DAY 1

Chris Hughs Assistant Coach, Houston Rockets

OFFENSE
Find philosophy, stay open minded, dont try to do everything else.

Transition bball

O starts as soon as we lose the ball on O until you score
D starts as soon as you lose the ball until you have the ball

To be a running team:
- Dont have as many set play calls
- Define shot selection: whats a good shot for a specific player, for your
system, for the context/ situation.
- You have to work on running

Is the team working?
- Are they guarding?
- Do they rebound the ball on both ends?
o D-rbs = execution
o O-rbs = hustle
- Do they run the floor?

Running teams will run after made baskets. Run ALL THE TIME.

Fast breaks are made in the back court.
Emphasize outlet and bust out.
- stress quick inbounds
- break out
- quick inbound
Eg. Tight 3-man weave + fast break out

Progressive break drill:
- 2-on-1
- 2-on-1 with late defender: last passer (to shooter) becomes defender = 3 on 1
o there are more 3-on-1s blown than 2-on-1s
o when youre a running team, you yell run a lot = when we say run, you
shouldnt have anymore in the tank to give
o playing odd man situations? TAKE [more] open shots
- 5-man lanes
o 5 run the middle
if he doesnt get the ball, get out opposite (block)
o wings run towards the corner; open up the floor, get below the block
o favour advanced pass
o try to stay on the attack no set plays

Push guard:
- create space push up the ball
- create movement (catalyst)
o push QUICK and do it WELL
o enjoy randomness
- at end of push how fast do we get into another pass-pass action / next
action
Have a good 4 man
- drive, screen, create, shoot, pass, dribble, etc

Jay Triano Assistant Coach, Houston Rockets

Early OFFENSE off of transition

Try to get ball back to you pg
Talk on offense!

4 sets look at recordings

What do you do against a team that ices and brings the ball down?

77 if big mans man jumps, you want to dive

How do you teach shot selection when youre trying to enforce transition?
- encourage OPEN shots, 3s or 2s, as long as its OPEN
- talk about who should take the shots
- score at the rim [attacks] or open 3s

Successful season = ?
- core group stays healthy
- make playoffs
- get better as a group with execution, etc

How do you know you have a championship caliber team?
- have to have talent to help you win
- no matter how good you are, you have to OVER achieve.
o Can you get more out of your players than they actually are?

Route to the NBA
- play pro in [Hughs Europe]
- assistant coach [Hughs Europe]

Possession is key. More offensive rebounds than you get run outs on the defensive
end = a good trade off (Rockets)

JUST. FIND. SOMEBODY. on transition D. q

DAY 2

Players learn from you start them off young.

Good D = 1 good, 2 play hard

Good defensive teams:
- Accountability
o Look at tape
o Whered the break down come from?
- Togetherness on the D end
o Do they trust each other?

Raptors:
1. Convert every assignment youre given
2. Contain the ball stay square, stay in stance
3. Contact we hit first
4. Continue the coverage coverage throughout the whole clock, the whole
possession
5. Close out dont run out, contest the shot
6. Contest multiple and rear view contest
7. Charges
8. Communication intimidates the offense, call out coverage 3 times (mine
not ball), 2-9 help side, you catch a mistake before it happens, gives you a
head start on the play, energizes

Stay away from:
1. Criticism
2. Complaining
3. Confusion through drill work, using communication
4. Concede do not concede defensively

Roll the Ball drill 5 on 5 transition = 5 on 4 + trail on D
- can modify to two ppl (5 on 3)

7 Keys in Transition
1. Transition starts the moment the ball gets shot (shot selection)
o Send 1 and 2 back
2. First 3 steps are most important steps you take
o Get back on D ASAP
3. Declare the ball
o You never have
4. 5 sprints into the paint
5. protect the basket
o stop ball before 3 pt line
o bigs kick smalls out
o load the ball (keep the ball on one side)
all 5 bodies
o 3 legal bumps
slow moment down before they get into the paint to avoid
early shots
6. last man down
o communicator
o last man goes opposite
7. Talk, point, talk some more
o pointing is talking
o clarify hand signals amongst team
