AFFI$ES
PREFI$ES % (STEM) % SUFFI$ES
An English word can be divided into three parts: a prefix, a stem and a suffix. Pre- means
before! a prefix, therefore, is what comes before the stem. "onsider as an example, the
prefix &'( #meaning reduce or reverse$ in a world li%e &'magneti&e #meaning to
deprive of magnetism$. A suffix is what is attached to the end of the stem. "onsider as an
example the suffix (') #meaning someone who$ in programm') #the person who
programs$. 'oth prefixes and suffixes are referred to as affixes.
(refixes usually change the meaning of the world! for example, *+( changes a word to
negative. U+magneti&able means not capable of being magneti&ed. )uffixes, on the other
hand, change the world form one part of speech to another. *or example, (,- added to the
ad+ective ,uic% gives the adverb ,uic%,-. -et us now consider some suffixes and their
usual meanings.
