1.0 Scope
1.1 This Specification shall apply to the materials, design and tracing for piping, heat exchangers, tanks,
vessels and other equipment for above ground application.
1.2 The insulation manufacturers instructions and recommendations as to the method of application, etc.
shall supplement this Specification. In the event of a conflict, Purchaser shall make the final decision.
2.0 Definitions
2.1 All insulation terms and definitions shall be in accordance with ASTM C168.
3.0 Reference Documents
3.1 Insulation material shall be in accordance with the latest editions of one or more of the following
regulations, codes, standards and specifications. In all cases where more than one regulation, code,
standard and specification apply to the same conditions, the most stringent one shall apply. Conflicts
among any of the provisions of these listed codes, standards or specifications shall be referred to
Purchaser for resolution.

Electrical Heat Tracing
4.0 Materials
4.1 General
4.1.1 All insulation materials shall be suitable for the temperature and service application without
mechanical, chemical or thermal degradation or failure.
4.1.2 All supplied materials shall be new and undamaged. Materials shall be protected from weather and
other sources of damage during storage and installation.
4.1.3 Insulating and sealing materials shall not contain asbestos and shall be noncombustible.
4.1.4 Material substitutions shall be approved by Purchaser prior to supply and installation.
4.2 Insulation
4.2.1 Selection of insulation material shall be based upon economic and engineering considerations existing
at the time of the project subject to the conditions as outlined herein.
4.2.2 Generally for heat conservation or personnel protection, fiberglass, mineral wool or calcium silicate
insulation shall be used.
4.2.3 Calcium silicate shall be used in areas where its compressive strength will minimize damage.
4.2.4 Fluid impervious insulation shall be used on equipment handling materials, which are subject to
auto-ignition.
4.2.5 Expansion joint filler shall be mineral wool or fiberglass fibrous loose fill.
4.2.6 Insulation used to cover stainless steel shall have less than 600 mg/l of leachable chlorides, and greater
than 20 mg/l of sodium silicate for each mg/l of chloride. This also includes any cements or mastics in
contact with stainless steel.
4.2.7 Insulation at the base of tanks or equipment at grade, or within 600 mm of grade shall be of the
nonwicking type impervious to water, such as cellular glass.
4.2.8 Insulation materials shall conform to ASTM standards as follows:

4.2.9 All insulation materials shall have a flame spread classification not to exceed 25 when tested in
accordance with ASTM E84; the material supplier should give this information.
4.2.10 Pipe insulation material shall be press moulded calcium silicate. Mineral wool preformed pipe
insulation is acceptable up to process temperatures of 300C. Fiberglass pipe insulation shall not be
used without authorization by Purchaser.
4.2.11 Rigid block insulation for covering tanks, heat exchangers, vessels and equipment is generally
preferred. Loose pack insulation shall not be used.
4.2.12 For vessels, exchangers and fired equipment mineral wool shall be used for the service temperature up
to 300 C and calcium silicate up to 650C. Storage tank insulation material shall be fiberglass blocks
or board insulation.
4.3 Weather Barriers or Cladding
4.3.1 Allowable metals for barriers are aluminum and stainless steel. Galvanized steel shall only be used with
written approval by Purchaser.
4.3.2 Stainless steel insulation jacketing shall be used as follows:
In regions where probability of puncture or damage to the barrier exists
Over any insulation intended as fireproofing
4.3.3 Metal weather barrier shall be according to the following minimum thicknesses for thermal service:
Aluminum 0.40 mm (26 gauge)
Austenitic Stainless Steel 0.25 mm (31 gauge)
4.3.4 Aluminum cladding shall have a factory installed integral condensate barrier. The aluminum cladding
shall be 0.4 mm thick for piping and equipment of nominal diameter 914 mm or less. For piping and
equipment greater than 914 mm diameter, the aluminum cladding shall be 0.5 mm thick.
4.3.5 Except as noted herein or otherwise approved by Purchaser , cladding for piping and horizontal
equipment shall be smooth stucco, or pebble embossed aluminum. Cladding on vertical equipment
larger than 600mm diameter shall be corrugated aluminum.
4.4 Sealants, Mastics and Cements
4.4.1 Applied coatings of asphaltic (mastic) or elastomeric (butyl rubber) materials shall comply with the
following:
A flame spread classification of not more than 25 as per ASTM E84
Resistant to solar radiation
4.4.2 Mastics and coatings shall conform to ASTM C647.

