the area where the fuel tank has been lled up in
order to avoid any risk of re.
9

OPERATION

READ THE OWNERS MANUALS SAFETY RULES BEFORE OPERATING YOUR UNIT.

Compare the illustrations with your unit to familiarize yourself with the location of the various
controls and adjustments. Save this manual for future reference.

WARNINGAlways wear eye, hearing, foot and body protection to reduce
the risk of injury when operating this unit.

Before operating the unit, stand in the operating position. Check for the following:

1. The operator is wearing eye protection and proper clothing.
2. With a slighty-bent right arm, the operators hand is holding the shaft grip.
3. The operators left arm is straight, the left hand holding the D-handle.
4. The unit is at waist level.
5. The cutting head is parallel to the ground and easily contacts the grass without the need
to bend over.

STARTING THE GRASS TRIMMER

Starting a cold engine (or a warm engine after running out of fuel)

1. Set your unit on a flat surface.
2. Move the ignition switch to the on position
marked I.
3. Move the choke lever upwards to the start
position (cold start).

NoteThis is not required if the engine is already warm.

4. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times, until the
gas/oil mixture ows in and out of the
discharge hose located above the fuel tank.
5. Pull the starter rope handle sharply until engine
sounds as if it is trying to start, but do not pull
rope more than 6 times.
6. As soon as the engine sounds as if it is trying to
start, move choke lever down to the run position
(warm start).

10

7. The engine may start, or it may
require pulling on the recoil starter until the
engine starts.
8. Allow the engine to run idle for around 10 seconds
to let it warm up.

Starting a warm engine
1. Move the choke lever to the WARM START position.
2. Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs, but no more than 6 pulls.

NoteIf engine has not started, pull starter rope 5 more times. If
engine still does not run, it is probably flooded.

Starting a flooded engine
Flooded engines can be started by placing the choke lever in the WARM START position;
then, pull the rope to clear the engine of excess fuel. This could require pulling the starter
handle many times depending on how badly the unit is flooded.

STOPPING THE GRASS TRIMMER

WARNINGThe cutting head will continue to rotate for a few seconds
after the engine has stopped.

1. Release the throttle trigger and allow the engine to idle for a few moments.
2. Move the ignition switch to the off position marked STOP.
3. If engine does not stop, move choke to the COLD START.

WARNINGThe trimmer head will turn while starting the engine. Avoid
any contact with the muffler. A hot muffler can cause serious burns.

RUNNING IN THE ENGINE.
1. During the rst ten hours of work, run the engine at a moderate RPM.
2. Do not maintain your engine at a high speed as the different components must settle with
each other during the process of running in the engine.
3. It is at the end of the running period that the engine will reach its maximum power.
4. After the rst two hours of work, stop and make sure that all nuts and screws are securely
fastened, and tighten them if necessary.

11

USE THE GRASS TRIMMER
1. Cut the grass like you are in a corridor about 5 (1.5 m) wide. Move step by step, moving
the machine from left to right and vice-versa. Make sure at each step that you are still
well balanced on your feet.
2. The line trimmer has a bump feed mechanism which releases the line without having to
stop the engine. To release additional line lightly tap the cutting line and spool assembly
on the ground while operating the unit at high speed.

NOTEAlways keep the trimming line fully extended. Line release becomes
more difcult as the cutting line becomes shorter.

3. Each time the head is bumped, it releases approximately 4/5 (2 cm) of line. The cut off
knife on the blade guard will automatically cut off any excess line. For best results, tap
the head on hard soil or bare ground.
4. Do not hit stones (even small ones), piles of earth, and small pieces of wood or anything
else that could be hidden or poorly visible in the grass.
5. If you hit a large object by accident, or if you block the cutting tool due to overloading or
having the cutter jammed with grass, you must stop the engine.

NOTEAll protective devices of the machine as well as protective equipment
must be maintained in good operating condition during the period of use.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

WarningTo avoid serious personal injury, turn your trimmer off and allow it to
cool before you clean or service it.

Use a small brush to clean off the outside of the unit. Do not use strong detergents.
Household cleaners that contain aromatic oils such as pine and lemon, and solvents such as
kerosene, can damage plastic housing or handle. Wipe off any moisture with a soft cloth.

Warning: Disconnect the spark plug before performing maintenance
except for carburetor adjustments.

CHECK FOR LOOSE FASTENERS AND PARTS

Spark Plug Boot
Air Filter
Housing Screws
Assist Hands Screws
Debris Shield

INSPECT AND CLEAN THE UNIT AND LABELS

After each use, inspect complete unit for loose or damaged parts. Clean the unit and
labels using a damp cloth with a mild detergent. Wipe off unit with a clean, dry cloth.

