iLand
for small ensemble and tapeFor MotherProgram Notes
iLand is not programmatic per se, itis rather descriptive,
‘The name derives from a word game. It sounds like island,
which is the main theme of the work, the island of Corfu,
where I lived for 6 years studying music composition.
But it is not a soundscape, neither a soundwalk of Corfu.
Itis rather a painting, a metaphor of my personal impression of it.
‘Thus the / in ‘Land represents me, but it also stands for
the interaction between the two sound-worlds I attempt to create.
‘The one presented by the ensemble and the other
brought forth by the pre-recorded tape.
‘My intention is to create an inseparable image
(sound-world) from the combination of the two mediums.
For the tape part I have used and manipulated
mainly sounds recorded in Corfu,
‘My choice of instruments is also closely related to the
‘exercises of the composition courses I took at the Ionian University.
Performance Notes
1."The work isto be performed strictly in 160 time, but expressively, allowing rubato.
2. click-track can be prepared for the conductor, for facilitating synchronisation with the tape part.
3, Players read from score
4. Where no indication of dynamic expression between or atthe end of hairpins exists,
itindicates a small fluctuation within the range of previous noted dynamic expession.
5. Microphones may be used for the amplification ofthe instruments in relation to the tape
‘and according to the acoustics of the room where the piece is to be performed.
6.TThe Tape notation is indicating important moments inthe tape part,
to facilitate synchronisation with performers and/or conductor
and is in no way accurately and precisely descriptive or representative of the tape part itself.
7.TThe arco parts of the vibraphone may be performed with the use of soft mallets and pedal instead.