4.4.3 Mastics for cold conservation service shall be vapour proof (nonbreathing). Mastics for heat
conservation service shall be moisture proof (breathing).
4.4.4 Thermal insulating cement shall conform to ASTM C195.
4.4.5 Caulking for sealing weather barriers shall be compatible with the barrier material used.
4.5 Fasteners and Supports
4.5.1 Insulation supports or anchor systems welded to piping or equipment shall be of the same material as
the component to which they are welded. The supports or anchor systems shall be welded prior to stress
relieving operations. No supports or anchor systems shall be attached by welding by the insulation
contractor without the written permission of Purchaser.
4.5.2 Insulation straps, bands, clips, wire, cups, pins, skewers and wire netting shall be dead soft annealed
stainless steel. Screws shall be stainless steel, self tapping, No. 10 x 12 mm, Robertson heads.
4.5.3 Dimensional requirements of fasteners and supports shall be as follows:
Insulation strap, 13 mm or 21 mm x 0.5 mm
Insulation clips, double pronged, 13 mm x 22 mm
Stainless steel tie wire, 1.2 mm diameter (18 gauge)
Wire netting for reinforcing, approximately 0.9 mm (20 gauge) 25 mm hexagonal mesh
Welding pins, approximately 3 mm x 25 mm x 30 mm with 16 mm hole punched at projecting end
5.0 Design
5.1 General Considerations
5.1.1 All lines and equipment shall be insulated where required for heat conservation, personnel protection,
freeze protection, and operating stability.
5.1.2 All lines which will be operating below the dewpoint of air at ambient temperatures but do not
normally require insulation as per paragraph 5.1.1 shall be insulated in accordance with Insulation
Schedule C-1 included at the end of this Specification to eliminate moisture condensing on the pipe
surface.
5.1.3 Insulation shall not be installed on the following:
Piping or equipment where heat loss to atmosphere is required for process stability
Equipment that is insulated internally
Steam traps, mechanical expansion joints, rotating joints or flex connections
Drain lines to sewers, unless subject to freezing
Vessel skirts in hot service
5.1.4 Flanges and unions on piping systems have the following insulation requirements:
Insulation shall be stopped a sufficient distance back to facilitate removal of flange bolts or
breaking the union, without damaging the insulation
Flanges in hot service shall not be insulated, unless personnel protection is specified

Flanges in sour service shall not be insulated
For cold service (process temperatures below 0C, flanges and valves shall be fully insulated with
insulation that can be easily removed for flange servicing
5.1.5 Insulation shall not cover gauge glasses, equipment name and data plates nor be applied so as to
interfere with operating parts of instruments of equipment. Insulation around nameplates shall be sealed
and weather proofed.
5.1.6 As required on all vessels for corrosion monitoring sites, 75 mm x 75 mmholes cut into the insulation
and capped shall be provided. The location will be specified by Purchaser.
5.1.7 Expansion clamps shall be used with the banding for expansion of vessels greater than 2 440 mm O.D.
5.1.8 Insulation thickness shall be as specified in Insulation Schedules H1, H2, C1 and C2 included at the
end of this Specification.
5.1.9 For required insulation thicknesses greater than 75 mm, or with hot face greater than 315C, insulation
shall be applied in double layer construction. For multiple layer application, successive layers will have
joints staggered from preceding layer.
5.1.10 Piping or equipment surface which is at 65C or more operating temperature shall be insulated to
protect personnel. If insulating such a surface is not practical or undesirable, alternatives, e.g., heat
shroud, etc. shall be considered.
5.1.11 When the insulation is required for fireproofing, the use of calcium silicate insulation, double layered
and stainless steel jacket in lieu of aluminum is mandatory.
5.1.12 Insulation thickness for glycol/water traced lines shall be in accordance with the tracing details attached
to this Specification. Fiberglass materials are acceptable for tracer lead insulation.
6.0 Insulation for Hot Piping
6.1 Pipe insulation material shall be press moulded calcium silicate (e.g., Mannville Thermo 12). Mineral
wool preformed pipe insulation is acceptable up to process temperatures of 300C. Fiberglass pipe
insulation shall not be used without authorization by Purchaser. The thickness shall be in accordance
with Insulation Schedule H-1 included at the end of this Specification for all materials.
6.2 Insulation shall be temporarily secured in place until jacket covering is installed as per table 6.1.

