A model for distinct and earnest community participation

"ADEW" and "HCC" celebrate launching "Madrasti" project in Kafr
El-Elw in Helwan

Association for the Development and Enhancement of Women (ADEW) and Helwan Cement Company
(HCC) organized a conference which took place in Kafr El-Elw on last Wednesday -17/09/2014, in
celebration of the launch of the "Madrasti" project, which is implemented by (ADEW) in collaboration with
(HCC) in the area of Kafr El-Elw in Helwan, during the period from July 2014 until January 2015 , in order to
improve the educational environment in the region, through the development of infrastructure and devices of
one of Kafr El-Elw schools, and also through the development of the human element of the region's
inhabitance.


The conference was held at Kafr El-Elw Primary School in Helwan, where the project is implemented, in
order to celebrate the launch of "Madrasti" project, and in order to announce the details of the project, the
target groups, and the services provided by the project during the past few months, in addition to the services
provided by the project during the coming period. So, the attendees have witnessed the huge positive change
of the infrastructure of the school and the overall maintenance of buildings and facilities.


The speakers in the conference were: Dr. Iman Bibars -Chairwoman of The Association for the
Development and Enhancement of Women (ADEW), Mr. Bruno Carr -Suez Cement Managing Director,
Eng. Maher Ghaly -Helwan Cement Plant Manager, Ms. Manal Shaheen -General Manager of follow-up
projects to develop northern Republic and the general coordinator of economic and social programs "as a
representative of the minister of civilized development and squatter areas" , and Mr. Mamdouh Mahmoud
GadAllah General Manager of Tbbeen Educational Management.

In this context, Dr. Iman Bibars -Chairwoman of ADEW- said that: "Madrasti ..is a model for hard work
among the civil, private and government sectors, in order to achieve comprehensive and sustainable
development in marginalized areas within Egyptian society, where our thought unite to develop Kafr El-Elw
area, because besides cooperation of Helwan Cement Company with us to implement the project, the Ministry
of Education, the Presidency Neighborhood of Helwan, and educational management which the school
affiliated to.. they all cooperated in the implementation of the project, as we had not face any obstacles during
the implementation of the project in the past period. She Emphases the importance of the timing of the
implementation of the project, especially at this stage that we live now in Egypt.

Dr. Bibars added: "In Madrasti project we worked on providing a suitable environment for the students of the
Kafr El-Elw primary school, whether at school or at home, and that is through the various components of the
project, through the development of the infrastructure of the school and the maintenance of its buildings and

facilities, and by providing scholarships for students parents who cant afford paying for their childrens
education, and also through the organization of community and the creation of natural leaders from of the
region inhabitants and develop the spirit of belonging to the homeland among them, or through the provision
of health services and medical care to Kafr El-Elw inhabitants".

While Mr. Bruno Carr -Suez Cement Managing Director- said that: "Helwan Cement Company
participated in the implementation of this project in cooperation with (The Association for the Development
and Enhancement of Women) out of believing in our social responsibility towards the community". He also
stressed that the importance of the company's support for Madrasti project comes from that company
officials are not injecting funds to implement projects that allow the company to achieve social responsibility
without planning, but they were keen to develop a set of standards that ensure the achievement of their goals
in making a real change on the ground through projects such as Madrasti". That is why he believes that
Madrasti will serve the Egyptian society as a whole.


Mr. Carr affirmed that (HCC) supports and cooperates with many schools in the south of Cairo and also
universities, not only materialistically, but also by supporting the idea of developing the education sector after
the revolutions of 25

January and 30
th
of June, stressing his permanent keenness on the success of such
projects, which aims to enhance next generation. He explained that the company's goal of participating in this
project is collaboration between the private sector, state agencies, and civil society organizations for the
development of the education sector.

He also urged the audience to participate in this project, so that it would be a role model that the neighboring
schools apply to itself, adding that children are the heart of the community, as everyone works for the
sublimity of this community in the future.

Eng. Maher Ghali -Helwan Cement Plant Manager- said in his speech that he is proud of this remarkable
achievement derived from the project and those who contributed in the implementation of it. He stressed that
Helwan Cement Company will continue the community development and the development of our beloved
Egypt. He pointed out that this active participation with (ADEW) is among the priorities of the (HCC) which
is one of the of Suez Cement Group companies, which is a leading group in the field of service and
participation of civil society. He added that this active participation is one of the responsibilities of the
company's support for all activities related to service community, especially "Madrasti" project, and the
process of organizing society through training and empowering of cadres residing in Kafr El-Elw to upgrade
the society and its services, and also through the provision of medical convoys to treat families residing in the
region, and to provide all medical assistance and health care for them for free.

Eng. Maher Thanked (ADEW) on the great and fruitful effort of its employees to make the Kafr El-Elw
primary school in such a decent shape, led by young people participating in the implementation of the project
because they represent a good model for young men and women of Egypt when they want to advance the
society where they live in.

He stressed that this achievement is an evidence of collaboration between the private sector and civil society
organizations, as well as activating the role of young people of both sexes in contributing to serve their
community. He completed: "This is the goal of Helwan Cement Company, in order to advance the society and
to organize and empower cadres, which will lead the society then; whom will be ,of course, from the youth".

On the other hand, General Manager of follow-up projects to develop northern Republic and the general
coordinator of economic and social programs, Mr. Manal Shaheen, clarified her opinion in the
importance of Madrasti project by asserting that as long as there is a decline in the level of education in
Egypt, we can not end the phenomenon of street children and children who smoke and drug addict.

Ms. Manal added that the issue is not only educational, but it is linked to behavioral and dealing also, so
school leaders should be supported in order to be able to bring up children properly.

She added that without community participation Egypt will not be able to succeed any project, and she wished
to see this project Madrasti implemented at the national level in all schools in Egypt.
