium trees. The last trees is the canopy the consists of very tall trees, about twenty
to thirty five meters high. These trees are so dense that the sunlight cannot penetrate into the
forest. This makes the lower layers damp and dark.

grass to put in the nest.
Baby birds are usually pink when they are born, are
they do not have any feathers. They must remain in the nest
until they learn to use their wings to fly. The another is very

busy during that time. Since birds feed on insects, the mother

Animals Have Weapons to Survive

Do you know how animals can survive? They have weapons. Their weapons are not the
same as those of human being. If people have brain and sometimes guns or riffles to survive,
animals have their own weapons.
Snakes and bees have poison, tigers have sharp teeth and claws, chameleons can change
itself just like the colour of the habitat, octopuses produce ink, giraffes have strong smell, rabbits
can run fast, house lizards cut their tails, etc.
Although some animals have weapons, they're still threatened to extinction. This is
because they reproduce slowly, like on-horned rhinoceroses, and irresponsible poachers hunt
them for food, money, or just for fun. Some orangutans in Kalimantan are sent to America and
Europe for money. Elephants are killed for the ivory. Whales are killed for their oil, for the ivory.
Whales are killed for their oil, for the sake of health. Some must die because their home is
changed into farmland, settlement, and nuclear plant.
They are proud enough when there are elephant's ivory carvings decorating their houses.
They said that it is an art. They're also proud when they can keep rare animals at home. They
thought they are not anybody, so that they must have something different from the others. Their
stubbornness has endangered the rare animals.
People must realize that how well they are who keep rare animals and they
will be grateful if the animals can live in their natural habitat.

a. Why are many rare species threatened with extinction?

b. Where can you find wildlife reserve in West Java?
c. What disturbs the elephants in the province of Lampung sometimes ago?
d. Where do the elephants live now?
Nowadays we can find only few rare species in the
forest because many of them have been killed or caught alive
by irresponsible hunters. Orangutans are rarely found in their
natural habitat in the forest of Kalimantan and Sumatra, but
you may find them in zoo. Hunters kill elephants for their
valuable tusks. Sometimes they catch them alive to perform in
circuses. Tiger's hides decorate walls of rich people. If things
are allowed to go on in this way, as soon as possible all
wildlife will disappear from our forests. Fortunately the
government has imposed strict laws of hunting.
Some areas are designated wildlife reserves where hunters cannot enter. They include
Ujungkulon and Pangandaran in West Java, Merubetiri in East Java, and many more in the other
islands.
Some time ago a newspaper reported that some elephants in the province of Lampung emerged
from their place in the forest and ran amuck. Before saw-mills were set up and trees were cut
down the elephants had lived peacefully. Now the animals felt that their quiet life had been
disturbed and their domain had been narrowed.
Now the government has driven the elephants back into the forest away from any villages. By
shouting and shouting on the air the people drove the elephants to a new place in the district of
Air Sugihan

UNIT 3

A. Read the following report and complete the information table. Then, choose the correct
answer to every question.
Polar Bear
The polar bears, which are usually called white bears, are
found on the sea ice of the Arctic Circle throughout the North
Polar basin. They are classified as Ursus maritimus. They live
for about 25 to 30 years. They are now endangered because of
habitat destruction.
Polar bears have white fur which may yellow in the summer.
Their bodies are longer than other bears and streamlined for
aquatic life. The females grow up to 1.8 m (6ft) long; males
grow up to 2 m (7 ft) long. Most male polar bears weigh an
average of
about 350 kg (about 880 lb), and most females weigh about 250 kg (550 lb). They have the plant
grade feet (heel and sole touching the ground, with five sharp, curved claws on each foot for
grasping the ice and holding its prey. Long hair between the pads protects the bear's feet from the
cold and provides grip on the ice. Stiff hairs on the forelegs, and very broad front feet, help the
bear swim. Polar bears have a strong navigational sense and an extremely good sense of smell,
and they are unusually clever at solving problems in order to obtain food. Since
they are carnivores; they eat primarily ringed seals, and occasionally bearded seals, walruses, or
white whales: They also feed on berries, sedges, mussels, and kelp. They live in pack ice where
water is accessible. They can be found throughout Arctic regions.
Except during the breeding season, male polar bears are solitary and roam over vast expanses of
sea ice while hunting. During the breeding season (May to June), the
males fight furiously over females. Both the male and female may mate with other individuals as
well. The female typically gives birth to two cubs after a four- to five month gestation period.
Cubs remain with the mother for about 28 months, often nursing the entire time. The young are
very small when born: about 1 kg (about 2 lb).
Their eyes remain closed for about 40 days and they must nurse every few hours. The
mother holds them close to keep them warm.

Orangutans or Pongo pygmaeus belong to the Primate order. The orangutan spends most
of its time in trees. Each evening it builds a new treetop nest. They are endangered because of
habitat lost and poachers keep on killing, owning, and exporting orangutans.
They only live on the island of Borneo and in the northern corner of the island of
Sumatra.
Orangutans are characterized by rough, long, reddish-brown fur. Male orangutans are
about 95 cm (37 in) in length and about 77 kg (1701b) in weight. Females are smaller, reaching
about 78 cm (31 in) in height and weighing only about 37 kg (81 lb). The male has puffy cheeks
and a hanging throat-pouch. This pouch contains air sacks that help produce a groaning, bubbling
call, which can be heard at least 1 km (0.6 mi) away.

Half of the orangutan's diet consists of fruit, but they also eat young leaves, soft inner
bark, termites, eggs, and occasionally monkeys.
When a female is ready to mate, she will seek out an adult male. Orangutan are
mammals; females give birth to a single infant about once every four to eight years. The
gestational period for orangutans is just under nine months, nearly the same as in human beings.
Infants stay very close to their mothers for the first three years until they don't consume their
mother's milk.

with an old saucepan, Pyrex jug, or even a sturdy can, in a pot of water. After providing the
materials, follow this procedure or instruction in making candles!
First of all, melt the wax. All wax has a flash point, so to prevent it bursting into flames; you
must melt it in a double boiler, with water in the bottom pan.
Then, prepare the mould with the wick. Thread the wick through the mould and make sure that
you leave a good few centimeters sticking out of the hole in the bottom. After that, add the scent.
If you want a scented candle, add a few drops of essential oil to the melted wax. You can use any
essential oil you like, as long as it doesn't contain water. Next step, pour the wax into the mould.
Try and tip the wax into the mould quickly, all in one go, to minimize spillage and air bubbles.
Then, release the bubbles and top it up. Releasing the air bubbles will eventually make the
candle sink, so you will need to top it up with more melted wax. Finally, remove it from the
mould. After four or five hours, the candle can be taken out of its mould.
Your candle is now ready for display. Remember, you must always leave it for a day before
lighting it.

When I was a boy, I liked swimming very much. Each year my two brothers and I spent the
holiday with our uncle and aunt in their house by the sea. It was only twenty yards from the
water. The water was warm, the sun shone brightly, and most days there were no waves. In the
middle of the day a wind always began to blow, but it was not strong and did not make the sea
rough.
One day, we put on our swimming-shorts before breakfast. Then, we ran down to the sea
across the sand and jumped in. We were in the sea or on the beach until late at night. When
our aunt rang a bell, we went back to the house for food, but we ate it in our swimming
shorts and soon went back in the sea again. We were all very good swimmers. We dived
through the waves or rode towards the beach on top of them until we were tired and hungry.