6.3 All insulated piping shall be covered with aluminium jacket having 0.4 mm minimum thickness. Both
circumferential and longitudinal seams of the jackets shall have a minimum overlap of 50 mm. The
longitudinal jacket seams on all horizontal piping shall be located underneath or on the side so as to
make such seams as waterproof as possible. The application of aluminium jacketing shall be done
without the use of Pop-Rivets. The jackets shall be securely fastened with 0.5 mm x 13 mm straps

and seals spaced at 250 mm maximum. Straps shall be crimped to provide for expansion. Jackets may
also be fastened with sheet metal screws or be of the self locking type seam.
6.4 Welded fittings and screwed fittings shall be insulated with segments of the pipe covering wired in
place with 1.6 mm stainless wire.
6.5 Valve bodies bonnets shall be insulated with sections or pipe covering custom formed to fit the body,
and wired on with 1.6 mmstainless steel wire. The aluminum jacket shall be custom formed to give a
neat final appearance.
6.6 Insulation on heat traced line shall be in accordance with paragraph 10.0and the appendices. In no
case, shall insulation be compressed to fit to the traced pipe.
7.0 Insulation for Hot Vessel, Exchangers and Fired Equipment
7.1 All vessels, exchangers and fired equipment shall be insulated in accordance with Insulation Schedule
H-2 included at the end of this Specification and as otherwise specified herein. Mineral wool shall be
used for the service temperature up to 300 C and calcium silicate up to 650C. The use of fiberglass is
subject to Purchasers approval.
7.2 Insulation blocks shall be installed with joints staggered and butted edges fitted tightly together. Blocks
shall be held in place with bands placed 225 mm on centre. For vessels up to 914 mm diameter, 0.5
mm x 20 mmstainless steel bands shall be used, and for vessels larger than 914 mm diameter, 1 mm x
20 mmstainless steel bands shall be used.
7.3 The aluminium jacket shall be lapped at least 50 mm on both the longitudinal and circumferential
seams and held fastened in place with 1 mm x 20 mm stainless steel bands at each lap on the
aluminium, or by using stainless sheet metal screws 250 mm on centre. The aluminium jacket shall be
0.5 mm thick flat sheet or corrugated.
7.4 Manhole covers, handholes, nozzles shall not be insulated except as required for personnel protection,
in which case a suitable removable type of metal form shall be provided. Nameplates shall not be
insulated.
7.5 The aluminium jacketing shall be neatly cut around all vessel nozzles, manways, nameplates, ladder
clips and the like. These openings shall be properly sealed off and weatherproofed with silicone
caulking or equal.
7.6 Bottom heads on vessels and piping shall be insulated under skirts. Masking shall be used for the
bottom head in lieu of metal jacket. Vessel skirts and saddle supports shall not normally be insulated
unless specified by Purchaser.
7.7 Bolted flanged covers on heads of exchangers and reboilers shall not be insulated unless otherwise
specified.
8.0 Insulation for Storage Tanks
8.1 Insulation material shall be fiberglass blocks or board insulation having 32 kg/m density.
8.2 Area adjacent to roof platform shall be insulated with high density fiberglass (96 kg/m density) for
minimum 600mm.

