Before You Begin
This section provides you with safety information, technical support information,
and sources for additional product information.
Safety Summary
Your safety is extremely important. Read and follow all warnings and cautions in
this document before handling and operating Intermec equipment. You can be
seriously injured, and equipment and data can be damaged if you do not follow the
safety warnings and cautions.
Do Not Repair or Adjust Alone
Do not repair or adjust energized equipment alone under any circumstances.
Someone capable of providing first aid must always be present for your safety.
First Aid
Always obtain first aid or medical attention immediately after an injury. Never
neglect an injury, no matter how slight it seems.
Resuscitation
Begin resuscitation immediately if someone is injured and stops breathing. Any
delay could result in death. To work on or near high voltage, you should be familiar
with approved industrial first aid methods.
Energized Equipment
Never work on energized equipment unless authorized by a responsible authority.
Energized electrical equipment is dangerous. Electrical shock from energized
equipment can cause death. If you must perform authorized emergency work on
energized equipment, be sure that you comply strictly with approved safety
regulations.
Sicherheitsbersicht
Ihre Sicherheit ist uerst wichtig. Lesen und befolgen Sie alle Warn- und
Vorsichtshinweise in diesem Dokument, bevor Sie Intermec-Gerte verwenden und
betreiben.

verantwortlichen Stelle dazu berechtigt. Stromfhrende Gerte sind gefhrlich.
Stromschlge durch stromfhrende Gerte knnen zu tdlichen Verletzungen
fhren. Falls zugelassene Notreparaturen an stromfhrenden Gerten
vorgenommen werden mssen, ist darauf zu achten, dass die genehmigten
Sicherheitsvorschriften strikt eingehalten werden.
Safety Information
Your safety is extremely important. Read and follow all warnings and cautions in

seriously injured, and equipment and data can be damaged if you do not follow the
safety warnings and cautions.
This section explains how to identify and understand dangers, warnings, cautions,
and notes that are in this document. You may also see icons that tell you when to
follow ESD procedures and when to take special precautions for handling optical
parts.

A warning alerts you of an operating procedure, practice, condition, or
statement that must be strictly observed to avoid death or serious injury to the
persons working on the equipment.
Warnung: Ein Warnhinweis macht Sie auf ein Betriebsverfahren, eine Praktik,

Troubleshooting the 6820
The following table describes different printing problems that can occur and
possible solutions. Use this section to find possible solutions to problems you may
have.
Printing Problems
Problem Possible Solution
The printer does not
communicate with the mobile
computer.
Make sure the correct protocol setting is selected.
Check the self-test report for the correct bit rate and
protocol setting. To perform a test print, press the
Form Feed and Set Page buttons on the control
panel for 3-5 seconds.
Change EEPROM settings through the configuration
process.
There is double-spacing on
application reports but single-
spacing on self-test.
Make sure the Auto Feed is configured correctly. Check
line 16 on the self-test report. CR+LF indicates an
incorrect configuration for NPCP.
The number zero prints
incorrectly (with or without
slash).
Make sure the EEPROM setting is configured correctly.
Check line 15 on the selftest report for the Zero Font
Style setting.
The printer does not print the
extended character set.
Check line 11 or 12 on the selftest report to see if the
NFT0000.MOD file is listed after Font Module.
The printer emits 1 or 2 beeps or
blinking green light is the only
indicator.
Make sure the printer mechanism has adequate power
for printing. The 12 V may be under or over voltage fault.
Note: Error lights do not flash if voltage is too high.
The printer emits 2 sets of 3
beeps.
The printer is out of paper. Reload paper into the printer
mechanism.
The printer works, but some or all
LEDs do not work.
The gray ribbon cable connecting control panel board to
pivot frame assembly is loose. Call Customer Support, or
send the printer in for repair.
The printer does not print. Check the self-test report for correct settings. To
perform a test print, press the Form Feed and Set Page
buttons on the control panel for 3-5 seconds.
The voltage is too high or low. Check line 13 on the
carriage return selftest report, under the Battery
Voltage heading.
The paper is wrinkled, creased,
moist, or missing perforations.
The white ribbon cables are obstructing the paper. Head
jams due to carriage alignment. Check line 29 on self-test
report, under Position heading, for value.
The printer does not feed the
paper.
Remove the ribbon cartridge, and move the
printhead. If it is still smooth, the ribbon is jammed.
Remove the ribbon cartridge, and move the
printhead. If still it is still resistant, the mask spring is
bent or damaged.

Replacing Parts in the 6820 Printer
This chapter describes how to open and replace parts in the 6820 Full Page Printer.
Replacing the Cover
Use the following steps to replace the cover of the cover mechanism assembly. To
replace the cover, you need these parts and tools:
To replace the cover for the 6820 Printer (Fixed and Portable)
1 Lift to open the cover.
Note: Opening this product can result in voiding the warranty. The internal
workings of this product can only be accessed by authorized Intermec service
personnel.
Integrated circuits on the printed circuit board (PCB) are very sensitive to
damage by electrostatic discharge (ESD). The 6820 printer should only be
repaired at a workstation with ESD protection. Authorized Intermec service
personnel should always wear skin-contact grounding straps and use a
properly grounded static mat. Failure to comply may result in damage to PCB
components.
This icon appears at the beginning of any procedure in this manual that could
cause you to touch components (such as printed circuit boards) that are
susceptible to damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD). When you see this
icon, you must follow standard ESD guidelines to avoid damaging the
equipment you are servicing.