AIR FILTER

Accumulated dust in the air lter will reduce engine efciency. Increase the fuel consumption
and allow abrasive particles to pass into the engine. Remove the air lter as often as
necessary to maintain a clean condition.
1. Clean the air filter cover and the area around it
to keep dirt from falling into the carburetor chamber.
2. When the cover is opened, remove lter cover by
pressing in the sides and lifting it off.

NOTE: To avoid creating a fire hazard or producing harmful evaporative
emissions, do not clean filter in gasoline or other flammable solvent.

3. Wash the filter in soap and water.
4. Allow filter to dry.
5. Replace air filter and close cover.
14

NOTE: Operating the unit without the air filter and air filter cover assembly
will VOID the warranty.

FUEL FILTER
1. Fuel tank is tted with a lter.
2. Filter is situated at the free end of the fuel pipe and
can be removed through the fuel port with a piece
of hooked wire or the like.
3. Check the fuel lter periodically. Do not allow
dust to enter the fuel tank. Clogged lter will cause
difculty when starting engine or abnormalities
in engine performance.
4. When the lter is dirty, replace the lter.
5. When the inside of the fuel tank is dirty, it can be cleaned by rinsing the tank out with gas.

CHECKING THE SPARK PLUG

Note: Check the spark plug every 10-15 hours of use. Replace the spark
plug each year to ensure the engine starts easier and runs better.

1. Stop the engine and allow it to cool. Grasp the plug wire firmly and pull it from the spark
plug.
2. Clean around the spark plug. Use the spark plug to remove the spark plug from the
cylinder head by turning a 5/8 socket counterclockwise.
3. Clean and adjust the spark plug gap to 0.6 - 0.7 mm.
Replace any damaged or visibly worn plug with a TORCH L8RTC or equivalent spark
plug.
4. Install the spark plug nger tight in the cylinder head, then tighten it rmly with the spark
plug wrench.

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT
The idle speed of the engine is adjustable through the air filter cover.

NOTE: Careless adjustments can seriously damage your unit. An
authorized service centre should make carburetor adjustments.

Check fuel mixture
Old and/or improperly mixed fuel is usually the reason for improper unit performance.
Drain and refill the tank with fresh, properly-mixed fuel prior to making any adjustments.
Refer to Oil and Fuel Information.

Clean air filter
The condition of the air filter is important to the operation of the unit. A dirty air filter will
restrict air flow and change the air/fuel mixture. This is often mistaken for an out of
adjustment carburetor. Check the condition of the air filter before adjusting the idle speed
screw. Refer to Air Filter Maintenance.
15

Adjust idle speed screw
If after checking the fuel mixture and cleaning the air filter, the engine still will not idle,
adjust the idle speed screw as follows:
1. Start the engine and let it run at a high idle for a minute to warm up. Refer to
Starting/Stopping instructions.
2. Release the throttle trigger and let the engine idle. If the engine stops, insert a small
star-headed screwdriver into the hole in the air filter. Turn the idle speed screw in,
clockwise, 1/8 of a turn at a time (as needed) until the engine idles smoothly.
3. If the engine appears to be idling too fast, turn the idle speed screw counterclockwise
1/8 of a turn at a time (as needed), to reduce idle speed.

Checking the fuel mixture, cleaning the air filter, and adjusting the idle speed should
solve most engine problems. If not then all of the following are true:

1. The engine will not idle.
2. The engine hesitates or stalls on acceleration.
3. There is a loss of engine power.

STORAGE AND MAINTENANCE AFTER USE
1. When you nish working, clean the grass trimmer completely, making sure there is no
grass or dirt wrapped in the cutting tools.
2. Be careful to not hit or cut the fuel tank if you put it onto the ground. Do not let the
grass trimmer fall down to the oor or it may damage the machine.
3. Store the grass trimmer away from direct sunlight.
4. Do not store in a nylon bag, as this can encourage mould formation.
5. At the end of the season, give the grass trimmer an overall cleaning.
6. Do not leave the grass trimmer resting on the oor for extended periods as it could
cause the shape of the guard to alter, posing a safety risk. Hang it off the oor by the
top handgrip.
7. Whenever the machine is not used for a long period of time, proceed as follows:
a) Empty the fuel tank completely.
b) Protect all metal engine parts from corrosion by coating them with oil.
c) Remove the spark plug, put a few drops of oil into the cylinder and then pull the
recoil starter 2 to 3 times in order to distribute the oil evenly. Replace the spark
plug.