8.3 The bottom 1200mm course shall be insulated with non wicking type insulation, impervious to water,
such as celluar glass.
8.4 Insulation shall be secured by stainless steel banding at 300 mmcentre machine stretched.
8.5 Metal jacket shall be 0.5 mm thick corrugated aluminium. Each course of jacket shall be supported
from the lower course with S clips. Vertical joints shall overlap by a minimum of 2 corrugations and
horizontal or circumferential joints shall overlap by a minimum of 75 mm.
8.6 For cold conservation or higher temperatures (above 100C) insulation procedures shall be approved by
Purchaser.
8.7 Insulation shall be applied to the tank shell by fitting it under the angle iron support rings.
8.8 Factory insulated metal cladding may be used on larger diameter tanks when it proves a more
economical design.
8.9 Roof insulation shall be attached to the insulating pins with a galvanized steel attachment plate. The pin
shall then be bent over or cut off flush with the insulation surface.
8.10 A layer of mastic shall be applied over the insulation with a glass reinforced fabric set into it. A further
layer of mastic shall completely seal the roof.
8.11 The connection between the wall and roof shall be sealed with a one piece weatherproof insertion plate
of the same material as the shell cladding. The insertion plate shall overlap the wall section a minimum
of 75 mm and shall be inserted under the glass reinforced fabric after being coated with mastic on the
roof section. Insertion plates shall overlap one another by a minimum of 75 mm.
8.12 Insertion plates shall be secured with screws to the top insulation ring on 300 mm centres. Screw heads
shall be weather sealed.
8.13 Insulation supports shall generally be the responsibility of the tank vendor.
9.0 Insulation for Cold Service
9.1 All piping and vessels requiring cold insulation shall be covered with cellular glass, as specified in
Insulation Schedules C-1 and C-2 included at the end of this Specification, applied in staggered joint
construction with joints buttered with grade 100C roofing asphalt and fastened in place with 0.5 mm
metal bands on 250 mmcentres.
9.2 Insulation shall be covered with 0.5 mm minimum thickness aluminum jacket materials. Both
circumferential and longitudinal seams of the jackets shall have a minimum overlap of 50 mm. The
longitudinal jacket seams on all horizontal installations shall be located underneath or on the side so as
to make such seams as waterproof as possible. The application of aluminium jacketing shall be done
without the use of Pop-Rivets. The jackets shall be securely fastened with 0.5 mm x 13 mm straps and
seals spaced at 250 mm maximum or with the use of a stainless steel sheet metal screws 250 mm on
centre. Straps shall be crimped to provide for expansion.
9.3 All valves and fittings in cold service (see paragraph 5.1.4) shall be insulated with cellular glass built
up from block pipe covering sections and secured with metal bands. Joints between pieces making up
fittings cover shall be buttered with hot asphalt.

9.4 Flanges and unions (see paragraph 5.1.4) shall be insulated in the same manner as piping or vessel
insulation except that the insulation shall not be applied until hydrostatic tests have been completed.
9.5 Manhole covers, etc., for vessels in cold service shall be insulated with cellular glass and finished in the
same manner as the vessel insulation. The insulation covering manholes must be easily removable
without damaging adjacent insulated surfaces.
9.6 Pump cases in cold service shall be neatly boxed-in with 75 mmthick insulation. All joints between
pieces of block insulation shall be buttered with hot asphalt. The assemblies shall be adequately
secured with wire or metal straps and finished with an aluminium jacket.
9.7 Saddles for horizontal vessels shall be totally insulated to the base plates in the same way as the
vessels.
9.8 Skirts for vertical vessels shall be insulated up to 600 mm from the bottom tangent line inside and
outside.
9.9 Supports for lines, ladders, platforms, etc. which are attached to the cold surface shall be insulated up
to 300 mm from the cold surface in the same way as the vessels or piping. If insulating supports is not
practical or impossible, consider using thermal blocks (Micarta Block) at the support clips.
10.0 Glycol/Water Tracing Insulation
10.1 All glycol traced piping shall be traced and insulated as per the details in the diagrams appended to the
end of this Specification.
