Henry Schein Animal Health supports
Manchester Dogs Home in Harpurhey



Dumfries, 26 September 2014 On night of Thursday 11
th
September, a devastating fire
ravaged the Manchester Dogs Home in Harpurhey. Over 30 firefighters worked to bring the
blaze under control and along with local services and volunteers tried to save as many of the
animals as possible. Although around 60 perished in the fire, over 150 animals were rescued
and relocated to the Homes sister site, Cheshire Dogs Home in Warrington. Like many pet
lovers throughout Britain who watched events unfold on the news and social media, team
members at Henry Schein Animal Health were desperate to help the pets and volunteers in the
aftermath of the fire.

The team at Henry Schein quickly responded. Managing Director, David Hinton: We had calls
and emails from all areas of our business with offers of help, so we needed to coordinate our
response as quickly as possible. When we contacted Cheshire Dogs Home, it was clear that
members of the public were donating pet food and bedding, but nurses and volunteers urgently
needed medical supplies and prescription medicines.

Henry Schein Animal Health was able to secure an emergency supply of Metacam, kindly
donated by our supplier partner, Boehringer Ingelheim. Then the Henry Schein team set to work
assembling the donation of pharmaceuticals, pet food, bedding, needles and syringes. Health,
Safety & Security Supervisor, Steve Solonyna, volunteered to give up his free time to drive to
Cheshire. He delivered the pharmaceuticals to a nearby vet practice and arrived with the other
essential items at the Dogs homes first thing on Saturday morning. The team at the Cheshire
Dogs Home was so grateful for the items we donated, it felt good to know that we had helped to
make a difference.
