Why is it that we tend to stray from God when things are going well in our lives? What is it that makes us draw closer to God when times are hard? 2. Why is it difcult for us to acknowledge how much we need Gods grace? In your own words, describe the diference between joy and happiness. Can you be joyful when your circumstances are tough? How? STUDY QUESTIONS & NOTES The opening hymn is one of the grand hymns in Christendom. One of the many hymns translated from German by Catherine Winkworth in the mid-1800s. Joachim Neander lived but 30 years (1650-1680), dying of tuberculosis. It was during this illness that he wrote our opening hymn. Knowing this fact gives much more impact to the second line of the rst verse, O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation. Even though his grandfather, great-grandfather, and great- great-grandfather had been preachers, Joachim was a sarcastic and rebellious youth. In fact, when he was twenty, he went to church with some friends to mock the worshipers. The message of the minister, however, convicted him and Joachim was converted to Christianity and later became the assistant preacher at that very church. You will nd Reformed theology in this hymn, as Neander was one of the rst Protestant hymn writers in the Calvinist strain. Let the Amen sound from his people again is a great phrase and comes at the climax in the melody line, a wonderful example of wedding text and tune. - Dr. Dan Sharp

*Passing of the Peace St. Paul always greeted with the words, The peace of God be with you. This is an appropriate way to greet fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, and so we say, The peace of the Lord be with you and respond, And also with you. We then pass this greeting of peace to one another. At the passing of the peace we should earnestly desire Gods peace upon each person we greet.
