Hands down, without a doubt,
one of the highlights of my work
is leading Chapel at Woodmont
Christian Preschool. Twice a week,
right in the middle of the sanctuary,
I get to sit down with young children
and teach them about God. We sing.
We laugh. We pray. We pass the
peace of Christ with high-fves and
hugs. But most of all, we read stories
from the Bible.
A few weeks ago, I came to Chapel with a tall stack of books.
Curious, the children and I looked at them together. Some were
heavy; others were light. Some had lots of pictures; others had lots
of words. Some were full of maps; others were full of music.
Then I pulled out one fnal book and said, This book is unlike
any other. Its the most important book of all. Their interest was
piqued. This is the Bible. The Bible is a very special book thats all
about God and Gods love. Gods love for you. Gods love for me. Gods
love for the whole world!Their eyes got big. I hope that you read the
Bible at home, I continued. Maybe you can read it in the morning.
Maybe you can read it at night. Maybe you can read it with your Mom
and Dad.
At this, a blond-headed girl raised her hand and waved it frantically.
She was clearly upset. Mr. Justin, I dont have a Bible at home.
........My heart sank. Here was a precious child that, for all of her
dolls and dresses and toys, had not one Bible at home. What a
tragedy! Its made all the worse by the fact that she isnt alone. Far
from it. Today, it seems as likely for a young child to not have a Bible
as it is to have a Bible.
........It was for this very reason that I secured a large supply of
childrens Bibles for the church this past summer. Believe it or not,
we had incredibly few age-appropriate Bibles before. Specifcally,
I purchased over one hundred copies of the Jesus Storybook Bible.
.......The Jesus Storybook Bible is by far the most popular childrens
Bible available. Written by an award-winning author of childrens
books, Sally Lloyd-Jones, and illustrated by an award-winning
illustrator, Jago, it can be found in churches and Christian homes
wherever the suns light shines. It is endorsed by pastors and
churches across denominations. It has charmed parents and children
from coast to coast. Its the only Bible that I deemed worthy to give
to my precious niece. Its the Bible that I will one day read to my
own children. Its the Bible that I currently read to yours.
.......What do I love most about it? Frankly, its hard to name all
of the good things about it. Perhaps what I love most about it is
its theological soundness. Make no mistake. Though perfectly
appropriate for children, it actually contains some fairly sophisticated
theology. Clearly, beautifully, and delightfully, it shows that Christs
life is foreshadowed all along the path to his birth. Indeed, every
story whispers his name. The Jesus Storybook Bible describes how
God moves heaven and earth to rescue his children from the danger
that threatens them. In its own words, it teaches children about
Gods Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and
Forever Love.
.......When that little blond-headed girl told me that she didnt have
a Bible at home, my heart sank. But a short second later, it bounced
back up. I knew exactly what to say. Well, then, Ill give you a Bible!
You can have it! Keep it! Read it all you want! She smiled with relief.
Whenever she opens up her own copy of the Jesus Storybook Bible,
these words from the Introduction will await:
The Bible isnt a book of rules or a book of heroes. The
Bible is most of all a Story. Its an adventure story about a
young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his
lost treasure. Its a love story about a brave Prince who leaves
his palace, his throneeverythingto rescue the one he
loves. Its like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come
true in real life! You see, the best thing about this Story is
its true! There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all of the
stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves
his children and comes to rescue them.
.......Doesnt that sound like good news? If youd like a copy of the
Jesus Storybook Bible for your family, just do what that little blond-
headed girl did: raise your hand and wave it frantically. Ill get one
to you right away!

Dear Woodmont,
This Summer I was jogging alongside
the Snake River in Wyoming. I passed an
aging cowboy, his worn boots propped
up on a split log, a smoking pipe
dangling from his chin, and a steaming
cup of joe by his side. I thought I heard
him mumble something under his
breath. But continued on my way.
Returning home, the octogenarian was in a hot and bothered rant.
I stopped in my tracks. The curmudgeon stammered, Do you have
any idea what you just missed, not once, but twice?
A bald eagle.
I looked up high into a trinity of Aspens and there she was, like a
sign from the heavens.
This was no ordinary aviator. No ofense to my starlings and blue
jays. A bald eagle is in a league all of her own. She is our national
bird for goodness sakes! Measuring three feet tall, a bald eagle is the
exact height of my three year old daughter. But most impressive is
her wingspan of 7 feet. That is almost the length of my suburban!
How did I miss it?
Sadly, I wasnt looking for it. A tragic faw!
How many times do we miss the miracle perched right there on the
path in front of us?These little ebenezers, divine signs, epiphanies,
twinkling constellations in the night sky, some almost insignifcant,
and then others so gargantuan, leaving no doubt that the Spirit has
broken through.
Are we so earthbound that we are blind to the mystery?
I believe God is still at work in the world. Actually, that God is at
work in each of our lives. Most of the time we are too stubborn to
see the signs.
Paying attention is sacramental!
We get so caught up in our lives, running here and there,
accomplishing, fretting, enduring, that we miss the eagle----A
glimmer of beauty in the ugly, clarity in the chaos, a new path at a
dead end, a creative spark on an empty page, a ficker of light under
the dark shroud, and a voice of hope in the despairing wilderness.
Never doubt the mysterious undercurrent humming, the luminous
thread weaving, the divine pulse beating beneath the surface of life.
The Spirit is at work. The hypothesis proven: We are part of a much
larger plan, of divine proportions.
For the next three days, I ran the same route, determined to see
the eagle again. No luck.
Thats life. And yet, if we keep our eyes pealed, the defnition of
faith, we are promised that God will show up in a trinity of Aspens.
For those who are sufering in the trenches of Life, keep looking up.
The eagle will make her way in your direction, that is the promise!
Live in Hope,
Farrell
P.S. A big thank you to the spiritual cowboys in our lives who are not
afraid to remind us to look up!

Retirement Reception Reminder - This
Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the gathering Hall
For over 30 years, housekeeper Beverly Honeycutt has
arrived at Woodmont at 7:00 am each Sunday morning
to open the building, make cofee, etc. for those arriving
to worship. Each Wednesday she opens the building at
5:45 am and prepares biscuits and cofee for three mens Bible classes.
We have depended on her for those early morning WCC events and she
rarely missed a morning even in inclement weather. Bev joined the
Woodmont staf in June, 1986 and this past summer, celebrated her 31st
anniversary with us. After being diagnosed with some health problems
several months ago, she has decided to take early retirement. Beverlys
last day will be October 23rd. Join us on Sunday, October 19th for a
celebratory reception in the Gathering Hall as we extend our best wishes
and ofer our thanks to Beverly for her contributions to Woodmont.

Please help us sign up for the 2014 Pumpkin Patch. By working one (or more!) three hour shift,
you help us fund the Woodmont Youth Mission Program. Its an easy and fun way to help the
youth program - and make a diference in the world. Volunteers of all ages are welcome. Its a
perfect for families - kids of all ages enjoy working the pumpkin patch! Our theme is Pumpkins
for a Purpose -- to highlight that the money we raise is used to fund our mission trips. In 2014,
the Pumpkin Patch funds sent 19 Woodmont youth and 5 adult sponsors to Guatemala, where
we met the 30+ Guatemalan children that are sponsored by Woodmont. That trip changed the
lives of all 24 Woodmonters who went along. And the enthusiasm has now encouraged Wood-
mont to sponsor more children. Now over 50 Guatemalan families are part of the Woodmont
family and receive tangible benefts though Unbound. Visit http://www.signupgenius.com/
