Reasonable success in catching a bounced ball while stationary.
Students Prior Knowledge
Students have previously practiced the skills of bouncing and catching and have been taught to track
and catch a ball. Students have also previously been asked to perform the task of bouncing and catching
a ball when conducting the Fundamental Movement Skills Stay in Step assessment.
Preparation
One ball per child, one hoop per child.
Lesson Plan Structure
Introduction
Gather children together and welcome them.
Revising catching and ball tracking skills. Focus on hand placement and tracking the ball.
Practice tracking and stopping a rolling ball
(5 minutes)

Body of the lesson
Tracking and catching a slowly bounced ball. Remind students of where hands should be. (3 minutes)
Bouncing at catching. Have a hoop as a target in which the students will bounce the ball, prompting to
keep hands at belly button, ready to catch. Keep hands close together, little bounces.
Extension for more other student bouncing with one hand in the hoop, progressing to a dribbling type
action. (3 minutes)
Have students working with partner, standing opposite to them, approximately 2m apart. Explain
activity to the students and set them up with one ball for the partner and a hoop directly in front of each

child. Students to bounce and catch a ball in the hoop directly in front of them, then throw the ball to
partner. Their partner is then to do the same. Emphasise the need for catching hands, and continuously
tracking ball. (4 minutes)
(10 minutes)

Closing Activity
Introduce a modified version of tag. Set up an area in which the game will be played and place 1-2 hoops
around the edge. Explain the game to the students one person to be it, and to run around trying to
tag the others. When tagged, students to go and bounce their ball in one of the hoops 5 times, before
coming back into the game. Vary who is it periodically, and allow students to offer up modifications to
the game as appropriate.
